Episode 534 - Peter Gribble - Welcome to the City of the Magicians - a looming crisis is about to reinvigorate Magic in all its wonders and dangersCanadian Author, Peter Gribble has written for NUVO and other magazines in British Columbia. For over ten years he wrote a monthly gardening column for a local Vancouver paper. The City of the Magicians is his first published series.I wondered how a pacifist, non-violent city-state could effectively prepare for a barbarian invasion while keeping their integrity intact. The City Council comes up with a decent solution plus a way of delivering it but as usual with good ideas they can hit unexpected snags. Then there were the images hanging about in my head patiently waiting for me to write towards them. When they are ready (or I am) they pop onto the page as if readymade. It's not writing; more like taking dictation. One of these images haunted me for years until it finally found its place in the third book of the series: In the midst of a fire, an unknown book's flyleaf is blown smoking into your grasp. On it is a dedication inscribed to someone you know.https://petergribble.com/https://publishing.tellwell.ca/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Today's podcast guest is Brian Underdahl who is Chief Analytics Officer at Nuvo Capital Partners, a family office backed rescue capital shop with a difference. Much of the so called 'rescue' capital you see in the market today is preferred equity. Pref equity typically comes into deals charging mid-teen returns, takes a senior position to existing GP/LPs, takes no share of the upside, and keeps the existing ownership in place, subject to performance hurdles. Nuvo's model is to buy distressed multifamily deals outright at fair market value and then provide the selling entity's existing general partners and limited partners a share of the upside in the new, buying entity. In today's episode you'll learn how this kind of rescue capital works and what kinds of deals it looks for. Of particular interest today is that Brian has personally vetted over 500 sponsors nationwide in direct conversations with them, and shares his insights into what makes the good stand out from the bad. Lastly, a note of thanks to Brian for having contributed (kind of) to my latest book, Capital Calls and RESCUE Capital. Brian and I recorded a Q&A session where he answered my questions about advanced real estate syndication terminology. It's what I call 'real estate syndication 2.0' and is the language of a downturn. Brian fields over 25 advanced questions from me and you can get free access to the entire series as a bonus for buying my latest ($7) book, Capital Calls and RESCUE Capital, here: https://learn.gowercrowd.com/rescue/ ** In this brand new podcast series at GowerCrowd, The Real Estate Reality Show, we take a realistic view of commercial real estate investing, providing pragmatic insights for passive investors who are looking for sponsors they can trust and distressed opportunities they can invest in. You'll find no quick fixes or easy money ideas here, no sales pitches, big egos or hype. You'll learn how to build your wealth while protecting your capital investing as a limited partner in commercial real estate investments, even and especially during an economic downturn. Multi-class basketball that began in the late 1990s killed attendance at games, particularly the tournaments. Girls basketball teams didn't exist at Indiana high schools before the early 1970s. And the first basketball game on Hoosier soil was played in 1894 at a YMCA in Crawfordsville. All of those are misconceptions, a basketball historian says. So, Hoosier History Live will explore prevailing assumptions about Hoosier high school hoops as well as share tidbits about the history of the sport that has long been part of the state's cultural identity. This will include a look at unusual sites that once served as gyms such as a Studebaker factory in South Bend as well as racial obstacles that confronted a team from Michigan City, Ind., in the 1950s. Nelson's guest will be Matt Werner, a basketball historian and author based in LaPorte County who is known for his extensive research into the sport's storied past in Indiana. In an in-depth analysis published last March in Nuvo that used data supplied by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), Matt challenged the assumption that the elimination in 1997 of the single-class tournament system in Indiana (immortalized in the movie Hoosiers based on the upset victory in 1954 of tiny Milan High School) killed attendance. Instead, as Matt documented, attendance at tournament games, including sectional, regional and semi-state playoffs, had been in a 25-year slump beginning in 1962, the peak year for tournament attendance. Multi-class basketball, in which Indiana high schools compete against teams of similar size, actually slowed the rate of decline, Matt has concluded.

John Michael Fiumara / @john7michael is currently tearing up the stage with his taps in FUNNY GIRL on Broadway. From John Michael via Bloc Agency: I was born and raised in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania! I grew up as a dance competition kid, which is what got me into dancing in front of audiences. It allowed me to become more comfortable, and confident in front of them as well. My first inspiration for dance came from watching the classics, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and Sammy Davis Jr. Those men were the reason why I went to a dance studio in the first place. My dance studio's name was the Abby Lee Dance Company, which is where I received most of my dance training, along with dance conventions like NYCDA, JUMP, NUVO, etc. I started out as more of a tap dancer, but realized how important ballet was once I had started doing the Youth American Grand Prix competitions. That's what really helped contribute to my technique. https://builtforthestage.com/ - fill out the form and ask about our next fitness challenge! www.broadwaypodcastnetwork.com Learn more about your ad choices. In the Middle Ages, women in labor could ask for a special birthing stone to help reduce the pain. While this was likely ineffective, pain reduction techniques and the midwives who practiced them were often suspected of witchcraft. We've come a long way since then but when it comes to pregnancy and labor but, just as in the past, there are still many challenges for those giving birth. Hear how advances in medicine and midwifery have improved the experience of labor and increased women's choice for how they give birth. And learn how companies use technology and collaboration to expand access to prenatal care to strengthen the relationship between doctors and midwives on this episode of Trailblazers. Featuring Tina Cassidy, Ina May Gaskin, Jenny Joy, Kypros Nicolaides, Ryan Kraudel and Ila Dayananda. For more on the podcast go to delltechnologies.com/trailblazers

In this episode of the Future Church Podcast, Carrie Williams (Special Projects Director for Exponential) talks with Patrick Holden of Nuvo Church. Nuvo began as a church plant with 3 families living in different parts of the country who wanted to launch in Columbus, OH. By utilizing social media, Nuvo was able to launch during the Pandemic through digital services, digital groups, in person groups, and pop-up gatherings in different parts of the city. Their “hope is to create a scalable model of in person gatherings, partnered with a unique digital presence to reach agnostics and people de-constructing their faith”. Listen to Episode 5 of the podcast and access the show notes below. Future Church Insights: 1. Patrick explains the unusual start to Nuvo and how that has led to a strong launch team. Patrick and his team were still in different parts of the country and had yet to move to Columbus. His base church allowed him to stay on staff but also begin fundraising and building a team for the church plant in Columbus. By connecting with people around Columbus through Facebook groups, Patrick and the rest of the team cold called people to gain a better understanding of the city and its needs. From these conversations, they were able to build about half of their launch team. 2. Patrick highlights some of the ways they were able to reach people through Social Media. Building from what his team learned from Tony Morgan, they began creating “Content Offers” on social media. For example, they posted a series of videos during the election debates about how to survive the election. This was a way to reach an audience and capture email addresses for future events. 3. Patrick is constantly learning from Social Media. He talks about studying TikTok accounts to see how to communicate a lot of information in just a minute. Patricks says that continuing to learn and study and grow in this area has been an important part of their church plant. Goals and Desired Outcomes of Nuvo Create a scalable approach to live/in-person gatherings that models financial sustainability and fuels exponential versions of live expressions. Create an online presence that encapsulates multiple avenues of content offering and communal development. Provide helpful and thought-provoking content for the person who is currently deconstructing their faith and/or the person who would now identify as agnostic. Build a sustainable model that fuels internal campus-ing and external church planting with like-minded leaders in similar city situations. Develop discipleship pathways for kids/teenagers that equips them for a faith of their own after high school. Links: Nuvo Church More of a reader? Download the transcription here. Key Quotes from the episode from Patrick Holden: “I would just say for every communicator, the temptation is a pandemic kind of, it's slowing in some ways, is to go back to what we've always done. I would say we've got to be great students of great communicators that do it in different ways than we do.” (21:44) “I think the biggest challenge is learning to speak the language of a generation that's coming behind us. I think it's changing so fast. I think there's a temptation to want to appear cool or whatever that is, which is all good. Again, we have moving lights, we have an ... It's not a not cool thing, but the language and the needs are continually shifting.” (22:20) “I would encourage pastors [by saying], "God knew that you would be a pastor in 2021 and 2020." And as difficult as it can be, I think there's a part of going, "God called you to do what He called you to do, but He likely called you to do it when He called you to do it." (25:20)

As Hoosier History Live salutes Black History Month - as well as the Bicentennial era of Indianapolis - we will explore the life of the first woman of color to move to the new Hoosier capital in 1821. Little had been known about Chaney Lively (1800-1858?), who came to the Indiana wilderness from Kentucky, until our guest researched her life for a cover story in 2019 for Nuvo, the alternative newsweekly. Laura McPhee, the former editor of Nuvo, will join Nelson to share details of her research about Chaney Lively, who arrived as the clerk and housekeeper for surveyor Alexander Ralston, who created the design for Indianapolis. After Ralston died in 1827, Chaney Lively became the first African-American woman to own a house in the Hoosier capital. At that point the city consisted only of the downtown area known today as the Mile Square, which Ralston designed after coming to Indianapolis in the early summer of 1821. "When the platted lots went for sale in October, he bought two lots on the first day: one for him and one expressly for Chaney," according to Laura's article. Chaney Lively inherited the property at Meridian and Maryland streets when Ralston died. Laura notes that although Chaney Lively arrived as a free woman of color, she had been enslaved in Kentucky. "It's not clear where or when, but...Ralston purchased Chaney as a slave," Laura wrote. "Most likely, he bought her in Louisville, a major slave trading hub at the time he lived there in the early 1800s." By researching accounts of Hoosier pioneers, including the multi-volume diary of civic leader Calvin Fletcher, who became the first practicing attorney in Indianapolis, Laura has determined that Chaney Lively was a highly regarded, well-liked resident of the city. Hoosier History Live explored the life of Ralston, who had been born in Scotland, for a show in 2013; during a show in 2016, we delved into the life of Fletcher, a New England native who, in addition to becoming an attorney, was a banker, state legislator and the owner of vast tracts of property in central Indiana. By the time Ralston died and Chaney, who lived with him, "moved into her own home in 1827," Laura wrote, "there were less than 60 people of color - men, women and children - living in Indianapolis out of a population of a little more than 1,000." In addition to sharing details about the life of Chaney Lively, Laura will describe other Black residents who came to nascent Indianapolis. The population increased in the 1830s with the construction through the city of the National Road (now U.S. 40/Washington Street). When labor camps sprang up for workers on the road, Chaney Lively cooked and did laundry for many of them. She also took in boarders, according to Laura's article. In 1836, Chaney married John Britton, a former slave who became a barber in Indianapolis. They were among the founding members of Bethel AME Church, which opened in 1841. In Laura's article for Nuvo, she concludes Chaney died in 1857 or 1858 based on a reference by Fletcher to her passing. Since her departure from Nuvo in 2019, Laura has owned Pen and Pink Vintage, a book shop in the Garfield Park neighborhood specializing in books by women, Indiana authors and Indiana history. At Nuvo, where she was an editor and award-winning writer for nearly 15 years, Laura was known for her coverage of local news and social justice issues. Laura says she decided to research Chaney Lively's life out of frustration at the scarcity of research undertaken by others. She determined that when Ralston, who had no known family members in America, arrived in Indianapolis with 21-year-old Chaney Lively, she was described as "a mulatto woman." After Chaney's marriage to John Britton, she is rarely mentioned in diaries and memoirs of early settlers or in Indianapolis newspapers, Laura discovered. But Britton, a civic leader in the Black community, was mentioned frequently. In 1845, he was a vocal supporter for justice in the death of their neighbor, a Black man who was attacked by a white mob. Britton also was an Indiana delegate to the 1848 Colored National Convention initiated by Frederick Douglass, according to Laura's research. Chaney and John Britton had a daughter, Eliza. Since her Nuvo article was published, Laura McPhee has been searching for their descendants.
