Thousands of (mostly) women have gone to a doc because they don't feel like themselves only to leave frustrated and sick to death of hearing, "This is what happens at your age", or "It's all in your head, nothing's wrong." They—maybe you—have said things like: I'm gaining weight, I'm cold all the time, my hair is getting thin, my sleep is awful, I'm in a fog. To be fair to the docs who hear these kinds of complaints, the cause could be one of many problems. Depending on your age they may get chalked up to peri-menopause though feeling cold is not on that menu. Too much iron, low B12, certain medications, toxins, and viruses can also be to blame. But we're here to talk about the one problem that captures all of those symptoms to a T and adds many more: Hypothyroidism. If you've Googled your symptoms Hypothyroidism may have come up more than once. Women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems. One woman in eight will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime. Naturally you'd want to find out if in fact your thyroid is healthy or in need of support. If you've had the above mentioned kind of doc visit and still feel like crapola, you are not alone. Help is here. If you haven't yet gone to a doc because you don't know what to expect or what to ask for, this Shortie is for you. And if you don't want to listen--it's only 14 minutes long--there's always a transcript and the resources below are great places to get all the information you need to understand the various forms of thyroid disease, how to get help, and what to ask your doctor for if you don't have someone who is fluent in thyroid restoration. https://chriskresser.com/ (Dr. Chris Kresser) for information on all things functional medicine but specific to this post, he has a great ebook on why people get thyroid disease, what stresses out the thyroid, testing, meds, herbs, etc. https://www.mary-shomon.com/ (Mary Shomon) is a lay person but decades long thyroid health advocate and coach for those struggling with hypothyroidism. She has books, runs classes, and offers coaching including reading thyroid labs. I interviewed her for this podcast. https://rebelliouswellnessover50.com/episode-9-your-thyroid-may-need-attention/ (Find it here.) https://thyroidpharmacist.com/ (Izabella Wentz) specializes in Hashimotos thyroiditis which is the autoimmune form of hypothyroidism. She recommends lifestyle, natural foods and supplements for healing and dealing with Hashi's. https://www.canaryclub.org/coaches/thyroidpower-thyroid-power-richard-shames-md (Dr. Richard Shames,) as mentioned above, is a thyroid expert who offers virtual consultations after testing. He was the first doc I consulted after interviewing him for a summit and I'm forever grateful for his insights and recommendations. You might want to start with his book, https://thyroidpower.com/feeling-fat-fuzzy-or-frazzled/ (Thyroid Mind Power, The Proven Cure of Hormone-Related Depression and Memory Loss.) Finally, https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/ (Stop The Thyroid Madness), Janie Bowthorpe's website. In her words, the INFORMATIONAL MOTHERSHIP WEBSITE OF REPORTED PATIENT EXPERIENCES, OBSERVATIONS, AND WISDOM GAINED WORLDWIDE! It's a haven for those who can't get treated satisfactorily or who need ammo to take to a doc in what else might be a better drug or dose for them. You feel heard here and will get answers. And if you'd like to have a conversation about any of this https://calendly.com/gregoryanne/rebellious-wellness-intro-call (grab a spot on my calendar). There is no charge. You can tell me what you are experiencing, what you've tried, and I'll point you in the right direction. Hair loss, cold hands and feel and feeling tired are the big three for a sluggish thyroid. But relapsing gut issues, slow motility, sleep disruption, brain fog, slow metabolism, inflammation, low mood or anxiety, and dry skin can all be symptoms of a sluggish thyroid.  In this episode, we talk about how we've had to change how we're approaching thyroid health in practice to ensure clients feel their best and maintain their results.  We talk about “dead ringers” of thyroid symptoms, blood versus tissue labs, thyroid nutrient cofactors and steps to take if you're checking the boxes but not getting answers yet.  If you're experiencing the issues mentioned in this episode (tired, gut symptoms, etc) and want testing + support, you can get it from our program Food Sensitivity Solutions & The Fatigue Fix. In it, we correct imbalances in the gut with testing and fill in the nutrient gaps (based on testing) depriving the thyroid of working properly.  ****Learn more & apply here: https://www.christabiegler.com/fss  This episode is sponsored by RUPA Health, my favorite lab concierge service that brings over 25 different functional medicine labs to one dashboard and saves me loads of time with it's amazing interface and saves my clients money by being a low cost blood lab facilitating option.  If you're a health practitioner, get a free account at https://www.rupahealth.com and let them know I sent you! Books mentioned: Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms by Datis Kharrazian   Overcoming Thyroid Disorders by David Brownstein, MD Stop the Thyroid Maddness II, compiled and edited by Janie Bowthorpe

Years ago, Janie Bowthorpe became a hypothyroid patient. And like millions, she was put on a T4-only medicine like Synthroid and told it was would change her life. But it didn't. Janie spent the next 20 years getting worse on nothing but T4 with growing problems. And each doctor she saw said "It's not your thyroid" causing you all those problems as they did more and more tests. She was steps away from applying for Social Security Disability.  But Janie didn't buy that it wasn't her thyroid. On her own, she found out about having T3 in her treatment with natural desiccated thyroid. On her own, she found a doctor to let her get on desiccated thyroid. Then on her own, she found a second doctor to let her raise it. And her life made a complete and total turn around.   With those experiences under her belt, Janie Bowthorpe started the first and only patient-to-patient  movement called Stop the Thyroid Madness. All Janie's experiences challenged the way the medical system has been testing and treating thyroid disease. Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.   On this episode we’re going to wrap up our examination of current thyroid disease issues. Have you ever wondered if it is okay to take higher doses of thyroid medication, even if your blood tests say you’re getting too much? Many patients say that they don’t feel better until their hormone levels are much higher than is recommended. I’m joined today by Janie Bowthorpe, thyroid patient activist and author who feels it is important to disregard blood test results. Her own health was compromised when she developed thyroid disease and it wasn’t until she started dosing natural thyroid medication more accurately that she started to feel better. She has joined me to share her opinions on the best way to diagnose and treat thyroid disease, and to consider the many factors that affect thyroid health, including iron levels, cortisol problems, TSH levels, and adrenal problems. Janie is passionate about her calling and I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about her perspective and experiences as an advocate for thyroid patients.    After the interview, I will follow-up on the key points of our conversation. I want you to consider the need for conducting high-quality studies and of the importance of understanding the many side effects and complications that may not be highlighted in patient-shared experiences. To do so, I will give you an overview of several studies regarding low TSH, each of which included a look at how low TSH levels can affect your body’s ability to manage free radicals, bone health, cardiovascular health, and total mortality rates. Once the facts are laid out, I will share my opinion on this important topic of thyroid disease and medication.   Key Takeaways: [:35] Today’s topic is the third of three segments on the topic of thyroid disease. [1:55] Introducing Janie Bowthorpe, who shares the health and medical experiences that led her to becoming a thyroid advocate. [5:23] The symptoms that led Janie to the diagnosis of thyroid disease only got worse over time, but she quickly she experienced a turnaround and stabilization once she started natural thyroid medication. [10:28] Janie’s calling to be an advocate for thyroid patients and a look at how her observations were reflected in large numbers of patients over time. [14:32] Defining ‘optimal doses’ in thyroid patients using dessicated thyroid means people feeling their best and staying that way. [20:27] Achieving optimal doses and identifying thyroid hormone resistance through patterns of groups of patients and genetic testing. [25:41] What are the concerns that come with TSH levels that are too low or too high? How do inadequate iron and cortisol problems play into these concerns? [30:43] Ferritin versus serum iron and considering the presence of inflammation and cortisol problems. [35:46] Are the benefits associated with TSH suppression worth the long-term health risks?  [39:40] Studies that have disregarded adrenal problems may not be as telling as patient-shared experiences. [43:54] Wrapping up with Janie Bowthorpe and her testimony of the importance of patients listening to other patients. [45:57] Should you ignore your TSH? Understanding your TSH as your pituitary gland telling your thyroid to work, and a look at what patients have experienced in trying to optimize it’s levels.  [48:47] My five criteria for reviewing evidence, and the importance of placing more weight on the evidence that is independent of the source it came from. [51:30] Understanding the treatment that thyroid patients have received from the medical community and a host of secondary problems that can contribute to feeling unwell despite thyroid stability. [54:08] What high-quality studies have been conducted to increase our understanding of what happens to people with low TSH levels? [59:02] Study results include redox pathways and the body’s antioxidant capacity, bone health as it relates to lumbar spine density and bone age, increase in inflammation, and increased mortality rates relative to decreasing TSH scores. [1:06:02] My recommendation for thyroid patients — based on the facts. [1:07:58] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? about Stop the Thyroid Madness: A Patient Revolution Against Decades of Inferior Treatment With even more pages, a new chapter on foods and supplements, and additions throughout the entire book, this informative Second Edition of the ever-popular classic, "Stop the Thyroid Madness: A Patient Revolution Against Decades of Inferior Treatment", continues to break ground as the ONLY thyroid patient-to-patient book on the market. It addresses a 60+ year, international thyroid treatment scandal involving the use of T4-only medications like Synthroid and other T4-only meds, as well as the TSH lab test--both which have left hundreds of millions worldwide either undiagnosed or undertreated. It explains in detail: 1) what medications work far better and why; 2) which labwork is better than others, and how to read the results (i.e., it has nothing to do with just being "in range"); 3) how a huge body of thyroid patients fall into adrenal fatigue/HPA dysfunction as a result of poor treatment by doctors, plus what patients have learned in treating it; 4) a long list of causes of hypothyroidism; 5) cutting-edge treatment of Hashimotos's disease and gluten intolerance; 6) why patients need to be aware of Reverse T3, plus how to treat it; 7) how to discover and treat low levels of Vit. D, B12, ferritin and iron, iodine and more deficiencies which doctors can miss. As always, this "Bible of Thyroid Treatment", as successfully experienced by patients worldwide, strives to educate the reader in order to bring this on-going and scandal-breaking information into doctors offices worldwide, and create needed change. Janie Bowthorpe joins us today as we are digging into the connection between the thyroid and fertility. For 20 years, Janie A. Bowthorpe suffered at the hands of doctors. Why? They failed to see the connection between her chronic and debilitating symptoms and forcing her body to live for conversion alone, aka T4-only like Synthroid. The examining room responses were always along the lines of “You are normal” and “It’s something else besides your thyroid”. All the latter meant money down the drain, frustrating and false pronouncements by doctors, painful tests, dead ends, and the dark realization she would finally have to apply for Social Security Disability. But Bowthorpe proved them all wrong in 2002. She switched to Natural Desiccated Thyroid, raised and found her optimal amount, and every single debilitating symptom went completely away. That change spurred her to create the movement later called Stop the Thyroid Madness, aka STTM. What makes the Stop the Thyroid Madness movement different from other websites and books? It's near totally about 16 years of reported patient experiences in getting well, and the wisdom gained from those experiences. The website is stopthethyroidmadness.com plus a facebook page of the same name. And there are also two books--the most widely read thyroid books on the market for years: the revised Stop the Thyroid Madness: A Patient Revolution Against Decades of Inferior Thyroid Treatment (aka STTM I), and also Stop the Thyroid Madness II: How Thyroid Experts are Challenging Ineffective Treatments and Improving the Lives of Patients (aka STTM II). Tim Gray - Entrepreneur & Health Optimization Expert Our guest this week is Tim Gray. Tim is a seriously interesting person and deeply committed biohacker/health optimization expert. As you’ll learn, Tim and T.A. met by happenstance at Baby Bathwater—an entrepreneurial event hosted in Croatia—where they quickly realized their shared enthusiasm for science, technology, and longevity. Tim’s approach to health optimization stems from his passion and commitment to everything he does; what Tim calls his “all-in or nothing” mentality. As an entrepreneur, Tim is a specialist in psychology, neuro marketing, cognitive hypnotherapy, conversion rate optimization and SEO. His expertise in digital marketing is rooted in his own experiences as the founder of a very successful e-commerce business, and over 13 years experience of search engine marketing and psychology. He has a keen interest in body language and human behavior led him to study and gain various Oxford University recognized qualifications, including a Diploma in Cognitive Hypnotherapy (HPD), a Master Practitioner certification in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and NVQ in Business Management. His growing interest in optimal health, having a sharp and clear mind (and “biohacking”) has also led him to open the first Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy clinic in London. In this episode of How to Live to 200, T.A. explores some really interesting and less popular areas with Tim. We ask and answer questions on biohacking, mercury poisoning, gut bacteria, and more. Here’s a sample of what we cover: How Tim used the Ketogenic diet and Bulletproof Coffee to kickstart his journey to biohacking and health optimization Why Tim doesn’t like the term “biohacker” What symptoms allow him to easily detect mercury toxicity in strangers What tests Tim recommends to measure your mercury levels What foods to avoid if you’re worried about mercury toxicity What farm-raised salmon can do to your body and brain Should you have your old fillings removed? Tim’s personal gut microbiome optimization techniques What Tim data currently tracks and how he decides what to pay attention to How you can use Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to thrive How do you learn to enjoy your current moment while still striving for improved health There’s so much great info packed into this episode, so don’t be surprised if you need to take a second listen to capture all of Tim’s knowledge. Join host Elise Marquam Jahns as she chats with Janie Bowthorpe, a Thyroid Patient Activist, author of the book Stop the Thyroid Madness, and owner of “Stop the Thyroid Madness” blog.  When Janie Bowthorpe was 27 years old, she had 8 illnesses in nine months culminating with pneumonia. The same chronic illness scenario occurred 2 years later after the birth of her third child. By 31, she was diagnosed with borderline hypothyroid and put on Synthroid, but her pain and suffering continued for many more years. By 2002, she finally began the process of applying for Social Security Disability. It was during this time Janie realized the problem was most likely her thyroid. When she switched to natural desiccated thyroid, her life changed. She rapidly regained her energy and stamina and saw all her symptoms disappear--which became the impetus for the Stop the Thyroid Madness blog and book.   Janie’s goal is to be a catalyst for a complete change in thyroid treatment and management by dedicating her work to serve millions of thyroid patients all over the world. Janie A. Bowthorpe, M.Ed, has spent years as one of the most well-known and heartfelt Thyroid Patient Advocates, fighting for better thyroid care. And what has made her different from others who claim the same title?  It's her unique focus, which has always been about reported patient experiences and the wisdom gained from those experiences ... rather than strong opinions or courting the medical establishment. Like millions worldwide, Janie was a 20-year victim of poor treatment with T4-only meds and the use of the TSH lab test, only to have a miraculous turnaround in the use of Natural Desiccated Thyroid. Those experiences propelled her to represent patients worldwide, totally based on their experiences and wisdom. She is the author of the book, Stop the Thyroid Madness. In today’s show, we talk about why women who show signs of hypothyroidism often have the hardest time getting support from their doctors; whether it's lab work or getting prescriptions for thyroid medication (other than Synthroid®). We get to the bottom of the common issue of why a woman can feel terrible even if she has "normal" lab results, and what she can do if her doctor isn't supporting her mission to get to the underlying cause. Topics discussed in today's episode What events led to Janie writing her book, Stop the Thyroid Madness? Janie talks about the common symptoms of continued Hypothyroidism Why the typical tests doctors run Hypothyroidism are not good enough Why the common treatments for Hypothyroidism don’t usually work How free T3 and T4 levels are better indicators of your thyroid health Janie’s advice about how to handle resistance from physicians with regards to testing Why the commonly prescribed medication, Synthroid®, doesn’t always help What desiccated thyroid is and how it compares to Synthroid® What can cause symptoms to get worse after taking desiccated thyroid? What are some underlying causes of Hypothyroidism and can it be cured? Janie’s advice for people who’ve had trouble finding a doctor who’ll truly work with them The one thing Janie wants listeners to know The one myth about Hypothyroidism Janie wants to address Connect with Janie You can connect with Janie on her Website and on Facebook Resources mentioned Stop the Thyroid Madness Website Stop the Thyroid Madness eBooks Stop the Thyroid Madness: Lab Values Stop the Thyroid Madness: Recommended Lab Work Stop the Thyroid Madness: Natural Thyroid 101 Stop the Thyroid Madness Facebook Page FFP 104 | Birth Control Pills From Your Doctor’s Perspective | Why Your Physician isn’t Looking at the Root Cause | Alternative Medicine for Women | Dr. Miranda Naylor Join the community!
