Jen Offord (Standard Issue Podcast, author The Year of the Robin) and Hana Walker Brown (Broccoli Productions, author A Delicate Game) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Jen's choice The Lost Daughter.   The Lost Daughter is a 2021 drama, based on the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal (her directorial debut). It stars Olivia Coleman as Leda, a university professor and translator on holiday in Greece. One day on the beach she meets Nina (Dakota Johnson) a young mother, when Nina's three-year-old daughter goes missing for a short period Nina is faced with her own memories and feelings of being a mother, told in flashbacks with Jessie Buckley playing the young Leda. Paul Mescal, Peter Sarsgaard and Ed Harris also co-star. Feelings about The Lost Daughter were mixed but there is no doubt about the powerhouse of acting on show - particularly from Coleman and Buckley playing Leda at different times of her life. The Lost Daughter is a bold choice by Gyllenhaal and Flixwatcher and guests look forward to seeing what she directs next. The Lost Daughter scored fairly highly on recommendability but with a runtime of two hours the repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.39.   [supsystic-tables id=294] Episode #282 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #282 Crew of Hana Walker Brown (@HWalker_Brown) and Jen Offord (@inspireajen) Find their Websites online at https://twitter.com/broccolicontent And at https://twitter.com/hodderbooks And at https://linktr.ee/hana_walker_brown And at https://linktr.ee/JenOfford And at https://twitter.com/llmonts And at https://twitter.com/standardissueUK Please make sure you give them some love   More about The Lost Daughter For more info on The Lost Daughter, you can visit The Lost Daughter IMDb page here or The Lost Daughter Rotten Tomatoes page here. Hana Walker Brown (Broccoli Productions, author A Delicate Game) and Jen Offord (Standard Issue Podcast, author The Year of the Robin) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Hana's choice The Father. The Father is a 2020 drama directed by Florian Zeller and is based on the stage play of the same name. It stars Anthony Hopkins, in an Oscar-winning performance, as the father, Anthony, Olivia Coleman as his daughter Anne, Mark Gatiss, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell, and Olivia Williams Co star. Anthony is in his 80s and has dementia, his daughter Anne is frustrated as he has rejected several carers and it is putting a strain on her relationship with her partner. Through their interactions we move between Anthony's flat and Anne's flat. We meet Laura, a carer, who bears a likeness to his other daughter Lucy or is she his memory of Lucy? There are two different men in the flat, sometimes Paul and sometimes James. The Father is a powerful and disorientating experience of how it feels to slowly lose your memory to dementia. Characters and rooms shift and change and the viewer questions what is real and what is imagined. The Father is a difficult watch but it is also an incredible film with stellar performances. Unsurprisingly the scores for recommendability were very high. Slightly lower scores for repeat viewing give The Father an overall rating of 3.96.   [supsystic-tables id=279] Episode #279 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #279 Crew of Hana Walker Brown (@HWalker_Brown) and Jen Offord (@inspireajen) Find their Websites online at https://twitter.com/broccolicontent And at https://twitter.com/hodderbooks And at https://linktr.ee/hana_walker_brown And at https://linktr.ee/JenOfford And at https://twitter.com/llmonts And at https://twitter.com/standardissueUK Please make sure you give them some love   More about The Father For more info on The Father, you can visit The Father IMDb page here or The Father Tomatoes page here. "A box of neon sex delights" - Standard Issue meets Freelance Pod at the Boulevard Theatre, Soho

It's a Standard Issue x Freelance Pod crossover episode! I met up with Jen Offord, Mickey Noonan and Hannah Dunleavy at the Boulevard Theatre, Soho, to talk about our upcoming live shows there, how the internet has changed journalism, feminism and what their live recording has in store for the audience. Here's the Instagram album containing the picture we talk about in the cold open. It's definitely worth a look, especially if you love neon!  You'll also hear a little bit from writer Gemma Milne, who's guesting on Freelance Pod's live show at the Boulevard on Sunday 17th November. Standard Issue Podcast is the result of live shows that the gang - including their boss and SI founder, Sarah Millican - used to put on to support the original online magazine. So the liveness started first - the podcast second.  Mickey and Hannah are trained journalists with years of experience on newspapers and magazines between them, with a major highlight being Mickey having spent 9 months as a sexpert on a lads' mag. They've also both tried their hands at comedy in the past. Jen came to journalism from the civil service, and in truly early internet tradition, set up a themed blog that caught the imagination, and resulted in articles, TV appearances and a book deal.  We recorded this episode on a landing at the Boulevard Theatre, in true Soho style, between a lift, a loo and a glass bridge by a neon tattooist sign. Cheers to the theatre's Emma Groome for sorting us out!  Look out for Standard Issue's women in TV-themed live show at the Boulevard on Sunday 10th November. You can find SI on the socials here: Instagram: @standardissuepodcast Twitter: @standardissueuk Facebook: @standardissuemagazine -- How has your industry moved from analogue to digital? Ep #060 In Bruges with Hannah Dunleavy and Jen Offord from Standard Issue

Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 30, 2018 40:21

OMG! Episode 60! Hannah and Jen from Standard Issue (a podcast by women for women BOOM!) return for Hannah’s choice In Bruges. Where to start with In Bruges? It’s a 2008 film from Martin McDonagh starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two hitmen attempting to lay low in Bruges. What follows includes a batshit awesome performance from Ralph Finnes, a coke fueled racist rant from a dwarf actor and enclaves. It’s a comedy in case you were wondering. In the arc of Colin Farrell this is brilliant and hilarious, the chemistry between him and Gleeson is genuine and completely convincing. New comer to In Bruges Jen found it “well bleak” and not the “bantz-a-fucking-rama” she was led to believe - and rightly so. Definitely not up there for her like Bugsy Malone or Kindergarten Cop. It is bleak, spoilers there is a LOT of death but it is also really, really funny. Definitely an acquired taste is required and if you’re into it then you’ll be rewarded, if you’re not, maybe give it another try? Scores [supsystic-tables id='62']Generally, this film comes recommended with MASSIVE CAVEATS, it’s violent, it’s bloody, it’s very sweary, it’s pretty weird and it’s fucking bleak, so you have been warned. Overall Flixwatcher and guests award In Bruges 3.58 (so nearly a 4) - a second watch from Jen (with less sleeping) might have bumped it up to a 4, which was generally how Twitter felt too. What do you guys think? Have you seen In Bruges? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! Its Episode 46! We’re reviewing Creed with Jen and Hannah from Standard Issue! The 2015 sort of spin-off, sort of sequel sequel in the Rocky film series. Michael B. Jordan is the son of Apollo Creed and Sylvester (‘sentient piece of corn beef’) Stallone returns as Rocky. If you have a vague interest in the Rocky series and can get over the fact the main character is called ADONIS Creed then this film is for you. If you have no interest in the Rocky series, or boxing and think a main character called ADONIS Creed is ridiculous then step out of the ring! Scores [supsystic-tables id='48'] Creed scores a respectable score overall of 3.1, considering Helen’s low scoring. If you’re a fan of Rocky and boxing (or The Wire for that matter) you’ll enjoy this - if you don’t then probably don’t bother, unless you have a spare two hours and 13 minutes and no other plans, knock yourself out!
