Justin and Paul are back! That's right the trivia challenge winner is finally back from his world tour, and he's stopped in to talk to the little people. On this week's pod part 2 of Small Roles, Big Impact! Join the guys as they talk about ten actors who walked on the set for a day or two and slayed their scene. We're back and we got a good one! It's a fine line between cop and criminal…what happens when one finds himself on either side of the road? On this one, we have Bill Duke's raw 1992 thriller “Deep Cover” vs. Mike Newell's influential 1997 thriller “Donnie Brasco”. Which one wins? Let's find out! Aftershow: Brad […]
Friend of the Show Jen (@JenWalksN2Walls on TikTok) joins us to cover Sister Act 2. We once again follow the misadventures of Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg), a Las Vegas headliner who selfishly abandons the backup dancers, crew members, and support staff who rely on her show to make their living, all so she can go be a substitute teacher at a Catholic school for some reason. Seriously, is she paying all these people out of her pocket while her show is on hiatus? Or is she like Jimmy Fallon during the 2023 strikes, sending them each a $20 gift card and best wishes? Anyway. This movie's a lot of fun, but it is all over the place. Looking into the production history, we see it's a hastily produced sequel that seems almost as if it started as an original, unrelated script about a high school choir competition and then had the Sister Act nuns awkwardly grafted onto it. Still, Whoopi Goldberg is her usual delightful self, but she's outshined by these delightful kids, including a just-about-to-be-a-superstar Lauryn Hill as Rita, a high schooler whose mom hates choirs more than anything else. Wilson (Terrance Stamp) is a career criminal from the UK who is now coming to Los Angeles to find out about what happened to his daughter (Melissa George) who just tragically died in a car accident....or did she? Her father suspects that she might have been murdered and he suspects that it might have been her wealthy, older record executive boyfriend Terry played by the late, great Peter Fonda. Along the way, Wilson recruits help from two local actors (Lesley Ann Warren, Luis Guzman) who were friends with his daughter and what results is a stylish, somewhat time-bending revenge thriller which received significant acclaim when it was first released twenty five years ago. Send us a textKatie and Bridget get lost in the jungle as they re-watch the 80's movie: Predator! Come along as we follow a bunch of muscled, sweaty men (not Magic Mikes, unfortunately) who are traveling through the jungle in search of saving some hostages. What they don't know is that they are being hunted by an invisible being. Spoiler alert: it's the mofo Predator! When the men start getting killed off one by one they resort to blowing everything up, destroying the local ecosystem - via blowing everything up, and continuing to shoot guns even when their arms are blown off. But all that fails because what they really needed was mud! ...Just some mud! We've got Arnolds! We've got gratuitous violence! We've got Microsoft Paint CGI! We've even got a Predator that laughs at the end because why the fuck not! Released in 1987, it stars a cast of characters played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Elpidia Carrillo, Bill Duke, Jesse Ventura, Sonny Landham, Richard Chaves, and Shane Black.

Writer and podcaster Jake Tropila returns for a dive into the dusty, hard-nosed pleasures of John Dahl's 1993 neo-noir western 'Red Rock West'. The film has been newly restored and released on blu-ray in a great edition courtesy of Cinématographe, a new sub-label from the folks behind Vinegar Syndrome. We start with a discussion of the career of John Dahl, an underrated director with a sharp style that made him a prime helmer of small, smart thrillers of the era alongside his skilled conteporaries like Bill Duke and Carl Franklin. Then we turn to Red Rock West, its influences, and where it exists downstream from the success of the Coen Brothers' 'Blood Simple', a film that bolstered a neo-noir resurgence in the late 80s and early 90s. Finally, we discuss the relative absence of the neo-noir in the modern cinematic landscape, the migration of these sorts of stories into longform, episodic television, and some hopes for the genre's future, courtesy of some recent releases like the latest Rose Glass film 'Love Lies Bleeding', a film that had yet to be released when this episode was recorded. It's been two weeks since we talked horror at Spoilerpiece, so Megan and Dave remedied that by watching Teresa Sutherland's LOVELY, DARK AND DEEP, a bump-in-the-night-type thriller that plays out in a national park. While Megan and Dave came to roughly similar conclusions about the movie's technical aspects and Georgina Cambell's lead performance, one of them hated it overall (like, HATED IT) and one of them liked it. First listener to guess who hated it wins a trip down amnesia lane. Then the whole gang watched PLAYERS, a new Netflix romcom starring Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr., and a million supporting actors. Listeners, this movie is the definition of meh. It's too bad, because there's some serious talent involved. But few things can save crummy writing, except maybe doing a bunch of shrooms so you can space out while watching this below-average collection of silly gags and contrived plot threads. (Spoilerpiece doesn't advocate you doing shrooms. But we can't stop you, either.) And over on Patreon, we talk about Bill Duke's DEEP COVER with Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum, which won our Black History Month poll.

"Predator" (1987), picked by Sargy and directed by John McTiernan, was a significant undertaking that brought together a formidable cast and crew to create a landmark sci-fi action film. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch, the leader of an elite military rescue team, the film blended elements of traditional action with science fiction, introducing a new level of suspense and terror with the titular extraterrestrial antagonist. The Predator, portrayed by Kevin Peter Hall, was a groundbreaking creation in special effects, featuring advanced camouflage technology and thermal vision, making it a formidable and iconic cinematic villain. The film's production team, including special effects wizard Stan Winston, worked meticulously to bring the Predator to life, creating one of the most memorable creatures in cinematic history. "Predator" faced challenges during filming, including the harsh conditions of the Mexican jungle where a significant portion of the movie was shot. The intense physical demands on the actors, especially during the arduous action sequences, added to the authenticity of the film. The camaraderie among the diverse cast, including Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and Bill Duke, contributed to the film's dynamic energy. "Predator" was a critical and commercial success, solidifying Schwarzenegger's status as an action star and leaving an enduring impact on the sci-fi and action genres. The film's combination of intense action, innovative special effects, and the menacing presence of the Predator has made it a classic in the annals of action cinema.
