As one of the most important geopolitical relationships in the world, the United States - China relationship has the opportunity to set the course of a number of issues that would ripple across the world. Unfortunately, it seems that misperceptions, misunderstandings, and missed opportunities abound in this vital relationship. In this month's episode, we speak with Sarwar Kashmeri, a leading international relations scholar, academic, business leader, and host of the Polaris Live program, about his recent trip to China and what insights he gathered during his travels. During his two weeks in China, a country he has not visited in over 20 years, he became confident that both sides of this relationship do not understand each other and that the only solution is exchanges, travel, and everyday interactions which can lead to a better path forward. He outlines the worldview that many in China hold and what their government seems to want from engagement with the world. This certainly is not a relationship free of critical challenges, but we can all do our part to solve them by accurately understanding what each side wants from the other.Sarwar Kashmeri is an international relations specialist, author, and commentator, noted for his expertise on U.S. global strategy and national security. He speaks frequently before business, foreign policy and military audiences. He is the founder and host of Polaris-Live. com, “United States and China in the world,” a live internet video program featuring 30 minute conversations on the business and geopolitical impact of China's rapid rise to superpower status.Kashmeri is author of the Foreign Policy Association's report “The Telegram: A China Agenda For President Biden“ (2021); “The Telegram II: The Business of America and China is Business“(2022); “China's Grand Strategy: Weaving a New Silk Road to Global Primacy,” (Bloomsbury), his third book, was published in July 2019. It is a centennial book of the Foreign Policy Association where Sarwar is a Senior Fellow. The book was released at a Washington D.C. launch featuring Kashmeri and former U.S. Defense Secretary, Chuck Hagel. He is also an Applied Research Fellow of the Peace and War Center of Norwich University, Vermont, USA  and served a four year term as a non-residential Senior Fellow at the Brent Scowcroft Center for International Security of the Atlantic Council in Washington D.C.Kashmeri has hosted “China Focus,” a podcast series for the Carnegie Corporation of New York and discussed China's Belt and Road Initiative on television with Deutsche Welle, the German news network, and in a series of interviews with Xinhua, China's global news agency.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was awarded the title of honorary professor by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences on Tuesday in Beijing, in recognition of his contributions to promoting agricultural science and technology cooperation between China and Pakistan. Speaking at the ceremony, Sharif said that agriculture remained a key topic of discussion during his meetings with Chinese leaders. He said that Pakistan hopes to learn from China's development experience and expand cooperation in areas such as crop breeding, animal husbandry, climate-smart agriculture, agricultural machinery and agricultural product processing, in order to improve productivity and added value. Sharif announced that Pakistan will launch the second phase of its "Thousand Talents Plan", which will see 1,000 more young people from Pakistan sent to Chinese agricultural institutions to study and undertake training. I propose sending 1,000 students and fresh agriculture graduates from all provinces of Pakistan to Chinese universities for formal courses and modern agricultural training," he said. Sharif's four-day official visit to China, which concluded on Tuesday, is an important high-level exchange between the two countries as this month marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. His announcement was warmly welcomed by Pakistani students at the academy, many of whom view China's agricultural modernization as a model for Pakistan's rural development. Nadeem Sarwar, a Pakistani scholar pursuing a PhD in agricultural water resources and environment at CAAS, said that the initiative would create valuable opportunities for more young people in Pakistan. More Pakistani graduates will have the opportunity to gain knowledge, experience and exposure at Chinese institutions. When they return to Pakistan, they can contribute to developing the agricultural sector there," he said. Sarwar's research focuses on improving the efficiency of agricultural water use, an issue he said is particularly important for Pakistan. China has made great progress (in agriculture), especially in improving water-use efficiency," he said, adding that he hopes to use China's technologies and experience to boost Pakistan's agricultural productivity and improve its management of resources. Muhammad Shahzad, also a PhD scholar at CAAS, who is studying animal genetics, breeding and reproduction, described the occasion as "a really big day" for Pakistani students. "It is a matter of great pride for all Pakistanis that China truly acknowledges Pakistan and values our friendship." Shahzad noted that Pakistan's livestock industry plays a major role in the country's agricultural economy, and that scientific breeding is essential for improving productivity. "Our animals are resilient to hot weather and diseases, but we need more scientific breeding," he said. Huang Sanwen, president of CAAS and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that CAAS has established multiple joint platforms with Pakistani partners, including laboratories for cotton biotechnology, sustainable crop pest control and molecular breeding of wheat. Huang said that the academy has also promoted cooperation in crop breeding, prevention of animal and plant diseases, water and soil resource management, and agricultural product processing. CAAS has trained more than 300 Pakistani students over the years and established a China-Pakistan Agricultural Technology Working Group with the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, to institutionalize cooperation and strengthen capacity-building efforts, he added. He Zhonghu, a researcher at the academy's Institute of Crop Sciences, who has worked with Pakistani researchers for more than two decades, said that China and Pakistan have already achieved remarkable results through joint agricultural research. A wheat variety developed by Chinese and Pakistani researchers has recently been approved in Pakistan following years of field testing. The variety yields about 10 percent more than local varieties, matures earlier than them and has strong resistance to lodging (stem bending or breakage), said He, who is also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. We are very happy to contribute what we can to Pakistan's agricultural development and food security," he added.“我们很高兴能为巴基斯坦的农业发展和粮食安全尽一份力,”他补充道。The researcher, who has trained 10 Pakistani PhD scholars and a number of agricultural technicians at the institute, said that future training methods should focus more on applying new technologies rather than on basic research. For example, students studying genetics or wheat breeding should also be taken to experimental fields, seed companies and flour mills for hands-on experience, he said. in recognition of /ɪn ˌrekəɡˈnɪʃən əv/以表彰…crop breeding /krɒp ˈbriːdɪŋ/作物育种livestock industry /ˈlaɪvstɒk ˈɪndəstri/畜牧业sustainable crop pest control /səˈsteɪnəbəl krɒp pest kənˈtrəʊl/可持续作物病虫害防治molecular breeding /məˈlekjʊlə ˈbriːdɪŋ/分子育种lodging /ˈlɒdʒɪŋ/倒伏(农作物)

ANAS Sarwar has urged people to vote Labour in Scotland, even if they don't like Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves. In an exclusive GB News interview Mr Sarwar said he backed the Prime Minister, while admitting "things need to improve". But he said the upcoming Holyrood elections were not about the PM or the Chancellor: they were about the future of Scotland. And Mr Sarwar believes, despite the state of the polls, Labour will go on to win and depose the SNP after nearly two years in power, saying they'd mirror the fight shown by the Scottish football team.He also spoke out to praise the Home Secretary commending the way she is tackling the immigration crisis.Asked about Labour's election chances he told Ms De Piero: “In six months' time, the choice is not going to be about who the UK Labour government is.“The choice is not going to be about who the Prime Minister is. Keir Starmer is not standing to be First Minister. Rachel Reeves is not standing to be First Minister. Nigel Farage is not standing to be First Minister. Me and John Swinney are standing to be First Minister.“And the choice that people have in that election in six months is, do we have a third decade of the SNP in charge with record long NHS waiting lists, our schools falling down the international league tables, billions of pounds of lost and wasted money and the priorities and, for example, the cultural issues that the SNP continue to pursue, or are we going to take a different direction with me as First Minister?“That's the choice, and I'm really confident when that choice is put in front of people in Scotland, they'll vote for that new direction. “So we're kind of like the Scotland team qualifying for the World Cup. The underdog, always talked down but got over the line and made history, qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years. Labour is going to do the same, winning for the first time in 20 years in Scotland.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

There also appears to have been a rethink by the party hierarchy over its 2026 election strategy with a pledge( yup more of these) to "protect" the achievements of "devolution" such as free prescriptions, the baby box, free tuition. As UK Labour apes Reform is Scottish Labour doing the same with the SNP ?Sarwar, at the end of the Mackay car crash piece, reiterated Labour support for the expansion of nuclear energy in Scotland to tackle climate change, provide jobs and ( wait for this one) reduce bills.
