Worship service given March 16, 2025 Prayer by Mary Breen, Worship Associate https://firstparish.info/ First Parish A liberal religious community, welcoming to all First gathered 1739 In a world that often rewards the loudest voices, what does it mean to embrace being little—to be soft-spoken, to move gently, to love quietly? True strength is not always found in grand gestures but in the quiet persistence of kindness, in the humility of service, in the grace of listening. Music Sunday selections —Haydn's “Little Organ Mass, Missa brevis sancti Joannis de Deo” and Pederson's “Choose Love”—remind us that small acts are actually transformative. In being little, we find the space to be fully present and to engage with each other without anxiety, pretension, or fear. Music pieces featured in this video, in order of appearance: "I Choose Love," Kyle Pederson, performed by the First Parish Choir Musical Reflection Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo ("Little Organ Mass"), Franz Joseph Haydn I.    Kyrie II.    Gloria III.    Credo IV.    Sanctus  V.    Benedictus VI.    Agnus Dei The First Parish Choir, featuring: Mark Dirksen, organ Erin Matthews, soprano Sabine Gross, violin An Chi Lin, violin Jenna Wang, cello   Offering and Giving First For March 2025, the Giving First recipient is the Resilient Sisterhood Project. Cambridge-based Resilient Sisterhood Project's mission is to educate and empower women of African descent regarding common, yet rarely discussed, diseases of the reproductive system that disproportionately affect them. They approach these diseases and associated issues through a cultural and social justice lens since they understand that poor knowledge of reproductive health is primarily related to health, racial, and socioeconomic disparities. RSP brings an expansive definition to and understanding of the word “women” to include transgender women, cisgender women, gender queer, and gender non-conforming people who have a female reproductive system. About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.

Worship service given November 17, 2024 Prayer by Rev. Marta Morris Flanagan, Lead Minister Reading by Dr. Daniel Parsley of "I Choose Love" by Tammy T. Stone Featuring "Five Hebrew Love Songs" by Eric Whitacre, performed by the First Parish Choir and  First Parish String Quartet https://firstparish.info/ First Parish A liberal religious community, welcoming to all First gathered 1739 Join us at First Parish in Arlington as we explore the theme of “choosing love”—even when it feels beyond our reach. Through the music of Eric Whitacre's "Five Hebrew Love Songs" and Mark Miller's "I Believe", performed with string quartet and First Parish Choir, we'll reflect on how love can be a conscious choice and how, in moments when love is hard to choose, we can still resist apathy, fear, and the all-too-human temptation to hate. Drawing from Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, we'll seek ways to embrace patience and understanding as we navigate and help build a more loving community. Offering and Giving First The Giving First program donates 50% of the non-pledge offering each month to a charitable organization that we feel is consistent with Unitarian Universalist principles. The program began in November 2009, and First Parish has donated over $200,000 to more than 70 organizations. This Sunday half of the offering supports Resource Organizing Project. Resource Organizing Project builds stronger movements for justice and liberation in New England with racial, economic, environmental, and gender justice partners. They offer affordable and high quality services, practices, spaces, and pathways that support both interdependence and self-reliance for community self-determination. ROP is endorsed by Episcopal Dioceses and by the Reparations Interfaith Coalition.  The remaining half of your offering supports the life and work of this Parish. Love may be a many-splendored thing, but it isn't something we often talk about at work. Love falls into that category of soft, personal things we've traditionally shoved in a box and left at the door in order to be “professionals.” We think that when we leave love at the door, we're leaving a whole lot of other valuable things with it. So, should we talk about love at work? Our guest on today's episode is Sara Heppner, a graphic recorder and facilitator with a passion for creative communication. Through visual and creative processes, she works with individuals and groups to cultivate awareness, nurture connection and create a world where all can flourish. Her new book, I Choose Love, was published earlier this year. By focusing on love, Sara believes that together, we can make the world a better place.

It was a pleasure speaking with Sheree Brown. She is a true star with a real talent for music, melody and songwriting. Without a doubt her songs are timeless and will be listened to for years to come and I am honoured to have spoken to one of the greatest artists in R and B. Her's a liittle bit about Sheree Brown. Sheree Brown is an artist and a brand, she is a multi-media experience whose music and projects inspires, educates, uplift and touch the hearts of those across generations, lifestyles, and cultures. She is a singer, songwriter, musician, producer, and teacher. Sheree began her career as a rhythm and blues and pop recording artist on the Capitol Records label in the early eighties. While on the label, she wrote and played guitar on all of the songs for her two albums Straight Ahead and The Music. They have both been re-released. Both of these albums have been digitally re-mastered on CDs. This re-release is giving Sheree another opportunity to reach out and share positive inspiration through her music. Sheree has performed a one-woman show in Germany, Egypt, Israel and Italy. She co-wrote the first House of Blues “School House Tour” program that had a two year run at the famed Hollywood House of Blues. Additionally, she has been a guest host for the popular weekly Gospel Brunch at the same venue, and received an Emmy® Award nomination for co-producing a public service announcement and music video that promoted youth against violence and self-esteem. Sheree has achieved gold and platinum record status over the years for songs that she has written or co-written for various artists, including Kirk Franklin's hit “Looking for You”, a #1 gospel hit. She is a multiple ASCAP Award winning recipient and has written for such artists as Grammy nominated composer and musician Patrice Rushen (Haven't You Heard and Settle For My Love) and Zhane (Groove Thang). She has co-written, recorded and published close to 100 songs, including songs for the acclaimed movie, Hollywood Shuffle. Sheree has co-authored a children's book, Zhakanaka The Word. This highly acclaimed book is a part of a national peace campaign that focuses on self-esteem, literacy, and anti-bullying. Additionally, she has released a children's music CD, We're All Only Children. Coming off of the success of her European tour, she released her project Messages From The Heart, a highly anticipated concept project that includes a book and music CD. She recently released her first single in a few years, “I Choose Love”, written by her and Patrice Rushen. The song is from her forthcoming musical effort Messages From The Spirit…The Collective and is the follow up to Messages From The Heart, using the same formats. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/neil-clark10/message

Are you gripped by fear? Can you recall a time that left you frightened? Maybe it was because of a major change in your life, the loss of a loved one, or a sickness. Maybe it was a world event, such as 9-11, or a natural disaster. Maybe it is something you are feeling right now.  Our guest is author A.G. Billig and she found herself gripped with fear, and noticed many others were too. Instead of succumbing to that fear, she chose love, and that has made all the difference.   Her book is called I Choose Love. It is a remarkable journey that is more than a relationship book. If you are ready to truly read something that is powerful and transformational, then this is a book you can’t pass by.    I Choose Love: A Journey from Fear to Love is an awakening for your heart, re-affirming your direction in life, and a guide for choosing love every day.  A.G. Billig is not only an author, but a journalist, a radio host, certified trainer and Reiki practitioner, as well as someone skilled in self publishing and the literary world. She is someone who interweaves real stories with ancient wisdom.   The ideas presented in I Choose Love: A Journey from Fear to Love are the result of her encounters with spiritual teachers and healers such as Neale Donald Walsch and John of God, the study of ancient wisdom, and seven years of spiritual practice.   What makes A.G. Billig's story unique is that although she was born and raised in Romania as a daughter to a French father and Romanian mother, the American culture has always been part of her life through books, music, movies, art. Her writing and publishing career spans  two continents – Europe and North America, and four different countries – Romania, Great Britain, Ireland, and the U.S.
