Have you ever watched someone you care about repeatedly return to a relationship that's clearly hurting them, despite all logic and reason? Or found yourself unable to break free from a partner who alternates between cruel indifference and intoxicating affection? Tony Overbay, LMFT, comprehensively examines all of the factors at play in hopes of shining a light on understanding and ultimately healing from one of psychology's most misunderstood phenomena: trauma bonding. Tony explains how the same mechanisms that kept B.F. Skinner's rats frantically pressing a lever for unpredictable rewards are at work in toxic relationships. He explains the biological "amygdala hijack" that literally shuts down one's ability to think rationally when anxiety strikes and why well-meaning advice like "just don't worry about it" actually makes things worse through psychological reactance. This comprehensive episode covers: The neurological science behind trauma bonding and why it creates addiction-like withdrawal symptoms How childhood experiences shape our relationship with emotions and set us up for unhealthy patterns Why telling someone "don't think about it" guarantees they'll think about it more The critical difference between guilt ("I did something bad") and shame ("I am bad") Practical ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) techniques like expansion and mindfulness The powerful Buddhist salt and water metaphor for managing emotional pain Why no one—not even identical twins—experiences the world exactly as you do How to break the cycle of seeking external validation that keeps you trapped Whether you're personally experiencing a trauma bond, supporting someone who is, or simply want to understand why people stay in painful relationships, this episode provides compassionate insight and practical tools for healing. Tony's conversational style makes complex psychological concepts accessible while offering hope that with time, understanding, and the right support, you can reclaim your emotional autonomy and build healthier connections. 00:00 Introduction: The Impact of 'Say Anything' 01:21 Setting the Stage: Understanding Relationship Dynamics 01:50 Who This Episode is For 03:10 Introduction to Trauma Bonding 04:03 Welcome to the Virtual Couch 04:35 Engage with Us: Social Media and Upcoming Events 07:04 The Concept of Trauma Bonding 16:51 The Science Behind Trauma Bonding 21:25 Understanding the Amygdala Hijack 21:49 The Impact of Stress Hormones on the Brain 23:03 The Cycle of Trauma Bonding 24:21 The Ineffectiveness of Well-Meaning Advice 24:59 Psychological Reactance and the White Bear Effect 26:24 Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) 28:18 The Concept of Expansion 30:05 Mindfulness and Changing Your Relationship with Thoughts 32:27 Guilt vs. Shame 34:11 Healing from Trauma Bonds 36:45 The Importance of Self-Validation 43:43 Seeking Support and Practicing Mindfulness
EP 383 - Jonathan MacDonald is back on the show and keener than ever to get you interested in Ethical Tech.We discuss why now, more than ever, people need to be given the tools, and moral frameworks to inform their interactions with increasingly opaque technology. How things like social media are seemingly set up to keep us amused, distracted and rob us of our critical thinking faculties and what that means for humanity in the long term.Jonathan isn't an anarchist in a tin foil hat (or a cryptoevangelist in a blonde wig come to that) but he is very compelling on why we need to question whether Big Tech algorithms and the people who control them actually have our best interests at heart. He's pretty convinced that they don't, or at least don't care about us beyond what we can do for them. Which is why he has set up SELF - a personal privacy filter - and also ETHICS TV to help people discuss, understand and control their own moral choices around tech.We also chat about the Roman Empire and its attitude to analogous situations. We know plenty of you like to think about that kind of thing quite a lot.*For Apple Podcast chapters, access them from the menu in the bottom right corner of your player*Spotify Video Chapters:00:00 BWB with Jonathan MacDonald02:23 Meet Jonathan03:18 The Mission: Alternative Future for Technology04:44 Humans Are Batteries05:05 The Reality of Free Services05:58 The Normalisation of Surveillance06:29 The Impact of Social Media on Society07:33 The Coercion of Media and Politics08:37 The Evolution of SELF: Personal Privacy Filter09:50 The Demand for Privacy in AI Tools10:50 The Future of Privacy: Self-Sovereign Mechanisms11:47 The Physicality of Data Privacy12:37 The Ineffectiveness of GDPR13:09 The Dark Side of Data Exploitation14:53 The Post-COVID Awareness Shift34:02 Ethics in Technology37:28 The Problem with Modern Democracy39:18 The Importance of Critical Thinking39:58 The Role of Media in Critical Thinking42:30 Education and Critical Thinking46:15 Ethical Issues in AI and Media46:41 The Dystopian Future of AI53:37 Building Ethical Technology01:04:36 Personal Reflections and Advice01:11:08 Quickfire - Get To Know Jonathanbusinesswithoutbullshit.meWatch and subscribe to us on YouTubeFollow us:InstagramTikTokLinkedinTwitterFacebookIf you'd like to be on the show, get in contact - mail@businesswithoutbullshit.meBWB is powered by Oury Clark
Welcome to episode #981 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Donald Miller is one of the most influential voices in modern marketing - a bestselling author, business strategist, and the creative force behind StoryBrand (a framework that has reshaped how leaders and organizations communicate). In our conversation, Donald breaks down the timeless power of story and why clarity - not cleverness - is the most underrated competitive advantage in business today. His new book, Building a StoryBrand 2.0 - Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen, expands on his original seven-part storytelling framework with sharper tools and practical applications for the modern marketer. Donald is also the author of several bestselling books, including the spiritual memoir Blue Like Jazz, the personal development reflection Scary Close, and A Million Miles In A Thousand Years (loved that one!), alongside business classics like Marketing Made Simple, Business Made Simple, Coach Builder, How to Grow Your Small Business, which have collectively shaped how individuals and organizations think about story, purpose, and growth. We explore why curiosity is the secret starting point in every great customer journey, how AI is accelerating both efficiency and confusion in marketing, and why simple messages are often the hardest to write. Donald also opens up about the creative process behind writing, how to chase ideas worth finishing, and why businesses fail not from a lack of creativity - but from poor communication. Whether you're leading a brand, launching a product, or refining your personal pitch, this conversation is a masterclass in messaging. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 55:49. Sporting Kansas City has now extended their losing streak to 9 straight games in all competitions stretching back to last year as they were unable to find a goal while up a man for over 40 minutes against San Jose in Children's Mercy Park last Saturday night, in front of the first home opener non-sell out in the venue's history. There are a lot of (candidly)reasonable opinions asking for patience with this team due to the circumstances it is in through the 4 games played this year, but given the recent history, it is not surprising to find that most fans have run out of it, hence the empty seats you could too easily see in the stadium Saturday night. Too many familiar themes reared their ugly heads during this match, and it is difficult to look at the performances on the field so far and come to the conclusion that some significant change in fortunes is coming. One of the standout concerns from this game and the others this season has been a prevalence of indecision. This is not a new problem, it has permeated this team for some time now, and it leads to significant errors defensively, and a general feeling of inaction offensively. While you would expect that some of this improves as new players build more time in training together over the coming weeks, it is a familiar refrain that certainly has the members of this podcast questioning if it can be fully remedied with the currently available options on the roster and coaching staff. Finally, the KC Current at long last release their teal kit, The Bartlett Brothers get an opportunity to match up on Saturday, and will Christian Benteke end Robi Voloder's MLS career?
Click here to watch the video version. In this episode of "From Busy to Rich," we're diving back into the discussion where hosts Wes and Andy debunk the idea that more customers are the key to a better advisory practice, instead highlighting the power of referrals. They discuss the ineffectiveness of traditional referral methods, like policy wallets, and the importance of creating a process that naturally attracts clients. The duo acknowledges advisors' skepticism but emphasizes the need for a process that resonates with clients' aspirations, leading to organic referrals and sustainable business expansion. In today's episode we will cover: Misconception among advisors about acquiring more customers Emphasizing the importance of referrals as a trustworthy source of leads Ineffectiveness of traditional referral methods in today's business environment Importance of creating a process that attracts clients rather than asking for referrals Measuring meaningful indicators for success Concept of becoming better rather than just getting bigger Skepticism about clients coming to advisors Challenge of shifting focus from traditional methods to creating an attractive process We hope you enjoy this episode, and we would love to hear your feedback by having you leave a review. Show host Gene Tunny discusses the ineffectiveness of the U.S. debt ceiling, citing its frequent increases and the political grandstanding it entails. He notes that since 1960, Congress has amended the debt limit 78 times. Tunny argues that the debt ceiling does not enforce fiscal discipline and highlights the need for better fiscal rules, such as the Swiss Debt Brake or the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. He also shares his experience with Australia's debt ceiling during the late 2000s financial crisis. Tunny concludes that Trump's criticism of the debt ceiling is justified. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for Gene, please email him at contact@economicsexplored.com.Timestamps for EP268US Debt Ceiling Overview (0:00)Historical Context and Modern Monetary Theory (4:09)Ineffectiveness of the Debt Ceiling (7:07)Australian Experience with the Debt Ceiling (13:00)Conclusion and Alternative Fiscal Rules (24:49)TakeawaysDebt Ceilings Are Ineffective: The US debt ceiling fails to control spending or debt accumulation, as it is consistently raised to avoid financial crises.Alternative Fiscal Rules: Spending caps or frameworks like Switzerland's debt brake are more effective at managing fiscal discipline than nominal debt ceilings.Political Grandstanding: The debt ceiling often serves as a stage for political drama rather than meaningful fiscal reform.Modern Monetary Theory Critique: Printing money to avoid debt constraints, as proposed by some MMT advocates, risks inflation and economic instability.Lessons from Australia: Australia abolished its debt ceiling a decade ago after recognizing its downsides, offering a model for US fiscal policy reform.Links relevant to the conversationUseful information on the US debt and deficit from the US Treasury:https://home.treasury.gov/policy-issues/financial-markets-financial-institutions-and-fiscal-service/debt-limit (discusses how many times the debt ceiling has been amended)https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/americas-finance-guide/national-deficit/ (contains the spending, revenue, and deficit figures that Gene mentions)Lumo Coffee promotion10% of Lumo Coffee's Seriously Healthy Organic Coffee.Website: https://www.lumocoffee.com/10EXPLOREDPromo code: 10EXPLORED Full transcripts are available a few days after the episode is first published at www.economicsexplored.com.

The war on drugs is considered a failure for several key reasons:Ineffectiveness in Reducing Drug Use: Despite decades of effort, drug use and availability have not significantly decreased. The illegal drug market continues to meet demand, demonstrating that supply-side measures alone are insufficient.High Financial Costs: The U.S. spends about $47 billion annually on drug enforcement. This significant investment has not achieved substantial reductions in drug use or drug-related crime, indicating inefficient use of resources. Increased Drug Potency: Prohibition incentivizes the production of more potent drugs, as they are more profitable in an illegal market. This has led to higher rates of overdoses and drug-related deaths, as users seek stronger substances to achieve the same effectsPublic Health Impact: The focus on criminalization over treatment has diverted resources away from public health approaches. This has hindered efforts to provide effective treatment and support for individuals with substance use disorders, resulting in higher rates of addiction and overdose deaths.Continued Violence and Corruption: The illegal drug trade fuels violence and corruption. Cartels and organized crime groups thrive in the illegal market, perpetuating cycles of violence and instability, particularly in drug-producing and transit countries.Ineffectiveness of Interdiction Efforts: Despite extensive efforts to intercept drug shipments, only a small fraction of drugs are seized before reaching consumers. This demonstrates the resilience of drug trafficking networks and the difficulty of disrupting the supply chain. As far as the DEA and their strategy of dealing with Cartels:The DEA's decapitation strategy, aimed at dismantling cartels by targeting their leaders, has largely failed in Mexico due to several key reasons:Fragmentation: Arresting or killing cartel leaders often results in the cartel splitting into smaller, more violent factions. These fragmented groups are less centralized and harder for law enforcement to track and combat.Internal Power Struggles: The removal of top leaders triggers violent power struggles within the cartel as different factions compete for dominance. This increases overall violence and instability.Rapid Replacement: Cartels have hierarchical structures that allow for quick replacement of leaders. New leaders often step in immediately to continue operations, ensuring minimal disruption to the cartel's activities.Diversification and Resilience: Fragmented cartels diversify their criminal activities beyond drug trafficking, engaging in extortion, kidnapping, and other crimes. This diversification makes them more resilient and harder to eradicate.Increased Violence: The decentralization and fragmentation lead to increased violence not only within the cartel but also among rival groups vying for territory and control. This has resulted in higher levels of violence and insecurity in regions affected by cartel operations.Overall, the decapitation strategy has not weakened the overall power of the cartels but has instead led to greater fragmentation, diversification of criminal activities, and increased violence, contributing to instability in Mexico.(commercial at 11:29)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:‘Nada cambia': Mexican drugs lord ‘El Mayo' has been captured, but does targeting kingpins work? | Drugs trade | The Guardian

Dr. Steven Gundry discusses the importance of gut health and its connection to longevity. He explains how the gut microbiome and the gut wall play a significant role in overall health and disease prevention. Dr. Gundry also highlights the negative effects of certain medications, such as antibiotics and NSAIDs, on gut health. He warns about the dangers of weight loss drugs like Ozempic and emphasizes the importance of maintaining muscle mass for longevity. Additionally, Dr. Gundry shares insights on compounds that promote longevity and gut health, such as urolithin A and fermented foods. He also discusses the benefits of time-restricted eating and the importance of cellular regeneration through autophagy and clearing senescent cells. They also delve into the cell danger theory and the role of mitochondria in sensing and signaling danger. The conversation highlights the impact of a dysbiotic microbiome and leaky gut on chronic cellular defense. Additionally, they discuss the use of NK cells to eliminate senescent cells and the gut-brain connection in hormone production and modulation. The conversation concludes with a discussion on reversing health conditions and building new cells with quality material. Takeaways: The gut microbiome and gut health are crucial for overall health and disease prevention. Certain medications, such as antibiotics and NSAIDs, can negatively impact gut health. Maintaining muscle mass is essential for longevity. Compounds like urolithin A and fermented foods promote gut health and longevity. Time-restricted eating and cellular regeneration through autophagy are beneficial for overall health and longevity. Curcetin and prescription medication have been shown to be ineffective in killing off senescent cells in the brain. Autophagy, or cell recycling, is crucial for proper cell function and repair. The cell danger theory suggests that mitochondria play a role in sensing and signaling danger to other cells. A dysbiotic microbiome and leaky gut can lead to chronic cellular defense and hinder cell repair. NK cells can be used to eliminate senescent cells and improve overall health. The gut microbiome plays a significant role in hormone production and modulation. Taking care of the gut is essential for overall health and can help reverse certain health conditions. Kirsten Morrison (@intuitive_rd on Instagram) joins us this week on the pod to discuss her experience as a former weight loss surgery dietitian. We explore the consequences on physical and mental health, her journey from working in bariatrics to now specializing in intuitive eating, how dietitians often experience their own disordered eating, and the overlap of disordered eating and bariatric surgery. I really appreciate Kirsten's perspective as someone that was closely involved in the weight-loss surgery practice. She and I discuss her firsthand observations on the process and its impact on the patients involved. Whether or not you have had weight-loss surgery or are considering it, I hope you listen to this episode. This is by no means a conversation that spans this entire topic, as we want to have folks on here with lived experience with the surgery soon. But I hope it's an informative and helpful discussion about the realities of weight-loss surgery from the perspective of someone who worked in a clinic. Our goal here is to provide you with the information you need to make an informed, compassionate decision for yourself and your body, always. Tune in to hear more about… Role of a dietitian in clinics offering bariatric surgery and lack of consistent post-operative support for patients Lack of informed consent in weight loss interventions Patients not fully informed about potential side effects and outcomes Pressure to undergo bariatric surgery as the "gold standard" solution Blaming and shaming culture surrounding weight loss efforts Ineffectiveness of weight loss surgeries in some cases Patients not achieving expected weight loss results post-surgery Surgical interventions not addressing underlying issues with food relationships Upgrading surgeries or blaming patients for lack of success Problematic approach of trying to eliminate hunger cues Red flags in trying to suppress a necessary biological cue Negative impact on food relationships and potential for binge eating Restrictive diets post-surgery exacerbating food-related issues How suppressing hunger cues doesn't work in the long run and leads to emotional, mental, and physical struggles The definition of "success" in weight loss surgeries and the misleading statistics often used to measure success Acknowledging privilege, stressing body autonomy, and exploring alternatives such as healing relationships with food and body image Kirsten Morrisson is an Anti-Diet Registered Dietitian and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor.
