Playwright Stef Smith is best known for her, well, plays. But her award-winning BBC Scotland drama, Float – a tender tangle of love, life and identity in small-town Scotland – is also well worth your time. Season one is already bingeable on the iPlayer and, ahead of season two hitting screens at the end of the month, our Mick chatted to Stef about water, women in love, representation, and the joys of being a soppy sausage. Talking of soppy sausages, Jen's quite rightly feeling emotional about what seeing sporting women means to girls getting into sporting. And has top-tier cynic Hannah Dunleavy gone and picked a romance for Rated or Dated? Well, that's up for discussion as we watch 2004's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Plus bullies, unfinished church business, time theory, not enough nurses, and the return of Nelson Mandela. PS: Scotland, we love you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
STOP PRESS: Hannah Dunleavy – yes, *our* Hannah Dunleavy – has only gone and picked a rom-com for Flicking. In the face of such a shocker, will Mick and Yosra even be capable of speech in order to share their thoughts on 1940's ‘comedy of remarriage' The Philadelphia Story, starring powerhouse trio Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant? Well, of course. Not least because there are some domestic violence LOLZ and attitudes towards women that don't quite cut the mustard in 2023. But what do they all have to say about the rest of the film and the glorious Hepburn? Find out. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. Joined by our very special guest Hannah Dunleavy off that Standard Issue podcast, we discuss, with many spoilers, season 4 of The Handmaid's Tale. We cover all the important topics such as: Can you actually have too much of looking
It's a Standard Issue x Freelance Pod crossover episode! I met up with Jen Offord, Mickey Noonan and Hannah Dunleavy at the Boulevard Theatre, Soho, to talk about our upcoming live shows there, how the internet has changed journalism, feminism and what their live recording has in store for the audience. Here's the Instagram album containing the picture we talk about in the cold open. It's definitely worth a look, especially if you love neon! You'll also hear a little bit from writer Gemma Milne, who's guesting on Freelance Pod's live show at the Boulevard on Sunday 17th November. Standard Issue Podcast is the result of live shows that the gang - including their boss and SI founder, Sarah Millican - used to put on to support the original online magazine. So the liveness started first - the podcast second. Mickey and Hannah are trained journalists with years of experience on newspapers and magazines between them, with a major highlight being Mickey having spent 9 months as a sexpert on a lads' mag. They've also both tried their hands at comedy in the past. Jen came to journalism from the civil service, and in truly early internet tradition, set up a themed blog that caught the imagination, and resulted in articles, TV appearances and a book deal. We recorded this episode on a landing at the Boulevard Theatre, in true Soho style, between a lift, a loo and a glass bridge by a neon tattooist sign. Cheers to the theatre's Emma Groome for sorting us out! Look out for Standard Issue's women in TV-themed live show at the Boulevard on Sunday 10th November. Podcaster, articulate drinker & whiskey fiend Hannah Dunleavy cheated on her 'Standard Issue' chums to help the Drunk Women solve a crime of epic proportions. At least, the size of the perpetrator was epic according to history, hence the name 'Big Bertha,’ who had a silver tongue when it came to getting people to buy whatever she was selling, regardless of whether it was hers to sell in the first place. Guest Hannah also tells a tale of her own in which she got to use some questionable self-defense tactics taught to her by her dad and this week's listener crime sets the team's sleuthing skills a-blaze!Let us know if you're 'Team Big Bertha' or not and please remember to review and recommend us! London Hughes + Jen Brister + Daisy May Cooper + our baffled hosts, Mickey Noonan and Hannah Dunleavy = an absolute balls-to-the-wall gigcast. Topics covered include getting a world record or four, shitting in the streets, the joy of mispronunciation, why hairy legs and litter don't get on and the potential delights of an on-call tuk-tuk. The world is full of brilliant broads and we've had loads of them onstage with us in 2018. And of course our Sarah Millican, Hannah Dunleavy and Mickey Noonan. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this gigcast, da boss Sarah Millican and our Hannah Dunleavy are In Conversation with Helen Thorn and Ellie Gibson, aka The Scummy Mummies, and Sally Phillips. Chat covers all the bases: how to stop your kids accessing porn, a rolling boulder of tits, Where's Teddy?, charity-shop Diana and the saddest Gangnam Style ever. This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at the Cheltenham Comedy Festival in September, 2018. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this gigcast, we got Hannah Dunleavy, Sarah Millican, Luisa Omielan, Janeane Garofalo and Su Pollard onstage to see what would happen. Crikey. There’s tit-covering trousers, a dearth of condoms, a blast of Madonna and a frankly hilarious bum story. We recorded this gigcast back in August in Edinburgh at The Stand Comedy Club as part of our Edinburgh Fringe run. It was even more deliciously bonkers than we expected. And we’re the people who decided to get Su Pollard and Janeane Garofalo in the same room. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
OMG! Episode 60! Hannah and Jen from Standard Issue (a podcast by women for women BOOM!) return for Hannah’s choice In Bruges. Where to start with In Bruges? It’s a 2008 film from Martin McDonagh starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two hitmen attempting to lay low in Bruges. What follows includes a batshit awesome performance from Ralph Finnes, a coke fueled racist rant from a dwarf actor and enclaves. It’s a comedy in case you were wondering. In the arc of Colin Farrell this is brilliant and hilarious, the chemistry between him and Gleeson is genuine and completely convincing. New comer to In Bruges Jen found it “well bleak” and not the “bantz-a-fucking-rama” she was led to believe - and rightly so. Definitely not up there for her like Bugsy Malone or Kindergarten Cop. It is bleak, spoilers there is a LOT of death but it is also really, really funny. Definitely an acquired taste is required and if you’re into it then you’ll be rewarded, if you’re not, maybe give it another try? Scores [supsystic-tables id='62']Generally, this film comes recommended with MASSIVE CAVEATS, it’s violent, it’s bloody, it’s very sweary, it’s pretty weird and it’s fucking bleak, so you have been warned. Overall Flixwatcher and guests award In Bruges 3.58 (so nearly a 4) - a second watch from Jen (with less sleeping) might have bumped it up to a 4, which was generally how Twitter felt too. What do you guys think? Have you seen In Bruges? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! Its Episode 46! We’re reviewing Creed with Jen and Hannah from Standard Issue! The 2015 sort of spin-off, sort of sequel sequel in the Rocky film series. Michael B. Jordan is the son of Apollo Creed and Sylvester (‘sentient piece of corn beef’) Stallone returns as Rocky. If you have a vague interest in the Rocky series and can get over the fact the main character is called ADONIS Creed then this film is for you. If you have no interest in the Rocky series, or boxing and think a main character called ADONIS Creed is ridiculous then step out of the ring! Scores [supsystic-tables id='48'] Creed scores a respectable score overall of 3.1, considering Helen’s low scoring. If you’re a fan of Rocky and boxing (or The Wire for that matter) you’ll enjoy this - if you don’t then probably don’t bother, unless you have a spare two hours and 13 minutes and no other plans, knock yourself out! What do you guys think? Have you seen Creed? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!
