Faith based comedy is growing in popularity. Why is religion such a good source for jokes? Is God funny? And, is there anywhere with religion that you just don't go? Dillon Mapletoft, the writer and creator of hit comedy Everyone Else Burns, explains his fundamentalist Christian upbringing and the influence it had on him writing the coming-of-age sitcom about a Manchester family who are part of a puritanical Christian sect and doomsday cult.To explore Giles Fraser is joined by Shazia Mirza, comedian and part of a female only Halal comedy tour, Shanny Luft, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Winconsin, and Ashley Blaker, a Jewish comedian and writer once described as "the UK's only Orthodox comedian".Producer: Alexa Good Assistant Producer: Linda Walker Editor: Tim Pemberton
Haiti has been ravaged by political instability and gang violence since the assassination of the country's president in 2021 – and this year it's spiralled with armed gangs in control of much of the capital Port-au-Prince. A group of women who believe this is discriminatory are challenging the law. Kylie speaks to Linde Bryk, head of strategic court cases at women's rights organisation Bureau Clara Wichmann, and Maartje Passchier who has been affected by the law change. From Bhutan to The Bahamas and Iceland to Indonesia, mass tourism has grown at an unprecedented rate over the last few decades. Today's top destinations are struggling with the sheer numbers of visitors and the United Nations has called for a total rethink on how the industry operates. The origins of travel for pleasure go back centuries and package holidays in the 1960s made it accessible to many in the West but it's only the combination of cheap flights and the advent of the internet that has led to truly global tourism on a mass scale. Whilst the industry now generates huge income for many companies and individuals around the globe, critics point to the cost to both the environment and humankind. Drawing on listeners' questions and comments, Rajan Datar examines the way mass tourism has impacted people's lives, both positively and negatively, and asks if the enforced pause in tourism caused by Covid was utilised as an opportunity for a re-think. He is joined by Sihle Khumalo, a popular South African travel writer; Shazia Mirza, a renowned British comedienne and writer; Qupanuk Olsen, originally a mining engineer but now Greenland's leading travel influencer; Prof. Noel Salazar, anthropologist of tourism from KU Leuven in Belgium; Iñigo Sánchez-Fuarros, senior researcher at the Institute of Heritage Sciences of the Spanish National Research Council and Dr. Birgit Trauer, tourism consultant and educator from Australia. In the first of two special episodes celebrating the 40th anniversary of Downstairs at The Kings Head comedy club, I talk to the wonderful owner of the club, PETER GRAHAME about his comedy career. Downstairs at the Kings Head is one of the oldest comedy clubs in Britain. Founded in 1981 by Grahame and Huw Thomas (who became the regular compere until his retirement), the intimate venue has never moved from the Kings Head pub, Crouch End in North London. The 40th Anniversary gig which I attended took place in April 2023 (rescheduled after two years because of the pandemic). With a bill featuring Al Murray, Phil Nichol, Nick Helm, Arthur Smith, Miles Jupp, Ria Lina, Laura Smyth, Shazia Mirza and back for one night only compere, Thomas, the anniversary night was filled with laughter and nostalgia. Walking into the club that evening, just as I had done for the first time thirty years ago, brought back many happy memories, including watching Harry Hill and Jeff Green both playing one of their earliest gigs there. It was a pleasure chatting to the co-founder and promoter of this iconic comedy club. Thank you so much for listening to my podcast, if you like what you hear, please subscribe and I hope you enjoy the interview. As an internationally acclaimed comedian that previously taught science to one of the UK's most influential grime stars, it's fair today to say that Shazia Mirza has had a fairly wondrous career. On today's episode, she treats Clive and our live audience to some fascinating stories, including her star appearance in the local paper at the age of 14 when she met Boy George in a nightclub and a bold but ultimately failed attempt to become a pop star. This episode was recorded live at the Edinburgh Fringe, August 2022.**If you enjoyed listening to this podcast, please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen. Throughout history attempts have been made to silence and ignore women. They’ve had to fight for a place in politics, had to use male pseudonyms to get published and often find themselves subjected to trolling and abuse when they speak out. So in this episode, curator Polly Russell and co-host comedian and writer Sara Pascoe are hearing from some women who stand on stage and command attention. They’re having a laugh with broadcaster and writer Sandi Toksvig and stand-up comedian Shazia Mirza as they explore how the comedy scene has changed over time and what still needs to be done. Strap yourselves in for some very funny conversations and unexpected revelations… Unfinished Business podcast series is generously supported by Joanna and Graham Barker and The Eccles Centre for American Studies. "I feel pressure to produce perfect chapattis despite being a successful comedian!" I speak with Shazia Mirza, a famous comedian and writer, appearing on Jonathan Ross, Celebrity Island with Bear Gryls, Celebs in Solitary & many more shows. Rufus Hound returns for another series of honest, intimate and hilarious interviews, with famous guests reading from their genuine teenage diaries. Guests this series are Woman's Hour host Dame Jenni Murray, former Goodie Bill Oddie, comedian Shazia Mirza, impressionist Jan Ravens, podcaster Olly Mann and writer Julie Myerson. In this first episode of new series, Rufus talks to the comedian Shazia Mirza about her experiences growing up in a strict Muslim family in the UK. In her teenage diaries, the young Shazia Mirza describes arguing with her parents, getting a Saturday job in McDonalds, bumping into a Rick Astley lookalike in a pub and dreaming about becoming a grand slam tennis ace. Producer: Harriet Jaine A Talkback production for BBC Radio 4
"If we are to survive as a human race we have to hide our hatreds, we have to find things we have in common if we want to progress and move forward." I first met Shazia Mirza in 2002 when I had my late night talk show in Amsterdam when we did shows around The Netherlands together. I was riding high with the dream TV job and Shazia was a cultural juggernaut at the time because she was playing a pro terrorism Muslim character on stage with her one liners and was getting a lot of media coverage at the time. When we met on this tour Shazia had a reporter from the Guardian following her and writing a story about her. It was a very exciting time for both of us in our careers and even though we are both from very different cultures we bonded because we are in the same tribe of stand up comedy. "The Jews have a great history of producing comedians, so do the Catholics, we have never had a history of comedians. Islam is a new religion and so is our comedy and satire. It takes time before you can laugh at something." "You have to have life experience to be a comedian and instagram is not a life experience. You can't not die, suffer and struggle and be a great comic." It is a privilege to be in this business and creativity is the key to happiness. Last year Shazia was on a reality TV show on the BBC called Survival Island, for one month she had to survive with people from different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities and she had a major revelation from the experience. "What we needed to do to survive was to keep our hatreds to ourselves. You can survive on your own for a while but in the end you need other people to survive. It made me see that if we are to survive as a human race we have to find things we have in common and hide our hatreds if we are to progress and move forward." "Spending time with people you don't like is a waste of life. You can only judge people by two ways... some people give you energy and other people drain you of your energy. Avoid the people who suck the joy out of life." Brilliant insights and sentences like "Starving to death on a desert island is a once in a lifetime experience." is why it is my pleasure to present to you now the one and only Shazia Mirza! patreon.com/tomrhodesradiosmartcamp
Brian Cox and Robin Ince are joined on stage by comedian Shazia Mirza, science writer and cancer researcher Dr David Robert Grimes and psychologist Prof Karen Douglas to look at the weird world of conspiracy theories. From Flat Earth believers to people who refuse to accept that humans have ever been to the moon, why is fiction often so much easier to believe than fact - and does it matter? They discuss the psychology and profile of people who are more likely to believe in conspiracies and the devastating effect some, like the anti-vaccine movement, have had on public health. They ask whether being irrational is our default setting and how to convince the most hard-core believers with the power of evidence and critical thinking. Although they would say that wouldnt' they? Producer: Alexandra Feachem
Clive Anderson and Arthur Smith are joined by Petula Clark, Rick Stein, Jayde Adams and Shazia Mirza for an eclectic mix of conversation, music and comedy. With music from Angus Munro and Chris Holland & Siobhan Parr. Producer: Sukey Firth
Shazia Mirza was born in Birmingham, England—the eldest daughter of Muslim parents who moved from Pakistan to Birmingham in the 1960s. About a year into her comedy career, after the September 11, 2001 attacks, Mirza performed a routine which began "My name is Shazia Mirza. At least, that's what it says on my pilot's licence". The routine was widely commented upon, and she was profiled as a ground breaking comedian on CBS's 60 Minutes. Shazia has been a columnist for The Guardian since 2008. Her show 'The Kardashians Made Me Do It' premiered at Kilburn's Tricycle Theatre and went on to sell out runs at London's Soho Theatre. The show was a satire on offence and political correctness and was critically well received. It also toured for 103 performances in Europe. Her comedy is said to push barriers and as a comedian she is often referred to as 'brave'. I talked to her straight after she had been to meet members of The Royal Family.
Shazia Mirza is a hilarious British Asian stand-up comedian. Her personal, honest and unapologetic humour makes her one of the funniest women in the UK.

She recently survived a month living wild in Bear Gryll's Celebrity Island (C4) - which, she says, was no laughing matter. Comedian Shazia Mirza is a regular face on TV in the UK - appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show (ITV), Graham Norton (BBC), Top Gear (BBC), Loose Women (ITV), The Late Late Show (RTE), and she is a regular panelist on The Wright Stuff (Channel 5). However, growing up in Birmingham with strict Pakistani parents nearly saw Shazia's career take a different turn. Her family hoped she'd be a doctor or a lawyer - and she reluctantly got a degree in biochemistry and became a science teacher. But her dream of being on stage led her to take comedy-writing classes at night and she began performing at small clubs around London. A few weeks after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, she got on stage wearing her hijab, and started off her act: “My name is Shazia Mirza… at least that’s what it says on my pilot’s licence...” After that night, Mirza’s comedy career took off. She was profiled on "60 Minutes," was a semifinalist on Last Comic Standing and started performing to packed audiences all over the world. In the latest Brits In The Wood episode, Shazia chats exclusively to Caroline Feraday and Claire Bullivant...

Shazia Mirza doesn't tend to stay in one place for very long. The award-winning stand-up comic, originally from Birmingham, England, has toured Britain, the United States, Canada, Pakistan, the United Arab Emerits, India, and all over Europe. Coming from a Muslim immigrant family in Britain, Shazia wasn't expected to end up in a career in comedy -- and in fact, she was a science teacher before she got behind the mic for the first time. However, over the last decade and a half, she's shown that comedy is definitely her true calling. Paul Little got the chance to speak to Shazia over the phone from her home in London just before she jetted off for some shows in India, one night back in the UK, and then her dates in Canada at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. They chatted about her unlikely start in comedy, her growth as a comedian and writer, her past experiences in Winnipeg, and the peculiarity of good comedy writing not always equating to the most laughter.
