Text: Mark 12:35-37 ESV 35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”' 37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly. - Mark 12:35-37 ESV CHRIST IS THE SON OF DAVID Jesus asked the scribes for what reason the scribes in the past say that the Messiah is the son of David. These scribes directly started to refer the Messiah as the son of David 500 years before Jesus was born. Jesus quoted unto them Psa 110:1 wherein David called the Messiah Lord. Then, how is He his son? Jesus doesn't contradict this scribal teaching but explains more fully what it means. He shows how two seemingly contradictory statements can both be true. It was a common belief in Judaism that the ancestors should outrank all his descendants. One example is the priesthood of Melchizedek . He is pre-eminent over the priesthood of the Levites because Abraham, the great-grandfather to Levi, gave tithes to Melchizedek (Heb 7:1–10). Similarly, the Messiah, who would be the descendant of King David, would be subordinate to David (1 Chr 17:11–14; Jer 23:5–6). Thus, their tradition would state that while the Messiah would be lesser than David. However, contrary to cultural assumptions of the time, David acknowledges that his "son" outranks him despite being his descendant. Yes, Jesus is the physical descendant (Luke 3:23–31) and legal descendant (Mat 1:6–16) of David. And, He will rule Israel in a similar manner someday. Yet, He is not solely defined by this subordinate relationship to David. It is because Jesus is also a priest in the order of Milchezedek. Therefore, he has a claim to priestly authority over Aaron's descendants (see Hebrews 7) Thereby, Jesus receives the authority to reign as king from God, not from David. Just as the spiritual priesthood of Melchizedek supersedes that of Abraham's descendants, David understands that God's spiritual kingdom has supremacy over Israel. This has been what Jesus trying to teach the disciples for the last three years. He has not come to rescue Israel from foreign threats like Rome during His first coming. He came first to fight the spiritual battle for the souls of humanity. He came to be the Savior of the world from sins.[Mat 1:21]. He came in order to reconcile the world to God. God's Word for Today 17 Jul, 2024 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” 11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. -Mark 11:7-11 ESV HOSANNA! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD! They brought the donkey to Jesus. They throw their cloaks on it before Jesus sits on it. This has prophetic symbolism [Zech 9:9]. Why He rides on a donkey not a horse. In that era, donkeys were exclusively used for work, whereas horses were more frequently used for war. Rather than entering the city on a horse, like a military conqueror, Jesus arrives on a donkey. This is somewhat like the difference between a modern person riding into town in the back of a pickup truck, as opposed to an armored personnel carrier. Take note, Jesus is going to finish His work at Calvary. As Jesus entered into the city, the people started praising God and laying their cloaks on the road and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. "Leafy branches" is from the Greek root word ‘stibas' and can mean branches with leaves or rushes. Interestingly, John also mentions that the people used palm branches (John 12:13). But, palms are not native to Jerusalem. This implies the people brought them, on purpose and in advance, from Jericho. Everyone from behind and ahead is shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” Hosanna is a Hebrew term. It's a cry of praise or a prayer for salvation. To come "in the name of the Lord" is to come in God's authority, with His permission and purpose. These two phrases are each the first phrases of Psalm 118:25 and 26, respectively. This is known as the thanksgiving Psalm. The people are rightly celebrating that the Jewish Messiah has finally arrived. But, they are incorrect. They assume that His purpose is to rescue Israel from the Roman oppressors. Jesus is surrounded by a mob celebrating that He has come to re-establish the kingdom of David (Mark 11:10). Indeed, it's no exaggeration to say the triumphal entry has accelerated the plans to kill Jesus. The religious leaders are concerned and jealous since this event clearly established Him as a "problem" which would never go away. But far from what they expect, Jesus is not concerned for the Jewish crowd to be saved from Rome. But, He came to save them from their sins which will lead them to eternal damnation. Preacher: Isaac Adams Text: Mark 10:46-52 Pastor Isaac continues a series entitled “Who is Jesus?” through the Gospel of Mark. The passage urges us to see Jesus in all his glory.
'It was impossible for me to go into a stately home (a treat for a seven year old) and not enquire whether there had been any blood shed, or bones found.'It was impossible for me to go into a stately home (a treat for a seven year old) and not enquire whether there had been any blood shed, or bones found in the priest hole. Becoming a crime journalist and then a crime novelist was always on the cards.
Over the last three weeks, we've seen Jesus answer questions from three different groups of religious leaders. The religious leaders weren't seeking to discover truth with these questions. They were questions meant to trap him, alienate him from his supporters, or get him in trouble with the Roman government. Pharisees' tax questionSadducees' resurrection questionScribe's law questionHe has answered each of them with such skill and wisdom that the text says no one else dared to ask him any questions. The debate is over. Jesus stands victorious. (Battle royale analogy)But these antagonistic questions were not enough to reveal who Jesus really is. It's now his turn to ask the questions, and he begins with a question about the Messiah. Unlike the religious leaders, whose questions were meant to trap, Jesus wants to reveal himself. Essentially, he's asking, “Do you know who I am?” This is one of the great attributes of God - he seeks to reveal himself to us. It's hard to imagine when you really think about it. The God of the universe longs to reveal himself in a personal way - to me? King David wrestled with this idea in Psalm 8.Psalm 8:3-4 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place—4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?General Revelation - creationSpecial Revelation - BiblePersonal Revelation - Jesus Jesus is the pinnacle of God's revelation to humanity. He is God in the flesh and at the heart of his question to the Pharisees he is asking - do you know who I am? That's the question I want to use as a framework for today's message: Do you know who Jesus is? Jesus is going to use Psalm 110 as the means to reveal himself Read Psalm 110 as intro? The LORD said to my Lord,“Sit in the place of honor at my right handuntil I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”The LORD will extend your powerful kingdom from Jerusalem;you will rule over your enemies. When you go to war, your people will serve you willingly. You are arrayed in holy garments, and your strength will be renewed each day like the morning dew.The LORD has taken an oath and will not break his vow:“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”The Lord stands at your right hand to protect you.He will strike down many kings when his anger erupts. He will punish the nationsand fill their lands with corpses;he will shatter heads over the whole earth. But he himself will be refreshed from brooks along the way.He will be victorious.(Pillar New Testament Commentary) Ps 110 is quoted or alluded to thirty-three times in the NT, and an additional seven times in early Christian authors. See D. M. Hay, Glory at the Right Hand. Psalm 110 in Early Christianity (Nashville/New York: Abingdon Press, 1973), 15, 45-47.(Pillar New Testament Commentary) The preceding story ended with the note that "from then on no one dared ask [Jesus] any more questions" (12:34). The wording of v. 34 (particularly in Gk.) is strong and unequivocal, signifying that Jesus has prevailed over challenges from the Sanhedrin (11:27-33) and its various constituencies – the Pharisees (12:13-17), Sadducees (12:18-27), and scribes (12:28-34). Jesus has bested the field and debate is closed. Jesus does not quit the field, however, but he takes it. The meaning of his person and the kingdom he proclaims cannot be understood by mere responses to human interrogation – especially when the interrogation is antagonistic. The questions and categories of the Sanhedrin, the supreme authority in Judaism, are not sufficient to reveal and encompass Jesus. And if...

This episode combines audio from November 2021 and January 2023, made in the Purbeck Heaths National Nature Reserve in Dorset. Back in 2021 I interviewed David Brown and Mark Singleton about the natural process-led solutions that the National Trust and partners were adopting on the vast area of protected Heathland. The area is very important for biodiversity, but it has been a very highly 'managed' landscape for a long time. Drawing on principles from rewilding, the Trust are now adopting more natural process-led solutions for nature restoration at a landscape scale, including large herbivores and even thinking about Bison. The episode ends with an update from David in 2023, and it gives hope that it is possible to make these changes at scale, even in our busy and overpopulated land. David Mark is recognised as a 'master of the dark psychological thriller', drawing upon his 15 years of experience as a crime journalist. After a decade as a full-time novelist and Sunday Times bestseller, David penned the critically-acclaimed memoir PIECE OF MIND, detailing his lifelong battle with depression, mania, OCD, addiction and hallucinations. The book has been labelled 'a life-saver' and 'essential reading' by readers, contemporaries, and mental health professionals. How he feels that unbroken means that he's like a wild horse as he's not had his will snapped or been broken into submission by his illness. How he believes that he's so much more than the events in his life. How being truthful was not as difficult as he thought it would be when he was writing his memoir,How writing really helped him to work out what was his illness and what was his personality. How he used to think he was demonic because of the hideous hallucinations he experienced but managed to grow used to them by learning what was real and what wasn't.How he still struggles with the idea of being vulnerable and weak. How he can't emphasis enough that we should treat people who are unwell with tenderness, patience and compassion. How he now feels he's at the best he'll ever be and never though he could be this well with his mental illness."Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. Tune in to discover what helped them to stay unbroken and together we will discover that none of us are broken beyond repair. You can find out more about Madeleine, her story and her memoir, Unbroken, from her website: https://madeleineblack.co.uk/

This talk can be a really fun talk in which the congregation is walked through the gospel of Mark as we explore how people are progressively transformed (converted) as they discover who Jesus really is. Although the demons know Jesus' true Identity and God the Father knows who Jesus is, human beings in Mark's gospel get more and more light regarding his identity. 1. Jesus is known as a teacher (1:16-4:34); 2. Jesus is known as a prophet (Mark 4:35-6:30); 3. Jesus is known as Messiah (Mark 6:31-8:30); 4. Jesus is known as Son of Man (Mark 8:31-10:45); 5. Jesus is known as the Son of David (Mark 10:46-13:37). 6. Finally at the cross, Jesus is called by a human being, a Roman Centurion no less, the Son of God: "Surely this man was the Son of God!" (Mark 15:39). It's this progressive discovery of who Jesus is that brings fulfillment to us. It is when he was on the cross that we see most plainly, this is the Son of God. (Tom Holland in his book Dominion contrasts the way Christianity spread w Islam - the Early Christians choose to take this disgusting form of death and man that was put on the cross and worshipped him as Son of God. It completely flipped the worldview - a Roman recognized that this was the Son of God in the death on the cross - now we care about the weak and lowly and those things become valued)
Shortly after answering the 3 questions previously covered, Jesus immediately addresses how He can be the “Son of David” and also David's Lord.

Then, Jimmy talks with the Washington Examiner's David Mark about the new Examiner series Reputation Politics: The history of character assassination in America.

While the disciples continue to struggle to understand Jesus, Jesus encounters a blind beggar named Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus declares his faith in Christ and asks for his sight to be restored. Jesus heals Bartimaeus and, in doing so, continues to point the disciples to his gospel mission. When our friends and families fail to recognize Jesus for who he is, we ask in faith for God to grant them sight.1. A blind beggar (v. 46)2. A persistent faith (vs. 47-48)3.
