Michael is off this week so ex-Gamerdork host Uzi sits in to reminisce of the good old days.Running time: 02:40:14
This second episode Alex Shaw of Digital Gonzo asks “How will the closure of Blockbuster, HMV and GAME affect UK game sales?” Gary Blower of GameBurst asks “Are mincrotransactional, freemium games a return to the mistakes of the arcade?” And Matt Ramsey of GamerDork asks “Do we put too much pressure on ourselves as gamers to do and play everything?” As always we intersperse these with appropriately catchy music and short snippets of the previous month’s output from all three feeds. Talk about the show on Twitter with the many hosts using the hashtag #PraxisEffect. Contact us via email at praxiseffect@gmail.com and come to the Gonzo Planet forums where there is a Praxis Effect section. We want to hear you guys use these discussions as jumping off points for debate.

This is the first of an ongoing monthly series of team-up podcasts, covering the wide world of geek culture and combining co-hosts from three websites; GameBurst, GamerDork and Gonzo Planet. Three hosts per show, one topic per host, ten minutes per topic. For this inaugural outing we have... James Batchelor asking “Is this the last generation of consoles?” Alex Shaw asking “If so, is there something to be said for only buying one of them?” And Leah Haydu with “Should consumers of media have a say in the narrative direction of that media?” These round-table discussions are interspersed with short snippets of the previous month’s output from all three feeds. Talk about the show on Twitter with the many hosts using the hashtag #PraxisEffect. Contact us via email at praxiseffect@gmail.com and come to the Gonzo Planet forums where there is a new Praxis Effect section. We want to hear from you about what you’d like to hear about on the show in the coming months. We’ll be back on the first day of every month.
[Digital Gonzo 2013] This is the first part of our epic trilogy of review podcasts focusing on the Mass Effect game series from Bioware. Originally released in 2007 on Xbox 360 and following on the heels of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire, this was the Canadian developer's original take on a serious Sci-Fi space opera. The first game is not without its flaws and the frustrating combat, slow beginning, vehicle sections, simplistic hacking, texture pop, and crazy glitches are all hauled over the coals, however, this is balanced with effusive praise for the characterization, in-depth discussions about the textured and detailed worlds they have built, first rate voice acting, storyline and narrative sweep. If you've played it and enjoyed it overall you will be well at home. If you haven't played it we keep the major spoilers for a section at the end so you can listen in and find out what all the fuss is about. My crew are Matt Ramsey of GamerDork, Neil Taylor of GameBurst, James Perkins of GameBurst and Geek Wad, Justin Smith of Last Save Loaded and Jerome McIntosh of the Gonzo planet community. We'll be back in a month to talk about Mass Effect 2 and then four weeks after that for Mass Effect 3.
[Digital Gonzo 2013] This week we're back busting ghosts and investigating paranormal disturbances of all kinds. The majority of the show is spent discussing Ghostbusters II, the 1989 sequel that despite studio pressure, editing strife, shifting release dates, unhappy cast and crew, lukewarm reception and relative obscurity still manages to not be a terrible follow-up to one of the greatest comedies of all time. Also up for debate are The Real Ghostbusters, Extreme Ghostbusters, the 2009 video game and the prospects in store for a possible Ghostbusters III. Guests: Neil Taylor of TheKidDogg Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2013] Welcome to the movie that started it all… for me anyway. Ghostbusters was the first trip to the cinema for me, aged four. In effect, considering our twelve inch, wooden, push-button telly, it was the first experience that made me understand what a film could be. And what a way to start a lifetime of being besotted with this medium. It has everything a young lad could want; eye-popping effects, hilarious dialogue from a really tight script, mythology and science hinting at a wider world and believable, lovable heroes facing off against a dark god in the center of New York. We clean up the town, taking you guys from creepy Columbia logo through to Slimer's final charge, along the way we talk about balancing comedy with horror, abandoned concepts and casting choices, the secrets of the special effects, the theoretical science of busting ghosts and for one loopy tangent… The Shining. Next week we're talking Ghostbusters II, The Real Ghostbusters, Extreme Ghostbusters, the 2009 Ghostbusters video game and the prospect of Ghostbusters III. This ended up being in the top three most quotable movies reviewed by Gonzo, up there with Aliens and Predator. We came, we saw, we kicked it- Guests: Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse Neil Taylor of TheKidDogg Gary Blower of GameBurst Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2013] On this episode we continue the Ninja Turtles discussion through the 2003 show, the 2007 CG movie and the 2012 Nickelodeon CG show. Two things become clear over the course of events. One is that despite being less popular now than at the height of early 90's Turtle Power the output itself is getting better and better, the other is that on a long enough timeline without a full reboot every so often, the TMNT framework descends into inane nonsense. Guests: Neil Taylor of TheKidDogg Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2013] This is the first of two podcasts for 2013 covering the first 29 years of Turtle history, from their monochrome single issue comic book published by Mirage Studios back in 1984 all the way up to the new Nickelodeon TV show in 2012. It's hard to remember now for some of us who were there at the time but turtlemania was a thing and we shall remind you of it. For the younger listeners this will be a window into what things were like back then, with all the comics, toys and cheesy merchandise discussed. This episode covers their creation and early years, the 80's TV show, renamed Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles in the UK, the first movie from 1990 which has held up surprisingly well and bears much of the focus of this podcast, followed by its two atrocious sequels and the temporary bullet in the head of the franchise, the late 90's live action Saban show “The Next Mutation”. Next week we will be looking at the more serious second animated series originally released in 2003 as well as the fourth (and best) movie and the new, third animated show, which is actually rather excellent. With the fifth theatrical movie in production for release in 2014, not coincidentally their 30th anniversary as well as not one but two major TMNT video games being released in the Autumn of this year there has never been a better time to get re-acquainted with Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. Guests: Neil Taylor of TheKidDogg Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2013] I'm trying out a new format this week. Rather than the usual round-table discussion this is a series of audio articles on Superman and in particular the 2006 film Superman Returns. This is the perfect film to do this for because it's hated by so many, liked by several, it opens up the archetypal hero for analysis in a way none of the earlier films did and it had an incredibly protracted development cycle of nigh-on twenty years. 1. Intro 2. Superman Returns: Good, Bad or Both? 3. Kryptonite 101 4. Kevin Smith on Superman Lives 5. The Non-Making of Superman 6. This is why Superman Doesn't Work Alone 7. A Couple of Things You May Not Have Noticed 8. A Comic Fan on Superman 9. Superboy 10. The Joy of Lex 11. Lois' Pain 12. Superman's Return I hope you guys will find it entertaining, deep and funny. One of the benefits of this format is that it allows community members to get their views aired so that it facilitates a mix of viewpoints. I think this could potentially work a lot better than the cyclical bickering contest that contentious film reviews on podcasts sometimes become. Let us know on the forums what you think of it. Next week's Watchmen will be in the same style. This won't replace the standard Gonzo format, but it's not every film lends itself to the same uniform manner of review and this is simply another approach. Chapter 2. Written by Lucas Windsor. [Digital Gonzo 2011] This is an extensive Gonzo review of two versions of the same classic tale by Charles Dickens: 1. The Muppets Christmas Carol [Disney, 1993] 2. A Christmas Carol [Disney, 2009] We take you back to the winter-swept streets of London in 1843 as we take a close look at the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge and his transformation from mean-spirited miser to warm-hearted philanthropist literally overnight. And all it took was a life-changing series of ghostly visitations upon one very long Christmas Eve. Fantastic music from composers Miles Goodman, Paul Williams and Alan Silvestri punctuate this review, along with some choice snippets of dialogue and of course those singing Muppets. Guests: Neil Taylor of GameBurst Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2012] Director of two of the Resident Evil movies and producer of the rest, Paul WS Anderson helmed the first PG-13 foray for these licenses, combining them into one family-friendly Jurassic Park-style romp. If you've not seen it the plot could be adequately described on the back of a matchbox or indeed with crude, crayon diagrams. Humans go somewhere they shouldn't, looking for stuff. They find ALIENS and then PREDATORs show up. The humans go squish and the creatures fight. It's a right palava. Josh Garrity of Cane and Rinse, Leah Haydu of GamerDork, Sharon Shaw of Gonzo Planet, James Perkins of Geek Wad and Matt Ramsey of DorkTunes are now joined by Neil Taylor of GameBurst as I bring this intrepid group of explorers closer to the ignoble end of one franchise that only ever needed to be two movies and another that maybe didn't even need that many. Find out what happened thousands of years ago, hear the deep-sea sequel idea conceived and marvel at the inappropriate attempted vocal characterization of the PREDATORS. Guests: Sharon Shaw of School of Movies Leah Haydu of Some Other Castle Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse Matt Ramsey of GamerDork James Perkins of The Digital Fix Neil Taylor of TheKiddDogg
[Digital Gonzo 2011] For the third and concluding part of our Predator specials we cover the long-awaited third movie, released two decades after the second in 2010; Predators. Find out what we feel about the expanding worlds of this alien hunter and ultimately how they could take the series in new and exciting directions in the future. Guests: Neil Taylor of GameBurst Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2011] For the second part of our Predator specials we cover the 1990 film; Predator 2, this time starring too-old-for-this-shit Danny Glover. This one is directed by Stephen Hopkins who went on to helm The Ghost and the Darkness and Lost in Space. Once again the whole show is underscored by the music of Alan Silvestri. Unlike last week, opinion is somewhat more divided on the subject of this one and its follow-up. Neil and I have opposing favourites and a somewhat scornful reaction to the other for different reasons. Guests: Neil Taylor of GameBurst Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2011] This first episode is all about the 1987 original (and some would say best). What seems at first an exercise in machismo actually becomes a fascinating study in hunter and warrior culture as well as a bloody tale of hardened men taken to the heart of darkness. Starring the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger himself alongside Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura and Bill Duke, stalked by the forgotten but exceptionally talented physical performer Kevin-Peter Hall as the alien hunter himself. On a side note, to play the Predator drinking game, every time one of us quotes the movie take a shot. You will be unconscious within half an hour. Guests: Neil Taylor of GameBurst Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2011] We're back for the last Die Hard movie (for now). This time almost everyone from the original three is absent save for Bruce Willis himself and we struggle to locate our interest in what is otherwise a functional, but unrelated action flick. We're aided by some sterling musical accompaniment and at the end we bring in the big guns with Doctor Mark Kermode's views on this particular waste of a sequel. There are also rants about the focus-grouped nature of this production, the PG-13 certificate, the subsequent lack of bite onscreen and why Willis needs to see a wigmaker and a vest-supplier. Guests: Neil Taylor of GameBurst Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
It's here again as the teams from two of the world's favourite gaming podcasts join forces to review 2010.Joypod's Elmo and Michael are joined for this third annual Xmas Special by Leon 'Ratso' Cox and Neil 'Xibxang' Brooks of magnificent GamerDork fame. Basically, it's 2010 wrapped up for you in gaming. So, give it a hell of a listen... And remember you can contact the boys at joypod@spong.comRunning time: 03:39:25
[Digital Gonzo 2010] The third Die Hard movie gets the Gonzo treatment. This time John McTiernan returns to bring the series back to greatness. We discuss how in many ways this is the equal of the original. Guests: Neil Taylor of GameBurst Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
Amongst the usual chit chat about what games they have been playing they also discuss the wonderful world of podcasting, along with the equally exciting world of Xbox Indie Games.Black Ops, do you remember the single-player? What's best to play when your out of your mind on cold medicine? Is Lara any good? What XBLA game has frogs in suits wearing hearing aids? There's also a little review on this week's Walking Dead and more.Running time: 01:36:42
[Quiz] Battling against skype lag, Neil hosts the September edition of the GameBurst Quiz. This month see's a Blockbuster style competition, with Dits and Xantiriad from the The Gamer Scene take on Ratso from GamerDork. This week also has a new round, The Dialog Round!

Find out what happened thousands of years ago, hear the deep-sea sequel idea conceived and marvel at the inappropriate attempted vocal characterization of the PREDATORS. 53m: This was the last ALIEN film produced leaving the once acclaimed series in the gutter of creature features filled with and made by talentless nobodies. The lack of gore in the Paul WS Anderson original caused the pendulum to swing back violently, the result being that this film is ONLY about the blood and guts. Its dingy, nasty, grotty, witless, artless garbage, unfit for the term “film” and the seven assembled reviewers get their critical teeth in with savage acuity. The PREDATOR series fared better after this as the 2010 film PREDATORS was deliberately set apart from these crossovers and pitched itself as a follow-up to the 1987 original. As the spiritual equivalent of Cameron's ALIENS it gave hope for continuation of that series. With Scott's plans for the PROMETHEUS story skewing further away from the Alien franchise it could be a while before we see them emerge, dripping from the shadows once again. [Digital Gonzo 2011] The 1990 sequel to Die Hard. You know the drill; airport in trouble, terrorists, gunfights. Experience firsthand what happens when the Gonzo format encounters a movie that's actually just pretty mediocre. Tangents galore! Other movies, what made them good, anything to save us from traipsing through the minutia of this by-the-numbers late 80's action movie. There's also some hilarious dubbing work from the TV edits. Guests: Neil Taylor of GameBurst Matt Ramsey of GamerDork
[Digital Gonzo 2010] In this first show, we discuss the Nakatomi incident, John and Holly's relationship and Hans' status as one of the greatest movie villains of all time. We also look at how immensely influential Die Hard has been both for action-thrillers and the portrayal of cinematic heroes. Guests: Neil Taylor of GameBurst.
