Like all transitions, midlife can be messy and sad and glorious all at once, leaving many midlife women feeling rather alone and somewhat invisible. But what does this transition we are experiencing lead to? I'm Jo Blackwell, a photographer, author and coach for women who want more from their lives post 50 and I'm here to remind you that if we manage our health and embrace it, growing older can lead to one of the greatest periods of growth and transformation of our lives. My aim is to help women step into a starring role in their own lives - whatever that means to you. It's pretty cool that we're living at a time when our culture is least *starting* to recognize that people (especially women) don't cease to have value and worth as soon as they hit middle age. Of course, we still have a HELLUVA long way to go toward eliminating  ageism— but thanks to people like Jen Vertanen, we're making progress. Jen is a real-life example that it IS possible to have a job that you love (even a corporate job like she does!), while also connecting with your passions outside of that. The mid-life crisis is a cliché for a reason, and Jen is here to help us shake up stagnation and figure out what it looks like to live FULLY in the second half of life. (And hey, if it happens to involve a lime green convertible, we certainly aren't gonna stop ya!) If you ever feel like you're stuck in your own personal Groundhog Day hellhole, this episode is for you. In this conversation, Jen & I  share personal stories and practical tips for finding balance and fulfillment— no matter your age.  We also talk about knowing when it's time to walk away from a relationship or marriage, and  how to navigate difficult decisions like this from a grounded place of moving toward what you DO want, rather than running away from what you DON'T want (because, spoiler— everywhere you go, there you are.) Jen shares about why so many women start to feel incredibly stuck in mid-life even if they've “made it” on paper, and how we can break free from the rut and start living on purpose. She also shares her secret sauce of how we can be more intentional about that everyday— and it just might include getting to know your 80-year-old self! About JenJen Vertanen is a Certified Life Coach, Mentor, & writer who helps amazing women answer the question, “What's next?” regardless of the transition they're in whether it's a soon-to-be empty-nester, a recent divorcée, a retiree who wants to move to the mountains of Ecuador, and everything in-between. Using her signature candor and humor, Jen wants the world to know it's never too late and you're never too old but you do kind of need to get going.  Jen lives in MN with her husband, last kiddo at home, and 2 newfs and when she's not working, you can find her reading erotica, planning her next trip, having a conversation with her 80-yo self, or enjoying a glass of dry red or a fancy cocktail made from the tears of little children (jk!). This episode covers:[0:00] Intro[5:30] Can you really have a job and life you love?[7:55] Knowing if and when it's time to walk away from a relationship or marriage[10:55] Why women in midlife feel stuck[14:00] How to get out of this 'groundhog day'[16:10] Tips for creating a relationship with your future self[19:15] Being intentional and aware in order to create real, lasting change in our lives[20:35] Why it's so easy to get in our head and stuck[23:10] How to make complicated relationships better[31:45] Going off on personal development booksResources mentioned in this episode:Abbott ElementaryYou Are More Than You Think You Are: Practical Enlightenment for Everyday Life by Kimberly SnyderHeroine SportConnect with Jen:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/its.jenvertanen/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jennifervertanenTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@its.jenvertanenWebsite: https://jenvertanen.com/Connect with me:Instagram: www.instagram.com/bad.bitch.therapistTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@badbitchtherapistWebsite: https://badbitchtherapist.co/Email: heyboo@badbitchtherapist.coBook a call: https://badbitchtherapist.co/contact DISCLAIMER: None of my online content or coaching services are to be considered as therapy or a substitute for individualized mental health treatment or healthcare. Jen Vertanen is a mentor for ambitious women who may feel bored and unfulfilled even though they've checked all the boxes and done everything “right”. This conversation has a bucketload of gems and the vibrancy of Jen shines through the microphone right into your ears. Listen as Holly and Jen discuss: How sometimes life can appear very, very good on the outside - yet we are crumbling and barely holding it together on the inside. If nothing changes, nothing changes and how we can work to improve, change and grow. When we try to loathe our way to healing, it has to be compassionate, understood and held with love for ourselves and those around us. Becoming our own best friend. The tops down and bottoms up perspective. Starting with a vision of who we want the older version of ourselves to be and working backwards to reverse engineer the changes I make daily to get closer and closer to that vision. This episode is one to remember and even one to listen to again and again. Jen Vertanen is a coach, mentor, speaker, and writer. She also plays the role of Mama Bear when it comes to protecting her family, a trait she developed when she was just eight years old while living in an emotionally abusive household. Because of her own experience, she knows exactly what it's like to not have someone to confide to, and encourages people to share the hard stories so they can heal the places that hurt. She has since built a career that lets people open up about their emotional needs and help them fill the void in their hearts. In today's episode, Jen shares her heartbreaking story and how she eventually found her way out of the dark place was she was in. She talks about what it's like to feel trapped and helpless, and to put a mask on when she's out with people. She also gives inspiring tips and sound advice on how to overcome some of life's most painful moments.   “I refuse to be this vital person on the outside and dead on the inside. It's not fair to anyone, let alone myself.” – Jen Vertanen   On Today's Episode of A Healthy Curiosity: Her story and how she became a nurturing person. What's the Mama Bear archetype? How you can use different archetypes in real life. What's it like to finally address unmet emotional needs? How she managed to improve her social life. What is “hermiting” and how did she "hide" herself during her marriage? How does she check for motivation? What happens when you share the hard stories? Her tip for those who want to bring in the self-mothering energy.   Key Takeaway: Saying yes to positive moments and getting out of your comfort zone will significantly improve your life. It's better to feel anything at all, than feel dead. You can find evidence that you're a good person and evidence that you're a bad person. In this episode, I interview my friend Jen on how childhood emotional trauma has affected her relationships today as an adult. Even if you’ve never been abused or didn’t experience trauma in the way Jen and I discuss on today’s episode, it doesn’t mean that your upbringing didn’t affect you in some way in how you relate to men and relationships. And if it happened 10 years ago, 20 or 30, and you haven’t dealt with it, there’s a chance it’s impacting your relationships today. https://veronicagrant.com/episode90

In this very first episode, very first season of Going There with Jen Vertanen, I'm telling you about all the things I could tell you about my journey like my emotionally abusive childhood and subsequent lifelong traumas, promiscuity, becoming a mom when I didn't want to be a mom, loneliness, depression, and so on and so on. But I don't. I save these stories for later because Going There isn't just about me..it's about all of us. It's about sharing our stories to help heal us all. It's about not feeling alone. It's about tenacity and resiliency and grit and grace. It's about laughter and pain, joy and heartache. It's about feeling the full range of experiences and emotions - playing in the dichotomies and paradoxes.  And it's about so much more... Welcome. Thank you for being on this journey with me.

Mentor, emotional sidekick, and all around awkward gal Jen Vertanen has spent the last gazillion years feeling alone and fairly depressed. It wasn't until she started addressing her own healing (from an emotionally abusive childhood) that she discovered others who said 'Me too' and Jen decided to stop being a miserable cow and help others tell their own stories around healing, silver linings, and finding the joy amidst the pain. In Season 1 of Going There, Jen will be talking with folks who've had the emotional crap kicked out of them and come back swing each and every time because of resilience + grit + tenacity + a healthy dose of wine (ok - maybe just for Jen). There will be so much laughter, tears, and awkward silence as Jen and her guests go there…like really really go there.  The journey is set to begin on September 27th. Are you ready to 'go there'?
