It's a packed Monday on Nothing Major. The guys kick things off with the upcoming Battle of the Sexes in Dubai — plenty of curiosity (and a little doubt) about how seriously Kyrgios will take it. Djokovic's 101st career title takes center stage next, with the crew debating his decision to skip the year-end finals and what it means for the tour. There's also a shoutout to Learner Tien's title run in Metz and Venus Williams grabbing a wildcard into Auckland at 45 — still swinging. Then it's time for an ATP Finals breakdown, as we all agree one group is stronger than the other. On the WTA side, Elena Rybakina caps her season with record prize money and a clear message for 2026. In another episode that was already released as a video overnight for our Patreon backers, Ben and Tumaini wrap up what was a very busy Saturday in the world of tennis, including three simultaneous finals. We start with the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where Elena Rybakina won a very high-quality, high-level tournament that still looked small. How is the WTA going in Saudi Arabia after two years? Should they extend their stay there? Read Tumaini's column on the state of the WTA for more. We then discuss the down-to-the-wire (down-to-the-netcord?) drama around the race to Turin, where Novak Djokovic made Lorenzo Musetti and Felix Auger-Aliassime sweat it out until the last possible moment before withdrawing from Turin. Was that fair or foul? We also discuss the newly announced "Battle of the Sexes" between Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios, which we both think is a bad idea (but for a different perspective, read Ben's interview with the organizer, Stuart Duguid). And then for a fun finish, Tumaini waxes lyrical about his love for 1 Point Slam, which is returning in Melbourne next year in a much bigger form. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. And please check out Ben's new writing home, Bounces! And Tumaini's work at The Guardian!
WTA Finals delivered some entertaining matches – especially Amanda Anisimova vs Iga Swiatek – but it was Elena Rybakina who went unbeaten in Riyadh, seeing off world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final and collecting a $5.2m cheque. The final unfortunately made the news for the wrong reasons after Rybakina refused to take a picture with WTA CEO Portia Archer during the trophy ceremony. We discuss. On the men's side, the ATP Finals field was confirmed in the 25th hour after Novak Djokovic made everybody wait. The 24-time Grand Slam champion announced his withdrawal shortly after beating Lorenzo Musetti in a dramatic Athens final. We have three black men competing at the year-end event which is a first for Black Spin Global. In singles, World No 6 Ben Shelton and world No 8 Félix Auger-Aliassime are in the Bjorn Borg alongside Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev. In doubles, debutant Evan King and partner Christian Harrison, the eighth-ranked pair in the race, are in the John McEnroe group. To close, we share our predictions for Turin. The 19-year-old Canadian saw off Filipina Alexandra Eala and countrywoman Leylah Fernandez en route. Mboko, who started the year ranked 333 in the world, is now at a career high 18. The WTA Finals are well under way in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Defending champion Coco Gauff fell to Jessica Pegula in her opening match in the Stefanie Graf group. As did Jasmine Paolini, against Aryna Sabalenka. Gauff versus Paolini is now a must-win match for both. Madison Keys, playing for the first time since the US Open, is also in action. The Australian Open champion is in the Serena Williams group alongside Iga Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova and Elena Rybakina. In the doubles event, Paolini and Sara Errani are the top seeds in the Martina Navratilova group alongside debutant Asia Muhammad and Demi Schuurs. Second seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova are in the Liezel Huber group. Félix Auger-Aliassime played himself into an ATP Finals spot with his run to the Paris Masters final. The 25-year-old Canadian, who currently occupies the eighth and final place in the Race to Turin, lost to Jannik Sinner in Sunday's championship match. Sinner returns to No 1 in the world. World No 6 Ben Shelton also qualified for Turin following his run in Paris where he lost to eventual champion Sinner in the quarter-finals. To close, we share our thoughts on the ATP adding a 10th Masters event to the calendar from 2028.

Catherine, David and Matt are here to look back on all four quarter-finals at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen and ahead to the semis. Part one - Italy d. China 2-0 & Ukraine d. Spain 2-0. We discuss the remarkably similar comebacks pulled off by Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Jasmine Paolini for Italy, ponder whether Yuan Yue and Wang Xinyu choked for China, and praise the brilliant Ukrainian team. Can Marta Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina get it done in the singles for Ukraine against Italy? And what will they do if that tie goes to the doubles? Part two - USA d. Kazakhstan 2-1 & GB d. Japan 2-0 (from 30m31s). We cover the way in which USA came through despite strong performances from Yulia Putintseva and Elena Rybakina for Kazakhstan, the comments made by Taylor Townsend online mocking Chinese food and her subsequent apology, and whether Great Britain stand any chance of progressing through to the final despite a dominant win against Japan. Part one - Women's matches. We start by covering Marketa Vondrousova's superb performance to beat Elena Rybakina and Barbora Krejcikova remarkable escape act against Taylor Townsend. How did Vondrousova negate Rybakina? How did Krejcikova save the 8 match points? And how dangerous are both players going to be for Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals? Part two - Men's matches (31:18). The shot of the day came from - who else? - Carlos Alcaraz with a behind-the-back half volley. We describe that moment, look ahead to Novak Djokovic vs Taylor Fritz after both players hit pretty much top gear on Sunday, and take stock of yet another poor performance from Tomas Machac on a big stage. Part three - Day 9 Order of Play (50:19).Tickets are now on General Sale for The Tennis Podcast - Live in Wrexham on Wednesday October 22nd! Part one - Women's results. The big story on day four was Taylor Townsend's victory over Jelena Ostapenko and, in particular, what Ostapenko said to Townsend. We cover the situation in full, including what unfolded on court, Ostapenko's statements on Instagram, and the wonderful way Townsend spoke about it all in her press conference. Elsewhere, there's chat about a third round match to come between Emma Raducanu and Elena Rybakina, and Aryna Sabalenka extending her career phenomenal tiebreak record. Part two - Men's results (32:27). We start with the news that Jack Draper has withdrawn and discuss where he should go from here. Catherine, David and Matt are together at Flushing Meadows to dissect the US Open draws and analyse what's been said on media day. Part one - Women's draw. We cover why we think this draw is good news for Iga Swiatek, the potential for Elena Rybakina to be a problem for Aryna Sabalenka, and why Victoria Mboko could come through a wide open section. There's also chat about Coco Gauff hiring bio mechanist Gavin MacMillan to help her serve and David explains why he's feeling bullish about Naomi Osaka's chances. Part two - Men's draw (38:16). The big question from the men's draw is whether anyone can stop Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. We analyse their draws and consider the paths of Novak Djokovic, Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev. Part three - Qualifying (1:06:16). We talk about Dino Prizmic and Fran Jones making their way through qualifying and into the main draw. Catherine, David and Matt were live in New York to look back on the opening day of the US Open Mixed Doubles and the closing stages of Cincinnati. Moving onto Cincinnati, has Iga Swiatek made herself the US Open favourite after her title there? We discuss her victory over Jasmine Paolini in the final, the confidence she's playing with after Wimbledon, and the way she's turned her head-to-head with Elena Rybakina around. There's also chat about where Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff are at heading into New York. On the men's side, how much did we actually learn after Jannik Sinner was forced to retire against Carlos Alcaraz in the Cincinnati final? Finally, we cover the shocking prize money discrepancy that still exists in Cincinnati, a couple of US Open talking points, and the retirement of Kyle Edmund.
