https://notesonfilm1.com/2025/04/18/jose-arroyo-in-conversation-with-diego-cepeda-on-outskirts/ I recently discovered the existence of a new and exciting film magazine: OUTSKIRTS. It's in English, though mostly written by people for whom English is a second language or who don't speak English at all: translation, in multiple senses, is an integral part of the magazine. It's a handsome physical object, originating in the Locarno Critics Academy but speaking a different film culture, off-centre, from the margins or the periphery. In this podcast I talk to one of the editors, Diego Cepeda (the others are Nathan Latoré, Sofie Cato Maas, Raymond Shik and Christopher small), with filmmaker/critic Felix Cordero Bello contributing illuminating contexts and asides. Near the beginning of the podcast Diego cites a poem by Farid Ud-din Attar, ‘The birds had departed towards a distant luminosity that attracted them. Those who did not perish on the way would understand upon arrival that they had been transformed into that light that now attracted others'. OUTSKIRTS is a magazine that is itself, embodies, a romance of movies, film culture, film history, woven through with friendship. It aims to put at the centre marginalised filmmakers and film cultures; and asks its readers to slow down, look back, look deeply, and think. The launch of each issue is accompanied by live events, often including readings and screenings. Diego cites Abraham Polonsky at the end, ‘The only fights worth fighting are for lost causes'. Speaking to Diego and Felix, in English, a second language for them, a whole cinema culture comes alive. They cite LA VIDA UTIL and Lucía Salas as an inspiration: a spirit of sharing knowledge, friendship and dialogue, enthusiasm for cinema, a similar way of thinking about film history. Diego and Felix both also write for Simulacro magazine edited by Julia Scrive-Loyer (https://www.simulacromag.com/) participate in its weekly cine-club and are connected to the Chavón School of Film and Design, itself associated with Parsons, with Diego as one of its key lecturers. ‘How can we approach the history of images and sounds from a place that maybe didn't have (a film industry) but we have to create tools for understanding those elements that did exist (newsreels, home movies, a rich culture of filmgoing)', says Diego. The conversation ranges from the origins of the magazine, it's aims (to defend cinema from this place, that is on the margins), it's focus (to shine a light on the overlooked), how each issues tries to create a thread of thought. We detour through a brief account of a history of cinema in the Dominican Republic, where the conversation took place. All this and much more can be listened to in the podcast below: The new issue comes out in June and can be purchased at: https://outskirtsmag.com/

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Meet Cassidy & Zeek!Cassidy and Zeek started their journey together in Florida. Cassidy's originally from Maryland but moved to Fort Myers in 8th grade. Zeek is a Florida native, born and raised in the Bonita Springs area. Three years ago, these two lovebirds packed up and moved to the Dominican Republic (DR) with the Christian Missionary Alliance, where they've been sharing their faith, connecting with locals, and building up communities ever since.Discovering the Dominican RepublicThe Dominican Republic's history is rich and layered, beginning as the first European colony in the Americas. Santo Domingo, its capital, was founded in 1496 and is recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the New World. This city became a critical base for Spanish exploration, and remnants of its colonial past remain in the cobblestone streets and preserved buildings of its Zona Colonial. Over the centuries, the DR has seen periods of Spanish, French, and Haitian rule, each leaving a distinct mark on its culture. The nation gained its independence in 1844, and since then, its resilient spirit has shaped a unique identity celebrated in its music, art, and traditions. Today, the Dominican Republic thrives as a vibrant blend of European, African, and Taíno influences, with a deep sense of pride in its cultural heritage and historical significance in the Caribbean. And if you love music, this is the birthplace of merengue and bachata—two energetic styles that will get you dancing in no time. What's the DR Really Like? When we asked Cassidy and Zeek how they'd sum up the DR in just three words, they said it's friendly, hot, and adventurous! The island's unique mix of rich history, lively music, and breathtaking natural beauty makes it an unforgettable place to live and explore.Best Time to VisitWhile it's a paradise year-round, Cassidy and Zeek recommend avoiding the rainy season. For the ultimate tropical experience, head over between October and July. HolidaysTwo major holidays in the DR are Mother's Day and Black Friday because the Dominicans love to shop. If you happen to visit on these days, get your shopping in! If you are a Carnival fan, it usually occurs between February and April. The DR's primary religion is Catholicism so there are also many holidays centered around it.Must-Visit CitiesThe DR's capital city, the largest city, Santo Domingo, is a must-visit! Known as the oldest city in the New World, it's filled with colonial architecture and historical sites, including the first cathedral in the Americas, Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor. Check out the old fort walls in the colonial zone. For a taste of Santo Domingo, try the chocolate-making tour, where you can explore the history of the Cacao bean and the different percentages of chocolates, and you get to make your own chocolate bar. For a scenic stroll, walk on the Malecon oceanside walkway, where you can see the ocean, shop from local vendors, and enjoy live music. The city of Santiago de los Caballeros is another gem with a thriving cultural scene. It is a smaller city with friendlier people, and similar to Santo Domingo, it has mountains, beaches, and good food. Santo Domingo and Santiago are a 4-hour drive from each other. La Romana is known for its luxury resorts, golf courses, and the nearby Altos de Chavón, a recreated Mediterranean-style village.Outdoor Exploring Like a LocalBeaches: Punta Cana is famous for its resorts and beaches, which make it a top tourist destination. However, there are many less crowded beaches, such as Las Terrenas, Cabarete, and Puerto Plata, on the northern coast, and Juan Dolio on the southern coast. Las Terrenas is on the northeastern coast, and it is Cassidy and Zeek's favorite with its crystal clear water and perfect palm trees. Cabarete is a vibrant boho surfer beach. Playa Rincon and Bahia de Las Aguilas offer some of the most pristine beaches.Hiking: If you're up for an adventure, try canyoning at El Tabernaculo. This is a must-hike, and you can slide down mini waterfalls. This hike is only about 2 hours long. Another incredible hike is Venti siete Saltos at the Damajagua Waterfalls. Here you can hike a trail up to the top of the mountain and you can float down a river, jumping off 27 rock sections into the next water pool. You can also choose whether you want to do a beginner, intermediate, or expert trek. Salto de Jimenoa. Pico Duarte is the highest peak in the Caribbean, standing at 10,164 feet (3,098 meters). You can sign up for a guided camping trip up the mountain, and the views and natural beauty is stunning. What to PackBring your camera! Essentials to Pack: Don't forget the sunscreen, bug spray, and a good pair of hiking shoes if you want to explore beyond the beach!Where to Stay In Santo Domingo, The Embassy Suites is only $130 a night and is much more luxurious than embassy suites in the US. There are many unique historic hotels in the colonial zone. From here you can always have easy access to the happenings of the town such as shopping, events, music and food.Fun Culture Facts!Savoring the FlavorsCassidy and Zeek raved about the food, and we're here for it! Dominican cuisine is a blend of Spanish, African, and Taíno influences, with dishes like mangu (mashed plantains) and la bandera (a hearty plate of meat, rice, and beans). Some favorite Santo Domingo restaurants of Cassidy and Zeek include El Conuco, Osteria del Cappuccino, and La Tapa. Osteria del Cappuccino is an authentic Italian restaurant, and it is so tasty that it is endorsed by the Italian embassy! La Tapa has many options, great steaks, and excellent drinks. Keep in mind water is more expensive than liquor in the DR! El Conuco is a traditional Dominican restaurant located closer to the colonial district. El Conuco is a famous celebrity spot with the citations of Selena Gomez and Brad Pitt, and it hosts live merengue music in the evenings and weekends. Don't even get us started on the coffee—locally grown and deliciously rich, it's a must-try for every coffee lover. Their favorite coffee shop is The Greenhouse. A popular drink in the DR is a mochaccino. Be careful when ordering a Machiatto because, unlike Starbucks, it is an extremely concentrated expresso drink.Travel on Any Budget! The DR has options for every budget. A week's trip could be affordable with plenty of local eats and budget, or if you're feeling bougie, there are tons of all-inclusive resorts and fine dining options, especially around Punta Cana and La Romana.Memorable Moments and What's NextCassidy and Zeek have countless stories to share from their time in the DR, from helping communities to wild "off-the-beaten-path" treks. As they wrap up their time in the DR, they're looking forward to their next destination: Mexico! But if you want to connect with them before they go, follow @_CassidyMarquez on Instagram to chat more about their mission work with the Christian Missionary Alliance. To help Cassidy and Zeek on their next adventure to bring healing and the Gospel and aid to Mexico, click HERE.So, Travel Brats, if the DR isn't already on your travel list, Cassidy and Zeek's stories might just convince you that they should be. Whether you're a beach bum, a history buff, or a foodie, the Dominican Republic has something for everyone!

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 30, 2024 is: syncretism • SING-kruh-tiz-um • noun Syncretism refers to the combining of different forms of belief or practice. // As a scholar of religion, Laila is especially interested in the syncretism of Manichaeism, which was influenced by Christianity, Buddhism, and Zoroastrianism. See the entry > Examples: "Explore the archaeological wonders of Chavín de Huantar, where history comes alive. This village, steeped in cultural richness, provides a journey into Peru's ancient past. 'The village of Chavín de Huántar is an example of how tourism can foster syncretism between religious traditions and ancestral cultural elements, generating experiences with a positive impact for the population and improving the quality of life of its residents,' said the UNWTO [United Nations World Tourism Organization]." — Laura Begley Bloom, Forbes, 26 Nov. 2023 Did you know? The ancient Greeks used the term synkrētismos to refer to Cretan cities allied in opposition to a common enemy. In the early 17th century, English speakers adopted the term in the anglicized form syncretism to refer to the union of different religious beliefs. Three centuries later, lexicographers of the 1909 edition of Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language added a new definition of syncretism ("the union or fusion into one or two or more originally different inflectional forms, as of two cases"), but this specialized sense is rarely encountered outside of the field of linguistics. Some related terms that you are more likely to encounter are syncretize ("to attempt to unite and harmonize"), syncretist ("one who advocates syncretism"), and syncretic and syncretistic ("characterized or brought about by syncretism").

Scientists Found Oldest Village in Europe Surrounded by Spikes

Scientists have discovered what they believe to be the oldest village in Europe, and it has a unique twist—it was surrounded by wooden spikes! This ancient village, which could be nearly 7,000 years old, was likely built with these spikes, or palisades, as a form of protection. Archaeologists think the spikes were put up to keep out wild animals or other tribes, making it one of the earliest examples of village defense. The settlement shows how early humans started forming communities with safety in mind. It's incredible to think that so long ago, people were already working together to create secure, organized living spaces. This find gives us a glimpse into life in ancient Europe and shows just how clever early humans were at protecting themselves. In this episode, Yo celebrates Labor Day, the national holiday in the U.S. that remembers all those that have contributed  and when she thought about what leaders best represented the American labor movement she was drawn to the efforts of Cesar Chavez, maybe it was because Chavez was her maiden name, or that he resembled her own father's looks, or that SJSU has a monument to the man in the center of campus that calls to her whenever on campus, or that she boycotted grapes for years when growing up, or joined her dad as a very young girl, like 6 years old, on the picket line when LAUSD teachers were striking in 1960. She talked the idea of the episode over with one of her trusted advisors, her millennial daughter, Emma, who said, why do Cesar? Why don't you do Dolores Huerta – tell her story as the female who took the lead alongside Cesar? After all, Dolores did everything that Cesar did – but she did it while raising 11 children! So the episode was born and research began. 3 Episode Takeaways: 1.   Dolores was a tireless advocate for the rights of farmworkers, children, immigrants, and others. 2.   It was her words “Si, se puede” (Yes, we can) that became the rallying for the farmworker's movement and was later borrowed by Barack Obama during his election campaign. 3.   She was fierce negotiator, the first non-lawyer, Latina,   As Mentioned in the Episode: Huelga, Dolores Huerta Stands Strong by Marlene Targ Brill Cesar Chavez, Autobiography of La Causa by Jacques E. Sound on! From conch shells to bone flutes, humans have been making musical instruments for tens of thousands of years. What did prehistoric music sound like? In an episode originally published in November 2021, follow us on a journey to find the oldest musical instruments and combine them into one big orchestra of human history. For more information on this episode, visit natgeo.com/overheard. Want More? A conch is more than just a musical instrument. A mollusk lives in that shell, and it's a staple food in the Bahamas—so much so that overfishing is threatening their existence, but a few simple solutions may solve the problem. The oldest musical instrument was once thought to be a cave bear bone flute made by Neanderthals, but recent evidence suggests that the holes were made by animals rather than tools. More information about each instrument: The organization First Sounds found and brought to life the recordings of Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville.

It all begins with a sea creature—a snail called a conch—and the mathematically perfect spiral it transforms into a home, which we humans then put to our lips and play like a trumpet. Throughout time and cultures, conch shells have been used to communicate across great distances, from signaling on the battlefield to connecting with the divine. Hear stories about a jazz musician who plays the conch to connect with his ancestors, why a sacred Incan site way up in the Andes became a ceremonial conch concert hall, and how a conch shell made its way from the depths of the ocean to echoing through the Great Hall of The Met. Guests: Bradley Strauchen-Scherer, curator, Musical Instruments, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Markus Sesko, associate curator of Asian arms and armor, Arms and Armor, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Steve Turre, master jazz trombonist and seashellist Jim Waterman, founder and owner of Shell World Miriam A. This week we are rebroadcasting our interview with Ruth Łchav'aya K'isen Miller, originally aired in September of 2021. “If this new green economy continues to perpetuate the same ethos that resource extraction has, we will not find any solutions and we will see our suffering perpetuated.” Heeding this call from Ruth Łchav'aya K'isen Miller, we explore the fruitful spaces between radical imagination, public policy, and on-the-ground activism as we think about what it means to take meaningful steps towards creating a non-extractive future. In this week's episode, Ruth shares how tending to the future must center Indigenous values and lifeways. With this in mind, we look at the totality of what a “just transition” can offer us beyond limited definitions shaped by economics, policy, and job growth. Instead, Ruth shares the ways in which a just transition can be understood as a cyclical movement inspired by kinship, care, and reciprocity.  Ruth Łchav'aya K'isen Miller is a Dena'ina Athabaskan and Ashkenazi Russian Jewish woman, raised in Dgheyay Kaq (Anchorage), Alaska. She is a member of the Curyung Tribe from the Lake Clark region and also has roots in Bristol Bay. Ruth is the Climate Justice and Just Transition Director for Native Movement, a matriarchal grassroots Indigenous organization that fights for the rights of Indigenous peoples. She has worked many years towards climate justice and a regenerative economy for all on her lands and beyond, her work also includes international advocacy. She is a daughter, a granddaughter, an aunty, a language learner, a traditional beadworker, and a subsistence fisherwomxn. Music by Madelyn Ilana, Høly River, and Mariee Sioux.  Visit our website at forthewild.world for the full episode description, references, and action points.
