In this kickoff live session for our new class on the Holy Spirit, I'm joined by Grace Ji-Sun Kim—author of the Homebrewed Christianity Guide to the Holy Spirit (and about 24 other spirit-focused books by her count!). We dive into some fascinating early questions about the nature of the spirit: Is it a person, principle, or energy? Grace reminds us that confusion is actually a good starting place, since certainty is where problems arise. We explore how her unique background—growing up Korean Presbyterian but exposed to Baptist, Pentecostal, and many other traditions—gave her a perspective that transcends denominational boundaries. Grace shares incredible stories about her unexpected adventure in Rome during the papal conclave (including jumping barriers to chase Pope Leo XIV!), reflecting on how the Spirit moves in ways that challenge patriarchal structures while still working within them. We discuss embodied spirituality, vibrations as divine creation, and how studying the Spirit has transformed Grace's own prayer life. Whether you're Presbyterian, Pentecostal, or somewhere in between, join us as we journey through this four-part exploration of the Holy Spirit leading up to Pentecost! And if you're in North Carolina, come see us live at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chapel Hill at 7pm on June 8th! Solomon's fame spreads throughout the world, so much so that the queen of Sheba comes to hear and see him for herself. She exclaims that Solomon's wisdom and wealth have far surpassed the report and proclaims blessing upon the LORD for the way He has loved His people by giving them a faithful ruler. Solomon's wealth truly was extravagant, not only in gold and silver, but in a wealth of commodities. Despite such prosperity, this chapter continues to reveal Solomon's slow slide away from the LORD, as he fails to live according to the instructions given to kings in Deuteronomy 17. Rev. Phillip Fischaber, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 Kings 10:1-29. To learn more about Holy Trinity Lutheran, visit www.htlcwalnut.org. "A Kingdom Divided” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Kings. The division in the kingdom of Israel in this part of history was greater than a matter of north and south. The biggest division was between the people and their God. Yet even as the people rebelled against the LORD as their King, still He remained faithful to call them back to Himself through His prophets, working through history to send the good and gracious King, Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org
What does a second career journey from the music industry to pastoral ministry look like? The Rev. Paul Hemenway, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Edmond, OK, joins Andy and Sarah for our Set Apart to Serve series to talk about his life prior to his journey to seminary, skills from the music industry that have translated into pastoral ministry, how he finally made his way to seminary, who supported him on this journey, what he loves about being a Lutheran pastor, and words of wisdom and encouragement for others who are considering church work vocations. Christ's church will continue until He returns, and that church will continue to need church workers. Set Apart to Serve (SAS) is an initiative of the LCMS to recruit church workers. Together, we pray for workers for the Kingdom of God and encourage children to consider church work vocations. Here are three easy ways you can participate in SAS: 1. Pray with your children for God to provide church workers. 2. Talk to your children about becoming church workers. 3. Thank God for the people who work in your congregation. This special episode examines the fascinating world of religious relics, focusing on the Shroud of Turin, from a Lutheran point of view. The discussion balances faith, history, and skepticism, questioning whether these artifacts are genuine holy heirlooms or simply surrounded by hype. With thought-provoking insights, this episode offers a Christian perspective on relics and their place in modern Christianity. The Rev. Phillip Fischaber, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Walnut, IL, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study FTFF: Relics.
The prophet continues to preach against the faithless priests who are failing the LORD's people. Although the LORD has called His priests to be purveyors of His life and peace through true sacrifices and right teaching of His Word, His priests have turned aside and caused many to stumble. If they do not turn, these priests will only have curses instead of blessings. Faithlessness in worship has led to faithlessness in life; the prophet also speaks the LORD's Word against those who have married idolaters. Instead of remaining true to their wives who worshiped the true God, the people have sought after divorce, which goes against the LORD's will for His people. The LORD's direct words against His people's sin should not cause us to ignore or despise Him, but rather to listen to Him and know that He speaks His rebuke for our good. Rev. Phillip Fischaber, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Malachi 2:1-16. "The Post-Exilic Prophets” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the books of Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. Through the preaching of these faithful men, the LORD sent His Word to His people who returned home after their exile in Babylon. Not only did the LORD encourage His people in the work of rebuilding the temple, but even more than that, He pointed them forward to the fulfillment of all the Old Testament promises in the coming kingdom of our true King and great High Priest, Jesus Christ.
This special episode explores what it means to live freely in Christ, discussing how this freedom is not a license for self-indulgence but a call to serve others in love. The pastors will examine the delicate balance between liberty and responsibility, illustrating how true Christian freedom empowers believers to live out their faith with joy and purpose. Additionally, they will reflect on how this freedom shapes our daily lives, influencing our decisions, relationships, and overall perspective on life. The Rev. William Cwirla, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hacienda Heights, CA, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to discuss the concept of Christian freedom.
Long lists in the Scriptures may seem unnecessary or uninteresting to modern readers. Yet lists such as the one in this chapter remind us that the LORD works in real history for real people. He knows His people by name, and He is the One who fulfills His promise for them. The initial number of those who returned from exile is rather small, and yet, the LORD was keeping His promise for this remnant. Their concern for genealogy shows a renewed concern for faithfulness to the LORD's Word. Their willingness to give offerings for the rebuilding of the temple shows thankfulness for the LORD's gifts among them. Rev. Phillip Fischaber, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Ezra 2:1-70. "God Brings His People Home” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. After 70 years in exile, the LORD began to fulfill His promise to bring His people back to the Promised Land. In the years that followed, faithful clergy and dedicated laity worked together to rebuild Jerusalem physically and restore the people of God spiritually. Through it all, God was at work to keep His promise of bringing the Savior into the world in the fullness of time.

Puppetry artist Sandy Spieler plans to attend Minneapolis author Patrick Cabello Hansel's book launch Thursday night for his poetry collection, “Breathing in Minneapolis.”The collection arises from the tumultuous events of 2020: the COVID pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, the destruction along Lake Street and the challenges immigrant communities faced. It's Cabello Hansel's third collection, and he draws in part from his work as pastor of a bilingual Spanish-English speaking church in south Minneapolis, from which he recently retired.“These are poems of immediate relevance. Here are poems of hiding, of being torn apart, of mourning, of marching, of anger and ultimately of reverent adoration,” says Spieler, “true to the calling of his holy office.” Poets Joyce Sutphen, Walter Cannon and Dralandra Larkins will also participate in Thursday's reading, along with Chilean musician Ina-Yukka. The event is at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, which Spieler says feels fitting since it served as a medic station during the uprising following George Floyd's murder. Art lover Colette Hyman of Winona attended the opening weekend of the exhibit “Aabijijiwan / Ukeyat yanalleh, It Flows Continuously” at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. The show, which first appeared at All My Relations Gallery in Minneapolis, pairs the textiles of Ojibwe artist Karen Goulet and the photography and collage of Houma artist Monique Verdin. The two artists live at opposite ends of the Mississippi River, and their work explores the health of the water that connects us all.The exhibit includes several collaborations that tie deeply to land and water. There are a series of weavings that the artist buried and later retrieved from various locations along the river, allowing the natural colors of the soil to permeate the work.Hyman also appreciated a “stunning, understated” star quilt Goulet created from cotton dyed by medicine plants grown by Verdin. The light fabric flows and ripples as visitors walk by.The exhibit is on view now through July 7 at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona.Actor and theatermaker Greta Grosch of St. Paul is looking forward to Theatre 55's production of “Cabaret,” opening Friday night.Grosch appreciates Theatre 55's role in the Twin Cities arts scene, mounting iconic musicals with talented actors who have aged out of the roles they previously might have played. Grosch enjoys how they push the envelope of the expected, including “Rent,” “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Hair.” All actors are 55 and older, and the show includes a mix of veteran and amateur performers. She's looking forward to seeing the role of Sally played by Prudence Johnson, whose long career includes appearances on “A Prairie Home Companion.”“Cabaret” runs Feb. 2 – 10 at Mixed Blood Theater in Minneapolis.

The Rev. Phillip Fischaber, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut, IL, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Mark 14:26-52. This passage depicts the poignant moments leading up to Jesus' betrayal and arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. After sharing the Last Supper with his disciples, Jesus foretells Peter's denial and leads them to Gethsemane to pray. Overwhelmed with sorrow, Jesus wrestles with the weight of his impending sacrifice while his disciples struggle to stay awake. Judas arrives, signaling Jesus' arrest with a kiss, leading to a brief but intense moment where a disciple draws a sword in defense, swiftly ended by Jesus. Beneath the fast-paced action of Jesus' ministry in the Gospel of Mark lies a profound theological message: we are all in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. Though Jesus performs mighty deeds and calls people to repent, they repeatedly fail to understand his true identity and mission. Even his disciples abandon him in his darkest hour. Yet Jesus willingly suffers and dies on the cross as a ransom for many, accomplishing what we could not do ourselves - securing our justification before God. Mark presents Jesus not just as a miracle worker but as the divine Savior whose atoning sacrifice makes salvation possible for lost sinners.

Amazon Link Michael Tavella has served as co-pastor with his wife, Amanda Grimmer, in two Lutheran congregations. They are presently serving and for thirty-one years have led Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Abington, Pennsylvania. They have two sons. Tavella is the former Dean of the Atlantic Mission District of the North American Lutheran Church. At the beginning of the Twenty-second Century, the world has entered a Dark Age. A Lutheran pastor, Jonathan Klug, serves a congregation in Felderheim, a town in central Pennsylvania. While struggling with doubt about himself and his ministry, he receives a call from God to build a new community, Sublacum, near the ruins of a church where certain people have claimed to have seen a pillar of light on Saint John's night, December 27. Pastor Jonathan finds a document that confirms his call. He comes to acknowledge that God has enlisted him for this mission. Through the crisis, Jonathan's friend, Anthony Cacciaguida, a priest at Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church, serves as Jonathan's advisor. Both men look to the Word of God for their help. As the state and federal governments weaken, Frank Sulla, a successful businessman, sees his opportunity to gain power and dominate the region around Felderheim. He too has an advisor and guide, Nikolaos Kakos, who is an emissary of the devil. Sulla has signed his name in blood. The battle lines are formed. Good and evil once again face one another in an epic battle. The conflict will require sacrifice and loss of life. The history of the next few centuries will depend on the outcome.
The Rev. Phillip Fischaber, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut, IL, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study 1 Samuel 19. King Saul is determined to kill his young rival David, who has won the hearts of the people and the love of his daughter Michal. But Michal and Jonathan, Saul's son and David's best friend, risk their lives to help David escape from Saul's murderous plots. Will David survive the king's wrath? Will Michal and Jonathan pay the price for their loyalty? And what will happen when David encounters a mysterious prophet in the wilderness? The Book of 1 Samuel beings with the unique birth of Samuel, the last judge of Israel. Soon, the people of Israel begin to press upon the aging prophet Samuel to anoint a king over them like the other nations. YHWH assures Samuel that the people are rejecting their God, not Samuel. He advises Samuel to give the people what they want. What follows is the rise and fall of King Saul, the eventual anointing and coronation of David as king, the forerunner of Jesus. It's a true story of political intrigue and warfare, but it's also more than that. 1 Samuel shows us God working to save his people from their enemies and even from themselves.
Welcome to a very special bonus episode where the "Let Nothing Move You" podcast and "The Whole Church Podcast" collaborate in an interview with Dr Thomas J Oord to discuss his newest book, "The Death of Omnipotence and Birth of Amipotence"! Hosts Joshua Noel and Christian Ashley both present their different views on the power of God and the inerrancy of Scripture and discuss with Dr Oord, his view that we should completely do away with both of these words. Can God create a rock that He can't lift? Can God tell a lie? Does the Bible say that God has all power? Does the Bible say that God created alone? Can God really be loving if He has the power to stop sexual assaults from happening and chooses not to? If God is not all powerful, is He a wimp? Can God be God if He is restrained in His power and exists in our own timeline? And how can we have unity in the Church with such fundamental disagreements? We discuss it all in this one! Rev. Phillip Fischaber, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut, IL, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study 1 Corinthians 8. “Well, actually...” You can just hear the mature Christian lecturing a recent convert that he's foolish for avoiding the foods in the marketplace sacrificed to idols. “You know idols aren't real, right?,” the more knowledgeable Christian lectures. In this part of his letter, St. Paul notes that although this is true, knowledge can “puff up, but love builds up.” (v. 1) Were Christians permitted to purchase and eat meat sacrificed to false pagan gods? Sure, but if it might have caused a brother who still struggled with the association to stumble, it would have been better to act out of love than so-called superior knowledge. In this episode, Pastors Booe and Fischaber unpack what was going on at Corinth and look at ways this message still resonates in our time.

So far in this class we have discussed the standard evangelical, three point sermon style of preaching. There is, however, an entirely different way to approach preaching and teaching in a church, one that uses liturgy and preaching from the Revised Common Lectionary. In this episode, Parish Pastor Will Rose joins me to discuss what it is like following the church calendar and have passages assigned each week to read and preach from. We talk about everything from what it is like preaching through the entire Bible every three years, how to handle burnout when things feel repetitive, and what Will thought of Thor: Love and Thunder! How can a harvest be secured from the ripening field of a church-sponsored child-care ministry? In this episode, Rev. Dan Prugh — Pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Tampa, FL, joins host Rev. Dr. Mark Larson, Manager of Church Planting in the Mission Field: USA initiative, to explore the steps your church can take. About Rev. Dan Prugh: Rev. Our guests today are Brandon Knight of "My Seminary Life", Joe Dea of "Buddy Walk with Jesus", and Pastor Will Rose of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chapel Hill, NC. What happens when a church is called during a crisis to not just to the people in the pews, but to the families, organizations, and businesses in the neighborhood? In this episode, we speak with Meena Natarajan, Executive and Artistic Director of Pangea World Theater, and Ingrid C. A. Rassmussen, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Together, they tell the story of their friendship and partnership in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis following George Floyd's murder in May 2020. Pangea Theater produces community-based art and Holy Trinity is a Lutheran congregation located one block from the Third Police Precinct, which was burned during protests again police brutality in Minneapolis. Since those events, Ingrid and Meena have been meeting together with a coalition of community leaders called Longfellow Rising. Holy Trinity is one of thirteen congregations taking part in Collegeville Institute's Communities of Calling Initiative. The Communities of Calling Initiative is a five-year program that grants congregations funds to design a new project or enhance existing ministries that help Christians discover and deepen their sense of God's calling in their lives.

Rev. Jeremy Loesch, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Grandview, MO joins host Rev. Brady Finnern to study Nehemiah 11. Jerusalem needed leaders and the LORD provided: priests, Levites, temple servants, chiefs, musicians, and gatekeepers. Everyone had a role to play in order that the neighbor would be served and the gifts of the LORD would be received. The LORD grants us a willing spirit to serve where we are planted and continue to receive His gifts. “O Holy Spirit, open our eyes, ears, and hearts to believe in Christ and to serve in Your name where You have placed us. Lord have mercy. Amen”
