And after the tragic discovery of the murdered child, German born Bruno Richard Hauptmann was arrested and tried for the crime, This would lead to the "trial of the century" and 90 years later people still question many aspects of this bizarre and tragic case. Was justice served? Why was there somuch "strangeness" surrounding the investigation and trial? The great Janis Wilson, crime historian, trial attorney, professor, TV Presenter and author joins us to discuss the case and subsequent trial... and what a story it is!!! At last count, Sonoma County had over twenty active theatre companies, ranging from the nomadic Pegasus Theatre Company to the theatre departments of the two local institutions of higher learning. From Petaluma to Cloverdale, from Monte Rio to Sonoma, the options available for those interested in live theatre in this county are plentiful. Two years ago, four Sonoma County based theatre critics – including your host - gathered to discuss the possibility of celebrating the best of local theatre through an awards process. All were members of the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, an organization that has for the past 41 years recognized excellence in theatre produced in the nine bay area counties with an annual awards ceremony. Theatre Bay Area, the largest regional theatre service organization in North America, started their own awards program four years ago, also for productions throughout the Bay Area. While Sonoma County has made a respectable showing in these awards over the past few years – including two wins for Santa Rosa’s Left Edge Theatre at the recent TBA Awards - the local critics thought there was enough theatre produced in this county to warrant their own honors. Thus was born the Marquee Theater Journalists Association and the MTJA Awards, named for the legendary Marquee Theatre of Santa Rosa where many local artists began their theatrical careers. Awards are given in fifteen categories that recognize outstanding work in Sonoma County productions that opened from September of the previous year to August of the current year. One major difference with the MTJA Awards is that the performance categories are non-gender specific. There are awards for outstanding lead performances and awards for outstanding supporting performances – all performers are considered for each award. The terms “actor” and “actress” are nowhere to be found on the Award certificates. The awards are separated by genre, with categories recognizing the differences between dramas, comedies, and musicals. Nominations for the 2nd Annual MTJA Awards were announced in mid-September with the awards ceremony scheduled for mid-October. Wellllll, that didn’t happen but this past Monday the Sonoma County theatre community had the opportunity to gather at the Confluence Taproom & Lounge in Santa Rosa and celebrate the past year in theatre. Here are the recipients of this year’s MTJA Awards: Outstanding Poster/Program Design Pagliacci (Victoria Von Thal, Cinnabar Theater) Outstanding Set Design Peter Crompton (In the Heights, SRJC) Outstanding Costume Design Maci Cae Hosler (Fairyworlds!, 6th Street Playhouse) Outstanding Light Design Eddy Hansen (The Sugar Bean Sisters, Spreckels Theatre Company) Outstanding Sound Design Doug Faxon (The Birds, Main Stage West) Outstanding Choreography Sam Browne, Casandra Hillman, Anakarina Swanson (In the Heights, SRJC) Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Drama Rose Roberts (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Main Stage West) Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Musical Erik Weiss (You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, 6th Street Playhouse) Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Comedy Heather Gordon (The Money Shot, Left Edge Theater) Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical Daniela Innocenti-Beem (Gypsy, Sonoma Arts Live) Outstanding Lead Performance in a Comedy Melissa Claire (Becky’s New Car, Sonoma Arts Live) Outstanding Lead Performance in a Drama Alan Kaplan (Visiting Mr. Green, 6th Street Playhouse) Outstanding Musical Production In the Heights (John Shillington, director; Janis Wilson, musical director; SRJC) Outstanding Comedy Production Becky’s New Car (Carl Jordan, director; Sonoma Arts Live) Outstanding Drama Production Visiting Mr. Green (David L. Well, Monday night was a good night for North Bay theater people. At the 39th annual San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Awards, a batch of Sonoma County theaters were honored, with some very talented actors, directors and theater artists walking the steps up to claim awards for their work in 2014. Winners included Denise Elia-Yen for her snappy portrayal of Annie Oakley in Spreckel’s Performing arts Center’s brilliantly presented production of "Annie Get Your Gun." Other North Bay actresses who picked up awards included Abbey Lee, honored for her outrageous portrayal of an oversexed gangster’s moll in "Victor/Victoria," and Rebekkah Pearson for playing the title role in "Thoroughly Modern Mille," both of those shows at 6th Street Playhouse. 6th Street saw a few more of its artists win awards: Anthony Guzman and Evan Attwood both picked up wins for "Thoroughly Modern Mille," and for the same show Joseph Favalora was honored for his choreography. And back to Spreckels, Mary Gannon Graham was awarded for her splendidly goofy turn as a wacky modern day witch in "Bell, Book and Candle," and Jeff Coté picked up a win for the title role in Gene Abravaya’s "The Book of Matthew (Liebowitz)." Oh, and Janis Wilson won for musical direction of "Annie get Your Gun." Main Stage West, in Sebastopol, also saw a few wins, beginning with singer-songwriter Si Kahn, for best original music for his show "Mother Jones in Heaven." Also honored were Tyler Costin for his fine work in "Vanya and Sonja and Masha and Spike," and for Albert Casselhoff, for his sound design on "T.I.C. (Trenchcoat in Common)." And for Cinnabar Theater, the love continued with wins for Mary Chun, for her musical direction of last year’s "Fiddler on the Roof," with the entire cast of "Of Mice and Men" winning for best ensemble. And speaking of love, local actor, writer, director Dezi Gallegos, who’s just nineteen, picked up a special award, the first ever Annette Lust Award, given to young theater artists who show incredible promise and potential. His acceptance speech, promising to find the next young dreamer and help them follow their passions, had the audience crying and cheering. That’s just a few of the winners in the North Bay. For the full list, go to the Cristics Circle website at S-F-B-A-T-C-C dot.org, standing, of course, for San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Circle. And while we’re celebrating the art of theater, let me just mention two upcoming shows about the art of theater, in one form or another. Opening this weekend, down in San Rafael, is a little thing called "[Title of Show], in brackets." It’s a musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical, and when they invite two talented women to join them, it becomes a show about four people creating a musical about four people creating a musical, and then there are songs. Songs about writing songs. As it so happens, the cast of four were ALL nominated for awards Monday night, for previous works, and two of them, including the aforementioned Abbey Lee. It runs March 13-28 at Belrose theater, presented by Marin Onstage, marinonstage.com. The show sounds like a blast, as does "Deathtrap," opening in a couple of weeks at Spreckels performing arts Center. It’s the story of dueling playwrights who might just be trying to kill each other. It runs March 20 through April 5. Who knows, maybe next year these shows will be picking up awards of their own. And either way, as was recently stated, theater awards are just a party game. Getting to make theater, that’s the real party. I’m David Templeton, Second Row Center, for KRCB.

"Carousel" - February 18, 2015

KRCB-FM: Second Row Center

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2015 4:00

"Carousel," the second musical created by the legendary Rogers & Hammerstein, is noted today for two major things. One - it’s the show from which we gained the songs "June is Bustin’ Out All Over," and "You'll Never Walk Alone," sometimes alternately known as "When You Walk Through a Storm," a song without which funerals, church services, graduations, and high school music recitals would have been a very different experience over the last 70 years. The SECOND Thing "Carousel" is usually noted for is, well, the plot of the 1945 musical is kinda weird and sort of unsettling, But Hey, at least it’s got that 'Storm' song. And didn’t Elvis have a huge hit with that song? Yes, he did. In truth, "Carousel," a huge hit when it first spun onto Broadway with John Raitt and Jan Clayton in the leads, has a LOT of great songs, some of which you might even have heard before. "June is Bustin’ Out All Over," for what it’s worth, has been bustin‘ into movies, Bugs Bunny cartoons, and major league baseball commercials ever since it first hit the stage. Then there’s, "If You Loved Me," covered on record albums hundreds of times by everyone from Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Perry Como to Art Garfunkel, Chad & Jeremy and Sammy Davis Jr. And of course, though it has no lyrics and almost no one knows its name, this piece of music, "The Carousel Waltz," is one of the most famous pieces of circus music ever written, gracing zillions of music boxes for seven decades. Less famous, but worth noting is "Real Nice Clambake," which gave us the indelible lyric, "This was a real nice clambake/we're mighty glad we came/the vittles we et/were good, you bet/the company was the same." Man, that’s poetry. Actually, all kidding aside, that IS poetry. Rogers & Hammerstein’s commitment to capturing the vernacular of their characters was unheard of on the Broadway musical stage before R&H arrived with "Oklahoma," "South Pacific," "The King & I," and "Carousel." Oh, by the way, the reason I’m talking about it is that Spreckels Performing Arts Center is currently presenting a delightfully stripped down production of "Carousel," putting the music front and center along with the orchestra, which is right there on stage with musical director Janis Wilson. Billed as a staged concert, it’s more of a fully staged musical with minimal sets, and an orchestra you can actually look at during the show if you want to. But with gorgeous costumes, snappy choreography, and some truly magnificent singers and actors, you'll soon stop noticing the musicians and be pulled into the story. Or not. The truth is, "Carousel" DOES have a kind of a weird, conspicuously dated story, in which the residents of a turn of the century New England mill town deal with everyday problems: love, poverty, death, spousal abuse, class divisions, what to do when you've died with unfinished business, and timeless issue of finding a suitable rhyme to the word ‘vittles.’ The music is lovely, and it weaves in and out of the dialogue like a river along a gentle mountainside. Directed with fondness and a staunch refusal to ‘fix’ any of the stories outdated ideas, this "Carousel" but putting focus on it’s most notable attribute, the music, is as pleasant and laidback as a lazy ride on a merry-go-round - or a summertime clambake amongst friends. "Carousel" runs through March first at Spreckels Performing Arts Center - spreckelsonline.com
