Are you watching Blue Lights? If not, why not? On this episode is one of the stars of the Belfast-based cop drama. She's a star of stage and screen at the peak of her acting prowess. You may have seen her as Sherlock' Holmes' evil sister in Sherlock alongside Benedict Cumberbatch or starring opposite Suranne Jones in Doctor Foster. If you're really lucky you may have even seen her break-out theatre role as Ophelia in Hamlet at London's Barbican. Sian rarely does podcast interviews - so what an honour to share a couple of glasses of wine and a really lovely chat about the confidence gained from early drama classes, the women who've reached down to help her on her journey, and the illness that nearly ended her career before it really began. This week on the TV Gold podcast four programs – three about different sorts of horror, and the other a romcom series. • Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy (Foxtel/Binge, 8 episodes) A horror story about America’s most notorious serial killer. But a TV series made without exploiting the actual crimes. It instead focuses on the impact on the victims families and follows closely the police investigation and the court case. • Film Club (Foxtel/Binge, 6 episodes) A quirky comedy from actor/producer Aimee Lou Wood who stars as Evie who runs a film club in the garage at her mother’s house. Mum is played by Suranne Jones who is not really known for her comedy skills. But it’s an intriguing premise and there is a nice cameo from Emmy-winning star of Adolescence, Owen Cooper. • A House of Dynamite (Netflix, movie) The much anticipated new movie from director Kathryn Bigelow. The film repeatedly tracks the 18 minutes that follow a missile being launched at the United States — first from the perspective of the White House Situation Room, then from the perspective of United States Strategic Command, and finally from the perspective of the President himself. • Andrew’s Halloween special - It: Welcome to Derry (HBO Max) A terrifying prequel series that goes back to 1962 to trace the origins of the murderous, shape-shifting entity known as Pennywise the Clown. Based on the novel It by Stephen King.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're joined by a BAFTA winner for an easy-to-make, extra tasty dinner and a spoonful of dessert. Suranne Jones' acting credits are a must-watch list of shows including Doctor Foster, Vigil, Gentleman Jack and Coronation Street. Add to that list her new show, Frauds, a heist-driven thriller in which she stars alongside Jodie Whittaker. On the menu for this episode is seared tuna with braised tomatoes & chickpeas, paired on this occasion with a Telmont Champagne Reserve Brut NV - a special accompaniment and a favourite of Suranne's when she is drinking. This is followed by a perfectly seasonal autumn apple & blackberry crumble. Suranne's a bad influence in Frauds, but pure joy and excellent vibes around the Dish table, bringing a list of food likes and dislikes that matches, and maybe surpasses, the one brought by Benedict Cumberbatch. We get into the magic of Oldham, the power of Corrie and the appeal of Doctor Foster... and Suranne quickly comes clean that she's a Dish superfan having listened to ALL episodes while on set for her new show. We salute you! You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and, new for this season, on Spotify.
We said it last week, but this time it really does feel like the hottest day of the year… joining us for lunch is the gorgeous actress Suranne Jones! Star of Doctor Foster, Vigil, Gentleman Jack, and a Coronation Street icon, and this week we caught up to talk about her new TV project, ‘Hostage'. We heard about growing up in Chadderton (and how mum used to go horse riding there!), how she met her husband at a wedding, filming Vigil during Covid lockdowns, setting up her own production company, admitting she isn't the best cook and we even hear about her love of witches - and the Channel 4 documentary she made about them! This episode has been a very long time coming, Suranne, you were totally worth the wait as you are a total delight! Suranne's new series Hostage launches on Netflix on the 21st August. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Nathalie is a new rising star of TV drama, and is set to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Nicola Walker, Suranne Jones and Vicky McClure. She portrays Leila Hassoun-Kenny, a rigorous CPS lawyer leading the case against the accused. She stars alongside Adeel Akhtar (Sherwood), Joe Dempise (Game of Thrones) and Michael Socha (The Gallows Pole). The story will once again centre around a hotly contested criminal trial that divides the nation and takes place in the full glare of the media spotlight. Made by World Productions (Vigil, Line of Duty, Save Me) for the BBC and written by Ben Richards, the fictional five-part drama will focus on the high-profile case of ‘Officer X' - a policeman accused of murdering a climate change activist. Nathalie Armin, a Central School of Speech and Drama-trained actor, has made her mark across stage, film, and television. Currently gracing the Almeida stage in ALMA MATTER, she previously starred alongside James Norton in the award-winning A LITTLE LIFE in London's West End. Her theatrical repertoire includes powerful performances in FORCE MAJEURE (Donmar Warehouse), BEHIND THE BEAUTIFUL FOREVERS (National Theatre), and OTHELLO (RSC). She has also impressed audiences in THE DOCTOR (Almeida), ANNA (National Theatre), and RALEGH: THE TREASON TRIAL (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse: Shakespeare's Globe). On the small screen, Nathalie has left her mark with BBC Three comedy JUICE, and alongside Lesley Manville in MAGPIE MURDERS. Other projects include popular ITV drama's TOO CLOSE, MARCELLA, VERA and UNFORGOTTEN. Additionally, she graced the silver screen in films such as action-thriller ANNA, THE BATMAN, FINAL SCORE.
This week, six millennials are astonishingly successful finding a large house to rent — the power points don't work, there's no mobile reception and the walls are quite literally made of alien woodlice. Oh, and it collapses into dust on their first night. It's Knock Knock. Notes and links Brendan quickly identifies two of the film antecedents of this story: The Evil Dead (1981), with its demonically possessed trees, and Hitchcock's Psycho (1960), whose antagonist has a complex relationship with his mother. Nathan first encounters David Suchet as Blott in Blott on the Landscape (1985), a BBC adaptation of Tom Sharpe's 1975 satirical novel of the same name. Knock Knock was written by Mike Bartlett, who was famous for a TV series called Dr Foster (2015), starring Suranne Jones as a woman who starts to suspect her husband of infidelity. David Suchet's first appearance in a Poirot property starring Peter Ustinov as Poirot — the 1985 made-for-TV movie Thirteen at Dinner (1985), an adaptation of Christie's Lord Edgeware Dies (1933), in which Suchet played Inspector Japp. Simon refers to the vault-related theorising of Whovians, a comedy aftershow that accompanied Series 10, 11 and 12 of Doctor Who on ABC-TV in Australia. Our very own Adam Richard was a regular in the show's first two seasons. And finally, Brendan recklessly introduces us to another possible inspiration for this episode, the 1977 film Death Bed: The Bed That Eats, which we would all have been better off not knowing about. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social, Brendan is at @retrobrendo.bsky.social, and Simon is on X at @simonmoore72. This season finale of The Witch Wave features Suranne Jones, the award-winning English actor, producer, and series creator. She's been nominated for several awards for acting and won a BAFTA for her starring role in the hit series Doctor Foster: A Woman Scorned. Some highlights from her decades long television career include starring roles in Gentleman Jack, Vigil, and Scott and Bailey, and she's also appeared in such British television intuitions as Coronation Street and Doctor Who. She's currently in production on a new Netflix thiller series called The Choice, which sees her starring as the British Prime Minister opposite Julie Delpy's French president, so look for that in 2025. Suranne also has an illustrious theatre career, and has starred in such plays as Frozen, Orlando, and Beautiful Thing. As producer, Suranne runs the TeamAkers Productions company with her husband Laurence Akers, and it's this company that is responsible for the new docuseries, Suranne Jones: Investigating Witch Trials(which features our own Pam Grossman!) The series is currently airing in 2 parts on the UK's Channel 4 on June 23rd and June 30th, and if you missed the first part not to worry as both will be streaming on the Channel 4 site as well.On this episode, Suranne discusses what compelled her to make a witchcraft documentary, her personal relationship to magic, and the shapeshifting abilities that she brings to the craft of acting.Pam also talks about why historical witch hunts are relevant to this present moment, and answers a listener question about revealing her witch self on a date. Our sponsors for this episode are Ritual + Shelter, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, Nicole Marxen, BetterHelp, Snowy Owl Tea, Liza Fenster's COMMUNION course, Sphere + Sundry, and The Queer Witches of Maude's Paperwing GalleryWe also have brand new print-on-demand merch like Witch Wave shirts, sweatshirts, totes, stickers, and mugs available now here. And if you want more Witch Wave, please consider supporting us on Patreon to get access to detailed show notes, bonus Witch Wave Plus episodes, Pam's monthly online rituals, and more! When is a TARDIS not a TARDIS? When it's a bitey mad lady, of course. Yes, The Doctor's Wife shows a side of the show's signature blue box that we've never seen before, personifying the Doctor's “ship” in a way that's unexpected, insanely quirky and… well, sexy. That's thanks in large part to Suranne Jones' pitch-perfect performance as Idris, a woman possessed with the essence of the TARDIS, the Doctor's longest-running companion. Neil Gamian's clever script wisely gives her a lot of time opposite Matt Smith — at his madcap best — and fans will delight in seeing the Doctor and his time machine finally say the things they've always wanted to say to each other. But does that make the story a classic or just a really satisfying interlude? Dave Kitchen from The Doctor Who Show joins Pete and Chris on this journey outside of our universe to answer that very question. Commentary for The Doctor's Wife begins at 25:06.
