“Chemotherapy exposure during the first trimester is contraindicated and increases the risk of spontaneous abortion, fetal death, and major congenital malformations. Second- and third-trimester exposure may affect some body systems still developing and can still result in fetal growth restriction, low birth weight, and preterm labor. Yet, I do want to stress that pregnancy can remain a possibility,” Kelsey Miller, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BC, OCN®, clinical nurse specialist in oncology and infusion therapy at Reading Hospital in West Reading, PA, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS, during a conversation about policies and procedures for pregnancy testing during cancer treatment. Highlights From This Episode “It's really crucial to identify [pregnancy] prior to treatment, as this should be considered a patient safety ‘never' event. We know that exposure to chemotherapy or radiation can cause mutagenic changes in reproductive cells and teratogenic effects in a developing fetus. Women of childbearing potential should have a documented pregnancy test prior to beginning cancer treatment due to the adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiation on a developing fetus.” TS 1:42 “We had a fertility risk checklist that was based off American Society of Clinical Oncology standards, that was not fully operationalized nor built into physician workflows. The checklist was a way of documenting that risks of infertility, fertility preservation, and contraception was discussed, as well as an attestation that referral to a reproductive endocrinologist was made if needed. I had a physician partner at the time who said the only way to get the providers to fill out this checklist is to make it a hard stop, so that's what we did. The fertility risk checklist is now a hard stop by means of an order validation that will pop up when the provider goes to sign the oncology treatment plan, and it will say, ‘Orders cannot be signed unless the fertility risk checklist is complete.'” TS 9:27 “Whenever I develop teams, I like to share a common vision. We're all here for patient safety, and we want to prevent harm by pregnancy screening these patients that could potentially become pregnant during cancer treatment.” TS 13:20 “There's a misconception that all cancer therapy will render patients infertile, and this is not the case. Even though chemotherapy and radiation reduce fertility and may cause premature ovarian failure, many patients still remain fertile. And we know from research that physical intimacy remains important during cancer treatment, and unintended pregnancies may occur.” TS 18:13

To keep on with our Nebraska cases theme, I chose one that I am personally knowledgable about. I have literally been to the scene of this one, before it was actually a scene. This is a story about a woman who married an abusive man and her story ended gruesomely and tragically. I had Big Girl by Kelsey Miller on my TBR pile for a really long time. I even sent out a note a few years (yes YEARS!) ago on social media looking for someone to read it with me, but I didn't get any takers so when Chelsea Levy mentioned this book as being a really important part of her journey to body liberation during an IG live a few months ago, I had to invite her on to discuss it with me and boy am I glad I did! This book is so good. I don't think there is a better memoir that covers intuitive eating out there (correct me if you have another title). Hear all about it in my discussion available for download tomorrow. Here are some of the topics Chelsea and I cover:Chelsea's journey with intuitive eating and body liberationBeing on an intuitive eating journey while pursuing a dietetics certificationWhy Big Girl was important to Chelsea's journey and how Kelsey Miller's experience overlaps with Chelsea's lifeDefining intuitive eatingWhat parts of intuitive eating is Chelsea working on now?The difference in the way that Kelsey approached food versus exerciseA discussion around "reasonable" dietingThe similarities between new diet and new loveDoes our body size have meaning?Mindfulness as a tool for distractionThe ending that wasn't really an endingWhat this book was missing (please write another book Kelsey!!!!)Keep Reading Everyone!Chelsea's LinksWebsiteInstagramFat Girl Book Club LinksPatreonInstagramFearless PodcastingEpisode Book RecommendationsThings No One Will Tell Fat Girls by Jes BakerThe Fat Lady Sings by Cheryl Fuller

Hi lovely listeners, We're coming to you live from VIC Lockdown 159280 (Lockdown 4). We start off by breaking down the Friends reunion. The cast has reunited after 17 years in a movie-length show on HBO Max/ Binge. We discuss the valid criticism of the show, why the ageist comments towards the cast are wrong and our personal highlights. Jasmine references her own Fashion Journal article Niche Shows Worth Watching For The ’90s Fashion Alone as well as this Vox article titled Friends Is 25 years old. It's Still Extremely Popular - And Polarizing by Kelsey Miller. In some positive environmental news, eight teenagers and an 86-year-old nun have successfully found that the Environment Minister Sussan Ley has a duty of care towards young Australians. We discuss if this is meaningful or more lip service. Then it's time to put on your critical thinking caps because we discuss this sociology theory that's (strangely) been popping up on our social media feeds lately. An extract from Marilyn Frye's 1983 work The Politics of Reality asks if heterosexual male culture is actually male-loving. Jasmine references this TikTok as well as Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory.Maggie recommends Dina Litovsky's photojournalism work of Amish communities while Jas recommends a piece of long-form journalism by American writer Barrett Swanson titled The Anxiety of Influencers for Harper's magazine. There's also a podcast format if you'd prefer to listen to his discussion! That's all for now, folks. Chat to you next week and stay safe, Victoria. Jas and Mags xoxo
Germany's first direct power link with Norway, called NordLink, has officially opened. The cable under the North Sea will provide enough renewable hydroelectric power for 3.6m households. Sven Egenter is editor in chief of the news service Clean Energy Wire in Berlin, and tells us how the Nordlink cable will work. Also in the programme, following the deaths of more than 315,000 people from coronavirus, India could fast track the clearance of some foreign vaccines in a bid to speed up vaccination in the country. The BBC's Rahul Tandon has an extended report on how the country's rollout is going so far. The BBC's Theo Leggett visits plane engine maker Rolls Royce, which is inaugurating the world's biggest engine testbed in its home town of Derby in the English Midlands. Plus, as the cast of TV sitcom Friends reunite for a one-off special to look back at the making of the show, we discuss why it remains so popular, with Pete Allison, host of the Friends with Friends podcast, and Kelsey Miller, author of I'll Be There for You: The One about Friends. The body positivity movement has been extremely important in combatting our country's fatphobia and teaching us all to love our bodies just as they are. Kelsey Miller, founder of "The Anti-Diet Project," is this week's guest and joins us to explain “How Whiteness Killed the Body Positive Movement.” Miller shares her learning journey about white privilege and intersectionality and she says the body positivity movement must heed the work and labor of Black fat positive activists in order to keep the movement growing. We also chat with Elijah Li, founder of SOULE magazine and the SOULE Foundation about why it's important for Black LGBTQ+ folks to see reflections of themselves in a world that is both anti-Black and anti-queer.

This week on the Pop Life Podcast: Robbie Robertson says his “personal big bang” came with the discovery of rock and roll. An even bigger bang came when the teenaged Robertson saw Rompin’ Ronnie Hawkins, a flamboyant, ex-pat Southern American rock-a-billy musician playing in Toronto. The music, a frenetic blend of rock and roll and hopped-up country music, expertly played by a band that included drummer Levon Helm, spoke to Robertson, revealing an aural passageway to a world he had only ever read about. Eventually, at age sixteen, he joined the band, a move that set on the path to helping to shake things up musically by taking Bob Dylan electric, and form a band that melded Hank Williams, Muddy Waters with roots music into something that had never been heard before. When The Band played together, fan Bruce Springsteen says, “something happened that couldn’t happen on their own. Something miraculous.” Then the “Pop Life” panel, Kelsey Miller, author of “I’ll Be There For You: The One About Friends,” Steve Jordan, founder and Executive Director of the Polaris Music Prize and Wesley Williams (aka Maestro Fresh Wes), the “godfather of Canadian hip hop,” got together to discuss how to define a disruptor in the arts and what it is like to be a game changer.

Friends was created by three ex-New Yorkers who remembered what it was like when they were trying to navigate an uncertain future after college when friends were family. We’ll take you behind the scenes as creators put together the cast and prepared for the pilot episode which aired on September 22, 1994. We’ll look at all of the ways that Friends impacted culture, from fashion and music to the legendary Rachel haircut. We’ll also talk to author Kelsey Miller about the surprising impact that Friends has had on people around the world who have learned to speak English by watching the show. This week, I talked to Kelsey Miller, a writer, editor, and speaker based in Brooklyn. She’s the author of the new book I’ll Be There For You, a fascinating historical deep dive on the show “Friends.” She also launched the Anti-Diet Project at Refinery29 and subsequently wrote a memoir, Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting & Got A Life. She’s written for publications like Glamour, Vulture, Cup of Jo, and Entertainment Weekly, and on the show she talks about: -Fighting the urge to say yes to every single offer out of fear that it’ll be the last one you'll ever get (it won’t be) -Why it might be worth it to hire a lawyer to look at your first few contracts -How to write to-do lists you'll actually feel good about -And why you should always, always ask "stupid" questions So. Much. Great. Stuff. Here. You don't want to miss this one. Kelsey Miller, author of the 5-year column "The Anti-Diet Project" on Refiner29, and force behind The 67 Percent Project, joins me for a chat about all things real life, and Not dieting. Kelsey shares the moment, "somewhere between an epiphany and a panic attack," when she decided to be done with dieting. And from there, what's next? An eating coach, the Intuitive Eating book, writing her memoir (see below), and how life can be hard, either way. We also touch on representation in pop culture, and a different way to look at some of our favorite shows (again!), a la her newest book. "It’s so amazing that you can put on a song and it takes you back to a moment in time. And then that moment can become a different moment. I’m revisiting my interview with Kelsey Miller, author of Big Girl. We chat about her journey out of disordered eating, what she learned about herself from giving up dieting and how she moved from the role of sidekick to leading lady in her life and I’ll be answering a listener question on what to do if you’re afraid of people judging your weight gain. In this episode, we chat about: - I answer a listener question what to do if you’re afraid of people judging your weight gain, - How Kelsey’s first extreme diet at the age of 11 planted the seed and kept her hooked on “the manic power of skinny” for years, - How the pattern of being in the “zone” of a new diet followed by periods of crushing shame kept her trapped in the dieting cycle for years, - The influence of Kelsey’s mom on her relationship with food and her body, - The point when Kelsey realized she was done with dieting and self-loathing and ready to choose living, - What it was like to become an intuitive eater, - The real issue that was at the heart of Kelsey’s disordered relationship with food and how this impacted the rest of her life, - How she stopped playing the sidekick and took the leading lady role in her life, - What Kelsey’s imperfect relationship with her body is like now, Plus so much more!
It's a rarity to have a repeat guest on the podcast, when someone returns it means I especially love talking with them. Kelsey's first time on the podcast (her very first podcast!) was in 2015 when her first book, her memoir Big Girl came out, then she was was one of the panelists on my firs live podcast episode in 2016, and now she's back with her newest book a retrospective on the show Friends called I'll Be There For You: The One About Friends. We obviously gush about our love and experience with Friends and how much I loved her book, but we also talk about where she is now in her life. Since she last did the podcast she got married and left her full time writing position at Refinery 29, so I asked her relationship and freelance advice. Recently she ended the column she founded at Refinery 29, The Anti-Diet Project which chronicled her experience, and the experience of others (including this essay I wrote) with intuitive eating and giving up dieting, so I asked her where she is with all of that now. Kelsey is eloquent, dynamic, and oh so articulate so I always love chatting with her and especially loved this conversation, which ranged from friendship to her writing strategies. Everyone's talking about Kanye's nutty meeting with Trump in The Oval Office last week; whilst Melania, in her most frank televised interview yet, described herself as the most bullied person in the world. Meanwhile, Fendi has made a £750 scarf which looks like a vulva (transcendental experience of being ‘born again' presumably baked in to the price), the Duchess of Sussex is having a baby and we discuss the juiciest tidbits of the 850-guest royal wedding that we both, accidentally, got really quite into. Also this week we discuss why 1/3 of Gen Z don't drink (and interview two Gen Z authors Scarlett Curtis and Charly Cox about their differing attitudes to alcohol) and some brilliant pieces of journalism this weekend by Josh Glancy and Max Hastings, that discuss how feelings have trumped rational thought. Is The Enlightenment's 300-year intellectual tenure under threat? And what are the dangers of placing heart and gut above facts and mind? Clare Sheehan started an Instagram account about a year ago to document her journey in recovery and discovering body positivity. In this episode of Nutrition Matters Podcast, she shares her personal story of becoming body positive and the complexities and struggles in her ongoing journey. Clare talks about how her definition of body positivity has changed throughout the years and months of diving into the research, culture and movement behind it. She shares how growing up in a larger body and the associated stigma affected her life, self-love and her approach to food and her body and talks about what has helped her progress in her own personal journey. HEY OH! I can’t wait to introduce you to this week’s guest, because she’s someone I’ve followed for years, she’s one of the people who originally got me interested in intuitive eating, health at every size and non diet approaches to health and nutrition. Kelsey Miller is senior features writer for Refinery 29 in New York where she writes the column the Anti Diet Project which is all about intuitive eating, body image, and sane fitness. She’s also the author of 'Big Girl:How I Gave up Dieting and Got a Life'. And today we talk a little about her intuitive eating journey and how it’s really hard so don’t buy into the BS on Instagram where bloggers are like, I used to eat clean but now I eat intuitively without any concept of what it actually means (or any carbs on their plate. We also talk about how to be an advocate for body positivity from a place of thin privilege, we talk about recognising other types of privilege in the body positivity space and how unless you’re talking about intersectionality, then you’re kinda part of the problem. And she also gives a lot of great advice about how to get more comfortable with your body and spoiler; it involves getting out of your comfort zone. Really love this conversation. Download Episode! Hey there, distinguished radicals - it's podcast time! In this week’s episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, you’ll hear me talk to Kelsey Miller from Brooklyn, New York. Kelsey graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor's degree in Film & Television. She began her career in the film production industry before transitioning to full-time writing. Soon after joining the staff of the online magazine Refinery29, she created The Anti-Diet Project, one of the website's most popular franchises. She is currently a Senior Features Writer and of course she is the author of the wonderful memoir "Big Girl". Kelsey shares her story with us, and you’ll hear: – How old she was when she became convinced that there was something "wrong" with her body – How her mother related to her body and weight – How early she started restricting food and trying to become skinnier – How easy kids pick up even indirect comments about food and weight and internalize them – How her dream of becoming an actor was being put under the condition that she loses weight, and how that kicked off years of her trying to starve herself into some arbitrary ideal – Why, for so many people, the first diet-success (the high of getting compliments and being applauded for the effort) becomes the carrot they end up chasing for decades – Why people innocently end up sacrificing their self-esteem, their values, the full experience of life and their peace of mind – How she ended up with a black or white, on/off mindset regarding food and exercise – Why re-learning to relate to movement without obsessing/counting/tracking is equally important as developing a normal relationship to food – Why it often takes hearing or reading about someone else’s struggles to wake us up out of our own trance – Why dieting and over-exercising are often ways of distracting ourselves from self-exploration – When and how she finally realized what her being stuck in dieting actually cost her – What happened when she decided to let go of this body-loathing way of escaping her own life – How, at first, she was at a complete loss of how to proceed, since all she knew was dieting – How she realized that "Intuitive Eating” would be her life-saver – Why "true permission to eat" turned out to be the key to healing – How re-learning to trust our body’s signal is an ongoing process – What the issues were that came up after she stopped escaping from them by her dieting behaviors – Why denial plays a huge part in someone's obsession with weight, food and exercise – How her hard work on her deeper issues really paid out for her – How her relationship developed through her process with giving up her weight-obsession – Why accepting love when you don’t love YOURSELF first is extremely difficult and uncomfortable – Why becoming vulnerable and honest towards a partner is so crucial in a relationship – Why it is so important to start challenging our own internal thoughts and beliefs – Why representation of "real" bodies matters so much and what she does to make this more of a reality – When to address someone else’s bias and when to let the ball drop – How family and friends reacted when her book came out – What she has to say to you if you are on the fence of writing about your journey... ...And so much more! Kelsey Miller visits Perfectly Healthy And Toned Radio to discuss her book, "Big Girl" At twenty-nine, Kelsey Miller had done it all: crash diets, healthy diets, and nutritionist-prescribed "eating plans," which are diets that you pay more money for. She'd been fighting her un-thin body since early childhood, and after a lifetime of failure, finally hit bottom. No diet could transform her body or her life. There was no shortcut to skinny salvation. She'd dug herself into this hole, and now it was time to climb out of it. With the help of an Intuitive Eating coach and fitness professionals, she learned how to eat based on her body's instincts and exercise sustainably, without obsessing over calories burned and thighs gapped. But, with each thrilling step toward a healthy future, she had to contend with the painful truths of her past

I know that the title of this podcast is long. And I wanted to make it 20 times longer, because we covered so much great stuff in this episode. This week, I’m talking to Kelsey Miller. She’s a senior writer at Refinery 29, creator of The Anti-Diet Project, and author of the new book, Big Girl: […]
I chat with Kelsey Miller – Creator of The Anti-Diet Project at Refinery29 and Author of Big Girl – on her journey out of disordered eating, what she learned about herself from giving up dieting and how she moved from the role of sidekick to leading lady in her life. In this episode, we chat about: • How Kelsey's first extreme diet at the age of 11 planted the seed and kept her hooked on “the manic power of skinny” for years • How the pattern of being in the “zone” of a new diet followed by periods of crushing shame kept her trapped in the dieting cycle for years • The influence of Kelsey's mom on her relationship with food and her body • The point when Kelsey realized she was done with dieting and self-loathing and ready to choose living • What it was like to become an intuitive eater • The real issue that was at the heart of Kelsey's disordered relationship with food and how this impacted the rest of her life • How she stopped playing the sidekick and took the leading lady role in her life • What Kelsey's imperfect relationship with her body is like now • Plus so much more!
