This week's pick is the wonderful 1977 Shaw Brothers King Kong rip-off Mighty Peking Man. Also known as Goliathon, a giant ape-like creature with a rubbery face is brought to Hong Kong from the Himalayas and exploited for profit. A rampage of mass destruction follows once it escapes.
Nate and Jimmy set their sights on wrangling Utam Goliathon (aka “Ah-Wang”) from the top of Jardine House—only to be interrupted by a confused Kaguya wearing a risqué cosplay bought by Jimmy! This gives Nate the idea to have her talk Goliathon into climbing down the building. But she's not happy about any of this! Featuring the final performance of Kim Lacanilao as Kaguya. Spartan Race had their Kids World Championship in the Bahamas this year but there didn't seem to be much talk about it. Athletes regardless of their age work hard to do what they do so we reached out to one of the winners of the weekend! Savanna Salinas won for the girls 12-14 age group and has a pretty impressive background in ninja! She completed her first half marathon at the age of 6 and her first triathalon at the age of 5! There are a lot of incredible events that don't get the love they deserve, I would put Goliathon towards the top of that list. We weren't able to go down to the event due to the aforementioned house construction but I looked through the results for a potential guest. I saw that there was only one athlete who reached the status of David this year (which is a pretty damn big deal). Isaac Waychoff was that athlete so I reached out to him about coming on the show! It was great hearing about his gymnastic and ninja background. We walk through the 3 different difficulties of each of their 12 grand scale obstacles (watch videos of them here), his attitude with taking on this event, how it feels to be a 2x David achiever, and much more! 0:00 – 4:25 – Intro 4:25 – 15:15 – Quick News 15:15 – 16:22 – Content Preface 16:22 - 59:27 - Isaac Waychoff Interview 59:27 - End – Outro Next episode we plan to either have another elite from Spartan Big Bear 3K, or a recent ultra world record breaker, or live coverage from Tough Mudder New England, or something else! ____ News Stories: FIT Sun Mountain Challenge Unofficial Hyrox Season Changes Jack Bauer Injury Charity Fick Death Rylan's Back 2 Back Ministries Trip Bubbles and Zach Tait Broke Deka Mile Team Record Viking Obstacle Race Desperately Needs Volunteers ASCO Spartacus Dash Podiums Spartan Monterey Super Podiums Savage Charlotte Podiums Beggers and Thieves Competition Podiums Goliathon Podiums Spin Secret Link Hocket Secret Link Dream Secret Link Shadow Secret Link Tic Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 231. Mike finally crossed Goliathon off of his OCR bucket list! As excited as he was to finally run the event, he was also nervous about his lack of training. Katelyn assured him that since it is a local race it will have simple obstacles ... but Mike knew better! It's a typical OCR until you're staring down one of their many ninja inspired rigs which luckily have 3 lanes of difficulty! Green for beginners or for those that want to play it safe, orange for a solid challenge, and blue if you are looking to push yourself. With only one attempt for your score, you need to choose wisely. For this episode you'll hear a bit from Jamie Rhan (Captain NBC from American Ninja Warrior), some start line audio, an interview with Dana who is a cofounder of the event, and a few other great people. Lastly is a sleep deprived and heat exhausted recap from Katelyn and Mike. Highly recommend that you watch the obstacles here! We plan to return and cover the event more in detail next time! This week we have another great episode to help you train smarter for your next OCR. In this episode, I give you my tip of the week on how my wife figured out a simple trick to make your next barbed wire crawl alittle more pleasant. SGX Coach Brad Sims is on to give a race recap to the Goliathon Race held last month. This is an incredibly descriptive summary of all 12 of the obstacles that were in the race. This sounds like a fun race if you are on the East coast. There will be another one coming up this fall you can sign up for. In our research review, I discuss inspiratory muscle training. This unique resisted breathing training has been shown to lead to a variety of performance enhancements. In this study we see how IMT may improve running performance when performed daily and as part of your warm up routine. This week coach's interview, we have on Michael Mullin from Integrated Fitness Training. I had the please of hosting a workshop earlier this year, where Michael provided incredibly useful and eye opening information and training/rehab strategies. The focus of this training was on breathing, but we also got into many applicable training principles. In this interview he explains why breathing should not be overlooked and how it is the foundation of everything we do. He discusses the different physiological, biochemical, and postural effects of proper and improper breathing and simple ways you can incorporate breathing into your training. While many focus on exhaling during exertion, we talk about all of the other breathing strategies that you need to consider. We get into why Michael doesn't like the term posture and how positioning is the key. We discuss positioning and breathing during many common exercises like squatting and pull ups. Even how many posture cues you have heard, may be making your posture even worse. We also talk about technique for running and even monkey bars, to maximize performance and to keep you moving more efficiently. All this and much more in this weeks episode. Episode 78 - Matt B. went to California last week to take on the Temecula Spartan Sprint. He got a chance to meet lots of great west coast folks while visiting, which inspired this episode. You will hear the meeting of the podcast minds, as he sits down with Laurie Hale of the Getting Dirty Podcast. He also plays an interview with Ernesto Gonzales. Ernesto took on the 5 Race Rodina Challenge with some interesting results. Today's episode is sponsored by Goliathon.com. It's not a race, it's a mission.
I've heard some interesting criticisms about Indianapolis lately. Apparently Rolling Stone magazine allegedly referred to this city as (paraphrasing) a great place to grab some food and use the restroom while you're heading to Chicago, Detroit, or Cincinnati. Ironic, since I now use Rolling Stone magazine to line my cat's litter box. A more-respected friend of mine who recently moved here said it feels like Indianapolis is stuck in a time warp where it was constantly twenty years earlier here than it is on the rest of the planet ... fashion-wise, culture-wise, music-wise, etc. Another local musician remarked (again ... paraphrasing) that this is where all of the new ideas from the coasts and Chicago eventually filter to in order to be excremented out of the country once and for all. Nice, eh? On the surface, Modern Motion may appear to be a throwback band, nostalgia act, or some sort of 80's tribute. Closer examination, however, reveals a greater musical diversity, depth, and technical prowess than what was typical of that era ... and trust me, I am a player of that era, I have a Yamaha DX setup in my basement to prove it. I, on the other hand, liken this band to other bands of ambitious youths, like Goliathon ( | ) who inherently understand a style of music even though it may have been made before they were born, and are able to combine it with more modern sensibilities and make it appealing to a contemporary audience. While much of the era they emulate was very self-absorbed and simplistic, Modern Motion exhibits a diversity -- or even an optimistic/pessimistic duality -- in their approach that bears careful, and repeated, listening. Trust me, it continues to get better each time. Links referenced in the show: Modern Motion can be found here | | | | You can get their Big Mode EP, and a lot of other musical goodness, via their . We'd like to thank for being our participating audience this evening. We should probably try to get her on the show soon. Apparently my memory was faulty. We were drinking from the , not the 2002 one. It is my subtle tribute to a classic episode of the , which inspired my purchase, despite the fact the podcast was warning me not to purchase it. Though the name of the band was not given, the dueling drum solo on a spinning riser trick was made famous by the Newsboys. You can catch a video of one such battle .
The last time I interviewed Goliation, November of 2009, they were literally a garage band. Or was it a laundry room band? I sat in on part of a practice, heard some really rough demos, and chatted with them out on the patio (they were mostly still living at home at the time). I remember at the time being most impressed with the "feel" (for lack of a better term) with which they played. Sure some of them had had some musical training here and there, but to make the leap from rote recital to instinctively playing in a complex poly-rhythm/multimeter composition, to have a grasp of the power of dynamics, and above all an understanding of how to properly play with other musicians -- sitting out at times; stepping up at times -- well, maybe for one or two guys, but certainly not for an entire band. When I learned they were planning to start work with a producer, I was both enthused at the possibilities, but quietly saddened at the prospect that a more-refined ear would somehow cull the unbridled experimentation and innovation of a great band. Three years later, this interview anachronistically plugs the release of what was then their upcoming CD, Pretend It's Not Happening, which allayed any fear I may have had about someone else tampering with a band that I loved. Goliathon still remains a force to be reckoned with. Sure, the compositions are a bit tighter, the sound is a bit more refined, but the willingness to experiment, while kept a bit more accessible, is still first and foremost. No longer a bunch of kids in a garage, Goliathon are now serious players in the local scene, commanding respect and attention from several of their peers, occasionally on this show. I look forward to seeing what the next year brings them. Links referenced in the show: Goliathon can be found here: | | | They first appeared back on . It's finally time to see who is the best. To find out if all those months of preparation will finally pay off when you take it head to head with some of the greatest players out there. To gather in front of some of the greatest, most-loyal fans out there and see if you have the skills and single-minded determination to take home a historic championship that is coveted by everyone, but achieved by only a few. But enough about the Colt's being in the Superbowl tomorrow, let's talk music. I'd been wanting to do this for three and a half years, pretty much ever since I first started Indy In-Tune and saw . It took a few years, and a chance meeting with Joanne over at before the idea looked feasible, and even longer to get all the pieces in place. But, just a few short months later, here they are, the top ten bands in the 2010 Podcast Battle of the Bands, as chosen by you, the fans. I'll warn you now, if you haven't yet listened to this show, and you enjoy the suspense, you should probably do that now before reading any further. The battle itself was joined by 21 artists who submitted 47 tracks which were voted on by 285 fans to come up with this list. In addition, we had a few generous sponsors who put up prize packages of their own, which became additional "category based prizes" as determined by a panel of independent judges. This gave us the best of both worlds: The popularity-contest-style competition, plus an impartial and mostly-objective competition. The podcast deals the former, but let's take a minute and look at the later: We had three judged categories this year. Best Lyrics: Winner: Jeff DeHerdt for "I'm All the Friends that I Got." Best Acoustic/Solo Performance: Winners: Tim Spainhower for "I've Come to Learn" and Branch Gordon for "That's What She Said" (Tie). Runner Up: Jamie Nichole for "Missing You." Runners Up: Goliathon for "Guilt of the Faultless" and Stagnant Pools for "Livid Livin'." Catch Curtis wins an in-store performance from our generous sponsors at . I think one of the great joys of music as personal expression -- that is, the thing that elevates groups from, "Yeah, I like those guys," to "You don't understand: you've got to hear these guys the way I do" -- is the element of discovery. I've talked a lot before about how disc jockeys (and my father) influenced my early musical tastes, simply because, as an impressionistic youth, I instantly transferred their "cool factor" to the music they were playing. Years later however, I seem to be most attached to music that either I found myself, or was introduced to through a friend. Either way, the stuff I really obsess over and get into is almost-always far off the mainstream of what other people are aware of, but is usually something that people would love ... if they only knew it existed. This brings me to Goliathon, a band I first discovered about two weeks ago -- in one of those classic, "How the heck did this slip under my radar!?" moments. They had registered for our much-lauded , and pretty much right away, I was drawn to their "somewhat retro" use of dynamics, tempo changes, and instrumental voices -- particularly, as mentioned in the interview, their use of saxophone and Hammond organ in a rock milieu. In an age of quantized, compressed, volume-leveled, digitized, music, it's great to see a band fall back on the spirit of pushing the envelope, throwing out the click track, playing by feel, and creating something truly organic and heartfelt ... not because of some technical or musical reason, but simply because it sounds cool. Certainly for a bunch of guys born in the 1980's, one quickly gets the impression that they actually do understand this ethic from the music of the '60's and '70's, but they don't spend a lot of time over-analyzing it -- which anyone who spends more than ten minutes geeking out over music with me would probably say is a good thing. While I'm looking forward to seeing what a seasoned producer can do for their sound, hopefully whomever is eventually charged with the task will understand and stay true to this core of what I think Goliathon's strengths are. Links referenced in the show: Goliathon can be found here: | | | . They were featured on the 2009 Sampler and as park intro music for the 2009 . Their 6-song demo was recorded at Butler University and is available on their MySpace page. Gear-heads and analog synth aficionados will get a kick out of their use of the classic 1983 . Next year they are hoping to work with "Iron" Bob Fauts from the band . and Indy In-Tune are proud to present the first (hopefully annual) "Virtual Battle of the Bands." through the month of December; voting and judging is through the month of January. So far, over $1000 in cash and prizes is on the line, with that purse expected to grow as we try to bring on sponsors. Check out our for details as they become available.
