There’s another Hunckler building community in Indianapolis? This week we chat with Matt Hunckler about the entrepreneurial career that led him to accidentally start Powderkeg. Matt, brother to alumni Josie Hunckler of Rabble Coffee, spent his youth designing buildings, desirous of being an architect. While visiting friends at IU during his freshman year at Purdue, Matt would drop-in to the #1 rated entrepreneurship school in the country where he learned how concepts like accounting and finance were the building blocks of a business. As you might expect, Matt transferred to IU, where he started his first business after listening to alumni Scott Hill's presentation about his experience as an entrepreneur. After graduation and while in the Orr Fellowship, he started a group called Verge for entrepreneurs in the tech space to get feedback on their projects. It wasn’t his intention for it to grow, but it’s now a comprehensive, curated platform to connect the right people to the right culture in tech. Specifically, in areas that do not have a dense population of talent. Take a sip of your Hotel Tango whiskey as we learn about how vital culture match is to employee retention, about the growing tech community and industry, and the struggles of growing a lifestyle business. We even have a special, uninvited guest who tunes in. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you this week with Matt Hunckler of Powderkeg. Bottleworks. With one word, we have the attention of every person in Indianapolis. In this episode, we talk to the guy behind its vision - the CEO of Hendricks Commercial Properties, Rob Gerbitz. The Wisconsinite grew up with a father in the family restaurant business. From his experience helping his dad, Rob knew that he didn't want to run the family restaurant business. The restaurant did, however, lead him to his passion when one of his customers invited him to interview at the customer's property management company. From day one, Rob knew that he was addicted to the fast-paced chaos in property management. As he grew in the industry, he learned the value of a visionary leader and how to balance chaos and organization. Rob exited his own company with the intent to take time off work; however, he quickly realized that life without work is boring. When he interviewed with Hendricks Commercial Properties - which is owned by Diane Hendricks who is rated #1 for Forbes’ American Self-Made Women - Rob recognized that it was a special place to work. Tune in to learn about the property management industry, the importance of details, and the smell that fills the Ironworks Hotel. Join us this week as we hit the road for our first out of state recording with Tamar Banner, the US head of production at Brewdog. Tamar attended Yale where she studied mathematics and engineering but after graduation, she spent a summer at a dude ranch in Colorado where she had her first sip of craft beer and that totally changed her life. 18 years later, she ended up at BrewDog in Canal Winchester, Ohio just outside of Columbus but not without gaining a ton of experience at breweries like Harpoon and New Belgium. Making the switch from the brewing side to the management side was important to Tamar because she has always wanted to give back and felt that her education, background, and being a female in a male dominated industry would allow her to share her unique perspective. Now, at BrewDog, she is helping them to accomplish their mission to make people as passionate about craft beer as they are. Sit back and enjoy a pint of Elvis Juice as we learn about what makes BrewDog different than so many other breweries, cheesemaking, the world’s first craft beer hotel, and why Brewdog has chosen Fountain Square to open up their next bar. Coffee shops aren’t about the caffeine boost or delicious pastries, it’s about coming together as a community in a third space. Josie Hunckler started Rabble Coffee on East 10th Street only 3.5 months after graduating college. At 15, she began working in West Lafayette coffee shops and her goal when graduating from college was to get a “normal job” to pay off her debt and then open a coffee shop. Her family encouraged her to pursue something that made her happy even if it didn't make money, so her brother-in-law co-signed on a loan to pursue her dream. Three and a half months later, Josie opened Rabble Coffee with only $20 left in her personal bank account. Rabble Coffee - meaning "the people" - embodies social entrepreneurship to offer her neighborhood a third space.  Josie has leveraged Rabble Coffee as a community space using art, giveback programs, no purchase requirements, barter schools and more to encourage relationship and skill building in the space. With great humility, our most requested guest shares the stories of risking robbery, saving lives, and focusing on providing value to the community. Jeb Banner believes that he learned everything about business from being in a band. As a child, he was immediately infatuated with music and spent his days analyzing the intricacies of the rhythms, instruments, and melodies. Jeb continued to develop his talent in college through his involvement in the Bloomington music scene, withholding the philosophy that relationships are more valuable than good grades. The skills he learned from music met entrepreneurship when he began auctioning antiques on eBay in 1999. He believes that if you don’t care about what you’re doing, don’t do it. After becoming burned out from eBay, he proposed the first project of his soon-to-be company, SmallBox, which was building NUVO's website. Jeb believes there are particular elements in the alchemy of business - market, time, and urgency to the opportunity. When his SmallBox team recognized a need in the non-profit space for software, he decided to separate it from SmallBox and became CEO of Boardable in 2018.
