It's been another long, hot day at Wimbledon with the fans on Centre Court and No. 1 Court. Join Joel and Kim as they discuss Sinner opening with some serious serving stats whilst Draper made light work of Baez who still hasn't won a tour level grass match since Eastbourne 2023. They also get to the bottom of the beef that broke Round 1 between Fritz and Perricard and just why their match was stopped last night and whether that was the right decision. However the seed exodus continued with last year's semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti and Halle champ Alexander Bublik suffering surprise defeats along with Alexander Zverev whose poor showings at Wimbledon continues. On the women's side, French Open champion Coco Gauff suffered another early exit at the hands of dangerous Dayan Yastremska. Defending champion Barbora Krejickova overcame a slow start against up and coming Alexandra Eala in three sets but two-time former champion Petra Kvitova made her final Wimbledon bow in defeat to Emma Navarro. It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Americans as recent Bad Homburg champion (and avid Call of Duty gamer) Jessica Pegula was dismissed along with Queen's semi finalist Qinwen Zheng. They also unveil the gang's Collect a Set predictions for the tournament and look ahead to Day 3 with Carlos Alcaraz returning against Britain's newest surprise package Oliver Tarvet.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Petra Kvitova 2025 Round 1 Interview Post Match After Loss to Emma Navarro
Day 2 at Wimbledon was hot, it was humid, and there was havoc as more seeds fell at the first hurdle. In Part 1 we discuss the shock exit of Coco Gauff at the hands of Dayana Yastremska and what it says about the difficulty of backing up a French Open win when Wimbledon is right around the corner. We also lost recent title winner Jessica Pegula and then Zheng Qinwen. Some big names did go through, most notably Iga Swiatek and defending champion Barbora Krejcikova. Finally, we cover Petra Kvitova's last match on the grass courts of SW19. In Part 2 (36m44s) we talk though the matches held over from last night, in which there were very different fates for a fang-tastic Fritz who fought back to beat Giovanni MPetshi Perricard, and a chastened Zverev who went down to Arthur Rinderknech. We discuss some difficult moments in his press conference and what he needs to change to find his form. There were emotional wins today for veterans Dan Evans and Gael Monfils, and whilst Musetti struggled with his post-injury form, big names Sinner, Draper and Djokovic all went through with relative ease. In Part 3 (72m08s) we look ahead to tomorrow's order of play and its tantalising line-up of second round matches, many of which are now not quite what we expected.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! With Wimbledon one week away, the grass court season is in full flow so join Joel, Kim and Chris at Tennis Weekly HQ as they look back on yet another enthralling week of tennis on the tour. Carlos Alcaraz continued his red hot streak to reclaim the Queen's title whilst former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova announced she was back with victory in Berlin, including a dominant performance over the World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Not to be outdone, Alexander Bublik continued his mid season purple patch with a Roland Garros reversal win over Jannik Sinner (who had the time to release some opera music with Andrea Bocelli) en route to the Halle title over Daniil Medvedev whose long wait for an ATP Tour title goes on. Elsewhere, Petra Kvitova announced her retirement from the sport, Nick Kyrgios was dropped from the BBC's Wimbledon coverage and the US Open announced their star studded Mixed doubles event. Headlined by the tantalising partnership of Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, the gang debate just what impact a singles based doubles event will have on the format or whether it's just one big gimmick. They also look ahead to the final lead up events in Eastbourne, Mallorca and Bad Homburg as Wimbledon qualifying gets underway.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Madison Keys has been a major champion for over a week now! This episode isn't really about that, but it bears repeating. Checking in on tennis in February, we've got Felix winning yet another indoor title, Mertens and Alexandrova making up for somewhat disappointing Australian Opens, and a whole heap of man drama at Davis Cup, featuring one of the only head-on collisions you'll see in tennis and the current state of ATP umpiring. This episode covers lots of odds and ends including Petra's imminent return(!), more from the AO men's final protestor, Ymer's unretirement, and the US Open's expansion. 0:35 WTA titlists Mertens and Alexandrova; Felix wins his second title of the year 6:55 Davis Cup: Garin gets literally run over by Bergs 17:40 Certainly not while wearing that moustache 20:00 Mikael Ymer did the opposite of “break up with your [tennis], I'm bored” 20:55 Petra Kvitova is coming back, maple syrup magnate Vasek Pospisil is leaving 28:05 One more thing about Madi 34:20 Craig Tiley's comments on the AusOpen protestor are … lacking 39:35 The US Open's manspread

For our fourth daily show from the US Open, Ben is joined by tennis writer AJ Eccles to discuss his return to live tennis at the US Open last night, and what the sport looks like from inside the stadium. What did it feel like being back at a crowded tennis tournament after years away? What are the differences between watching live and watching on TV And what was it like seeing his favorites Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova battle it out in one of the marquee matches of the first week?
September is a-calling, but I'm not through with August just yet as I close out the month and this rough stretch of sports that we've experienced as the latest podcast has arrived. On deck: (2:46) Let's all rejoice as we have finally made it out of the Sports Dead Zone, Part 2. Things will pick up considerably from here until the end of 2023. First up is what's going on in baseball. Will the pennant races heat up in September? I think we can say that's the case in the AL West as the Mariners, Astros and Rangers (separated by one game) will be in a rock fight to see who'll come out on top as division winners come October 1st. I'll break down who may have a leg up with the schedule as we get to the homestretch of the season. Don't look now, but the Phillies are laying in the weeds as a dangerous team in the NL. We saw it last year as they went on to play in the World Series. Do they have another deep postseason run in them? And I have to throw in my two cents about the Mets. Why did they give Max Scherzer a video tribute is beyond me? Is this how the sports world works in this day and age? My displeasure will rock your earbuds, headphones or speakers so you won't want to miss that. I'll keep you up to date on the latest playoff chase and look ahead to some interesting series this holiday weekend. (26:30) College football is back! The season begins in earnest over the next few days. The big question going into the new year, can Georgia three peat? I'll get into that and other top storylines (i.e. can Alabama get back to the college football playoff? Is there a Cinderella that can go to a final four?) with a rather predictable take on what to expect here in the college circuit over the next few months. (40:51) The Colts were unable to trade star RB Jonathan Taylor over the past couple of weeks. He'll be inactive until Week 5. Could he be showcased for a trade before the deadline in late October/early November? Bengals QB Joe Burrow is back on the field practicing. Was he being held out to protect himself for a big payday? (43:30) There have been some major upsets on the men's side at the US Open (#4 Holger Rune, #5 Casper Ruud and #7 Stefanos Tsitsipas) which will help towards another hotly anticipated matchup between Novak Djokovic-Carlos Alcaraz. A good story coming out of Flushing Meadow is what Caroline Wozniacki has done so far, moving onto the third round after an upset over #11 Petra Kvitova. Then there's Venus Williams. At 42 years of age and another first round exit, is it time for her to hang it up? (49:57) Lastly, I'll share when training camps open up for the NHL & NBA as the fall and winter sports will start to creep into our consciousness before you know it. There was a morning after feeling to Day 6 at the US Open following Serena Williams' defeat on Friday night. But it actually didn't take long for great matches to start happening again, bringing new life to the tournament and giving us plenty to talk about on the podcast. After a night off, Catherine re-joined David and Matt for all of her Serena vs Tomljanovic takes plus lots of chat about Saturday's action. We reflect some more on Serena's legacy before talking about final set tiebreak victories for Petra Kvitova and Andrey Rublev, their beaten opponents Garbine Muguruza and Denis Shapovalov, a surging Frances Tiafoe, an 18th consecutive win for Rafael Nadal against Richard Gasquet, and whether Marin Cilic can trouble Carlos Alcaraz. There's also discussion about some incredibly important words from Victoria Azarenka on the issue of safeguarding against abusive coaches and relationships on the WTA Tour. We could be in for a wild US Open. That's our big takeaway following Cincinnati where Borna Coric and Caroline Garcia won the titles. In our final show before leaving for New York we talk about Coric's sudden return to form, a mysterious but encouraging week for Stefanos Tsitsipas, who the US Open favourite is between Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev, whether Caroline Garcia is in The Mix after her incredible run of form continued, and where the likes of Emma Raducanu, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula and Petra Kvitova fit in to conversations about US Open contenders.FRIENDS OF THE TENNIS PODCAST: Friends help us to produce the show year-round, and receive exclusive access to bonus podcasts throughout the year, including Tennis Re-Lived, listener questions, and Grand Slam review shows. It was another eventful day at Wimbledon, with wins for Katie Boulter and Liam Broady standing out from a British perspective. Catherine, David and Matt talk about why they were pretty big deals and get stuck in to all of the other big talking points. Is Nick Kyrgios in The Mix? When will Iga Swiatek and Rafael Nadal start playing better? And how is round three shaping up? We also talk about the form of Petra Kvitova, leftover aggro from Harmony Tan and Tamara Korpatsch, and the Wimbledon roof policy.
