Why palm branches? In this Palm Sunday episode, we dig into the powerful symbolism behind what the crowd did when Jesus rode into Jerusalem — and what it means for us today. Palm branches represented victory, peace, and deliverance, and "Hosanna" was a cry for a King who saves. Jesus came as that King and as the Cornerstone of the Church. Just like everyone within reach could grab a branch that day, we all have something we can lay down to honor Him.
This is message 36 in Gospel Record of John John 12:12-19 Jesus is the true King, but He does not come to fulfill human expectations or earthly ambitions. He comes in humility to bring peace with God, and every person must decide whether to receive Him for who He is or reject Him because He does not fit their desires. Enthusiasm and outward praise are not enough, because a heart that seeks Him only for personal gain will turn away when His purpose leads through sacrifice, while genuine faith recognizes His authority and submits to Him as Lord. Let those palm branches be a sign to you for His victory and claim Jesus is the Messiah by walking in the way of His suffering and His cross. He wins. Jesus wins.

On Palm Sunday, two processions enter Jerusalem, but only one reveals the way to lasting peace. In Luke's surprising version of the story, there's a missing word, a weeping king, and a deeper path that invites us to discover why the door up opens downward. (Luke 19:28-40)

‘All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,‘Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.'—Matthew 21:4 & 5‘Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.'—Zechariah 9:9
In today's episode of the Tiny Theologians Easter series, we begin the story of Easter with Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem and the meaning behind the palm branches. Join TJ and Tory as they imagine the excitement of the crowd welcoming Jesus into the city—waving branches, laying down their cloaks, and shouting “Hosanna!” Along the way, they discover that Jesus is not the kind of king people expected, but the true King God promised. Today's symbol is the palm branches, which remind us that Jesus is our Savior King—the One who came to save His people through His life, death, and resurrection. At Redeemer, our pathway is how we seek to embody our vision and mission, or in other words, put it into practice. We desire every person to enter into intentional apprenticeship to Jesus, to be in a diverse, loving community, and to live in Wichita as witnesses. “The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men and women into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became man for no other purpose.” – CS Lewis At Redeemer, we take seriously Jesus' call to “Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Apprenticeship to Jesus is not a one time decision, but a lifelong journey of following Jesus as our master-teacher. Since the goal of the Christian life is maturity in Jesus, apprenticeship must be deep and holistic, transforming the spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and vocational parts of men and women. Apprenticeship to Jesus is learning to practice the way of Jesus in our homes, relationships, neighborhoods, and jobs. We believe Christlikeness is cultivated as we implement spiritual practices, live in community with other believers, and submit to the Word and the Spirit. We agree with Dallas Willard who said, “that the gospel is opposed to earning, not effort.” As we move towards cultivating a life of loving God and people, we trust Christ will mature us into his likeness. https://redeemerwichita.church/
In this sermon, Pastor Chris Romig centers on the powerful vision in Revelation 7, where a countless, multicultural multitude stands before God's throne. He highlights the wideness of God's mercy and the total absence of racism or ethnic superiority in God's kingdom. This heavenly gathering, composed of those who have come out of the Great Tribulation, is described as joyfully serving God, free from suffering, hunger, or toil. Romig clarifies that the promises of continuous worship and presence in God's "temple" are symbolic, representing unbroken fellowship with God Himself. The focus shifts to the core of Christian hope: the multitude is in heaven not because of their works or effort, but because they have been washed clean by the blood of Christ salvation is entirely by grace. He urges listeners to examine the foundation of their faith, challenging them to answer the question of why God should allow them into heaven. The only true response, he says, is “Jesus died for me.” The sermon concludes by encouraging believers to receive God's love and grace, especially through communion, and to find hope in the assurance of Christ's love and the promise of eternal joy in God's presence.

Join us as we worship the Lord, fellowship together, and begin holy week waving palm branches to our King! The fact that PALM BRANCHES lined the road and were waved at Jesus as He entered Jerusalem to the shouts of 'hosanna!' has profound theological significance. Jesus is our Victor, the long awaited Lamb of God, our Second Adam, and to Him belongs all glory and praise! Let us lay our lives down before our King of kings! Jerusalem, Nazareth circulating
Passion Images: Palm Branches John 12:12-19
Jesus' choice of a donkey as His mode of transportation to enter Jerusalem is significant. Unlike a horse, which symbolizes war and conquest, a donkey represents humility and peace. By riding a donkey, Jesus demonstrated that His kingdom was not of this world. He came not as a conquering warrior but as a humble servant, willing to lay down His life for the salvation of others. His entry into Jerusalem was a powerful reminder that true greatness is found in humility and selflessness.

As we approach Palm Sunday, New Testament scholar Nijay Gupta joins Kaitlyn to answer a pretty important question: why do we wave palm branches? Dr. Gupta gives fascinating historical background on this practice, but he also points us to its theological significance. Palm Sunday. Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. In many churches, we'll wave our palm branches and shout, “Hosanna!” In this week's conversation, Sarah Stenson and Dr. Chris Croghan explain how the crowds believed the Messiah was going to be a king whose power came through the Law. They thought the Messiah would defeat their enemies and make their lives materially better—much like how people view being a Christian today will benefit them. The crowd chants, “Hosanna! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!” They didn't know it, but they were confessing exactly what Jesus was going to do: hosanna means save us. Their ancestor David was a sinner who received God's mercy. Jesus is going to take on all of our sins and be killed. Quite the way to start Holy Week. Psalm, Scripture, and Sermon on John 12 for Palm Sunday.
Have you ever been in a spot where you knew, “Well, it’s too late to turn back now”? The first thing that came to my mind was when I was standing at the end of the aisle in a church full of people all dressed up and the Wedding March began to play and the white dress appeared and began to walk down the aisle toward me. I am sure the feeling was mutual. I have a good friend who was US Army Airborne and he said when you walk up to the door and the green light it on, you just step out into the air. Too late to turn back then for sure. And of course, there are endless examples. But I have one for you that is eternal. Jesus was less than one week out from his crucifixion. He knew it. He was headed to Jerusalem where he would be betrayed, tried, flogged, crucified and buried. He was on a path that was prophesied about hundreds of years before. When it is too late to turn back in your life,…Jesus is there waiting for you. This message discusses the road into Jerusalem and what it means to you and to me and it asks us what the crowd asked about Jesus that very day, “Who is this?” Jesus can turn things around for you because he did not turn around. He faced the cross and continued so that we could live a life eternal.
