Are you considering making a big shift in your life? If not you, then perhaps someone you know? Then this is the episode for you! I’m digging into how you can go about quitting your job, almost, guilt free!The first step you need to take is to address the guilt that you’re feeling. Who is it serving? What is it telling you? What good is coming to you by holding onto your guilt? What is the guilt keeping you from?    It’s important to address this huge block because most of us go into medicine feeling as if we’ve been called to it. Suddenly abandoning this calling brings up a lot of turmoil so this is the first thing to address.   Step 2? Get clear on your intentions and how you want to show up in the world. Were you truly called to medicine or can you help heal others in a different way?    Listen in to hear all of the steps to this framework and hopefully decide if it’s better for you and your family to stay… or to take the leap and go! Because it’s okay to quit your job. Even as a doctor. You have a right to fulfillment and happiness!   “As I have gone through different transitions, guilt has been a big monster emotion that has shown up in my life.” Dr. Errin Weisman In this episode: [00:28] Hey OH! Welcome to another episode of Doctor Me First! [03:00] You can transition whatever your journey is in the best way possible. [04:49] Step #1, address the guilt. [06:38] Hey guilt, what are you trying to teach me right now? [06:54] Who is this guilt serving? [07:15] What good is coming from holding on to this guilt? [07:27] What is the guilt protecting you from? [08:11] Now I’m going to ask you some questions to see if you can move past the guilt or see if there is another emotion under the guilt that you would rather have. [09:20] Step #2, get clear on your intentions and how you want to show up. [10:14] Step #3, come up with a short-term plan, transitional plan, and then a long-term goal. [11:44] Step #4, understand the details so you can do the thing and the technical HR stuff. [12:54] Step #5, have support all along the way. [15:09] If you need more support, join the Burned Out to Badass Group or my self paced course the Burned Out to Badass CME. [15:58] The only thing stopping you, is you. Hey-Oh, Doccalo! Hope you got your turtlenecks all cleaned up. Hell, keep em dirty for all we care! It’s time for another episode of the Documenteers and this episode gets pretty bloody! By popular demand, Bob and Stuart sat down to discuss an HBO original documentary, and our first foray into an Alex Gibney film! Elizabeth Holmes had a dream, and an uncle (once), and a deathly fear of having her blood drawn. So she had a vision to get full blood diagnostic from a mere pin-prick. Then you put a “nanotainer” into a box/machine called an “Edison” and get a full blood diagnostic in the mere minutes. Sounds great, right? Henry Kissinger, Joe Biden, Jared Leto, George Shultz, Bill Clinton, Betsy DeVos, Rupert Murdoch and Walgreens are all so down with the idea that they throw money at it. Problem is that there’s a little thing called “science” and “facts” and science doesn't give a damn about an inspirational speech. Stuart and Bob break down the documentary “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley” by The Gib®. We’re guessing that all those investors we named probably wish they invested in a time machine so they could not throw all this money around. What makes Elizabeth Holmes tick? What’s going to happen to her? Does she blink? What, exactly, is inspiration porn? There’s a lot to unpack here and a lot of “The Truth” to throw up in the faces of “The Man” and we’re just the pack of assholes to get that done. Siemens is the real name of a real company. How wild is that? Apologies to Siemens. Keep on Doccin’. www.documenteerspodcast.com Here’s a trailer for “The Inventor”: https://youtu.be/wtDaP18OGfw Here’s John Carreyrou’s WSJ article: https://www.wsj.com/articles/theranos-has-struggled-with-blood-tests-1444881901 Here’s some Theranos commercials by Errol Morris: https://patrickthomasoneill.com/Theranos Here’s the video for the timeless “Pump Up the Jam” by Technotronic: https://youtu.be/9EcjWd-O4jI

Season 2 Episode 5 JERSEY DEVIL: MYTH OR REALITY On this episode of the I Want to Believe podcast we’re going to discuss the Jersey Devil, HEY-OH!!! The story of the Jersey Devil goes back to almost 3 centuries. And since then, it has become a muddled heap of myth, legend, true stories, fake stories with believers and skeptics. (Plug time!) As of RIGHT NOW, you can watch me and Bill Brock’s documentary, Abducted New England on Amazon Prime. And my book Otherworldly Encounters, is available wherever books are sold. Links are below! Ok, how’s about we dive in, eh? The legend goes that in the Pine Barren forests of New Jersey, a woman who went by the moniker, Mother Leeds had given birth to 12 children. In 1735, she found that she was pregnant with her 13th. The Leeds family was poor, her husband a drunk and when they found that she was pregnant again, she cursed the child and said, “Let this one be a devil!” She went into labor a few months after that proclamation, on a reportedly, “dark & stormy night”, and all had forgotten about the curse. Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran, authors of From Weird, “Her children and husband huddled together in one room of their Leeds Point home while local midwives gathered to deliver the baby in another. By all accounts the birth went routinely, and the thirteenth Leeds child was a seemingly normal baby boy. Within minutes however, Mother Leeds’s unholy wish of months before began to come to fruition. The baby started to change and metamorphosed right before her very eyes. Within moments it transformed from a beautiful newborn baby into a hideous creature unlike anything the world had ever seen. The wailing infant began growing at an incredible rate. It sprouted horns from the top of its head and talon-like claws tore through the tips of its fingers. Leathery bat-like wings unfurled from its back, and hair and feathers sprouted all over the child’s body. Its eyes began glowing bright red as they grew larger in the monster’s gnarled and snarling face. The creature savagely attacked its own mother, killing her, then turned its attention to the rest of the horrified onlookers who witnessed its tempestuous transformation. It flew at them, clawing and biting, voicing unearthly shrieks the entire time. It tore the midwives limb from limb, maiming some and killing others.” That story is what the majority of people know about the Jersey Devil. But when you do a bit of research, a whole lot more comes to the surface. The real story includes some political intrigue, Quaker in-fighting, almanacs, a cross-dressing royal governor, and a man named Benjamin Franklin. Listen to the episode for the full story. HEY OH! Look who's back. Coming in with a book update, followed by a conversation that desperately needed to be had, and I couldn't think of a more perfect guest for it than dietitian Paige Smathers (of the Nutrition Matters podcast). Paige and I are addressing some recent criticisms made about the non-diet movement like we're a) telling everyone to eat doughnuts all day long and b) shaming people who want to lose weight. This is in response to an article that was published recently which criticised the non-diet movement without appreciating some of the subtleties or nuance of the approach. Paige and I are discussing the concerns, doing a little reflecting, and trying to figure out how we can make the approach more accessible. We discuss: ✨ Why it's important not to jump into nutrition too fast or too hard ✨ Knowing your audience and protecting the most vulnerable ✨ Why it's important to expose people to a variety of foods ✨ How we can bring make out message accessible to people without alienating others ✨ Why we need to be critical of the non-diet approach to help it move forward ✨ Why being critical of the non-diet approach doesn't mean you're for diets ✨ Why you shouldn't feel ashamed for wanting to lose weight or being on a diet BUT ✨ Why it's also important to understand the forces working on us that make us feel like we need to lose weight to he healthy, happy, or comfortable in our bodies ✨ Why doing the work of a non-diet advocate is HARD and why I had to delete Twitter the other week Show Notes {Paige on Instagram | Facebook} {Nutrition Matters Podcast} {Paige's Website} {Long-term weight-loss maintenance: a meta-analysis of US studies} {Ineffectiveness of commercial weight-loss programs for achieving modest but meaningful weight loss: Systematic review and meta-analysis} {The National Weight Control Registry: A Critique} {Sofie Hagen's Made of Human Podcast} {Sofie Hagen's Shimmer Shatter Show (Highly recommend)} {Is the Anti-Diet Movement Leading us Astray?}

HEY OH! I can’t wait to introduce you to this week’s guest, because she’s someone I’ve followed for years, she’s one of the people who originally got me interested in intuitive eating, health at every size and non diet approaches to health and nutrition. Kelsey Miller is senior features writer for Refinery 29 in New York where she writes the column the Anti Diet Project which is all about intuitive eating, body image, and sane fitness. She’s also the author of 'Big Girl:How I Gave up Dieting and Got a Life'. And today we talk a little about her intuitive eating journey and how it’s really hard so don’t buy into the BS on Instagram where bloggers are like, I used to eat clean but now I eat intuitively without any concept of what it actually means (or any carbs on their plate. We also talk about how to be an advocate for body positivity from a place of thin privilege, we talk about recognising other types of privilege in the body positivity space and how unless you’re talking about intersectionality, then you’re kinda part of the problem. And she also gives a lot of great advice about how to get more comfortable with your body and spoiler; it involves getting out of your comfort zone. Really love this conversation.   SHOW NOTES {Kelsey on Instagram | Twitter} https://www.instagram.com/mskelseymiller/ https://twitter.com/mskelseymiller {The Anti Diet Project} http://www.refinery29.com/the-anti-diet-project {Big Girl} http://amzn.to/2ulZKmu {Kelsey on Body Image : VBO | Going Backless | Boudoir Photos} http://www.refinery29.com/vbo-plus-size-positivity http://www.refinery29.com/plus-size-fashion-taboo-backless-dress http://www.refinery29.com/body-positive-boudoir-photography {The Origins of Body Positivity on Food Psych Podcast} https://www.christyharrison.com/foodpsych/4/the-roots-of-the-body-positive-movement-with-connie-sobczak
