God's Word for Today 17 Jul, 2024 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” 11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. -Mark 11:7-11 ESV HOSANNA! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD! They brought the donkey to Jesus. They throw their cloaks on it before Jesus sits on it. This has prophetic symbolism [Zech 9:9]. Why He rides on a donkey not a horse. In that era, donkeys were exclusively used for work, whereas horses were more frequently used for war. Rather than entering the city on a horse, like a military conqueror, Jesus arrives on a donkey. This is somewhat like the difference between a modern person riding into town in the back of a pickup truck, as opposed to an armored personnel carrier. Take note, Jesus is going to finish His work at Calvary. As Jesus entered into the city, the people started praising God and laying their cloaks on the road and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. "Leafy branches" is from the Greek root word ‘stibas' and can mean branches with leaves or rushes. Interestingly, John also mentions that the people used palm branches (John 12:13). But, palms are not native to Jerusalem. This implies the people brought them, on purpose and in advance, from Jericho. Everyone from behind and ahead is shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” Hosanna is a Hebrew term. It's a cry of praise or a prayer for salvation. To come "in the name of the Lord" is to come in God's authority, with His permission and purpose. These two phrases are each the first phrases of Psalm 118:25 and 26, respectively. This is known as the thanksgiving Psalm. The people are rightly celebrating that the Jewish Messiah has finally arrived. But, they are incorrect. They assume that His purpose is to rescue Israel from the Roman oppressors. Jesus is surrounded by a mob celebrating that He has come to re-establish the kingdom of David (Mark 11:10). Indeed, it's no exaggeration to say the triumphal entry has accelerated the plans to kill Jesus. The religious leaders are concerned and jealous since this event clearly established Him as a "problem" which would never go away. But far from what they expect, Jesus is not concerned for the Jewish crowd to be saved from Rome. But, He came to save them from their sins which will lead them to eternal damnation. The crowds heard Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, they came out to see Jesus and Lazarus, and praise broke out! but the leaders want to kill both Jesus and Lazarus. So we get caught up in the celebration but there is a dark undertone to the parade. We know what's coming. Recorded live at Word of Life Church in Le Sueur, Minnesota, on March 24, 2024, Pastor Jason Lang preaching
We are going to take a break from the book of Psalms for the next eight days and share the events in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ in what is called “Passion Week”. It is in these eight days that the greatest event in the course of human history takes place, and that is, the suffering, the death, the burial, and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Don't ever forget that Jesus suffered like no man ever suffered as He lays down His life as God's perfect sacrifice for our sins! Actually, if we want to look back one day to Saturday, we will find that the Lord Jesus was anointed with oil by Mary. “And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table” (Matt. 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-8). She was criticized by Judas and the disciples, but Jesus said, “She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her." (Mark 14:8-9). Jesus knew exactly what was going to take place in the course of this week! What a great place to start these devotions this week. We should be encouraged to know that the Lord takes great note of our sacrificial devotion, records it, and will greatly reward it! Today is called Palm Sunday. On this first day of the week, our Lord makes His triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Matt. 21:1-11, 14-17; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:29-44). Luke's Gospel tells us, "Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. (Luke 19:28-31) Mark's Gospel informs us that this colt had never been ridden and it was tied “by the door, without in a place where two ways met.” (Mark 11:2-4). This is a beautiful picture of us as sinners. We are unbroken, rebelling against God, and “tied” to our sins! We are “tied” to our past, our guilt, our addictions, our bitterness and cannot lose ourselves. We need someone, sent by Jesus to tell us the story of His resurrection power and how He needs us to come into His family! Notice the colt was “by the door”! Remember Jesus is the door (John 10:9). The colt was “without”. We are outside the fold of safety. The colt was also “in a place where two ways met.” When we are introduced to Jesus, we are at the crossroad of two ways. We must either choose Jesus, the Narrow Way, or reject Him and continue down the broad way that leads to destruction! When Jesus came into the City of Jerusalem, there was a great celebration by the people! When “much people …. heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem... cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” (John 12:12-13) Both Matthew and Mark's Gospel record this entry: "Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord" "Hosanna to the son of David... Hosanna in the highest" "Blessed is the kingdom that cometh, the kingdom of our father David" (Matthew 21:9; Mark 11:9-10). It is sad to note, that in less than five days later, many in this crowd would be crying “crucify Him”. The last thing we should note that took place on this day is the broken heart of Jesus over the city of Jerusalem. After the Pharisees criticized Jesus for accepting this praise he replied, "I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out." Then Luke also tells us “as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, "If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes….” (Luke 19:40-44). As Jesus faces the suffering of the cross, He is weeping over the lost condition of those who would crucify Him. May the Lord give us broken hearts like Jesus to pray and weep over the lost sinners around us today! God bless!

12:9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. 12:10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; 12:11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. 12:12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 12:13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 12:14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, 12:15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. 12:16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. 12:17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. 12:18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. 12:19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

The Lord Jesus is the King of kings, and Lord of Lords. When He was born, the Bible says, “…there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him” (Matthew 2:1-2). He didn't become a king; He was born a king. In John 18, we find His own testimony when Pilate asked Him, “Art thou a king then?” Jesus responded, “… Thou sayest that I am a king…” (John 18:37). His response meant, “You're right.” He spoke in the affirmative. In fact, in the 39th verse, speaking to the Jews, Pilate confirmed Jesus' affirmation when he said, “…will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?” Had Jesus denied being a King, Pilate wouldn't call Him the King of the Jews. In Acts 2:30, speaking to an audience, Peter said, “Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him (David), that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.” In John 12:13, upon His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the crowds extravagantly honoured Him and praised God for sending this King into Jerusalem. They cried out, “… Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” Of course, the elders of the Jews were offended and told Him to silence those who praised Him and received Him as King (Luke 19:39). But Jesus responded, “…If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers” (Luke 19:40 NLT). In other words, even the stones will affirm the same. Hallelujah! The Lord Jesus is the exalted God, the immortal God, living in unapproachable light of divine glory. There's none like Him. We're not serving a mere religious leader, but one who is King and Monarch of the universe. He has all authority in heaven, in earth, and under the earth. Be unapologetic in your identity with Him, and speak boldly of Him. Glory to His Name forever! PRAYER Dear Lord Jesus, you're the King eternal, immortal, with all power, glory and majesty. You're the joy of heaven and hope of the earth. You're the Most High God, who alone is worthy of all praise, honour and adoration. You're King of the ages. I worship you today and forever. Amen. John Chapter 12:1-25 {12:1} Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. {12:2} There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. {12:3} Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. {12:4} Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's [son,] which should betray him, {12:5} Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? {12:6} This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. {12:7} Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. {12:8} For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. {12:9} Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. {12:10} But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; {12:11} Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. {12:12} On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, {12:13} Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed [is] the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. {12:14} And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, {12:15} Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. {12:16} These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and [that] they had done these things unto him. {12:17} The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. {12:18} For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. {12:19} The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him. {12:20} And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast: {12:21} The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. {12:22} Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus. {12:23} And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. {12:24} Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. {12:25} He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

The Messiah is the firstfruit and firstborn of all creation. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Colossians 1: 16-18 Yeshua is not only the firstborn of all creation, he is also our High Priest. Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4: 14-15 Not only is Yeshua the firstborn of all creation, not only is He the High Priest, but He is also the King of Israel. John 12:12-19 12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, 15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. 16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. 17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. 18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him. ... John 19:14-15; 19-22 14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! 15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews. 20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. ... John 14:1-3 1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Christ the King 1.
