Defense witnesses took the stand Monday in the trial of Ashley Benefield, a 32-year-old former professional ballerina accused of murdering her husband, Doug, in 2020. Benefield's defense, led by attorney Neil Taylor, aims to portray her as a frightened wife who acted in self-defense against an abusive husband. Benefield herself testified last Friday, admitting to killing Doug but claiming it was in self-defense after he allegedly became physically abusive. On Monday, Taylor called several witnesses to support this defense. The first to testify was Bruce Ferris, a mental health professional specializing in domestic and family issues. Taylor asked Ferris to determine whether Ashley's alleged behaviors fit the definition of a domestic abuse victim. Ferris affirmed that they did, citing actions such as “acting deferential and subservient during joint therapy sessions, but decisively different in individual sessions... being exposed to threats, intimidation, holding down, humiliating, cursing.” “These are again techniques of compliance, not wanting to poke the bear,” Ferris explained. “They don't want anyone to know, and they don't want their abuser to be angry by disclosing.” Next on the stand was Vincent Vizzaccaro, a Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch-based realtor. Doug had previously contacted Vizzaccaro about purchasing a home in Lakewood Ranch, near where Ashley lived. Judge Matt Whyte initially ruled Vizzaccaro's evidence, emails between him and Doug, as hearsay and temporarily dismissed him. However, after deliberation, Whyte overturned this decision, allowing Vizzaccaro to testify. Vizzaccaro revealed that Doug wanted to buy a house directly behind Ashley's while they were separated, suggesting a potential motive for control. Dr. Jason Quintal, a counselor who worked with both Doug and Ashley, followed Vizzaccaro. Quintal shared his professional conclusions about Doug, stating that Ashley expressed fear towards him and that Doug maintained an “alpha-male” persona. “Doug occurred as somebody who was domineering... super-controlling,” Quintal testified. The testimony later shifted focus to the shooting incident itself. Michael Haag, a forensic shooting reconstruction expert, discussed the bullet trajectories. According to Haag, two bullets struck Doug from different angles, and other objects in the room were also hit by bullets, indicating that Ashley moved during the shooting. “There's not a physical possibility for the firearm to have been stationary between just those two shots,” Haag said. Closing arguments from both sides are scheduled for Tuesday. Ashley Benefield faces charges of second-degree murder and could be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison if convicted. In a series of testimonies on Wednesday, key witnesses provided detailed accounts surrounding the events leading to the fatal shooting of Doug Benefield. The court heard from law enforcement officials, Doug's family attorney, and those close to Ashley Benefield, painting a complex picture of the couple's turbulent relationship. In 2017, Ashley Benefield moved to Bradenton, Florida, to live with her mother, Alicia Byers. At the time, she was pregnant with Doug's child. In March 2018, Doug retained family attorney Stephanie Murphy to facilitate communication regarding his involvement in their child's birth. Murphy testified, “Initially, the purpose of hiring me was to draft a letter to Ashley, who was pregnant with their child at the time. The purpose of the letter was to open the door for discussion about Doug's participation in the upcoming birth of their child, but also to advise that if she did not feel comfortable with him being present at the birth, he was respecting her need for space.” Despite Murphy's efforts, Ashley did not respond, and she was induced the day after the letter was sent. Doug was unaware his daughter was born until five to six weeks later. Following this, Ashley began filing complaints against Doug, alleging domestic violence and poisoning, but an injunction was not granted. Doug eventually met his daughter when she was six months old under a court-granted parenting plan. Murphy recounted the surprising turn of events during this visitation, “Ashley decided to go with Doug for the visitation, which came as a surprise. I cautioned Doug, advising against it, but he chose to proceed.” This initial meeting was followed by about 11 months of relative peace between the couple. However, tensions resurfaced as Doug filed for divorce, and Ashley made further complaints, including another injunction filing. A psychological evaluation for both parties was scheduled to be discussed in a hearing set for September 30, 2020. Tragically, Doug was killed three days before the hearing. Ashley's defense attorney, Neil Taylor, argued that she acted in self-defense. “The reason my client shot her husband was out of fear for her life. On September 27, threats and intimidation turned to physical violence, and she was forced to defend her life,” Taylor stated. Prosecutors, however, portrayed a different motive. Assistant State Attorney Suzanne O'Donnell argued, “This was a custody battle that this mother was going to win at all costs, and the cost was the life of Doug Benefield.” Among the testimonies was Chris Gillum, a domestic violence investigator with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. He highlighted a statement by Ashley years before the shooting that raised concerns after Doug's death. “She let out like a screech or a high-pitched scream and she says, ‘I will do whatever I have to do to keep my baby you [expletive],'” Gillum testified. Gillum, who had recently passed a South Carolina injunction violation case reported by Ashley to the State Attorney's Office, mentioned that the statement initially did not seem like a direct threat. “At that point, it was just not relevant for my case. There was no reason, but circumstances had changed. I thought that was information that needed to be heard,” he explained. As the trial continues, the testimonies highlight the deeply troubled relationship between Doug and Ashley Benefield, with the legal battles and personal conflicts leading up to the tragic shooting being meticulously scrutinized in court. More than two dozen protesters gathered outside the Manatee County Courthouse in downtown Bradenton on Wednesday morning to support Ashley Benefield, a former ballerina accused of murdering her estranged husband. Benefield, 32, faces charges of second-degree murder for the death of her husband, Doug Benefield, a case set to go to trial on July 22. The case has garnered significant media attention, inspiring podcasts, true-crime TV shows like CBS's “48 Hours,” and drawing Court TV coverage. Ashley Benefield's supporters argue that she acted in self-defense and that there should not be a murder trial. Supporters, holding signs that read “We stand with Ashley,” “There is nothing illegal about defending your life,” and “Believe victims of domestic violence,” gathered to voice their disapproval of the charges. Barbara Russell, a social worker and mental health professional among the demonstrators, stated, “Ashley Benefield was doing what every American has a right to do, and that is defend her life in her own home.” She described the charges as a “miscarriage of justice,” adding, “That's why people are out today demanding justice.” On September 27, 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, claiming she had shot her husband in self-defense. Doug Benefield, who was 58 at the time, had gunshot wounds to his right leg, right arm, and chest. He died later that night in the hospital. Four .45 caliber casings were found on the floor of Ashley's bedroom, along with a bullet on the floor and two more embedded in the walls. Court documents reveal the Benefields had a history of domestic issues, including a contentious custody battle over their child. Ashley Benefield and her lawyer have argued she was a victim of Doug's repeated abuse, including stalking, physical violence, and an incident where Doug allegedly shot a gun into the ceiling. However, Judge Whyte, following a Stand Your Ground hearing, ruled that Ashley was not entitled to immunity from prosecution. Prosecutors Suzanne O'Donnell and Rebecca Freel argued that Doug's death was not a singular act of self-defense but the result of a "lengthy, concerted effort." Catherine Dolan, who marched alongside her 13-year-old daughter, Carolina, expressed concern that prosecuting Ashley could discourage other domestic violence survivors from defending themselves. “This outcome is disheartening for survivors of domestic violence and victims' advocates,” Dolan said. “I hope this case can lead to some positive change.” Ashley Benefield's lawyer, Neil Taylor, stated, “Our law firm supports and stands behind Ashley Benefield 100%,” emphasizing that “domestic violence is an epidemic in America and bias against women permeates all our institutions.” The Manatee County Sheriff's Office previously stated that detectives found “no evidence that” Ashley Benefield “was acting in self-defense when she fired multiple shots at her husband” and that there were “no signs that she had been physically abused.” Ashley Benefield appeared in court for a hearing this week, with her trial scheduled for July 22 at 8:30 a.m. If convicted, she faces up to life in prison for second-degree murder with a firearm, according to Florida Statutes. And that's it...Season 2 has come to an amazing end...player, coach and pundit. A living Legend (and she won't agree with us, but she is)...Kath MorganNowadays, Coleg y Cymoedd and the University of South Wales British National Championship winning coach in 2024, their jewel in the crown, Kathryn Morgan, the first woman in Wales to pass the UEFA A Licence, who made more history as the first female pundit in Qatar at the 2022 FIFA mens World Cup to commentate on the Welsh games alongside the BBC.Kathryn, who had a successful career as a professional female footballer, is now just as formidable in her media career working for BBC Radio Cymru and Radio Wales Sport as part of the broadcaster's coverage. She joined the likes of Nathan Blake, Iwan Roberts, Danny Gabbidon and Neil Taylor in Qatar for three weeks during the country's first appearance in the World Cup since 1958 – delivering news bulletins and leading a Q&A podcast with the Football Association of Wales (FAW).A former international player with over 50 caps to her name, Kathryn represented several teams during her 15-year footballing career including Inter Cardiff (now Cardiff City), Barry Town, Bristol Rovers, and the Welsh national women's team, becoming the first female footballer in Wales to secure 50 caps. After attending the 2016 World Cup in France, she was invited by BBC Radio Cymru to join the channel as a pundit, offering commentary on the competition. Since then, she has commentated on several national games and is a regular contributor to the famous Welsh Language S4C Soccer show "Sgorio".From a young age, Kathryn was determined to play football and she tells us all about how at seven years old, she persuaded boys in the playground to let her join them after watching and practicing their techniques. Her passion became her life's work when she joined Inter Cardiff Women's team at 17, kickstarting her career and replied to an advert in the paper that led to her getting an International tryout.More than all this. Anyone who is fortunate to have spent any time with Kath knows what you are about to find out. That there are few people in this world who you just feel better having spent time in their company. Kath's raw, authentic and true self helps us provide a space where you as an aspiring coach or player can spend time, free of judgement and safely asking yourself the key questions you need to draw strength for your journey. Of the 30 episodes we have recorded, none are quite like this one...Enjoy and Happy St Davids Day to everyone around the world...Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus...
This week we continue the discussion that we started at the end of our last show; with our admiration of the almighty power of the guitar and the guitar hero! This time around we are going to play guitarists, or guitar passages or leads in songs that caught our ears at some point in our lives that made us truly stop and listen. It's not always about the training, finesse, dexterity, or speed a player has or even the style of music or song that is being played. If you are into guitar and the sound of strings being plucked and bent then you know… It's just something you feel deep down that gets to your heart and soul! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old Guitar World and Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! [Digital Gonzo 2013] The 150th episode of Digital Gonzo. This was a one-off show inspired by the episode of Community 'Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'. It's a sit-down gaming session conducted over Skype with myself as Dungeon Master and my guests as a team of adventurers. For this one we were using the flexible, simple ruleset of Advanced Fighting Fantasy by Graham Bottley which itself stems from the gamebooks of Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone (The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Deathtrap Dungeon) and detailed in the starter book Dungeoneer. This is the first of the two adventures within that book. I wanted to bring you guys something different, in the style I have honed over the years so there's music and sound FX as well as a hefty chunk of silliness and getting into character. The lengthier fights have been edited for pacing but you're mainly missing a lot of dice rolls. The team that begins this story comprises of the following. Thrale Copperhelm: A tough-as-nails dwarf, played by Neil Taylor of GameBurst Lastern Darkfire: An elf fresh out of the forests, played by Mark Reay of The A.I. Bots Kellis Payge: A human mage from the city watch of Chalice, played by Sharon Shaw of School of Movies Harron Brondyn: A sarcastic thief played by Matt Ramsey of Do Try This at Home Focus is on character and story over action and complex systems, almost closer to an audio drama than the recording of a game. The guest soundtrack for this week is the original World of Warcraft OST by Jason Hayes, Tracy W. Bush, Derek Duke, and Glenn Stafford. Many thanks to my guests, who played brilliantly and went easy on me in my first-time role as Dungeon Master. The combat rules were still being learned by all of us, also Gonzo is an adult podcast and we use adult language in this. And thank you all for making this one of the warmest, smartest, funniest communities on the internet for 150 episodes of Gonzo.
In this episode of the pod Ben Haines is joined by former Liverpool, Manchester City, West Ham and England goalkeeper David James and ex-Wales, Swansea and Aston Villa left-back, Neil Taylor as they deep dive into Sunday's biggest football stories. They start with Mikel Arteta – who made the headlines after an extensive interview he gave to Spanish newspaper, Marca. In it he talked about turning around the fortunes of the club, how impressed he is by Kai Havertz and his relationship with Pep Guardiola. They get a fan's perspective, as Harry Symeou from the Chronicles of a Gooner Podcast joins the chat and gives his reasons as to why many fans would not be happy if Havertz did join the club. And the elephant in the room gets mentioned too… the future of Declan Rice - will he go to Arsenal or Manchester City? (David also gives a West Ham fan angle to the debate…which includes a move abroad.) Then, with news of Aaron Ramsey being linked to his boyhood club, Cardiff City – Ben, David and Neil discuss ‘romantic' transfers and if the lull of being back home and nostalgia is a key factor for players in the transfer market. And David and Neil talk matters off the pitch – with the projects that they are working on to promote diversity in the game. Neil shares his work with the PFA's Asian inclusion scheme and David lets us in on the job he is doing to promote more diversity in refereeing at all levels of the sport, from grassroots to the Premier League. ‘ A Radio Owlsnest Special - The making of ‘In the Temple of the Muse' - Episode 30 ‘ Let me take you back to 2008 when I released my second solo album ‘In the Temple of the Muse'. After the release of my first album ‘In the House of Stone and Light' it took me a bloody long time - yes ages - to release my next opus… on my own independent record label ‘Ironingboard Records'. It occurred to me that it was well time to tell the ‘OwlHeads' the story behind this rather homemade release. I still had some of the great musicians from the “House of Stone and Light” sessions involved with me … Jimmy Copley, Neil Taylor, Russell Broom, etc., and they helped make this album very special to me. It was quite an introspective album; my life had been impacted by the deaths of my parents and some friends - a reckoning of mortality at that time. I was determined to make a record that reflected my emotional state during that period… that hopefully others could, and would relate to. Feel. And in the process, some of the songs on the album were cut by major artists - including Robbie Williams, Elaine Page and Mickey Thomas. It proved to me that when you create something from experience and the wounded heart…. you are liable to connect - on a universal level. So dear OwlHeads let me guide you personally - intimately - track by track - song by song - through this sophomore album. I'll try to relate the magic, as well as the struggles, that made this record come together. Love Martin
Neil Taylor is many things - a musician, a meditation teacher, a yoga teacher, and a bodyworker. In this conversation, Neil shares how travel and lifestyle as a professional musician forced him to address health and wellbeing and led him to a meditation retreat that sparked his spiritual path. For Neil, yoga is about connecting with what is most important—our awareness. As he explains, “We all have a physical body, thoughts, emotions, and an underlying sense of consciousness itself. As we become aware of these different aspects of our human experience, we can become more skillful at navigating the inward path and tuning into what is most important.” You can learn more about Neil at www.neiltayloryoga.com @neiltaylorhuman www.dharmamoon.com.
