This special bonus episode was recorded on Saturday 6 July, just two days after the general election. We got to interview Jess Phillips MP in front of a live audience at the Birmingham MAC, and she was brilliant. We covered loads of topics including Jess's work in the areas of women's rights and domestic violence, what she wants the new Labour government to prioritise, and what she thinks of Starmer's cabinet appointments. We also talk about the abuse suffered by Jess and her staff in the run-up to the election, and why she thinks it was the worst campaign she's ever been involved in. Plus: fancying Stanley Tucci, why becoming an MP is like joining the NCT, and parliamentary hairdressers - do Tories have better hair? After all that we had some questions from the audience that were so brilliant we ran out of time (forgot) to do the Scummy Mummy Confessions. But if that's your favourite bit of the show, have no fear - we have something special coming soon. Make sure you're subscribed to the podcast so you don't miss out. With guest speakers Hannah Phillips and Jess Phillips MP. Polarised and vitriolic debates are a problem for democracy, yet increasingly politicians and public officials are having to deal with intimidation and abuse – sometimes with tragic consequences. This is particularly an issue for women and those from minority backgrounds. With a general election looming in the UK, the tone of political debate, both online and in-person, is already steeped in anger. Yet, as the recently published findings of the Jo Cox Foundation's Civility Commission highlight, a more inclusive, fairer, and kinder public space is possible. To explore how we have reached a point of toxic politics, and how we can move beyond it, Cumberland Lodge is pleased to host a conversation with Hannah Phillips, Consultant with the Jo Cox Foundation, who has led on the work of the Civility Commission, and Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, who has been on the receiving end of much abuse in her political career.

The Labour Party has been out of power for over a decade. And after a historic electoral defeat in the 2019 general election, the party looks to be in real trouble. Sir Keir Starmer became leader in April 2020 replacing self described socialist Jeremy Corbyn and tried to steer the party towards a less radical, more outwardly patriotic brand of politics than his predecessor. But the loss of the Hartlepool by-election as well as many other local elections across the country has led some to believe that Labour's decline is terminal. And the Party has lost touch with its base outside a 'woke' London elite. But are the Labour bashers declaring victory too soon? The Conservative Party may be ahead in the polls, but they are still benefiting from excitement around Brexit and a successful vaccine campaign, things which will inevitably wane as the pandemic eases and economic realities start to bite. And let's not forget that demographics are in Labour's favour. Most 18 to 24-year-olds supported Labour in the last general election. Over time, this cohort of university-educated, progressively minded renters will expand. The task may not be easy, but if Labour can articulate a forward looking vision for the United Kingdom, surely it can win again? In her frank and funny talk for 5x15, Jess Phillips MP discusses her new book Everything You Really Need to Know About Politics with Rosie Boycott and lifts the lid on what a career in politics is really like and why it matters – to all of us. From agonizing decisions on foreign air strikes to making headlines about orgasms, from sitting in on history-making moments at the UN to eating McCain's potato smiles at a black-tie banquet in China, the life of a politician is never dull. And it's also never been more important. But politics is far bigger than Westminster, and in her new book and in this event, Jess Phillips makes the compelling case for why now, more than ever, we all need to be a part of it. Taking us from the sublime to the ridiculous, Jess gives us a look at the inner workings of politics and the rules governing us all that are often a mystery to an outsider. She covers it all in her own inimitable style giving us the inside track on party politics, changing laws, standing for election, constituency work, the press, social media, and everything in between – this is what is really going on in British politics. Phillips also outlines the themes from her new book "Everything You Really Need to Know About Politics" including getting more women into parliament. George Magnus, associate at Oxford University's China Centre, joins to discuss the changing relations between China and the West, and how China is likely to respond to greater isolation. Stephen Sackur speaks to one of the leading figures in the British Labour party, Jess Phillips MP. She's a tireless campaigner against domestic violence and has won plaudits for her direct, from-the-heart style of politics. Across continents and cultures there is one common - and corrosive - political phenomenon; rising anger and alienation amongst voters who feel neglected and ignored by the system. Is there a way out of today's polarised politics?

She talks to Sarah about the challenges she's faced along the way, and about the many "names written in invisible ink" throughout the bill.Jess also talks about how lockdown may have made many of us rethink our attitudes towards domestic abuse and safety. It forced many to reflect:  what if I wasn't safe in my own home? What if I was forced to stay in a place where I was at constant risk of abuse?Though there are no doubt some areas where the new bill falls short, Jess talks about the power of data in telling untold stories and in holding the government to account.

When she’s not standing up in the House of Commons, calling out the prime minister for playing “bully-boy games” during Brexit votes, she’s shedding light on the reality of being a woman in politics. That reality is pretty terrifying. She receives death and rape threats every day of her life. And one night received 600 rape threats in one night. She has panic alarms installed in her home and office. On 16 June 2016, Phillips’s friend, the MP Jo Cox, was assassinated by a far-right terrorist in her constituency. We spoke to Phillips about Jo Cox, and how she should be remembered. In this episode, Phillips talks about her admiration for Annie Kenney, the working-class suffragette and socialist feminist. She also discusses the lessons we can learn from Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Maltese journalist and anti-corruption activist who was murdered in October 2017. Fearne Cotton blazed the trail for podcasts like mine. When she launched Happy Place in March 2018, it went straight to the top of the iTunes chart and has seemingly stayed there ever since. It has done so much to bring discussions about mental health into the mainstream, partly because Fearne has also been honest about her own experiences with panic attacks and anxiety. So when I started How To Fail in July 2018, I always knew Fearne would be top of my list of dream guests. A few months later, we ended up sitting next to each other at the British Podcast Awards (spoiler alert: neither of us won but embarrassingly, we both presented awards to other winners) and having a good old natter, and then I was sent to interview her for a magazine and we got on so well that we hatched the idea of doing each other's podcasts now HERE WE ARE. What makes Fearne so special is not just her impressive broadcasting career as a TV and radio presenter, or her bestselling books or the fact that she turned Happy Place into a full-blown festival, complete with yoga workshops and inspiring talks. No, it's that she is unafraid to be honest. She believes, as I do, that true strength comes from true vulnerability, and it's these qualities that make her a phenomenal guest. Fearne joins me to talk about failing most of her GCSEs, a failed engagement and, in one of the most powerful passages of any interview I've ever had the privilege of doing, about her failure to be herself in her 20s and how she lived with an eating disorder for years. This is the first time she has ever spoken about it, and I am so truly grateful that Fearne felt this was a safe enough space to bare her beautiful soul. Thank you, Fearne. For 15 years, George Alagiah has been a familiar face on our television screens as the presenter of the BBC's Six O'Clock News. Before that, he was one of the corporation's most respected foreign correspondents. Before that, he was born in what was then Ceylon, the only boy in a family of four sisters, and was sent to boarding school in England at the age of 12. George joins me to talk about his self-perceived failures at fatherhood, the challenges of reporting from the front-line in times of humanitarian crisis, his nuanced relationship with racial identity and how he dealt with racist incidents in his youth. He also talks movingly about his bowel cancer diagnosis in 2014, which has seen him undergo over 40 rounds of chemotherapy and make his peace with death. What struck me most about George was his elegance: in person, but also in expression. He has no anger or bitterness or stored-up resentment, and this to me is the definition of a quiet sort of heroism. (Obviously I also asked him about BBC equal pay and if he'd watched Anchorman.) I loved this interview. It moved me and made me think. I hope it does the same to you.   * The How To Fail Live tour is almost over. SNIFF!
