Women's semi-finals day at Roland Garros 2021 will live long in the memory, with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova reaching a first Grand Slam final in her 52nd appearance and Barbora Krejcikova winning an absolute classic against Maria Sakkari. We discuss Krejcikova's composure and mental resilience, her moonballling tactics, the extraordinary closing stages as match points came and went for both players, Hawkeye on clay, Krejcikova's emotional tribute to late coach Jana Novotna, how the defeat will hit Sakkari, and the way in which Pavlyuchenkova continues to re-write her own story. Looking ahead to tomorrow men's semi-finals, we discuss how much of a chance Novak Djokovic has against Rafael Nadal, and why more people aren't talking about the fact that Nadal is two matches away from breaking Roger Federer's men's Grand Slam record. Garbiñe Muguruza has finally turned her fantastic form into a title with victory in Dubai. In what way was she feeling the pressure of ending her title drought? How much of a role has Conchita Martínez played in her improved consistency? And how might her season develop from here? As for the woman she beat in the final, Barbora Krejčíková, David explains why we’ve mistakenly considered her to be exclusively a doubles player up until now, the advice she received from her former coach Jana Novotna, and the way her singles results have improved since tennis re-started last summer. Elsewhere, we discuss the way in which lengthy bathroom breaks in women’s tennis are talked about and whether there needs to be a rule change, we cover a 10th career title for new World No.2 Daniil Medvedev in Marseille, and we dive deep into the playing style, career and hair of Pierre-Hugues Herbert The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. How were her sassy comments and confidence received at the time? In what way did she sometimes get herself in trouble with remarks about fellow players? What made her such a joy to watch? And why did she not go on to dominate for years despite a couple of comebacks?Mary Carillo and Lindsay Davenport give perspective on how the power revolution in women’s tennis caught up with Hingis, and Martina herself explains why she thinks players are no longer having the success she had as a teenager. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ben and Courtney reunite on this packed episode and start with a discussion of the legacy of the late Jana Novotna, who passed away at age 49 due to cancer. How should her legendary breakdown and resilience continue to influence how we see the sport today? As the WTA and ATP seasons wrapped up, what did we learn about the respective year-end champs, Caroline Wozniacki and Grigor Dimitrov? Will either be able to carry their results into next year? And is 2018 primed to be a year full of first-time major champions on either or both tours? We then touch on the ATP Next Gen event in Milan, its tasteless draw ceremony, and the reactions to mid-match coaching with headsets. Our takes vary here. Then we introduce you all to the #NCRBookClub, which is starting with Venus Envy by John Wertheim, which you should read! Lastly, Courtney gives all sorts of movie recommendations and Ben talks about his game show experience and recent Jeopardy closure.
