Leif Shiras returns to the show to recap the Cincinnati Open, which saw Carlos Alcaraz outlast the heat as Jannik Sinner retired in the final. Shiras weighs on the brutal Midwest conditions, what it means for Sinner as he heads to the year's final major, and how this title can give Alcaraz the boost he needs. The broadcaster also explains what makes Iga Swiatek so dangerous after she notched another big title in the Queen City, and why Aryna Sabalenka's schedule is a fascinating subplot heading into New York. Shiras also looks at the top contenders heading into The US Open, and examines whether Novak Djokovic will be in form as he aims for major title number 25. The commentator looks at the potential of Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and Jack Draper on the men's side, and dives into female contenders Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff, who just parted ways with her coach. And Shiras gives his thoughts on the brand-new US Open Mixed Doubles event, which has been a smash hit in terms of popularity. Hosted by Mitch Michals.

This week Erik and Aidan discuss the first few rounds of the ATP Canada Masters that is currently taking place in Toronto. With top seeds like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic absent from the tournament, it is a great opportunity for another top player or underrated newcomer to step up and take the tournament as an underdog. Favorites like Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev seem to be on a collision course, but other threats like Alex De Minaur and Ben Shelton seem to be waiting in the wings for a chance to strike for the title. David is back from holiday to join Catherine and Matt in discussing week one of the Canadian Open, where lots of the big names are out, there has been loads of good matches, and both draws feel pretty open heading into the final few days. Part one - WTA Montreal. We cover Victoria Mboko's special run to the quarter-finals, Coco Gauff's recurring double fault issues, Naomi Osaka's resurgence under new coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, compelling matches involving Madison Keys, Elena Rybakina and Marta Kostyuk, the unorthodox game of Aoi Ito, and the decision to give Eugenie Bouchard a wildcard so she could retire. Part two - ATP Toronto (from 49m). How much meaning can we take from a tournament without Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic? That's the task when assessing the men's event, which has seen Alexei Popyrin mount an impressive title defence so far, Daniil Medvedev continue to slump, and compelling final set tiebreak wins for Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton. There was also a strange complaint from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina leading to sweet spot social media aggro involving Dan Evans. Part three - US Open news (from 70m15s). With most of the US Open mixed doubles pairings having been announced, we quiz David on his views, and he throws a fun name into the ring for one of the remaining wildcards. There's also the launch of the US Open's matchmaker show to discuss. Tickets are on sale now for the Tennis History Conference at Wimbledon on Tuesday 9th December. Shout out to Iga Swiatek, double-bagelling Amanda Anisimova in the ladies' final in 57mins. The Pole is now 6-0 in Grand Slam finals which is quite bossy. Also, shout out to the men's champion Jannik Sinner who came back from a set down to see off defending champ Carlos Alcaraz in four – these two are playing a different sport. Lucy was spot on with her men's take (she knows ball), while Eugene had Anisimova as his second pick. From a BSG perspective, Ben Shelton reaching the quarter-finals, where he lost to the eventual champ was very good going – went one round better than last year. The American is up to a career high world No 9 in the rankings. Hailey Baptiste making a run to the third round on her singles main-draw debut was also a standout. Her second-round match against lucky loser Victoria Mboko was a nice moment. Naomi Osaka looked good on the grass and had opportunities against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in round three. Glad to see the four-time major winner already hitting on the grounds at Flushing Meadows. Gabriel Diallo gave a good account of himself on his debut, very nearly taking out eventual semi-finalist Taylor Fritz in five sets in the second round. Big shout out to 2024 ladies' doubles champions Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova who bowed out in the semi-finals this year. Congrats to Siniakova for securing the mixed doubles crown though with Sem Verbeek. We absolutely loved celebrating the 50th anniversary of Arthur Ashe winning Wimbledon with the oral histories before each episode during week 1! The Wimbledon Watchalong at PlayBox, BoxPark was such a blast and year 3 at the Championships overall was a great experience. We feel blessed and privileged to be part of the growing community of podcasters in this space – shouts out to Tennis Weekly, Quality Shot and Tennis Unfiltered. Still, we congratulate Taylor Fritz on a great grass court season, and look forward to seeing what he can do in the North American hard court swing.American tennis pro Brandon Nakashima took a well-earned break from the professional circuit yesterday, opting for a day filled with casual sports and quality time with his brother. After spending the earlier part of the day on the golf course, Nakashima was spotted later hitting tennis balls with his brother in what appeared to be a relaxed and enjoyable session on the courts. While there are no major updates to report in terms of tournaments or rankings for Nakashima at the moment, the glimpse into his off-court life is a reminder of the balance athletes strive to maintain during the long, demanding tennis season. With the ATP Tour's summer hardcourt swing approaching, days like these offer a chance to recharge both physically and mentally.Known for his calm demeanor and powerful baseline play, Nakashima has steadily carved out a name for himself on tour. His 2022 ATP title in San Diego and deep runs in several other tournaments have shown that he possesses both the talent and the temperament to compete with the best. But like any top-tier athlete, downtime is essential—and yesterday's mix of golf and tennis seems to be part of that personal formula. While fans may be eager for news of his next big match or training milestone, it's moments like these that provide a deeper look at the human side of high-performance sport. Whether refining his serve on the practice court or lining up a putt on the green, Nakashima remains a model of focus, discipline, and quiet dedication. For now, supporters will have to wait for his next official appearance. But it's safe to say that Brandon Nakashima is keeping his game—and his spirit—in good shape.Stay tuned for more updates as the tour rolls on.And with that, we conclude our first week here at Nakashima Nightly. In this episode I break down the women's final and the men's semifinals. Americans Amanda Anisimova & Taylor Fritz are still in the hunt for their first Wimbledon title. It's getting good.
It's Ladies' Semifinals Day at Wimbledon — and it did not disappoint. Amanda Anisimova delivered one of the performances of the Championships, battling past World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a stunning upset. Join Joel and Chris as they break down why Sabalenka keeps stumbling at the business end of Grand Slams and unpack the remarkable story of Anisimova's comeback after her mental health sabbatical. They also tackle the debate around Sabalenka's so-called “dominance” — and whether ranking points alone tell the whole story. In the other semifinal, Iga Swiatek put on a ruthless clinic to dismantle Belinda Bencic and book her spot in her first Wimbledon final. The duo dig into what's clicking in Swiatek's grass-court game, whether she's finally shed the “clay-court specialist” label, and how her experience in major finals could play a role against Anisimova, who's about to contest her first. Plus, they preview the Men's Semifinals: Novak Djokovic takes on Jannik Sinner in a Roland Garros rematch, while defending champion Carlos Alcaraz faces off against Taylor Fritz.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection and Pure Drive (2025) is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Tonight, we're getting to know Brandon NakashimaMeet Brandon Nakashima: The Rising Star of American TennisIf you follow tennis or have ever watched the U.S. Open or Wimbledon, you've probably heard about names like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Coco Gauff. But there's another name you should know—Brandon Nakashima, one of the top young American men's tennis players on the ATP Tour.Brandon might not be a household name just yet, but he's been working his way up through the rankings with quiet confidence, strong discipline, and a game built on consistency and control. He's not flashy like some players, but that's part of what makes him so good—he lets his tennis speak for itself.Early Life and BackgroundBrandon Nakashima was born on August 3, 2001, in San Diego, California. He started playing tennis at the age of 3 with his grandfather and quickly fell in love with the sport. By the time he was in his early teens, Brandon was one of the top junior players in the country. He's of Japanese and Vietnamese heritage, and family is a big part of his life. His calm personality on court is often linked to the way he was raised—focused, respectful, and humble.Instead of turning professional right away, Brandon made a smart move: he played college tennis. In 2019, he spent one season at the University of Virginia, one of the best college tennis programs in the country. Even though he was only 17, he dominated in college matches. After just one season, he decided he was ready to go pro.Turning Pro and Climbing the RankingsBrandon turned professional in 2019 and didn't waste any time making an impact. In his first full year on tour, he reached an ATP final and started playing in Grand Slam tournaments. By 2022, he was ranked inside the Top 50 in the world, which is a big deal for a player in his early 20s.That same year, he made it to the fourth round of the U.S. Open, one of tennis's biggest events. He also won the Next Gen ATP Finals, a tournament that features the best players under 21. Previous winners include top stars like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, so winning that event showed just how high Brandon's ceiling could be.Playing StyleBrandon isn't the loudest or most emotional player on court, but he's one of the most focused. He's known for his steady baseline play, meaning he does really well in long rallies from the back of the court. He hits the ball cleanly, especially with his two-handed backhand, which is one of his best weapons. He doesn't rely on power alone. Instead, Brandon uses smart tactics, great footwork, and a calm mindset to outplay his opponents. His game is built for hard courts, but he's also improving on grass and clay—two very different and challenging surfaces.Recent Results and What's NextIn 2025, Brandon reached the third round of Wimbledon, defeating China's Yunchaokete Bu and fellow American Reilly Opelka before falling to Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. These wins reminded fans that he's still a strong competitor with the potential to go even further. Now ranked in the Top 80 (as of July 2025), Brandon is focusing on the North American hard-court season, including big tournaments like the Citi Open, Cincinnati Masters, and the U.S. Open. Why He MattersAmerican men's tennis has been looking for its next big star since the days of legends like Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. While players like Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Ben Shelton are getting a lot of attention, Brandon Nakashima is part of that same group. He might be quieter and more low-key than some of his peers, but he's just as talented and just as hungry to succeed. If you're a fan of sports where hard work and mental strength matter just as much as physical ability, Brandon is a great player to follow. He represents a new generation of tennis players who combine skill with sportsmanship—and he's just getting started.
