September is a-calling, but I'm not through with August just yet as I close out the month and this rough stretch of sports that we've experienced as the latest podcast has arrived. On deck: (2:46) Let's all rejoice as we have finally made it out of the Sports Dead Zone, Part 2. Things will pick up considerably from here until the end of 2023. First up is what's going on in baseball. Will the pennant races heat up in September? I think we can say that's the case in the AL West as the Mariners, Astros and Rangers (separated by one game) will be in a rock fight to see who'll come out on top as division winners come October 1st. I'll break down who may have a leg up with the schedule as we get to the homestretch of the season. Don't look now, but the Phillies are laying in the weeds as a dangerous team in the NL. We saw it last year as they went on to play in the World Series. Do they have another deep postseason run in them? And I have to throw in my two cents about the Mets. Why did they give Max Scherzer a video tribute is beyond me? Is this how the sports world works in this day and age? My displeasure will rock your earbuds, headphones or speakers so you won't want to miss that. I'll keep you up to date on the latest playoff chase and look ahead to some interesting series this holiday weekend. (26:30) College football is back! The season begins in earnest over the next few days. The big question going into the new year, can Georgia three peat? I'll get into that and other top storylines (i.e. can Alabama get back to the college football playoff? Is there a Cinderella that can go to a final four?) with a rather predictable take on what to expect here in the college circuit over the next few months. (40:51) The Colts were unable to trade star RB Jonathan Taylor over the past couple of weeks. He'll be inactive until Week 5. Could he be showcased for a trade before the deadline in late October/early November? Bengals QB Joe Burrow is back on the field practicing. Was he being held out to protect himself for a big payday? (43:30) There have been some major upsets on the men's side at the US Open (#4 Holger Rune, #5 Casper Ruud and #7 Stefanos Tsitsipas) which will help towards another hotly anticipated matchup between Novak Djokovic-Carlos Alcaraz. A good story coming out of Flushing Meadow is what Caroline Wozniacki has done so far, moving onto the third round after an upset over #11 Petra Kvitova. Then there's Venus Williams. At 42 years of age and another first round exit, is it time for her to hang it up? (49:57) Lastly, I'll share when training camps open up for the NHL & NBA as the fall and winter sports will start to creep into our consciousness before you know it. Patrick talks politics with tennis fan and former Communications Director for the RNC Doug Heye. How does Doug size up the current political climate, and does he see another Biden/Trump matchup in the next Presidential Election?A veteran of politics since 1990, Doug has served in leading communications positions in the House of Representatives and United States Senate, the Republican National Committee, as well as serving in the George W. Bush Administration. Heye most recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, where he garnered on the record bi-partisan praise for his team-building, communications and strategic planning abilities. Upon Heye's arrival in the Capitol in 2012, Roll Call quickly named Heye one of their “Fabulous 50,” noting Heye's ability to “set the tone and frame the debate” as someone “in the room when decisions are made.” In 2010, Heye served as communications director of the Republican National Committee. During these historic elections, Heye excelled in his handling of multiple large-scale public relations crises and pursuing an aggressive media strategy. Upon announcing his departure from the committee, Heye won unanimous, bi-partisan praise for his performance, being called a “pro's pro” in POLITICO by his counterpart at the Democratic National Committee for his handling of what CNN labeled “one of the most demanding jobs in Washington.”Heye is a sought-after commenter on political events and public policy, making more than two hundred appearances on national and international television networks, leading POLITICO to write in 2011, “when the red camera light turns on, Heye doesn't disappoint.” He has written for many publications, including U.S. News & World Report, POLITICO, The Hill and Capitol File magazine. On the 155th episode of the GreatBase Tennis podcast, Steve Smith interviews Constantinos Alevizopoulos. The two have never met in person. The young tennis coach from Greece first met Steve by studying a technical training tape and then thoroughly studying the free educational content provided by GreatBase via the Internet. The bulk of their conversation is about Stefanos Tsitsipas. Constantinos has an experience that so, so few have in tennis. He experienced being around a top-five ATP player during the player's formative years. After all, perhaps only a percent of a percent of a percent climb the ladder of pro tennis to such an elite level. Both Constantinos and Stefanos were taught by Giorgos Fountoukos, who used Vic Braden's educational materials as a resource. We are confident that players, parents, coaches, and general tennis enthusiasts will benefit by listening. Words starting with the letter P prevail. Stories of passion, persistency, perseverance, and precision are healthy medicine for those connected to a player with competitive goals.
While the women shone on Sunday, it was the men's matches which stood out on Monday. In the women's draw, there's chat about an inexplicable performance by Petra Kvitova, excitement for the 2022 final repeat between Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina, and a breakdown of how Madison Keys came back to beat Mirra Andreeva in three sets.
