We're getting candid in our interview with Hannah Wicklund about the hardships of being a young female artist in a heavily male rock scene. How she was able to connect with a deeper feminine and emotional side of herself through taking time off the road and rediscovering her love of painting. And how all of this has impacted the way she shows up as a performer and the fan connections she's made because of it. This is the last of 3 episodes that looks at what home coffee brewers need to know and do to be able to serve the perfect cup of coffee, every time. Once again, Kenneth and Katie sit down with Michael Matthews of Alinea Coffee Roasters. He explains how he got into roasting and serving specialty coffee and food in his two highly popular Bearcat restaurants in New Orleans. For this episode, they talk through the pros and cons of different filters, ways to prepare the milk, and coffee mugs. KEY TAKEAWAYS Metal filters do not filter out the fats, so you get a sheen on top of your cup of coffee. Some people say they can taste the difference between a bleached and unbleached coffee filter. Choose a mug that feels good in your hand and one that enables the coffee to cool fairly quickly to the right drinking temperature. Letting your coffee cool for between 12 to 15 minutes helps it get to a temperature where you can appreciate the flavor better. BEST MOMENTS ‘Always pre-rinse your filters in hot water. ´ ‘Pre-warm your cups.' ‘I really like a fairly sharp edge where you're sipping from the cup.' GUEST RESOURCES https://www.alineacoffees.com/ https://bearcatcafe.com/ Instagram - @alineacoffeeroasters, @michaelmatthewscoffee, @brewlikemike, @bearcatCBD EPISODE RESOURCES Drippy Cups - https://www.drippypots.com/ ABOUT THE GUEST Michael Matthews used to be a professional drummer. While touring the USA and Europe with Earphunk, Mia Borders, and Hannah Wicklund he got hooked on coffee. Between load-in and showtime, or on off days, he passed the time looking for the closest coffee shops serving good espresso. Something which made him realize that, when it came to flavor, there were some huge differences. Seeing small coffee shop owners roasting their own beans inspired him to do the same. During his downtime, he used his little Arc 800-gram roaster to learn the art and eventually ended up creating his own specialty coffee. A product that he now ships across the world and serves at the two restaurants he runs - Bearcat 845 and Bearcat Cafe in New Orleans, LA. In this episode, Kenneth and Katie sit down with Michael Matthews of Alinea Coffee Roasters, who also runs two Bearcat coffee shops in New Orleans. This is the 2nd of 3 episodes that cover what home coffee brewers need to do to be able to serve the perfect cup of coffee, every time. This time, they explain what type of kettle gets the best results and how to get the water temperature right for each roast type. Kenneth and Michael also talk extensively about home brewers and their recommendations. Covering cone and flatbed brewers, clever drippers, Kalita Waves, April brewers, Hario V60, SCA certified brewers and the AeroPress! That's alot of ground to cover in one episode! KEY TAKEAWAYS Temperature control gooseneck kettles give you precise control of temperature flow rate and where the water goes. Darker roast beans are a bit more structurally compromised, so you can use water that is at the lower end of the temperature range. For flatbed brewers, it is usually best to use a slightly coarser grind. Keep experimenting with your brews - you'll learn so much. If you find that your Kalita brewer chokes, put a couple of whole beans in the bottom before you add the filter! BEST MOMENTS ‘Proper water temperature is essential to proper extraction ´ ‘I really like experimenting with the clever dripper.' 'The Aeropress or a Clever is my go-to brewer most mornings.' In this episode, Kenneth and Katie sit down with Michael Matthews of Alinea Coffee Roasters, who also co-owns the highly popular Bearcat restaurants in New Orleans. This is the first of 3 episodes that looks at what home coffee brewers need to know so they can be able to serve the perfect cup of coffee, every time. This episode covers equipment, ingredients, techniques, and tips. They talk through choosing the right water, sourcing fresh coffee that tastes good to you, storage, grinders, and why it is worth using scales. KEY TAKEAWAYS Using water with the right mineral content has a huge impact on the taste. Look for coffee that has a 'roasted-on' date instead of a 'best by' date. Oxygen and light are enemies of coffee - choose your storage container with this in mind. There is a big difference between blade and burr grinders. BEST MOMENTS ‘Water is 98% of your cup. ´ ‘For peak freshness, I'm looking at anywhere from four days to two weeks off roast.' ‘I have a siphon brewer and I absolutely love it.' ‘A better grinder is going to give you a more equal particle size.' We thought a grizzly bear had entered Nashville's 3rd & Lindsley when Hannah Wicklund fired up her rig at soundcheck on March 20, when she headlined the club with her band the Steppin' Stones. Luckily, it was just the rude tone of her Tom Anderson Guitarworks Guardian Angel model pumping through the sneer of her Orange head and cab, so … no carnage, but some echoes of classic Peter Green. Although Wicklund—who was the subject of a https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/hannah-wicklunds-coming-of-age (PG profile) in 2018—has U.S. and Canadian tour dates scheduled through early September, this was a rare stop in the South Carolina native's adopted home town. She's also been at work on a sequel to her 2018 album, Hannah Wicklund & the Steppin' Stones, which she says is a coming-of-age story that will accent both her songwriting and her feminine side, although still showcase her 6-string chemistry. And speaking of chemistry, there's an almost mystical conversation about tuning in 432 Hz in the Rundown that you won't want to miss. Wicklund's alchemical adventure began when she was 9 and her father gifted her an Anderson model. Thirteen years later, she's still loyal to the brand, so that's a good place for our Rundown to start. Hannah Wicklund graduated from our small town high school two years early to pursue her dreams of becoming a musician and BOY OH BOY did she do the damn thing. Hannah has toured both nationally and internationally, performing among the likes of such legends as Tom Petty, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jackson Brown, and more. She talks with me about what it's like to thrust yourself into being a full-time rockstar at such a young age, the drawbacks behind being a young woman playing music venues and clubs across the world, and offers a crash course in dealing with hometown bullies. Oh, and I deeply embarrass myself within the first five minutes. Enjoy!

Roy Saunders is a Southern musician who blends the sounds of country, southern rock and blues. Certain obvious influences stand out including The Highwaymen, Cody Jinx, and Blackberry Smoke. Add in a little family style flavor of The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd and you've got a distinctly original southern sound. Born in the mountains of North Georgia, his musical heritage goes back to North Florida with his grandfather, a professional popular pianist and Musician's Union president, and father, a touring guitarist and recording artist. Self taught, Roy formed the Atlanta based band 11th Night in 2012 with his brother, Ryan. He then moved to Savannah where he co-founded the Garth Brooks style duo "Escaping Fate," with low country legend and musical mainstay, Jay Morelock. While in Savannah, Roy opened for, Ian McLagan, international touring artist Hannah Wicklund and the Steppin Stones, People's Blues of Richmond, Zack Myers of Shinedown fame, and Austin Webb. Now based in Atlanta, Roy played 150 shows in five states in the past year alone. He also released his swampy original single ‘Stranger' on streaming platforms with an EP to follow in 2020. Roy has built a full band featuring guitarist Jay Morelock on guitar, his father Steven Saunders on bass and seasoned percussionist Tom Dickenson. The group recently performed at Shezmu Cellars in Marietta, GA to promote the single ‘Stranger.' 2020 sees Roy booking at new venues, working on more recordings and scheduling a pending southeastern U.S. fall tour. The best is yet to come for this rising country music outlaw. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Her band have already been billed alongside the likes of Jefferson Starship, Kansas, the Marshall Tucker Band, Cage The Elephant, Alanis Morissette, and more. She has been writing new music, which she hopes to record late this year.
In the last five years, Hilton Head native Hannah Wicklund and her band The Steppin Stones have gone from playing gigs in City Market as a cover band, to writing original material and touring with the likes of The Marshall Tucker Band, The Stone Temple Pilots, and playing massive festivals like Shaky Knees in Atlanta. They make a stop in Savannah, on a 30-date international tour, on May 9 at Barrelhouse South. Do Savannah Editor Joshua Peacock chatted with Wicklund for this week’s Do Savannah Podcast. As per her request and maybe a new feature of my podcast, I have an unfiltered and underproduced chat with Rocker Hannah Wicklund, the "21-year-old powerhouse guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. The South Carolina-born (and now East Nashville-based) artist who formed the band as an eight-year-old has developed a powerful and sublime synthesis of skills and makes it clear that the future is hers to conquer." Apollogies in advance for the clipping yall. Special Guest: Hannah Wicklund.
Hannah Wicklund is a 20 year old that brings a very mature sonic presence, and I think you’ll agree both her playing and singing is solid for anyone of any age. Hannah wears her influences on her sleeve, and her 3rd record, this one self titled, will no doubt be her break through. We caught up with Hannah while she was on the road, and our conversations started when I asked just how young she was when she got started… You can learn more about Hannah by visiting [hannahwicklund.com][1] and check her out on the road through February and March and no doubt at some festivals this summer.
