In this episode we interview Alesha Serada PhD about her article Who Speaks Tho Fan? Deconstructing the Constructed Language of Jade Empire.
In today's Daily Fix:Sony has revealed the lineup of new games coming to PlayStation Plus in March. Headlining the list is Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which is a fairly new game, having dropped just a few months ago. The fourth Dragon Age game failed to hit EA's sales goals, so putting the game on PS Plus so soon is likely an attempt at recouping some cash. In other news, BioWare's co-founder put Microsoft on blast for some bad advice during the original Xbox era. It was Microsoft's suggestion that cult favorite RPG Jade Empire be released for the OG Xbox right at the end of its life, just a few months shy of the Xbox 360's debut. Dr. Greg Zeschuk is convinced Jade Empire could've been a hit for BioWare if the game was held for newer hardware. And finally, comic book writer Gail Simone has seen the canceled Wonder Woman game, and is singing its praises. Too bad we'll never get to see for ourselves.

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I've said it a thousand times and I'll keep beating the drum: video games are art. And Psychonauts is as artistic as any game I've played for this podcast. A funky ass platformer starring a kid with psychic powers that scapes the circus and runs off to psychic power summer camp. The levels take place in the minds of the people at this camp, and you do stuff like battling Napoleon in a board game, crushing a fish city Ala Godzilla, and solving the age old question of "who is the Milkman?" This game came out on top of our Xbox Patreon Poll back in October, and I have to say, I'm glad it has the cult following that it does, because I'm drinking the kool-aid. Minus that last level. Fuck that level. My buddy Patrick agrees, as you'll hear when you listen in on the phone call we had about Tim Schafer's Psychonauts. And before we find the milkman, I use my powerful brain to put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if indie games have overtaken AAA games from a quality standpoint? Do I ever check out the speed run charity events? And since we're talking Psychonauts, what psychedelics have I played with in the past? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! My guest this week is game developer Aaryn Flynn! Aaryn is the CEO of Inflexion Games, whose first title, Nightingale, will hit early release on Steam sometime this year. Aaryn spent much of his career at Bioware, where he worked his way up from tools programmer to Studio General Manager. He had his hands in a number of massive titles including the Mass Effect series, the Baldur's Gate series, the Dragon Age series, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.Aaryn and I get deep into the weeds on development of Nightingale, including game mechanics, the importance of nailing a certain vibe for the player, and the challenges and complexity of creating a new game from scratch. We cover Aaryn's career at Bioware, and we talk about the use of early release for small developers and how any creative endeavor has to balance the business and creative sides in order to succeed. Enjoy my conversation with Aaryn Flynn!Check out Nightingale on Steam or their social media.Find Brian McClellan at his website, on Twitter and Instagram, or find his books on Amazon, direct from his bookstore, or wherever books are sold!Don't forget to support the show on Patreon, or pick up some swag on Redbubble. This week the ladies talk about Jade Empire, which is a 2005 game from Bioware. In this action-RPG you play as the last spirit monk, working to fight the corrupt forces around you. (Apologies for this episode's recording quality.) I don't think David Gaider needs much of an introduction. He, affectionately, is mister Dragon Age. He was the one tasked with dreaming up the entire world and everything in it. We talk about it in this episode of One-to-one. BioWare's James Ohlen apparently gave Gaider a historic atlas and an "off you go". But how did he go about creating it - where do you even start with something like that? And what did the original vision for Dragon Age look like? Well, I can tell you it didn't have any Darkspawn in it, which is wild, considering Darkspawn were the main threat in the game and featured heavily in the series thereafter. And get this: originally, you weren't going to be able to cast any offensive magic spells in the game either - imagine that! Gaider was also a key figure in the rise of LGBTQ+ representation and same-sex relationships in BioWare games, and is the creator of arguably the studio's most famous characters in this regard, Dorian. Curiously, though, it wasn't Gaider who started the same-sex relationships push but someone else, in Jade Empire - he doesn't remember who. 'Whaaat we can do that?' He remembers thinking when he saw it, and the rest was history. But being gay was a side of himself he kept pretty quiet at BioWare, feeling it wouldn't gel with the "frat boy" atmosphere he felt around him. It wasn't until Canada legalised same-sex marriage and a wedding email thread went around, garndering many enthusiastic replies, that he realised he'd maybe worried for no reason, and relaxed. Gaider has had a remarkable effect on BioWare and its games. And to think that he initially turned down a job offer there because it seemed like a scruffy company with an uncertain future, compared to his managerial post at a hotel nearby. I know: he wasn't even working in games! But he did live in games, having played Dungeons & Dragons since it began and in writing parlour LARPS of his own. BioWare and Dragon Age were quite a long time ago for Gaider now, though. He talks me through his reasons for leaving and how he felt the company was changing. Fast-forward to today and he lives on the other side of the world in Australia, where he helped co-found a studio making a brilliant-sounding role-playing musical called Stray Gods: An Adventure Musical. But how does a musical RPG work? David Gaider tells me a lot more about it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Caroline lives in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. She began her career as an actor and transitioned to directing. Caroline works at Humanoid Studios. When this episode was recorded she was with Bioware, for whom she worked for 13 years. Anthem (2019) was Bioware's first venture in performance capture. As Producer and Director at Bioware, Caroline covered all aspects of performance in storytelling from casting to voice over to performance capture. For emotional and compelling content our in-game characters rely on real actors giving solid performances to create the most dynamic, realistic experiences possible. This creates the immersive environment for our players that BioWare is best known for. Caroline's credits include Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Anthem.
Your parents had them and you wanted one. Remember that old leather seat or perhaps the old fabric ones? The ones where you sat in the back and argued over the music that would be played. It's what bioware was working on while KOTOR 2 was handed over to obsidian. I wound up passing on it then, I think due to it getting an m rating at the time (which was changed for the remaster). I checked it out briefly on ea play through gamepass but did not get very far. Was surprised how clumsy the combat felt. Not sure it aged very well.16bitwars-nomad Owned, played the mess out of it, and finished it. If I remember correctly, you had different characters you could play through the story with. With the new Mass Effect game coming out it's really important that we remember why gaming is so fun, and it's just not because it is an escape. I'm a firm believer that gaming can train you for real life. When we see the conversation trees in the new game, like Mass Effect, that is being re released and remastered. We see the ability to simulate life in general, to go through those experiences. When they may not be possible to go through. Otherwise, we really need to think about that, whenever we are playing a game. How would we react in real life to a situation. Try to conscientiously. Think about this. Whenever you're playing a video game. When you play video games, you can make a conscious effort to improve your real life skills. If you really think about it. It's kind of like reading a book, and thinking about what you're reading and that book. We've all been taught by a teacher to analyze. When you go and you play Mass Effect Legendary Edition, try to really analyze those conversations. See how you would react to every scenario in real life. Try to immerse yourself in that conversation tree system. What that will do is that will help you gain valuable experience. Yes, I know there are some people out there who say, video games are a waste of time. This is simply just not the facts. We live in a future now where video games are much better than what they have been in the past. This is not your simple platformer that your parents used to play video games are complicated systems. And the same holds true with Mass Effect, even though it's over 10 years old. It has a very well built, system that simulates the conversations that you would have in real life. The fact this game came out in 2007, really sets the bar high for what is possible if you set your mind to it. When it comes to a video game, a video game. If done correctly, can be a real life simulator, it can create a huge difference. And what is trying to be accomplished. When you see a video game. One of the goals of a video game is to simulate real life. A lot of people forget that video games. From a graphical perspective, is trying to bring in the experience of what you would experience if you were looking around the real world. We have seen games such as Assassin's Creed, try to provide an educational experience. Mass Effect in its own way, does the exact same thing. It tries to provide an educational experience when it comes to dialogue conversation. It has very complicated dialogue trees that the developers had spent much time on creating this was a hallmark of BioWare and is what set the company apart when it came to creating video games, as we see in Star Wars Knights of the Republic, then Jade Empire for those who remember that series. Then we also see this dialog system come into play with Dragon Age, which is now back to Mass Effect really cherish this remastered edition, and what the developers have been able to accomplish when it comes to this dialogue system. The dialogue system, truly does set the bar high. The bar is extremely high when it comes to this system, and it changed, video games forever. Really try to use it as a learning experience, try to translate, playing Mass Effect into something that you can implement into your own life. The biggest misnomer is the idea that video games don't translate the Why do you not believe that why use it to develop yourself, use it to develop your work ethic, use it to learn dialogue options that you can use your own life. This is a cutting edge idea as crazy as it sounds, because not a lot of people connect the two real life to video games. However, you can use video games to train for those moments for those moments where you may not be prepared, and video games can compare you prepare you for those moments. So next time you go to a big meeting, remember you probably did it in a video game, try to translate that and use those skills in your own life. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgengame/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nextgengame/support
Hey everyone welcome back to the podcast, glad to have you guys back. And one of the reasons why I am in a awesome voice like this is because I want to be able to produce more content that's going to be able to help you out. And this voice just makes it more epic especially since we're talking about the Mass Effect Legendary Edition today. And this edition has been a long time coming for sure. Mass Effect came out over 10 years ago. In fact, it came out in 2007, Mass Effect has had a dramatic impact on the video game industry. To give you a little bit of history here. Mass Effect came out on the heels of games such as Jade Empire, which was their first original IP, When it comes to video games. Over time, going back even before that period. The creators of Mass Effect, BioWare also created the games of Knights of the Old Republic, which was based upon Star Wars. Obviously Bioware had a tense amount, and ability to create these titles, because they had had experience creating incredible video games. Mass Effect was very hyped up when it first came out, it was, it was released around the time of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation, three. Now, it did not release on the PlayStation three. It did, however, release on Windows computers. And we see this dynamic of Mass Effect growing a new system, and a new idea of what an RPG. Could be. It's an incredible dynamic when we see this. Mass Effect, changed the way we thought about RPGs. That is why it is so incredibly exciting that we see a new Mass Effect game coming out today. Well it's not coming out today but it's coming out very soon. And there is an intense excitement surrounding the new release, because mass effect has been upgraded. It will now support 4k resolution, along with a legendary new compact system upgrade. The new combat system will make a huge difference in the original game of Mass Effects. The main focus of this title is definitely on that combat system. All three games have been remastered in the original trilogy of Mass Effect. It will be a compiled nation of everything that's great and regards the Mass Effect and will include all the deal sees. There is also a graphical and gameplay update as we discussed before, particularly the combat will be updated. And we're also going to see this on new systems, where the graphics are updated a little bit more in regards to next generation PS five, and Xbox. As many of you may know if you've played Mass Effect it follows commander Scheper Commander Shepard is an elite human soldier who unites the world in a fight against an alien race. It is a great long trilogy that brings many elements in when it comes to character creation, And we cannot understate dates, the ability of Mass Effect to do just that. The amazing character creation we see in Mass Effect is just absolutely amazing. In fact, the character creation is so done so well that it travels through the entire trilogy, any choice that you make in the trilogy will continue on. This allows Mass Effect to bring a certain dynamic, we do not often see, and video games, a dynamic of choices, impacting those choices that have been done in earlier games. This was rare at the time it was something that had never been done. Now I'm not saying that it was an incredible adjustment to being able to create video games. However, it did have an impact on games that have involve significant amounts of choice. Mass Effect was also one of the first games that tended to create those gray areas when it came to the choice system, previous iterations we saw very clear choices between good and evil. Mass Effect did change that a lot by those character choices, and allowing those to go along a line. That was a little bit more gray and the choices were much more challenging than they had been in previous iterations. And I think this was just due to the amount of work that the development team spends on Mass Effect over time, and it made an incredible difference when we see Mass Effect, and what ..... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgengame/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nextgengame/support

[Digital Gonzo 2013] This is the first part of our epic trilogy of review podcasts focusing on the Mass Effect game series from Bioware. Originally released in 2007 on Xbox 360 and following on the heels of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire, this was the Canadian developer's original take on a serious Sci-Fi space opera. The first game is not without its flaws and the frustrating combat, slow beginning, vehicle sections, simplistic hacking, texture pop, and crazy glitches are all hauled over the coals, however, this is balanced with effusive praise for the characterization, in-depth discussions about the textured and detailed worlds they have built, first rate voice acting, storyline and narrative sweep. If you've played it and enjoyed it overall you will be well at home. If you haven't played it we keep the major spoilers for a section at the end so you can listen in and find out what all the fuss is about. My crew are Matt Ramsey of GamerDork, Neil Taylor of GameBurst, James Perkins of GameBurst and Geek Wad, Justin Smith of Last Save Loaded and Jerome McIntosh of the Gonzo planet community. We'll be back in a month to talk about Mass Effect 2 and then four weeks after that for Mass Effect 3.
