The technological revolution has taken over running. Dr. John Holash and Dr. Cody Ray van Rassel are specialists in exercise physiology at the University of Calgary. We brought them on today's show to discuss topics including: What are some of the most exciting new technologies in athletics How the benefits of super shoes are measured What is the role of wearable technologies in advancing the sport What new technological innovations we might see in the near future Whether the humble potato is the ideal fuel source for endurance athletes At the elite level, technologies like carbon plated shoes and wavelight pacing technologies have led to huge breakthroughs in performances. John and Cody spend much of their time modeling the impact of technologies like these, making them ideal guests to give you a glimpse into how new technologies are completely transforming what's possible in running. This week's show brought to you by: Kila Running When we first got connected with the team at Kila insoles, they explained that they can make high-performance insoles perfectly designed for your feet within days, just by using the Kila Running app. All you have to do is open the app and place the phone on the ground, then take a few photos of your feet using the FaceID camera. This allows them to create a full 3D scan within minutes. They don't even need your shoe size! Once you get past the weirdness of taking photos of your feet, it's pretty cool to see the images for yourself and then get the notification that the scans are being sent to their North American orthotics lab. After that the insoles arrive as fast as that same week. Kila isn't the first company to use an iPhone or iPad to scan your feet for orthotics—it's actually becoming the standard method doctors and sports medicine clinics use to create a foot cast. But Kila is bringing that same technology to the direct-to-consumer space, at about one-quarter the cost. Most insoles feel bulky and rigid, but Kila custom insoles are more like having a layer of supershoe foam underfoot propelling you through your stride. All you have to do when they arrive is slip out your old insoles and put these in. It might take some getting used to the full-foot contact but it's pretty amazing how great they feel and you won't be disappointed. Every runner deals with mentally struggling and that barrier when in a race. Alyssa Clark shares her insights on the mental and physical aspects of ultra running, emphasizing the importance of bravery, self-belief, and community support. She highlights how mental barriers are just voices that can be overcome and how true winning is about personal growth, not just podium finishes.Alyssa discusses the significance of consistency in training, noting that building an aerobic base takes years of dedication. She stresses the importance of patience in endurance training and warns against racing too frequently, as it can hinder long-term progress. Instead, selecting key races and optimizing workouts leads to better performance. To navigate tough moments, Alyssa relies on her mantra, "This is what winning feels like," and encourages runners to find joy in the process to sustain long-term success. She also highlights the value of a strong support team and having interests outside of running to maintain overall happiness.Ultimately, Alyssa's message is about balance—embracing the highs and lows of running, taking breaks when needed, and maintaining passion to avoid burnout. Whether a beginner or a seasoned runner, her wisdom offers valuable lessons for anyone looking to improve their performance and enjoyment in the sport.Huge Thank you to Alyssa for coming on the show!Want to be coached for your next ultramarathon by me and my team? In episode 397 of the Real Life Runners Podcast, we focused on the often overlooked component for improved running performance and injury prevention: the nervous system. While many runners emphasize training plans, mileage, strength training, nutrition, and paces, the regulation of the nervous system is crucial for optimal results. We delve into the autonomic nervous system, explaining the roles of the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) systems. Signs of nervous system dysregulation, such as constant fatigue, trouble sleeping, and frequent injuries, are discussed. We explore the methods for better nervous system regulation, including proper training plans, HRV monitoring, recovery techniques, and lifestyle adjustments like adequate sleep and nutrition. The episode underscores the importance of balancing stress and recovery to enhance running performance and overall well-being.02:26 The Importance of the Nervous System in Running03:20 Understanding the Autonomic Nervous System04:12 Balancing the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Systems08:45 Signs of Nervous System Dysregulation12:44 Regulating Your Nervous System for Better Performance16:09 Using HRV to Monitor Nervous System Health23:03 Building a Stronger Parasympathetic Response25:24 Lifestyle Factors for Nervous System Health Thanks for Listening!!Be sure to hit FOLLOW on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast player Leave a review on Apple Podcasts. Instead of letting Google's AI dictate success, marketers must focus on real business health—profitability and growth. What if everything we thought we knew about running shoes, from energy return to performance enhancement, was wrong? Scott Tucker, the CEO of Vimazi is today's guest on Hilary Topper on Air. During the interview, I asked Scott some questions about Energy Return and Performance. Can you explain what made you question the conventional wisdom surrounding running shoes? You mentioned that the concept of energy return in running shoes, which many brands highlight as a key feature, is fundamentally flawed. Can you break down why this idea is scientifically incorrect? Most people believe that the energy return from shoes, thanks to materials like carbon plates and special foams, helps them run faster. Why do you say this is a misconception, and what is the real impact of these materials on performance? You've explained that the human body, with its multiple joints, doesn't behave like a rigid object. How does this biomechanical reality contradict the idea of energy return in shoes? If the energy from the shoe is balanced by the energy exerted by our muscles, leading to no net gain, why do so many people still feel like these shoes help them perform better? Could there be psychological factors at play? What are the potential risks for runners who rely on these supposed energy-returning shoes? How might they be inadvertently increasing stress on their muscles and tendons? You've designed a shoe technology that reduces the cumulative stress on muscles and tendons over time. Can you explain how your approach differs from traditional shoe designs, and what benefits runners can expect? With less cumulative stress from your shoe technology, how can runners expect this to impact their training and injury prevention in the long term? How do you see the future of running shoe design evolving now that we have a better understanding of these biomechanical realities? For runners who want to make informed decisions about their footwear, what advice would you give them to cut through the marketing noise and choose shoes that truly support their performance and health? And finally, Scott, how can our listeners get in touch with you or learn more about Vimazi? Get in Touch with Vimazi by going to http://www.Vimazi.com. In this episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, we learn all about hormones and how they affect our endurance. With our expert guest Kelsey Pontius, we discuss the relationship between hormones and running performance for both men and women. Hormones like cortisol, testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone play crucial roles in energy levels, muscle recovery, and overall endurance. Women experience hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle, affecting their performance and recovery, while men need to monitor testosterone levels influenced by stress and training. Nutritional adjustments are important for maintaining hormonal balance; women may need more iron and calcium at certain times, and men should ensure they get enough zinc and vitamin D. Long-distance running impacts hormone levels in both genders, so balanced training and recovery are essential. Managing stress through proper training, diet, and recovery is key to supporting hormonal health and optimizing performance for all runners. Most runners know that doing at least some strength training is beneficial but figuring out how to fit this into a training schedule can be difficult. On today's show, coach Andie joins us to cover the “how” and “why” of fitting strength work into your training schedule so you can get all of the performance benefits without feeling like you're compromising your runs. We get that most of you listening love to run and probably spend a lot of time getting in your easy runs and workouts. In S4Ep10 of the PRP, Adam gets educated by blossoming long distance runner, emerging entrepreneur and DPT extraordinaire, Eliana Lin who has been preparing for the Bayshore Half Marathon on Saturday May 25th, 2024. Austin Lin, former track aficionado, aspiring PhD candidate and Eliana's better half joins the show to offer his take on all things strength, business hustle and bananas. Rubber meets the road immediately in this unique sode as the PRP listenership is enlightened with the origin stories of Up & Running Performance, Ann Arbor's newest strength and physical therapy gym, owned and operated by both Eliana and Austin. Eliana discusses the intricacies of navigating the fine line between being both a healthcare provider and an entrepreneur and provides some amazing insight for athletes about how to traverse the early onset of potential injuries. Things get vulnerable when Eliana reflects on the reality she has been faced with - launching a new business venture while training for a race. Naturally, bandwidth for good, consistent training has been low as has been working tirelessly to build the early stages of a successful business brick by brick. Although she'd love to beat her half marathon time from Bayshore last year, Austin is quick to remind her that she's made the right decision to prioritize getting Up & Running Performance, well, up and running. A good reminder for us all about the seasons of life and that it's ok, and in fact healthy, to prioritize other passions and endeavors outside of the performance world from time to time. Marco Altini is a prominent figure in the fields of physiology, bioinformatics, and data science, renowned for his work in Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis and wearable technology. As the co-founder of HRV4Training, he pioneers tools for health monitoring and fitness optimization using data from wearable devices. Altini's research and contributions focus on utilizing HRV to assess cardiovascular health, stress levels, and fitness adaptation, making significant strides in merging physiology with technology for personalized health insights and performance enhancement.EPISODE OUTLINE:00:00 Introduction and Background19:19 The Importance of Resting Heart Rate28:27 HRV and Cardiovascular Fitness37:00 The Future of HRV Technology43:32 The Impact of Emotional States on PerformanceTAKEAWAYSHeart rate variability (HRV) is the variation between consecutive heartbeats and is an indirect way to measure how stress is impacting the autonomic nervous system.Resting heart rate and HRV are the most important parameters to track in HRV, and changes in these values can provide insights into stress levels and recovery.Absolute values of HRV are not as informative as relative changes over time, and it is important to understand an individual's normal range.Technology has made it easier to measure HRV, but it is important to use the data in the right context and not get too obsessed with numbers. The future of HRV technology may involve measuring other physiological markers, such as hormones, to gain a better understanding of stress and performance.Emotional states can impact an athlete's performance, and it is important to consider the mental and emotional aspects in addition to physiological data.TRANSCRIPT:https://share.transistor.fm/s/c38eae38/transcript.txtMORE FROM MARCO:Website: https://www.marcoaltini.com/App: https://www.hrv4training.com/ PODCAST INFO:Podcast Website: www.relaxedrunning.comApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast...Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2MMfLsQ...RSS: https://feeds.transistor.fm/relaxed-r...SOCIALS:- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/relaxedrunning- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/relaxed_run...

In this edition of RC spotlight we hear from Frederich Hayem (Fred), a relatively new runner who has achieved rapid success since taking up the sport just over a year ago. He is the perfect example of how good training and learning from your mistakes is the best way to improve as an athlete. He joined our coaching program with the goal of running his first marathon and crushed it, running a 3:29. Despite some injury and setbacks, he has taken several minutes off of his already impressive half marathon PR and as he moves into a new age group, he is only continuing to get faster. Fred attributes much of his success to consistent strength training and sticking to a plan without stressing about hitting mileage or paces exactly. To learn more about Fred's story and growth as an athlete we'll chat about topics including: How Fred used his background in strength training to help his running performance Why consistency is king when it comes to improvement in running What it means to be a “smart runner” Why you should avoid focusing on perfection if you want to get faster Fred's future goals, including some big races in 2024 A lot of runners strive to get better quickly but Fred shows that you don't need to rush the training process in order to see great results. This week's show brought to you by: MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races. Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%.
