Beyond the Page: The Best of the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference
In this episode, recorded live at the 2024 Writers Conference, I sit down with bestselling crime novelist and TV writer/producer DENNIS LEHANE for a lively, wide-ranging conversation about how he approaches writing books vs. television scripts, his advice for writing true crime stories, as well as his journey developing his two latest AppleTV limited series, Black Bird and the upcoming Firebug, both starring Taron Egerton. Lehane is that rare novelist who has found acclaim and a large audience both in fiction and on the screen. A handful of his novels have been made into excellent films – Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, and Shutter Island, to name a few – and in recent years he has become a much in-demand television creator and showrunner, a role that first began for him two decades ago, when he joined the now-famous Season 4 writers room on David Simon's iconic show The Wire. Into the Fire: Storytelling and Survival with Phil Donlon & Gabe Mann In this week's Team Never Quit podcast, Marcus and Melanie dive deep into the art of storytelling—both on stage and in the heat of real-life danger. Our guests are two visionary filmmakers with unique, gripping perspectives on their craft: Phil Donlon, award-winning actor, filmmaker, and theater veteran, and Gabe Mann, director and cinematographer of the groundbreaking wildfire documentary Hotshot. Phil Donlon takes us through his journey from the blue-collar streets of Chicago to the bright lights of Hollywood. A founding member of The Gilead Theater Company and a passionate storyteller, Donlon shares his experiences acting in renowned theater productions, signing with WME, and ultimately finding creative fulfillment by writing and directing his own films. His latest project, High & Outside: A Baseball Noir, is now streaming worldwide. On the other end of the spectrum, Gabe Mann puts us directly in the line of fire—literally. His documentary Hotshot is a heart-pounding, first-person account of elite wildfire fighters who battle the flames without water, capturing their raw courage with breathtaking cinematography. After six years running alongside these real-life heroes, Mann shares the intensity, sacrifice, and unexpected pull of wildfire that changed his life forever. From the front lines of nature's most destructive force, this episode is about the power of storytelling, survival, and the relentless pursuit of passion. Tune in for a conversation that will leave you inspired, shaken, and ready to chase your own fire. In this episode you will hear: • There's something about when you witness wildfire firsthand. It does something to you. The actual firefighters call it “The Firebug.” It taps into something primal in men. I caught it. (6:00) • Most of the photojournalists who actually do this right, are former firefighters. They actually have that certification. But for the most part, the kinds of people who are reporting for the Washington Post or The New York Times – they have no clue. (7:56) • I'm a storyteller. So however I'm doing it, whether I'm an actor, whether I'm producing something, writing it – I just want to tell good stories. (9:46) • We wanted to make a film that played like a narrative feature. (11:15) • They're so distracted with the climate change narrative, which really has nothing to do with wildfires. It's the accumulation of fuel. (12:08) • I'm the only dude in LA who's actually from LA. (12:37) • When you continue to put it on something that we don't have control over – like the weather – it's a completely disempowering narrative. (14:04) • A wildfire is composed of 3 things. It's called a fire triangle. You need all 3: Drought, Fuel, Ignition. (17:02) • People were crying over all these giant Redwoods and Sequoias that were getting burned down back in 2020. And nobody ever asked the very obvious question. These trees are 2,000 years old, but the fire cycle in that forest is once every 300 years – you get a purging wildfire – How did get to be 2,000 years old? What happened 2,000 years ago that made these trees so robust? (17:39) • There's some people who have this gene that compels them to serve their country. (25:32) • If we can get some people in Washington to see this film, I think we could help make change. (27:03) • We have agency over wildfire. We can be proactive. We could solve it tomorrow, if we know what we're supposed to do. If we look at what a hotshot crew does – literally all they do is get rid of plants. They're either cutting them or burning them. That's it. They don't use water. (28:05) • We started the film with a question. I think doing that gives people the opportunity to engage with the art in the appropriate way, which is – they answer the question. (47:34) • Our motto when we were making this film was “Show, don't tell.” (52:22) • This is what art is for. It is for explaining and getting people to feel the things that you cannot adequately convey with words. Audio introduction gives general background on "The Shadow" and introduces the track entitled "Firebug." For a recording that was made 85 years ago, it is well preserved. Goodrich Silvertown Tires is the sponsor, A set of 4 tires would have cost $56 in 1938, but that is a pretty significant amount considering the average annual salary was $1731. That amount of money...adjusting for inflation would now be $38,726.... an increase of 2,138.33%!. Those $56 tires would now cost a little over $1100.00. Never mind the tires... enjoy the show! This track will be in "The Shadow" playlist.

Today on Too Opinionated, good friend and returning guest author Walter Esselman drops in for a visit. Walter's new novel is called Bad Blood: A Wasper Encounter. A geeky tale inspired by the great film, “Aliens.” Deep in space, Mac leads a Team of Marines in their 60's that have been endlessly cloned to fight humanoid-insects called Waspers. Despite her fears, an orphan girl, Firebug, travels lightyears to be the Team's new medic, and secretly free them from enslavement. The second Firebug reaches the ship, she and the Team have to leave on a mission. Intel suggests that there is a King Wasper, which can call the Soldier Wasps to it. Despite casualties, they assist in capturing one. Back on their ship, Firebug is forced to tell Mac and the Team everything as they dodge Security. However, once the Waspers get the King loose, they'll need to scramble, just stay in one piece. And threaded throughout the monsters and geeky easter eggs, Firebug begins to see Mac as the grandfather she never had. So, join us for a heck of a ride. Head'em Up and Move'em Out! There's arguably no superhero in existence that has been reimagined, redefined, or reinterpreted more than Batman. No matter how many times he's been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City's greatest defender. With so much Bat content out there, there's plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank! This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman's history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters. Join host Daniel Cohen, Pop Break's former Film Editor and Resident Bat-Maven, as he brings on several guests every month to share his passion for the one and only Dark Knight. From Adam West to Robert Pattinson, no bat stone will be left unturned. Bottom-line: If you're a Batman fan, this is required listening. In what is definitely the biggest story in the world of Batman right now, you know we had to do an episode on the new Amazon series, Batman: Caped Crusader. Daniel is joined once again by Podcasting Director of the Pop Break, Alex Marcus, as the two sing the praises of this phenomenal addition to the Batman canon. SPOILERS ARE ON as the duo discuss all ten episodes. They dive heavily into all the reimagined villains, and both have a hot take on Harvey Dent/Two-Face. No villain stone is left unturned. Clayface. Catwoman. Penguin. Harley Quinn. Firebug? All are discussed. Daniel also criticizes one of the villains used, but then realizes he was talking about the wrong villain! That happened. Not only are the villains discussed, but they praise the use of all the supporting characters, including Barbara Gordon, Renee Montoya, and…Pennyworth? Hear Daniel and Alex argue about the episode where there's a ghost! One is positive. One is negative. You'll have to listen to find out who's on which side! They also discuss favorite scenes, favorite Batman moments, top episodes, and Daniel gets annoyed at a certain cameo tease at the end. Also, months after Daniel's passionate defense and thesis about Harvey Bullock being a complex character with tons of potential in a previous podcast, Alex tries to poke the bear on Bullock's different type of role in this series...Daniel does turn the tables though when a certain Robin is conveniently left out in one particular episode…If you loved this show like most Batman fans did, this is a must listen to episode! Also…we tease a BIG rankings episode for next month!

The Shadow is a collection of serialized dramas originating in 1930s pulp novels and later expanding to various media. The titular character has been featured in radio dramas, pulp magazines, comic books, television, serials, video games, and films. Initially created as a radio show narrator, The Shadow was developed into a literary character by Walter B. Gibson in 1931. The radio drama, featuring Orson Welles, premiered in 1937. The Shadow character was depicted as having the power to manipulate men's minds, making them unable to see him. The radio program's iconic introduction, voiced by Frank Readick, and accompanied by a musical theme, has become a part of American idiom. Each episode concluded with a reminder that crime does not pay and The Shadow knows. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

Today, my guest is fellow FIRE enthusiast/podcaster/blogger, Captain FI!He's actually been on the podcast before but I had to take that episode down due to ASIC's 2022 guidelines.Cap came and stayed at the Firebug household after attending the Rask event in my hometown. It was a lot of fun meeting and greeting others from the FIRE community and it was extra special to do so in my own backyard. This was very much an improv podcast and I didn't have any set questions. We had a general chitchat about Captian Fi's financial journey and other topics relating to FIRE.Some of the topics we cover in today's episode are:Who is Captain FI? ❓️ What did you think of this episode?
I've been thinking about this post for the past 18 months, and to be honest, it's long overdue. So much has changed over the last 11 years since I first stumbled across FIRE.And if the podcast's feature image wasn't obvious enough, I recently became a father. So, now is the perfect time for a big update/recap on life at the Firebug household.www.aussiefirebug.com/podcast

Arwen Lewis welcomes the incredible rock band FireBug! FireBug blends the 60's Woodstock era, Delta Blues, New Orleans, and Desert Noir—brilliant and timeless songs, adorned with lysergic vibes. They have shared the stage with Iggy Pop, The Cult, Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Donovan, Dave Catching (Queens Of The Stone Age), and many other known acts. Their signature sound blends 60's Woodstock era vibes with a New Orleans influence mixed with modern folk and blues. Joshua Tree recording artist FireBug has captivated audiences at music venues and festivals across the globe. Performances include appearances at SXSW, CMJ, Firelight Festival, French Quarter Festival, and many others. In Europe, FireBug toured the UK with a memorable performance at the sold-out Sonisphere Festival Knebworth and at famous venues including London's Dublin Castle and The Halfmoon. The latest full-length release "No Return" has been getting a lot of attention with its original take on a classic sound: "Creating something “new” in rock is becoming more and more difficult, however, what they've accomplished here is nothing short of impressive in every definition of the word. What can we say about Dennis Lehane..? He's written some of the best novels of all time which people like Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese have seized upon for the big screen. Think MYSTIC RIVER or SHUTTER ISLAND. He was a staff writer on The Wire. He's now a major show runner for Apple TV+ with the likes of Blackbird and the upcoming Firebug, both starring Taron Egerton. Dennis is back with his fourteenth novel SMALL MERCIES - and it's easily Phil's book of 2023. It's set amidst the School Bussing Riots in Boston of 1974 and tells the story of a hard as nails woman called Mary Pat Hennessy who's trying to find out why her daughter hasn't returned home, the same night that a black teenager is murdered in a racially motivated attack. This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the 21st century's best story tellers talk about how he does his job; why he can't stand ego on Set and how this book poured out of him whilst he was having a nightmare shooting Blackbird...! Victor Rice studied music at Manhattan School of Music intending to be a New York City session bass player. That is until he got talked into joining The Scofflaws in 1988. From that point forward, he became immersed in the world of ska. In fact, after doing a fantastic job producing The Scofflaws' first album, Bucket started hiring him to produce Moon Ska albums. He produced Skavoovie and The Epitones' Ripe, The Pietasters' Oolooloo, The Slackers' Better Late Than Never and The Adjusters' Before The Revolution. Today we speak to Victor Rice about his time in The Scofflaws, producing Moon Ska albums, and playing bass in the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. But we also cover his time at King Django's studio Version City, where he and Agent Jay (The Slackers), worked on many a brilliant album like Rocker T's Nicer By The Hour. And we also devote some time to talking about dub techniques and dub history, as Victor has become a master of the genre. His dub name is Strikkly Vikkly. We also talk about Victor's TWO Latin Grammys, some of his work with The Skatalites, what it's like to stay at European squat houses, why he moved to Brazil in 2002, and what it was like to do a dub remix of Hepcat's From Outta Nowhere album. We also talk about Victor's four solo albums: At Version City (1999), In America (2003), Smoke (2017), and Drink (2020)The Proffitt PodcastThe podcast that shows you tips & strategies to create content with confidence!Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Support the show
