“What if your bloating, fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, stubborn weight gain, and hormone symptoms are actually starting in your gut?” In this episode, Dr. Mariza sits down with Dr. Cassie Smith — dual board-certified endocrinologist, founder of Modern Endocrine, and author of Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones — to unpack the powerful connection between gut health, hormone balance, stress, metabolism, inflammation, and reproductive health. Together, they dive into how chronic stress, poor gut health, blood sugar dysregulation, inflammation, and lifestyle overload silently impact everything from cortisol and insulin to estrogen, progesterone, thyroid function, and fertility. Dr. Cassie explains why so many women are told their labs are “normal” while still feeling exhausted, bloated, anxious, inflamed, and disconnected from their bodies — and why gut dysfunction is often the missing piece conventional medicine overlooks. They also explore the growing metabolic and hormonal crisis happening in younger women, the connection between PCOS, insulin resistance, gut dysfunction, and birth control, and why many women are struggling to restore healthy cycles and fertility later in life. This conversation is a powerful reminder that hormones do not work in isolation. Your gut, nervous system, metabolism, sleep, stress resilience, and hormones are all deeply interconnected. If you've been feeling like your body is trying to tell you something but nobody has connected the dots yet, this episode will help you understand where healing truly begins. DR. CASSIE SMITH Dr. Cassie Smith is a dual board-certified endocrinologist and the founder of Modern Endocrine. After becoming frustrated with the limitations of conventional medicine, she built a practice focused on uncovering the root causes behind hormone dysfunction, metabolic issues, fertility struggles, and gut-related symptoms. She is also the author of the book Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones. IN THIS EPISODE Why chronic stress has such a powerful impact on gut health and hormones How gut dysfunction contributes to fatigue, brain fog, bloating, anxiety, and weight resistance The connection between estrogen decline, microbiome diversity, and inflammation Why insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction are rising in younger women The hidden relationship between PCOS, gut health, cortisol, and fertility Why birth control is often used as a Band-Aid instead of addressing root causes The foundational lifestyle habits that support gut and hormone healing Why slowing down, resting, and reducing nervous system overload matters for recovery QUOTES “Your hormones are doing the best they can in the environment you give them.” “It doesn't matter how many supplements or hormones we throw at you if the foundations aren't in place.” “Your gut is where all healing begins.” “Your body cannot heal in survival mode.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Get your “Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones” Book by Dr. Cassie Smith https://guthormonefix.com/ Order my newest book: The Perimenopause Revolution https://peri-revolution.com/ Modern Endocrine Website Modern Endocrine Instagram Modern Endocrine Facebook Modern Endocrine Tiktok Modern Endocrine Youtube Hormones, Metabolism and You PodcastThe Menopause Gut Book by Cynthia Thurlow RELATED EPISODES  741: Estrogen, Gut Health, Mitochondria, and Cardiovascular Health: What Changes In Perimenopause with Dr. Siobhan Mitchel 743: Why Your Heart Risk Changes in Menopause (And What You Can Do About It) with Dr. Jayne Morgan 738: The Hidden Link Between Inflammation, Hormones & Fertility with Dr. Natalie Crawford  740: Why You're Bloated, Gaining Weight & Feeling Off in Menopause (It Starts in Your Gut) with Cynthia Thurlow

You're caught between two terrors: gaining weight and staying exactly where you are forever. You've spent years in a disordered mind with disordered thoughts creating disordered behaviors. You'll do anything to break free, but you're trying to HAVE recovery while still BEING the trapped version of yourself. Today we're flipping the script with the Be-Do-Have formula that makes recovery inevitable. In this transformational episode, you'll discover: Why most people have recovery backwards (and why it keeps them stuck) The science-backed Be-Do-Have formula that doubles success rates How to BE recovered before you feel recovered The identity shift that changes everything automatically Why staying where you are is actually scarier than changing How to stop starving for your old life and start living as your new self For the woman ready to stop settling for survival and start choosing to thrive. THE BACKWARDS APPROACH THAT KEEPS YOU STUCK Most people think: "When I HAVE food freedom, then I'll DO recovery behaviors, then I'll BE recovered." Research from Stephen Covey and modern neuroscience proves this backwards. The truth: You must BE the person you want to become, DO what she does, then you'll HAVE what you want. Dr. James Clear's identity research shows: People who say "I am someone who nourishes my body" have 40% higher success rates than those who say "I want to eat better." THE BE-DO-HAVE FORMULA IN RECOVERY BE: The woman who trusts her body completely DO: Eat without negotiation, rest without guilt, take up space HAVE: Food freedom, body peace, mental clarity BE: The woman who values nourishment over control DO: Choose pasta at dinner, have birthday cake, skip gym when tired HAVE: Energy, joy, presence in your own life The scary part: You start BEING her before you feel ready, before you see results, before it feels natural. THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE FORMULA

I avoided talking about weight management for 10 years. I'm finally talking about it. Not because I had a dramatic transformation story to tell, I didn't lose 50 pounds, and I'm not selling anything. But because I'm a 48-year-old woman in perimenopause who has been intentional about weight maintenance for the past four years, and I've learned a few things worth sharing. In this video, I walk you through the 20 habits I actually use to stay at a healthy weight without dieting. They are about food, movement, and mindfulness.  Some of them are obvious. Some are tactical. One of them connects to spirituality, and it might be the most important one on the list. What I cover:

For years, I avoided weighing myself.  I thought it would make me obsess more. So I didn't do it.  But here's the irony: I was obsessing constantly anyway.  Every time my clothes felt tight, every time someone I hadn't seen in a while asked if I was still running, my brain would spiral. Do they think I've gained weight? Have I? Then I read my friend Darya Rose's book Foodist, where she recommends experimenting with weighing yourself every single day — without shame or pride — as a way to actually stop the obsession.  I decided to give it a go. It changed everything. Not only did I know exactly where I stood (no more guessing), but I also discovered that after a big eating day, the damage was almost always much smaller than my brain had convinced me it was.  And the most beautiful unexpected bonus?  Doing this daily helped me separate my self-worth from the number on the scale. I no longer see myself as a better person when the number is lower, or a worse person when it's higher.

That's the zone we want to live in, and we want to lower that inflammatory burden on the day-to-day, not to be all or nothing, but to really cultivate that body resilience so we can handle the challenges of life that we know are coming.” “It's your body's data. We are built for this…But the problem is, for most of us, this isn't happening once in a while. It's happening all the time, and over time research shows that it can lead to higher insulin levels, increased fat storage, especially in the abdomen, and more inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.” “Your metabolism is deeply connected to your nervous system. So what can you do about this? I want to keep this real simple because this isn't about doing more, it's about doing fewer things consistently.” “If we can start to create more safety in our bodies, it just changes everything. Legendary Canadian racer Svein Tuft joins Mike Levy to chat about stories from his book, We Will Never Be Here Again. The two cover wild stories ranging from epic bike-packing trips while pulling Tuft's 60-lb dog named Bear in a homemade trailer, to winning stages at the Tour de France and Giro. Tuft has had an unconventional career and lived an unconventional life. Tuft is likely also the only professional cyclist, active or retired, who has spent time train hopping. He gives Levy his best tips for traveling via railcar—like finding priority trains to cross the country quickly and hiding in the nooks of grain carts to avoid the authorities. The two also dive into how being an introvert was a superpower for Tuft during his European road career before getting into a discussion of ultra-endurance racing. Tuft has advice for racing the Tour Divide, including getting heavier, and talks about how a severe sickness forced him to pull the pin once he reached Colorado during his own attempt. Finally, the duo discusses Tuft's unexplainable sighting while camping deep in the Canadian forest. Was it a UFO or something else? Whether it was an otherworldly encounter or just extreme exhaustion, it adds another incredible layer to Tuft's backlog of outdoor stories. Listen to the full episode, grab his book, We Will Never Be Here Again, for the rest of the wild stories, and check out Tuft Camps if you're brave enough to try holding his wheel. Hormones control almost every system in your body. They are like an orchestra playing, so when one instrument is a little off-key, it affects the whole system. If you feel tired, anxious, or are gaining weight, your hormones may be involved. In this episode, leading reproductive expert Dr Helen O'Neill explains how hormone health affects fertility, metabolism, and mental health for both men and women.  The core question is simple: if hormones run your body, how much influence do you have over them?  Alongside ZOE's head nutritionist, Dr Federica Amati, Helen explores the links between hormones and fatigue, anxiety, weight gain, fertility, and metabolic health. The episode covers thyroid health, chronic pain, sperm health, and why gut hormones play a central role in appetite and weight regulation. We also examine why some female-specific conditions remain misunderstood or undiagnosed, and how better data may help change that. Most importantly, this episode focuses on what you can do to take back control. With emerging science suggesting that diet plays a key role in hormone regulation, you'll hear how fibre, plant diversity, healthy fats, and key micronutrients support gut hormone production and fertility. You'll also learn why changes made over three months may meaningfully influence fertility, and why conception is always a shared responsibility. Help keep your hormones in tune with this guide to the relationship between gut, diet and hormones, produced in partnership with the hormone experts at Hertility.

If you've ever felt like you gained 1–2kg overnight despite eating well and training consistently, this episode is for you. In today's episode, I'm breaking down the real reasons behind water weight fluctuations – and why rapid changes on the scale are almost never body fat. I share my own recent experience with frustrating weight fluctuations (including one I'm currently navigating), and explain what's actually happening physiologically when your weight suddenly shifts.   I cover: ✅ How stress and cortisol cause fluid retention ✅ The sleep–cortisol cycle – and why poor sleep makes fluctuations worse ✅ The signs your cortisol may be out of balance ✅ The hidden, everyday stressors that keep your nervous system switched on ✅ Why water retention peaks before your period ✅ How low progesterone can amplify PMS and pre-period bloating ✅ The impact of carbs, salt and strength training on the scale ✅ This episode is your reminder that your body is responsive – not broken. Understanding what drives these fluctuations is incredibly freeing. It allows you to stop panicking, stop over-correcting, and instead take the right steps to stabilise things while continuing to move forward with your weight loss goals. If you're ready to properly understand your body and stop fearing normal fluctuations, this is a must-listen

Have you ever followed a meal plan, lost weight… and then gained it back again? So many Christian women aren't asking how to plan — they're asking: “What happens when I mess it up again?” Because most of us have followed a weight loss plan, struggled with emotional eating, regained the weight, and then judged ourselves or disconnected from our eating habits altogether. In this Christian weight loss podcast episode, we talk about why overeating often leads to shame, disconnection, and starting over — and how Scripture offers a different response. Through the lens of Leviticus, we explore how God created pathways for His people to return to closeness with Him after failure — and what that means for your meal planning protocol today. Hormone replacement therapy education is all the talk these days. But how do you cut through all the noise and get the right care for you?  Expert in the field, Dr. Sarah Daccarett joins the podcast to get straight to the point about how the CORRECT hormone replacement methods can do more than just symptom management. We want you to feel GOOD in midlife, not just symptom-free. A lot of providers aren't knowledgeable or confident enough in HRT options, leaving you with a one-size-fits-all treatment plan. And sadly, this causes thousands of women to be totally underdosed.  But Dr. Sarah offers something different that can potentially give some standardization for you. You can get predictable products and services at her company, Inner Balance. With a clinical team to check in with, and less HRT side effects than other formulations, Inner Balance is a safe and massively effective option for managing your midlife hormone symptoms.  Tune in here and learn how to get maximum benefit from hormone replacement therapy to live your brightest life! Dr. Sarah Daccarett, MD  After treating thousands of women who felt ignored with their symptoms or who were totally misdiagnosed, Dr. Sarah realized the healthcare system wasn't built for women, so she built something new. She's the CEO and founder of Inner Balance- a medical approach to female biology that works with women's bodies. It's your science-backed and compassionate solution to hormonal health, with the mission to close the gender gap in healthcare for good.  IN THIS EPISODE Why midlife women don't get the hormone help they deserve The massive gap in knowledge around hormone replacement  The difference between hormone treatment for men and women  The importance of paying attention to your hormone dosing Understanding lab markers for hormone levels  The neuroprotective benefits of hormone replacement  Why so many women are underdosed with hormones  About Dr. Sarah Daccarett's company, Inner Balance  QUOTES “It's because women need to understand that this convoluted messaging they're getting is suppressing them. It's keeping them misinformed and it's keeping them from living probably their fullest potential.” “A take home message for anybody listening is that it's not just the hormones that matter. It's the way you're trying to get them into the body. Unfortunately, we're all having to turn into hormone experts because doctors are not figuring it out for us, so we're doing it ourselves.” “Women, if you want to treat estrogen dominance, you should make sure that your estrogen is actually [high] enough that all these chemicals can't bind. Then you have enough progesterone to counterbalance it. So the treatment is not to lower estrogen, but to actually take it and then you'll feel better.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Order my new book: The Perimenopause Revolution  https://peri-revolution.com/ Use code ENERGIZED and get 20% off on your Timeline order http://timeline.com/ENERGIZED Inner Balance Website: InnerBalance.com Inner Balance on Instagram Dr. Sarah on Instagram RELATED EPISODES  #605: Breaking the HRT Confusion: The Truth Behind Hormone Replacement Therapy for Perimenopausal Women with Karen Martel 579: Hormone Replacement Options and Hormone Testing for Women in Midlife + Self Advocacy for Optimal Health with Esther Blum #647: Hormone Optimization Therapy (HOT) Isn't Your Mom's HRT + It's One Of The Best Strategies For Longevity with Dr. Amy Killen 680: You Are Not Broken: Why Women Need Testosterone to Feel Strong, Sexy & Energized with Dr. Kelly Casperson
