Iodine is a critical nutrient for thyroid function, yet there is a lot of controversy around iodine and thyroid health. Unlike other nutrients, iodine is selectively taken up by the parts of the body that use it. This generally means that when it's in low supply, more is pulled in, and when there's too much, it's blocked from coming in. This creates the iodine paradox, where both excessive and insufficient iodine can lead to thyroid dysfunction. For people with autoimmune thyroid conditions, their genetic predispositions can impact how their bodies respond to iodine. So, while some people with thyroid conditions can tolerate and even benefit from iodine supplementation, for others, it can be problematic.Today, I'm joined by Dr. Alan Christianson, a board-certified naturopathic endocrinologist and author of the Thyroid Reset Diet, to talk about iodine, thyroid health, and thyroid antibodies. In this conversation, Dr. Christianson and I discuss iodine's role in thyroid health, the complexities of iodine uptake, genetic influences, potential risks of excessive iodine intake, the significance of thyroid antibodies, the risks and benefits of thyroid medication, and more. Plants have the power to help restore your health—as long as you know how to use them! And thankfully, my friend Dr. Alan Christianson is back on the podcast to tell us exactly how to take advantage of nature's wisdom to help restore hormonal balance.  We kick off the episode by busting the myth that plants are a food to fear. On the contrary, Dr. Alan posits that thanks to a “full on arms race” in the plant kingdom, your body simply can't operate at its full capacity without them. And in his new book, The Hormone Healing Cookbook, you're going to learn exactly how to foster that connection. I chat with Dr. Alan about how he scoured the latest research to find ways that plants can promote hormone balance naturally, helping with symptoms ranging from insomnia to hot flashes to weight gain. As a lazy chef myself, I'm thrilled to report that he uncovered the ways humble, easy-to-use ingredients like oats, onions, figs, and beets can improve your health. (I'll admit there's one recipe that wouldn't be my personal fave, but tune in to see if it's your new go-to!)  He also shares a carb rule of thumb that will make it easier for you to make smart diet choices, and a totally free quiz that highlights the hormonal imbalances his recipes may help minimize. No matter the topic, Dr. Alan always has fascinating yet accessible info to provide—and this episode is no exception.  Full show notes: jjvirgin.com/foodquiz  Learn more about Dr. Alan Christianson here: https://www.drchristianson.com The Hormone Healing Cookbook: https://amzn.to/3qieVeY Episode 219: How to Lose Weight With Thyroid Disease With Dr. Alan Christianson: https://jjvirgin.com/main-podcast/thyroid-disease-dr-christianson-219/  Episode 242: What About Iodine and Breast Health? If you have autoimmunity, there may be easy answers. Dr. Sauer (think sour like lemon) shared many simple solutions that have helped his patients.    If you've heard enough long medical words, you'll enjoy this episode.  Autoimmune diseases are on the rise and not just a result of genetics, but also physical, chemical, and emotional stress that tax the body and lead to various diseases such as Hashimoto's, Celiac, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, brain fog, and others. Women between 35-60 years old are particularly susceptible due to their tendency to prioritize others over themselves, leading to hormonal imbalances and excessive stress.   Join us in this interview with Dr. Sauer as he sheds light on autoimmune diseases and how a holistic approach to lifestyle can help prevent and manage these conditions. Without it, life can feel like going through the motions. That is how Forrest felt when he was in his early 20s, feeling fat, sick, and depressed, it was even while getting his doctorate in chiropractic he was told "this is how life was". It wasn't until a friend asked him to attend a seminar on nutrition did he get his first exposure to the world of wellness. Post surgery recovery [18:41] Marianna D. says: Hey Robb and Nikki, I am headed into week two of a total of four weeks of post surgery restrictions. I had a bladder sling procedure for incontinence. The doctor ordered walking only for exercise. I specifically asked about upper body workouts and was told no go, which makes sense because upper body almost always involves core muscles. I'm a 71 yo female who normally spends over an hour every other day lifting heavy things in the gym. Tips please on how to avoid muscle loss, particularly advice on protein consumption. Advice on collagen intake desired as well. Thanks.   2. Thyroid & Iodine [22:41] Marilee says: Hi Robb & Nicki, I recently listened to a podcast with Dr. Alan Christianson and read his book The Thyroid Reset Diet. His premise as I understand it is that most auto-immune and hypo-thyroid conditions are due to an excess of iodine in the body and can resolve once that iodine is depleted/used up by going on a low iodine diet. This includes primarily removing salt (unless clearly non-iodized or kosher), egg yolks and dairy although there are many other sources listed including certain skin care products. My labs have indicated the need for treatment for hypo for many years as well as having autoimmune thyroid disease. However any prescription thyroid medicine as well as thyroid support supplements leave me feeling much worse so I have been untreated for several years. While I don't feel nearly as bad as my labs would indicate I also don't feel great. I would like to know what you think of this idea and whether you think his eating plan would help. Thanks for all you do. Guermo Ruiz https://www.3030strong.com/ Isabella Wentz https://thyroidpharmacist.com/   3. Do ketones make you wired? [27:30] Alex says: I am sensitive to stimulants in the afternoon. Especially caffeine, even carnitine. I am looking for something to take in the afternoon for a pick me up at work and eventually for an evening workout (after work). I am tempted to try ketones to boost my brain and energy. I am also on the Shoemaker protocol to recover from mold illness. I am not opposed to making my own stack. I have an anti-fatigue stack that helps me through the morning crash. But I need a 3pm stack, because I start to crash hard around then. I have yet to rule out taking electrolytes, cordyceps and Lions Mane. https://drinkkenetik.com/ Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. How Nutrition Can Reverse Thyroid Disease & Cause Weight Loss - Part 2 Dr. Alan Christianson has worked with people with thyroid disease for 25 years. He has developed nutritional interventions to help reverse the disease. In this podcast, he speaks with health seeker Adiel Gorel about overfat, fatty liver, iodine toxicity and their consequences, and the Metabolism Reset Diet.   Key Insights: Women are six to ten times more likely to have thyroid disease. When people are diagnosed they are usually prescribed a drug for the rest of their lives, but this may be unnecessary. Dr. Christianson explains the concept of overfat. This is different from merely being overweight or obese. This means having fat in the wrong places, causing health problems. He explains how it is sometimes possible to reverse thyroid issues or Hashimoto's by making diet changes, and particularly by bringing iodine levels below a certain threshold. Modern life with its food habits, exposure to plastic derivatives and toxic metals, chronic stress, and disturbance in sleep timings has caused obesity and made weight loss difficult. While age slows down the metabolism and causes us to lose muscle mass, not all chronic disease and dysfunction is due to aging. Many other factors contribute to this. Author, Investment Expert and Wellness Advocate Adiel Gorel isn't just an expert in his chosen fields but also a storyteller who makes complex issues easily accessible. Tune in to his show where he addresses diverse issues with a single aim to improve quality of life.    Have questions? Millions of people are affected by autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's. If you're one of them, you know how hard it is to find information about what you can do to feel better. I’m here with someone I deeply admire and I’m incredibly grateful for. Dr. Alan Christianson is a naturopathic endocrinologist who focuses on thyroid function and specifically Hashimoto’s (which I had) as well as hypothyroidism and Graves’ disease.
