In this edition of Very Nearly an Armful, James. Jon, Tim and Martin look at the earliest surviving television episode of Hancock's Half Hour, The Alpine Holiday, from Series 2. The team look at the amazing supporting cast, including Richard Wattis in his only Hancock's Half Hour role, John Vere, June Whitfield and, or course, Kenneth Williams in his only surviving televised appearance as Snide. They also consider how different this episode is without Sid James. The four examine the technicalities of how the show was recorded, consider how easily Hancock switches from pomposity to sheer panic in a matter of seconds and debate, in detail, which of the gang is most suited to enter the yodelling championship of East Dulwich. The team, of course, gets distracted, this time by the recent Punch and Judy Festival in Bournemouth and by the guest appearance of Diane Morgan at the Society's annual dinner.Don't forget to rate and subscribe to the podcast. And, if you haven't done so already, why not join the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society - full details of how to join are at www. tonyhancock.org.uk We have an event planned to celebrate what would have Hancock's 100th birthday in May 2024 and our annual reunion dinner in September; we'd love to welcome you as a member and see you at our events. Ann Handley is the Chief Content Officer at MarketingProfs and the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Everybody Writes. Recently, she embarked on a “down-to-the-studs” second edition of the book—revised, expanded, and 10% funnier. We talk about all of this—including why she didn't want to promise more than 10% funny—this week on the On Brand podcast. About Ann Handley Ann Handley is a Wall Street Journal bestselling author who speaks worldwide about how businesses can escape marketing mediocrity to ignite tangible results. IBM named her one of the seven people shaping modern marketing. Ann is a digital marketing pioneer and the Chief Content Officer of MarketingProfs, the leading marketing training company with more than 600,000 subscribers. She is the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content, and co-author of Content Rules: How to Create Killer Blogs, Podcasts, Videos, Ebooks, Webinars (and More) That Engage Customers and Ignite Your Business. Her books have been translated into 19 languages, including Turkish, Korean, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese. A LinkedIn Influencer, she has more than 420,000 followers on Twitter and is consistently named one of the more influential marketers on social media. She has contributed commentary and bylines to Entrepreneur magazine, IBM's Think Marketing, Inc. magazine, Mashable, Huffington Post, American Express, NPR, and the Wall Street Journal. Ann lives in Boston, where she is Mom to creatures two- and four-legged. She is an E.B. White Superfan, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel enthusiast, and a novice tap dancer. She escapes it all by retreating to her tiny-house office, which houses her vintage typewriter collection. Episode Highlights “Mediocrity has always been there,” Ann began as I asked about her focus on helping marketers escape a world of content mediocrity. However, she was quick to note that she never wants to make people feel bad—especially about their writing. What someone really means when they say ‘I'm terrible at writing.' We have a lot of baggage with writing. “When someone says ‘I'm terrible at writing what they usually mean is ‘I'm terrible at grammar.'” But that's just one piece of writing. And anyone can write. Or, perhaps a better way to say it is, everybody writes … “A fun romp through writing.” Recently, the second edition of Ann's bestseller Everybody Writes came out. New revised, and 10% funnier. Why just 10%? She explained that she didn't want to overpromise on the funny. The sunroom of brand voice. The BFG podcast has returned to stun and amaze you with our breadth of pop-culture knowledge. Host Neal Pollack, the editor of BFG, welcomes Stephen Garrett, as usual, to talk about 'Magic Mike's Last Dance.' Stephen thought the movie was corny and slight but found its love letter to midlife romance charming. Neal thought it was flat stupid and was annoyed that the script didn't give the backup dancers more to do. Your mileage may vary depending on whether or not you attend a "Rowdy Screening."Rachel Llewellyn stops in to chat about 'Poker Face,' the Natasha Lyonne murder-mystery vehicle from creator Rian Johnson. Lyonne wanders about the Mountain West, encountering murder and mayhem. Some people are comparing this to 'Columbo,' some are not. Regardless, Rachel is totally hooked by this story of a woman who knows when you are lying.Neal's pick of the week is 'Cunk on Earth," starring Diane Morgan as Philomena Cunk, the most blissfully clueless history-show host you'll even encounter. Most of this segment involves Neal telling his favorite jokes from the show, so let's not spoiler the spoilers. Just listen to the BFG podcast and be the best-informed pop-culture enthusiast in your pod.Enjoy the show!

Some Things, Some Places, At Certain Times

One of my most anticipated shows, perhaps an unexpected one in the form of an educational series. Diane Morgan is Philomena Cunk, a hilarious host that asks all the right and wrong questions on how to learn about the history of Earth and entertain the audience while doing it

What a mix we have this week - a(nother) mockumentary, an unnecessary sequel, a fictional biopic, and an example of incredible drama from a sci-fi franchise. This week it's a surprise grab bag of television, with no guarantees you'll like any of it. Each show comes with its own baggage that will either form your attraction or be the reason you aren't interested...but for me, each show has something to offer everyone. Shows covered in this episode: Cunk on Earth season one (5 eps), starring Diane Morgan, produced by Charlie Brooker - available in full now on Netflix. Party Down season three (6 eps), starring Ken Marino, Adam Scott, Jane Lynch, Megan Mullally, Martin Starr, and Ryan Hansen - S01/S02 available in full now; S03 drops weekly starting Friday 24 February on Stan. Last King of the Cross (10 eps), starring Lincoln Younes, Tim Roth, Callan Mulvey, Claude Jabbour, Tess Haubrich, and Matt Nable - first two eps available now, the remainder dropping weekly on Paramount+. *BEST OF 2022* | Star Wars: Andor season one (12 eps), starring Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgaard, Genevieve O'Reilly, and Fiona Shaw - S01 available in full now; S02/final season coming in 2024 on Disney+. The season of love is upon us! But you don't want to screw up that special retro date you have planned. This week share what absolutely NOT to do as you're planning a retro-themed evening for that special someone. Come with Jovial Jay and Shua to the Casbah on a Valentines Enjoy Stuff!   Don't leave love to chance. Let us tell you what to avoid on that special retro-themed Valentine's Day date.    News Snoop Dogg and Master P are teaming up with Post for a new cereal Speaking of cereal: Magic Spoon Cereal will be coming to grocery stores Melinda Dillon, actress from Close Encounters and Christmas Story, passes away  Bandai reveals the Grogu Tamagotchi but Shua will still not let them in his classroom Mark Hamill is selling some of his cool Star Wars things to raise money for Ukraine   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay found some very cool and inspirational Australian movies. Seriously Red and The Pretty One are fun and entertaining, but also have great messages on self-image. Definitely worth checking out. Shua watched a recent Netflix series from Britain called Cunk on Earth. A very condensed (and ridiculous) history of our planet starring Diane Morgan giving her unique take on this hunk of rock we live on.    Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout The Thirteenth Floor was a less well known sci-fi virtual reality flick than The Matrix, but there are some great aspects to it as well. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, stay tuned for one of the greatest animated stories of all time, The Iron Giant, coming this Saturday.    Enjoy Life! One way to make Valentine's Day special for that someone you love is to plan a retro-movie-themed date. Last year we had some fun nights planned that surely led to life-long relationships. This year's episode is more of a cautionary tale. We give you some great themes, with some warnings of what you should absolutely avoid (unless you're trying to get rid of them)    Themes include: “The Sixteen Candles” “The Back to the Future” “The Breakfast Club” “The Brendan Fraser” “The Die Hard” “The Splash” “The Arnold Schwarzenegger”   Have you made these mistakes on dates? What other things should we all avoid? Did you read all of these shownotes? Diane Morgan is a Mindset and Grief Recovery Coach and Hypnotist. She provides both online and 1-to-1 in- person Grief Recovery support services. I have had many years of experience helping people while working in the healing arts field.  Over the years I recognized that on a daily basis, most of my clients shared their stories of loss. It was after completing the Grief Recovery Program I realized that many of them didn't have the tools or relief I experienced after the completion of the program. I also came to realize that after many personal losses of my own, I had been carrying around so much unresolved grief. After experiencing the loss of three miscarriages, moving to another country, losing numerous beloved pets, and finally all within eight months of each other I lost my dad, mum and my brother.  Even though I have a loving family, I felt lost alone and overwhelmed. I buried my grief because I told myself “I had to stay strong for my children.”  It was only after doing the Grief Recovery Program that I was able to shine a light at my darkest feelings of grief, I was able to release those heavy emotions that I had carried with me for many years. It is my honor to help individuals process their loss and find freedom from their grief. So that they can love themselves, feel confident, and make room for joy and purpose to come back into their lives. Today’s creature feature is about a diamond in the ruff.  Hear a story about a dog named Duque, a mutt that was worth 15,000 dollars, at least while the diamond ring he had swallowed, was inside of his stomach. Are you allergic to cats? Or you may not be, but one of your family members is? Wish you could have a cat or already do and suffer the consequences of your allergic reactions? Cat allergies can seem like a really hopeless problem.  My guest today, Diane Morgan is the author of “The Sneeze-Free Cat Owner: Allergy Management & Breed Selection for the Allergic Cat Lover” and her suggestions for how to treat your allergy, and changes you can make in the home will give you hope and help you realize there is much more you can do to lessen or eliminate symptoms than you might have known about. Cats and cat allergies can co-exist. Have you ever wondered where the term “kitty corner” comes from? It describes something that is diagonal to or from us, but why do we say this? What does it have to do with cats? Absolutely nothing, actually. Curious?  I’ll explain in this episode. If you’re enjoying this podcast please let your friends and family know. Comedian and actor Diane Morgan chooses the life of Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding. Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding is best known for his role in the Battle of Britain. He is widely regarded as the architect of Britain's unlikely victory, using an intelligence strategy known as the Dowding System. The Battle of Britain was at the very end of his military career - his nickname by then was "Stuffy" Dowding - and shortly after he was side-lined. But he cared deeply for every one of his pilots, and following his retirement he became focused on what had happened to all his "dear fighter boys" lost in the war. He wrote extensively on the after life and spiritualism - many bereaved families wrote to him seeking answers as a result. He met his second wife after a medium suggested he take her out for lunch having received a communication from her late first husband from beyond the grave. Together they were prominent advocates of spiritualism, and of animal rights, with Dowding giving his maiden speech in the Lords about the need for ethical standards in slaughterhouses. Diane picked up Dowding's book by pure chance through her local book shop during the first lockdown, and has since become fascinated by the life of this man. Together with Dowding's stepson, David Whiting, and historian Victoria Taylor, Diane discusses Dowding's legacy. Is there a paradox between this great military figure's career, and subsequent fascination with spiritualism and ethics - or does it all make perfect sense? In her book The Taming of the Queen, Philippa Gregory asks a simple question of her subject, Katherine Parr. Who would marry a serial killer? Katherine Parr has been largely overlooked because she survived the monstrous Henry VIII, but she was a remarkable woman. She married four times, wrote books and successfully navigated the choppy waters of Henry's reign. In popular culture she's written off as matronly or nurselike. In fact she was younger than Anne Boleyn when she married the king, and died tragically in childbirth the year after he expired. She also may have inspired Elizabeth I. Philippa Gregory is the author of the Taming of the Queen and the Other Boleyn Girl. Suzannah Lipscomb is the author of The King is Dead: The Last Will and Testament of Henry VIII. First off a warning to anyone who has one of those Coca Cola embossed glasses in their cabinets.....I decided to have a Bacardi and Coke so I took the glass out and dropped a few cubes of ice in it...as the ice touched the glass it exploded....not cracked...literally exploded with bits flying all over the room.....the glass is the type which holds a pint and is quite thick with "Coca Cola" embossed on the outside....if anyone has one or a similar one...throw it in the bin. 2.I watched a very interesting programme on American "fibs".....which looked into the wonderful heroic events in their history and revealed what ACTUALLY happened.....examples of the many items was Paul Revere who supposedly rode across the country on his own and warned everyone of the approaching British.....there is even a huge statue of him ....however ...there was three of them and poor old Paul didn't make it to the end (fell off his horse I think)....and legend also has it that when the British tried to conquer them they were beaten by untrained farmers who bravely took up weapons and won the battle...when it was actually a trained army of Americans and French ....and there was an item with President George W. Bush prattling on about the day they gained independence and rang the independence bell loud and clear......the bell never arrived until 40 years later....and the Statue of Liberty was originally designed for the middle east who couldn't afford it so it was redesigned and sold to America.......it was a very interesting programme which makes you realise why a lot of Americans live in a movie world protected by John Wayne. 3.The BBC have been advertising the arrival of a new series featuring Alan Partridge...played by Steve Coogan....after all the hype I decided to watch it.....I must be missing something....there were a few rave reviews.....I don't think I even smiled...it was awful and that is half an hour of my life I won't get back......similarly this programme followed another half hour "comedy" called Warren....starring Martin Clunes......what I fail to understand is why these popular stars get involved in such rubbish....are they that hard up?....HOWEVER there is one saviour...it is called "Cunk on Britain" and features Diane Morgan as Philomena Cunk discussing the history of the country with top scientists and historians......the fact she knows nothing at all makes it very funny and original so the BBC must have SOME staff with a bit of knowledge about comedy. 4.I also watched a documentary on Walt Disney.....what an incredibly talented man.....the programme went through his life from his humble beginnings to building his amazing empire....what it brought home was the detail and thought behind the cartoons....for example he would have his cartoonists sitting in a room wathing a girl dancing and studying the movements of her dress and body....also he would bring animals in to study their movements.....he would even film a stone being thrown through a window then slowing it down to study what actually happens to the glass.....all this knowledge was put into the cartoons....most of which is missed by the average viewer....brilliant stuff.....it makes you realise what a genius he was.......not to mention the musicians who put the music together.....a great programme. 5.I thought I would link the song this week with the American mentality....it is called The Ballad of John Wayne....who is regarded as a hero over there....he won wars as a marine and won the west as a tough cowboy....when in fact he never saw any active service....he did HIS bit on the silver screen......which for some seems to be good enough....so "Get on ya horse and ride" with the Ballad of John Wayne.

Radishes can be planted before the first thaw, so that in the spring, you have these lovely little roots with bushy tops. The same goes for carrots. Whereas parsnips are planted later because you want to harvest them after the first frost so that the sugars are concentrated.” [11:00] — Diane Morgan on The Farm Report
