Hello Interactors,Spring at Interplace brings a shift to mapping, GIS, and urban design. While talk of industrial revival stirs nostalgia — steel mills, union jobs, bustling Main Streets — the reality on the ground is different: warehouses, data centers, vertical suburbs, and last-mile depots. Less Rosy the Riveter, more Ada Lovelace. Our cities are being shaped accordingly — optimized not for community, but for logistics.FROM STOREFRONTS TO STEEL DOORSLet's start with these two charts recently shared by the historian of global finance and power Adam Tooze at Chartbook. One shows Amazon passing Walmart in quarterly sales for the first time. The other shows a steadily declining drop in plans for small business capital expenditure. Confidence shot up upon the election of Trump, but dropped suddenly when tariff talks trumped tax tempering. Together, these charts paint a picture: control over how people buy, build, and shape space is shifting — fast. It all starts quietly. A parking lot gets fenced off. Trucks show up. Maybe the old strip mall disappears overnight. A few months later, there's a low, gray building with no windows. No grand opening. Just a stream of delivery vans pulling in and out. This isn't just a new kind of facility — it's a new kind of urban and suburban logic.Platform logistics has rewritten the rules of space. Where cities were once shaped by factories and storefronts, now they're shaped by fulfillment timelines, routing algorithms, and the need to move goods faster than planning commissions can meet.In the past, small businesses were physical anchors. They invested in place. They influenced how neighborhoods looked, felt, and functioned. But when capital expenditures from local firms drop — as that second chart shows — their power to shape the block goes with it.What fills the vacuum is logistics. And it doesn't negotiate like the actors it replaces. This isn't just a retail story. It's a story about agency — who gets to decide what a place is for. When small businesses cut back on investment, it's not just the storefront that disappears. So does the capacity to influence a block, a street, a community. Local business owners don't just sell goods — they co-create neighborhoods. They choose where to open, how to hire, how to design, and what kind of social space their business offers. All of that is a form of micro-planning — planning from below. France, as one example, subsidizes these co-created neighborhoods in Paris to insure they uphold the romantic image of a Parisian boulevard. But without subsidies, these actors are disappearing. And in the vacuum, big brands and logistics move in. Not softly, either. Amazon alone added hundreds of logistics facilities to U.S. land in the past five years. Data centers compete for this land. Meta recently announced a four million square foot facility in Richland Parish, Louisiana. It will be their largest data center in the world. These buildings are a new kind of mall. They're massive, quiet, windowless buildings that optimize for speed, not presence. This is what researchers call logistics urbanization — a land use logic where space is valued not for what people can do in it, but for how efficiently packages and data can pass through it.The shift is structural. It remakes how land is zoned, how roads are used, and how people move — and it does so at a scale that outpaces most municipal planning timelines. That's not just a market change. It's a change in governance. Because planners? Mayors? Even state reps? They're not steering anymore. They're reacting.City managers once had tools to shape growth — zoning, permitting, community input. But logistics and tech giants don't negotiate like developers. They come with pre-designed footprints and expectations. If a city doesn't offer fast approval, industrial zoning, and tax breaks, they'll skip to the next one. And often, they won't even say why. Economists studying these state and local business tax incentives say these serve as the “primary place-based policy in the United States.”It forces a kind of economic speed dating. I see it in my own area as local governments vie for the attention (and revenue) of would-be high-tech suitors. But it can be quiet, as one report suggests: “This first stage of logistical urbanization goes largely unnoticed insofar as the construction of a warehouse in an existing industrial zone rarely raises significant political issues.”(2)This isn't just in major cities. Across the U.S., cities are bending their long-term plans to chase short-term fulfillment deals. Even rural local governments routinely waive design standards and sidestep public input to accommodate warehouse and tech siting — because saying no can feel like missing out on tax revenue, jobs, or political wins.(2)What was once a dynamic choreography of land use and local voices becomes something flatter: a data pipeline. It isn't all bad. Fulfillment hubs closer to homes mean fewer trucks, shorter trips, and lower emissions. Data centers crunching billions of bits is better than a PC whirring under the desk of every home. There is a scale and sustainability case to be made. But logistic liquidity doesn't equal optimistic livability. It doesn't account for what's lost when civic agency fades, or when a city works better for packages than for people. You can optimize flow — and still degrade life. That's what those two charts at the beginning really show. Not just an economic shift, but a spatial one. From many small decisions to a few massive ones. From storefronts and civic input to corporate site selection and zoning flips. From a lived city to a delivered one.Which brings us to the next shape in this story — not the warehouse, but the mid-rise. Not the loading dock, but the key-fob lobby. Different function. Same logic.HIGH-RISE, LOW TOUCHYou've seen them. The sleek new apartment buildings with names like The Foundry or Parc25. A yoga room, a roof deck, and an app for letting in your dog walker. “Mixed-use,” they say — but it's mostly private use stacked vertically. It's much needed housing, for sure. But these aren't neighborhoods. They're private bunkers with balconies.Yes, they're more dense than suburban cul-de-sacs. Yes, they're more energy-efficient than sprawl. But for all their square footage and amenity spaces, they often feel more like vertical suburbs — inward-facing, highly managed, and oddly disconnected from the street. The ground floors are usually glazed over with placeholder retail: maybe a Starbucks, a Subway, or nothing at all…often vacant with only For Lease signs. Residents rarely linger. Packages arrive faster than neighbors can introduce themselves. There's a gym to bench press, but no public bench or egress. You're close to hundreds of people — and yet rarely bump into anyone you didn't schedule. That's not a design flaw. That's the point. These buildings are part of a new typology — one that synchronizes perfectly with a platform lifestyle. Residents work remote. Order in. Socialize through screens. The architecture doesn't foster interaction because interaction isn't the product. Efficiency is.Call it fulfillment housing — apartments designed to plug into an economy that favors logistics and metrics, not civic social fabrics. They're located near tech centers, distribution hubs, and delivery corridors, and sometimes libraries or parks outdoors. What matters is access to bandwidth and smooth entry for Amazon and Door Dash. And it's not just what you see on the block. Behind the scenes, cities are quietly reengineering themselves to connect these structures to the digital twins — warehouses and data centers. Tucked into nearby low-tax exurbs or industrial zones, together they help reshape land use, strain energy grids, and anchor the platform economy. They're infrastructure for a new kind of urban life — one where presence is optional and connection to the cloud is more important than to the crowd.Even the public spaces inside these buildings — co-working lounges, shared kitchens, “community rooms” — are behind fobs, passwords, and management policies. Sociologists have called this the anticommons: everything looks shared, but very little actually is. It's curated collectivity, not true community. And it's not just isolation — it's predictability. These developments are built to minimize risk, noise, conflict, friction. Which is also to say: they're built to minimize surprise. The kind of surprise that once made cities exciting. The kind that made them social. Some urban scholars describe these spaces as part of a broader “ghost urbanism” — a city where density exists without depth. Where interaction is optional. Where proximity is engineered, but intimacy is not. You can be surrounded by life and still feel like you're buffering. The irony is these buildings often check every sustainability box. They're LEED-certified. Near transit. Built up, not out. From a local emissions standpoint, they beat the ‘burbs'. But their occupant's consumption, waste, and travel habits can create more pollution than homebody suburbanites. And from a civic standpoint — the standpoint of belonging, encounter, spontaneity — they're often just as empty. And so we arrive at a strange truth: a city can be efficient, dense, even walkable — and still feel ghosted. Because what we've optimized for isn't connection. It's delivery — to screens and doorsteps. What gets delivered to fulfillment housing may be frictionless, but it's rarely fulfilling.DRONES, DOMICILES, AND DISCONNECTIONI admit there's a nostalgia for old-world neighborhoods as strong as nostalgia for industrial cities of the past. Neighborhoods where you may run into people at the mailbox. Asking someone in the post office line where they got their haircut. Sitting on the porch, just waitin' on a friend. We used to talk about killing time, now we have apps to optimize it.It's not just because of screens. It's also about what kinds of space we've built — and what kind of social activity they allow or even encourage. In many suburbs and edge cities, the mix of logistics zones, tech centers, and residential enclaves creates what urban theorists might call a fragmented spatial syntax. That means the city no longer “reads” as a continuous experience. Streets don't tell stories. There's no rhythm from house to corner store to café to school. Instead, you get jump cuts — a warehouse here, a cul-de-sac there, a fenced-in apartment complex down the road. These are spaces that serve different logics, designed for speed, security, or seclusion — but rarely for relation. The grammar of the neighborhood breaks down. You don't stroll. You shuttle. You drive past a warehouse. You park in a garage. You enter through a lobby. You take an elevator to your door. There's no in-between space — no casual friction, no civic ambiguity, no shared air. These patterns aren't new. But they're becoming the norm, not the exception. You can end up living in a place but never quite arrive.Watch most anyone under 35. Connection increasingly happens online. Friendships form in Discord servers, not diners. Parties are planned via private stories, not porch swings. You don't run into people. You ping them.Sometimes that online connection does spill back into the real world — meetups, pop-ups, shared hobbies that break into public space. Discord, especially, has become a kind of digital third place, often leading to real-world hangouts. It's social. Even communal. But it's different. Fleeting. Ephemeral. Less rooted in place, more tied to platform and notifications.None of this is inherently bad. But it does change the role of the neighborhood as we once knew it. It's no longer the setting for shared experience — it's just a backdrop for bandwidth. That shift is subtle, but it adds up. Without physical places for civic life, interactions gets offloaded to platforms. Connection becomes mediated, surveilled, and datafied. You don't meet your neighbors. You follow them. You comment on their dog through a Ring alert. This is what some sociologists call networked individualism — where people aren't embedded in shared place-based systems, but orbit through overlapping digital networks. And when digital is the default, the city becomes a logistics problem. Something to move through efficiently…or not. It certainly is not something we're building together. It's imposed upon us.And so we arrive at a kind of paradox:We're more connected than ever. But we're less entangled. We're more visible. But we're less involved. We're living closer. But we don't feel near. The irony is the very platforms that hollow out public space are now where we go looking for belonging. TikTok isn't just where we go to kill time — it's where we go to feel seen. If your neighborhood doesn't give you identity, the algorithm will.Meanwhile, the built environment absorbs the logic of logistics. Warehouses and data centers at the edge. Mid-rises in the core. Streets engineered for the throughput of cars and delivery vans. Housing designed for containment. And social life increasingly routed elsewhere. It all works. Until you want to feel something. We're social creatures, biologically wired for connection. Neuroscience shows that in-person social interactions regulate stress, build emotional resilience, and literally shape how our brains grow and adapt. It's not just emotional. It's neurochemical. Oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin — the chemistry of belonging — fire most powerfully through touch, eye contact, shared space. When those rituals shrink, so does our sense of meaning and safety. And that's what this is really about. Historically cities weren't just containers for life. They're catalysts for feeling. Without shared air, shared time, and shared friction, we lose more than convenience. We lose the chance to feel something real — to be part of a place, not just a node in a network. What started with two charts ends here: a world where local agency, social spontaneity, and even emotion itself are being restructured by platform logic. The city still stands. The buildings are there. The people are home. But the feeling of place — the buzz, the bump, the belonging — gets harder to find. That's the cost of efficiency without empathy. Of optimizing everything but meaning. And that's the city we're building. Unless we build something else. We'll need agency. And not just for planners or developers. For people. That's the work ahead. Not to reject the platform city. But to remake it — into something more livable. More legible. More ours. This is a public episode. As the Trump administration pursues a dramatic economic realignment, we're joined by Adam Tooze, author of Chartbook on Substack, and Sohrab Ahmari, US Editor of UnHerd and author of Tyranny, Inc., to examine the feasibility and implications of an American industrial revival. We analyze the administration's strategy for reshoring manufacturing, debate whether reversing globalization is possible or desirable, and consider what economic nationalism would accomplish for a workforce that has largely moved beyond factory jobs. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy SPW, an equal-weighted S&P500 index, has stalled since March, and is behind SPX so far this year by more than 10%. We think this is reflecting a changing Growth-Policy narrative vs early 2024. Entering this year, investor expectations were for a Goldilocks outcome – growth acceleration and at the same time quick Fed easing, starting already in March. The early Fed cuts and the consequent improving credit impulse didn't materialize, which should weigh on growth in 2H. US activity momentum is slowing, with CESI outright negative at present, putting EPS growth projections of as much as 15% acceleration between Q1 and Q4 of this year at risk. Instead of easing preemptively for market-friendly reasons, such as falling inflation, as was the view at the start of the year, the Fed could end up easing, but reactively, in a response to weakening growth. At the same time, there is no safety net any more, the market is positioned long, Vix is at lows, potentially underpricing risks and credit spreads are extremely tight – this is as good as it gets. Adding to the picture strengthening USD and elevated political uncertainty currently, we arrive at a problematic setup for the equity market during summer. In terms of positioning, we have entered this year again OW Growth vs Value style and Large vs Small caps, and we are keeping these for 2H in the US, not expecting much broadening. The recent relative dip due to French political uncertainty is likely to become a buying opportunity as we move through 2H, but we think the risk of further drawdowns is not finished, as the potential new French government will likely try to test the limits of what they can do. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy Last couple of months are showing softening US growth momentum, but at the same time an increasing potential for higher for longer Fed. We see the market upside capped during summer due to the inconsistency between consensus call for disinflation on one hand, and the belief in no landing and in earnings acceleration on the other. Within the market there was a more Defensive rotation underway in Q2, compared to Q1. We think this will continue on likely peaking in bond yields and more attractive valuations. At sector level, we hold a barbell of Defensives and Commodities, and are in particular cautious on Consumer Cyclicals such as Autos and Travel & Leisure. Stylewise, our OW on Growth vs Value continued working – we are not changing it for now, but Small caps could trade better in 2H. They have again lagged ytd, in all key regions, are cheap, and typically perform better when policy cuts start in Europe. In addition, European activity already had a reset last year, and is likely to be better this year. For the US, the rotation might work also, but we do not see it as clear cut, as Fed could stay higher for longer, and US domestic growth could actually weaken meaningfully in 2H. We reverse our long-term preference for FTSE100 vs FTSE250. This podcast was recorded on 02 June 2024. This communication is provided for information purposes only. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy We are concerned about inflation staying too high if there is no slack created in the economy, adverse bonds demand-supply with negative term premia, consensus expectation of profit acceleration of almost 20% between Q1 and Q4 of this year, which doesn't typically happen, especially if the economy softens in 2H, consumer tailwinds potentially turning, as well as concentration and leadership reversal hurting the market. At the core, the Goldilocks view that market embraced in Q1 of inflation/rates moving lower but at the same time of earnings acceleration and economy having no landing remains an inconsistent one. In fact, the Growth-Inflation tradeoff could end up the opposite, as seen in recent ISM showing a spike in pricing and slowing orders. Together with seasonally poor time for markets coming up and still stretched positioning, we look for more of a consolidation in equity markets over the next months. Within this, we advocate for some of the rotations to come up/have legs. Growth is ahead of Value ytd, small caps are heavily behind again ytd. We fundamentally stay with Growth, Quality and large caps tilts, but the turn could be coming, where small caps tended to perform better as ECB starts to ease. Regionally, we have in Q1 taken profits on US vs Eurozone OW, as well as tactically exited our longstanding China bearish stance. The latest market move to a more Defensive trading should have legs, such as recent outperformance of Utilities and Staples, alongside commodity sectors. This podcast was recorded on 06 May 2024. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy In terms of leadership, US and Japan are ahead of other markets ytd, Growth is outperforming Value and large caps are again beating small, in all key regions. We continue to believe that this style of leadership will broadly stay the case for a while longer, until there is a break, or a reset, in the cycle. For Value, commodities, low Quality, small caps, EM or International stocks to begin leading more sustainably one needs to see a reflationary backdrop, in our view, but we could have the opposite. Within this, we have recently taken profits on US vs Eurozone OW, as the Eurozone risk-reward has improved, in our view. Among other, Eurozone valuations appear very attractive, relative growth momentum could be bottoming out and ECB could start moving ahead of the Fed, which would be very atypical. We also have a tactical buy on China given extreme cheapness and UW positioning by most investors. Broadly, JPM Fixed Income's call is that bond yields are fundamentally set to move lower in 2H, but we note a pickup in inflation swaps, as well as the outright negative term premia for bonds again, which suggests that there is a lot of complacency in the bond market with respect to the inflation risk. Consequently, the gap that has opened up ytd between Fed futures and the equity market is getting wider. Equities rallied almost 30% from last October lows, driven in Nov-Dec by the expectation of a Fed pivot, but these projections have fully reversed back to October low levels. Equities are ignoring the most recent pivot of a pivot, which might be a mistake. The assumption that the market is likely making here is one of growth acceleration coming to the rescue in 2H. In this regard, we note that earnings projections for 2024 are still not moving up. Regionally, Japan is staying our top pick, continuing our 2023 preference. On today's episode of Unjaded, I'm going to walk you through a simple exercise so that you can understand the actual dollar figure your business needs to bring in this year so that you can stop beating yourself up for not doing more OR... kick your own ass if you're doing too little!Small businesses account for 99.9% of business in North America and make up 50% of the economy YET.... only 6 % of entrepreneurs will make 6 figures this year.I have NEVER had a consulting client answer the “How much money do you need to make in your business this year” question, with anything less than 100k. And I'm not saying you shouldn't go for 100k. I'm simply saying that there may be other steps along the way for you AND... that maybe 50k would be a whole lot better than the 16k you made in your business last year.Know what I'm saying? What You'll Learn:An exercise that will actually show you what you need to make in your business this year - 6-figure or not.How this exercise supports your brain into building you up - instead of blocking you.Real life examples of business owners this exercise is working for.You don't go from making zero dollars in your businesses to 100 thousand dollars in your businesses overnight. It's time to normalize that and to stop letting that mean you're a failure who will nevermake it to 6 figures. You will make it.One step at a time - just like everything else in life.Do me a favour, don't get jaded along the way ok?Leaning into your own unique HD is the very best way to build a business that fits yourlife so that you can make the money you're here to make and have the impact you'rehere to have. You Can Find All Active Links Here:Check it out → https://vickiedickson.com/unjaded-links/Links Mentioned in the Episode:Download your Human Design Chart for free → https://vickiedickson.com/free-hd-chartBook a Personal Human Design reading → https://vickiedickson.com/personal-readingLet's Connect!Send Vickie a DM on Instagram with your Human Design questions → https://www.instagram.com/vickie.dickson/Check out Vickie's website and current offerings → http://www.vickiedickson.com
The Endless Pursuit of a 6 Figure BusinessHow did we land on 100k as the magical number that signifies success in business? Today on Unjaded, I'm going to push back on this a bit. Here's why: Over and over and over again I listen to women in consulting sessions that are hell bent on hitting 6 figures. Everything that they do in their business is done to chase this goal.Which is fine…but for the fact that they've yet to crack 5 figures ......for some, they haven't even cracked 5 figures (10k) in a YEAR. Yet they have a goal of hitting 6 figures STAT.So they follow all of these gurus (many who aren't making 6 figures but that's a story for another day) and they try to use the same tactics to grow their own businesses. There are 2 issues I have with this:Often said guru is not using the tactics they're teaching. They sound good on paper, but if you watch their accounts, they're not doing what they're teaching. The things that you need to grow to 6 figures are very different from the things you need to do at 6 figures and beyond. And yes, I've cleared the 6 figure mark and can speak to this.If you want to unpack this with me, keep listening! What You'll Learn:Why you may need to have another goal and another STRATEGY on the way to 6 figures. How to get the backbone in place to build a 6 figure business without breaking your life.Grow your audience like it's your day job.Give your audience the opportunity to purchase from you, early in the game.Show up as the style of leader that you are (Hint: within your Human Design blueprint lies ALL of who you are). What your Human Design profile tells you about being a leader within your own business. How to build a solid lead magnet that matches your offers. The importance of appreciating every dollar along the way.In the next episode, I'm going to take you through an exercise that I love to do withclients so that they can see the actual dollar figure that they need to make in theirbusiness so that they can be free of the conditioning to do what everyone else is telling them they ‘should' do.You Can Find All Active Links Here:Check it out → https://vickiedickson.com/unjaded-links/Links Mentioned in the Episode:Download your Human Design Chart for free → https://vickiedickson.com/free-hd-chartBook a Personal Human Design reading → https://vickiedickson.com/personal-readingLet's Connect!Send Vickie a DM on Instagram with your Human Design questions → https://www.instagram.com/vickie.dickson/Check out Vickie's website and current offerings → http://www.vickiedickson.com
Consistently Create Content Without Burning OutThe other night I delivered a webinar for Bodygraph Chart focused on growing your audience. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA - Head of Global Equity Strategy So far ytd, US and Japan are ahead of other markets, Growth is outperforming Value and large caps are again beating small in all key regions. We continue to believe that this, ultimately unhealthy, high concentration and narrow leadership is set to stay for a while longer. To buy Value and International stocks one needs to see a reflationary backdrop, in our view, but we could have the opposite. In terms of bond yields, we argued last October to go long duration, but also in January to look for a tactical bounce back in bond yields, as Fed easing became overdiscounted in markets. We now think that the counter-rally in yields might be running out of steam, and would advocate to go long duration again. The move back higher in Fed futures might be getting done – they roundtripped back to October levels, and activity momentum could soften from here. The question is, why didn't equities weaken as US 10-year yields backed up 50bp during Jan-Feb? We think that this is because investors assumed that the yield upmove is reflective of economic acceleration, but we note that earnings projections for 2024 are not reacting positively – they keep coming down in most sectors. If the growth acceleration does not come through, this could act as a headwind. Overall, we keep OW Growth vs Value, US vs Europe, and still see Japan as top regional pick – we look for these to continue tracking. This podcast was recorded on 04 March 2024. Invitations, Recognition, and Energetic Guidance for Projectors with Guest Juliana ChristineAre you a Human Design Projector? In this episode we're talking invitations, recognition and energetic guidance for Projectors with my special guest, Juliana Christine. Juliana is first and foremost a student of life, rhythm and magic. She's a psychotherapist, a mystic, a philosopher, a dream worker and a guide. AND...She's a fellow Human Design specialist. We were in Karen Curry Parker's year long coach mastermind together. Juliana helps clients weave their past and future into the present so that they can experience the truth that they truly are powerful co-creators of their reality. And she's a Projector, which I love. I know that as a listener, you want to hear more about Projectors and the Projector experience. We have Juliana here live to talk about that and all of the magic that she weaves into her life. What You'll Learn:The beauty of Projector's being an absolute LIGHT in, and for, this world. How bitterness can be present for Projectors - and how to navigate it.Embracing rest as a Projector, and avoiding burnout too.How learning to recognize what season you are in, and what season your menstrual cycle is in, can deeply support you.The incredible experience that a 3/5 profile in Human Design lives, learns and then teaches back to the world. How to ask for recognition - and how to recognize yourself.Perhaps the most beautiful take-away from this episode is how to recognize yourself as a Projector. And that comes in the form of mirror work. As Juliana unpacks for us: “How can I expect people to recognize me if I'm not recognizing myself? This world, it is a house of mirrors, so everything is a reflection for us to learn from. If I'm looking for that reflection from someone to recognize me for opportunities so that I can shine my light brighter in the world, I need to go and stand in front of the mirror and recognize myself.”Can I get an amen??You Can Find All Active Links Here:Check it out → https://vickiedickson.com/unjaded-links/Links Mentioned in the Episode:Download your Human Design Chart for free → https://vickiedickson.com/free-hd-chartBook a Personal Human Design reading → https://vickiedickson.com/personal-readingLet's Connect!Send Vickie a DM on Instagram with your Human Design questions → https://www.instagram.com/vickie.dickson/Check out Vickie's website and current offerings → http://www.vickiedickson.comConnect with Juliana Christine!Check out Unleash Your Magic here → https://www.julianachristine.com/unleash-your-magicInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/_julianachristine_YouTube:

Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA So far this year, US is ahead of International, Growth is outperforming Value, large caps are again beating small - Russell2000 is outright down on the year 3%, and China continued struggling. We believe that this, ultimately unhealthy, high concentration and narrow leadership is set to continue until something breaks. To buy Value, beta and International stocks, one needs to see a reflationary backdrop, in our view, but we could have the exact opposite. The risk is of a disappointment on both sides of the Goldilocks narrative. Fed cuts might still be overdiscounted, despite the recent hawkish repricing, and the chances are that inflation picks up again, supply side driven, rather than due to stronger activity, freight rates have nearly tripled. We believe our long duration call made in October will have legs in 2024, but have argued at the start of this year that yields will likely consolidate near term, and the USD could be bottoming out. Regionally, we have preferred US to International stocks since May of last year, and don't see that changing yet. We remain cautious on China, keep fading the bounces, and keep OW Japan – it remains our top regional pick. We are OW Growth vs Value, continuing our call from 2023, and reiterate our downgrade of Banks to UW in Q4 of last year, after three years of Banks beating the market. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy As of end October ‘23, the average stock in S&P500 was down on the year, with SPW at -5%. A lot has changed, courtesy of the November-December rally, and equity markets are now showing overbought conditions, with sentiment moving into complacent territory. This can be seen in high RSIs, elevated Bull-Bear, VIX near lows, tight credit spreads, as well as in the current S&P500 P/E at 20x. Importantly, while a year ago risky assets were fully pricing in a recession, and economists unanimously agreed with that, now the picture is quite different, recession probabilities are currently near the lows of the range, and most macro forecasts are hopeful. This might be too optimistic. Our key call was to go long duration, we advised last October to position for the rollover in bond yields, and while we see this call having legs in 2024, there is likely to be some payback given the sharpness of the move over the past 3 months. Yields could be consolidating near term, and have next leg lower only when activity dataflow shows more clear deterioration. Crucially, while market interpreted falling bond yields since Oct as solely a positive development, we do not think that this will sustain through the year. Lower yields could end up signaling weaker EPS delivery ahead, on softening pricing, sequential activity slowdown and profit margin compression. Bottom line, the risky assets have started to fully embrace the macro combination of central banks easing on lower inflation, but at the same time resilient growth and continued record profitability – this might end up contradictory. All this suggests a much less attractive risk-reward than what would at face value lower bond yields/central banks easing and up to now resilient growth suggest. Healthcare, Telcos, Energy and Utilities have started the year on a positive note, and we think this may continue. This podcast was recorded on 08 January 2024. Unpacking the Lessons of 2023Without exception, each year brings its own lessons for us to play with. Only through reflection, do we see the golden thread that has weaved its way through our experiences to push us towards our growth. For me, 2023 has been about boundaries. In this episode I'm going to unpack a bit of how my Human Design and my conditioningled me to believe that I had boundaries when in fact, I had walls that I'd gladly collapsefor anyone who questioned them. What You'll Learn:Where I have been deeply conditioned and how that impacted me in 2023.How my undefined centres contribute to me trying to prove myself. The lesson that kept repeating for me.It showed up in my business life, my personal life, and many of my relationships. How my authority (I'm an emotional authority) processed and made decisions. What were your lessons in 2023? 2/4 Emotional Manifesting Generator (12 Days of Human Design - Day 12 - Vickie)Welcome to Day 11 of the 12 Days of Human Design series. Over the course of 12 days, we're looking at every member of my family so that you can see how Human Design is so much more than a label or a type. We are all, at the time of this recording anyway, Generator types. There are 8 Manifesting Generators and 3 Generators. We are completely different people and you really can't put us all into one category and say “There. That describes you perfectly.” Today it's a bit weird for me because I'm doing my own chart. So it's like I'm standing naked in front of you! EEEEK!What You'll Learn:I am a 2/4 Manifesting Generator. How learning my own Human Design was one of the most FREEING things that I have ever experienced.Although Manifesting Generators CAN initiate, it doesn't mean that we should. Instead, waiting to respond is where the power is for us.Darkness comes to light through me, through my intensity - and how that is the greatest place for conditioning within my own Chart. With a defined Emotional Solar Plexus, I am designed to be emotional and my emotions will come in waves.Gate 34 - the Gate of Power is a theme in my design but I learned to be small - to be invisible - because it's safer that way.How I am a ‘quad right', what that means and how RARE it is - only .05% of the population has this.I have split definition, which means that it can be really helpful to get around other people when processing information or trying to get something done, if you're any kind of split definition. My Human Design Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EFxF_uKEvAxrLxZmhzpMaoFMwDdYIs4n/view?usp=sharing When you're ready to dive deeply into the nuances of you, head on over to the website to book your reading. 1/3 Manifesting Generator - Empath (12 Days of Human Design - Day 11 - Pete)Welcome to Day 11 of the 12 Days of Human Design series. That describes you perfectly.” Pete is my husband, father to Andrea, Emily and Samuel and ‘Pop' to all four grandkids. What You'll Learn:Pete is a 1/3 Manifesting Generator.Being a 1/3 profile, it kind of drives me crazy! Listen in to learn why! What is profile in Human Design?Your profile is how you do what you do.It's the role you play in the movie of your life. It's a BIG DEAL - and people don't pay any attention to it, most of the time. How his Chart is filled with conundrums and how that plays out for him.For example: he has a design of someone who needs to carve his own path - to walk his own road. Yet he cares for his tribe, and he brings energy to the collective.Having Channel 28-38, the Channel of Struggle, is another conundrum as he can be this big teddy bear - and also stubborn and hard as nails when he wants to be.He also has Channel 50-27, the Channel of Preservation, which carries tribal energy. It's nurturing, it's poppa/momma bear energy. In fact, every single person in our family (except Matt) have all or part of this Channel! WHOA. There are 4 pieces to the “defense circuit” - and Pete has 3/4 of them! This means he can easily break down peoples defenses. He easily communicates with EVERYONE that he meets. It's fascinating. With an undefined Emotional Solar Plexus, like Andrea, Easton and Zoe - he is a natural empath. Listen in to hear how this makes our marriage interesting! His Incarnation Cross is the Cross of the Vessel of Love. It is all about loving life itself, appreciating people for who they are and living in the present. He embodies this energy each and every day.Pete's Human Design Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RKHMMl1Fv5_NGIM33aMODbykucVMwf5c/view?usp=sharing When you're ready to dive deeply into the nuances of you, head on over to the website to book your reading. 6/2 Manifesting Generator 34/20 - Defined Will (12 Days of Human Design - Day 9 - Matt)Welcome to Day 9 of the 12 Days of Human Design series. That describes you perfectly.” Matt is Andrea's husband and Easton's father. He is 35 at the time of this recording and that is important to his design. What You'll Learn:Matt is a 6/2 Manifesting Generator. As a Manifesting Generator with the 34-20 Channel, he will be busier than even the busiest of Manifesting Generators. It's how he is designed. He has mostly Integration and Individual circuitry. Which means that he is all about going his own way and living his life on his own terms. With a defined Will (or Ego) Centre, he joins just 1/8th of the population that has this. People with a defined Will are to be certain of themselves. Spoiler alert - I see this mostly true in men, as our society tends to condition women away from this. How having a defined Emotional Solar Plexus becomes his decision making authority - and what that means. He has 2 emotional waves.Channel 12-22 is the energy of not doing anything you don't want to do because your mood sets the tone for the room. His other wave is a tribal wave. It has moments of rage. Now I've not seen this in him much - I think once I saw it - and it's when his tribe is threatened. He has the energies of the background frequency we're in now on the planet on the unconscious side and the frequency that we're stepping into on the conscious side.Matt has A LOT of experiential energy in his design. He's not someone who's going to be told what to do and how to do it. He is absolutely someone who learns through experience. It's the only way. With both the Head and Root undefined, his design is highly pressurized. As a 6th line profile, he will go through 3 stages in life.0-30 is their 3rd line phase. They do all of the things that 3rd line profiles do - they experience life fully. They go fast and break things.30-50 is when they integrate their life lessons. This is the phase he's in now.50+ is when they step into their role model energy. 4/6 Generator - Empath (12 Days of Human Design - Day 8 - Easton)Welcome to Day 8 of the 12 Days of Human Design series. That describes you perfectly.” Easton is my grandson, son of Andrea and Matt and just 13 days old at the time of this recording! What You'll Learn:Easton is a 4/6 Generator. He has an undefined Emotional Solar Plexus, just like his mom, making him an empath. (Such powerful insight to have this early in his life). As a Generator he has a Sacral sound of ‘uh uh' or ‘unh unh'. In order to not condition him away from this, it will be important to ask him yes or no questions. Not multiple choice. Not this or that. Just yes or no.How he has what is referred to as “the design of the thinker” with having a defined Head and defined Ajna. (Fun fact: in our family, only him and Brooks have this).Having the Channel 64-47 is all about understanding what's going to happen on the path, based on what has already happened. He has the “genius to freak” Channel and people with this Channel have a really unique way of thinking. They have this insight that can be hard to grasp, but they just know. It's their genius. There's a conundrum in his Chart. He has a lot of right facing variables (which require variety, flow and less structure) AND he has a defined Head and Ajna (which want structure and framework). It will be interesting to see what style of learning he emerges with, as either would compliment him.Having an undefined Spleen Centre, he may tend towards holding onto things for longer than he should - this could be people, places, or things.People with undefined Spleen Centres also have sensitive immune systems. When I say sensitive, please don't hear weak. Sensitive means that often holistic medicines work really quickly for them because they notice when something is off in their body before it takes hold. How he has one of the most beautiful Channels in Human Design, Channel 2-14 - The Keeper of the Keys (just like his Uncle Sam).Easton's Human Design Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/14fw0PcNHAD3SVH56l55n5I6M6sChVt1B/view?usp=sharing There are a bazillion things I could speak to in each and every chart we're looking at over these 12 days. Human Design is filled with so many layers. It's one of those things that the deeper you go, the deeper you want to go - and I hope I'm not making your head spin with this series! When you're ready to dive deeply into the nuances of you, head on over to the website to book your reading. 3/5 Emotional Manifesting Generator 34/20 (12 Days of Human Design - Day 6 - Sawyer)Welcome to Day 6 of the 12 Days of Human Design series. That describes you perfectly.” Sawyer is my first grandchild and she is magical. I've never met anyone quite like her. I'll try to do her justice here. What You'll Learn:Sawyer is a 3/5 Emotional Manifesting Generator. She has 7 Channels defined - and 6 of them are ‘Individual' or ‘Integration' Channels. This greatly impacts how she is here to go her own way.As a 3/5 profile, she is an experiential learner and a visionary leader. She is primed to learn from her own experience and share those lessons for the betterment of all.70% of who you are goes through your conscious Sun. Sawyer's is in Gate 51, the Gate of Shock and Initiation. She has Channel 34/20 which is about carving a path for herself, Channel 34/10 which is about following her own convictions and Channel 57/20 which is about being acutely in tune with her truth. WHOA.How the world likes to condition little girls to ‘be nice' and ‘be gentle' - but having Gate 39, the Gate of Provocation, and Gate 51, the Gate of Shock and Initiation will have her pushing back against this conditioning. How much of her Human Design requires her to be in ACTION and embracing movement. She is not a ‘sitting' kind of child. Her defined Spleen will speak quickly in the moment and never again, her defined Sacral will respond in the moment to yes/no questions and her defined Emotional Solar Plexus will never experience clarity in the now.Of the 9 Gates of the Root Centre, she has 7 defined. She's a force with the energy for sensitivity, passion, joy, ambition, innovation, getting things started, and stillness.Sawyer's Human Design Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1u07CmGMuPBDV4ZCgf_sAkeQvK-CBREBG/view?usp=sharing I hope you're seeing as we go through this series how nuanced your Human Design is.It's not about labeling yourself by type so that you behave, or have an excuse to behave, in a certain way. That describes you perfectly.” Something interesting about Nick is that he is a twin and his brother has the exact same Chart as him - but they live and express their lives very differently! What You'll Learn:Nick is a 4/6 Manifesting Generator. He checks some of the ‘typical' boxes when you think of a Manifesting Generator - he has loads of energy, he needs lots of physical activity and he is always busy doing a hundred different things. As a Manifesting Generator with the 34-20 Channel, he will be busier than even the busiest of Manifesting Generators. It's how he is designed.Something that can happen to Manifesting Generators, especially those with this Channel, is that they get labeled in school as someone who can't learn like ‘the others'. Which is crazy because Nick has a mind like a steel trap - but he needs to be in action and moving, which isn't how the school system is set up.In fact, much of his Human Design is about a need for physical activity. He has Channel 32/54 defined from his Root to his Spleen Centre. This is the Channel of Endurance and Ambition. It gives him drive - and a deep fear of failure.Gate 54 is a ‘Theme' in his Human Design because it appears FOUR times in his Chart. This Gate is the Gat of Ambition and Drive and it will drive him to create prosperity at all costs. He turned 30 this year which means he has just come through his first Saturn return. (The planet Saturn returns to the place it was in at birth at around 29, 58, and 84 years of age.) Saturn is the great challenger. It's the barbed wire of your life - the thing you'll keep bumping up against. So it comes around for you with a challenge - and if you don't get it at 29, it'll come back harder at 58 so get it early ok?Nick's Human Design Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oMr547LhkYXJmwh9cTjlwC4Tzrc6jeH3/view?usp=sharing When you're ready to dive deeply into the nuances of you, head on over to the website to book your reading. 2/4 Emotional Generator - Undefined Throat (12 Days of Human Design - Day 3 - Emily)Welcome to Day 3 of the 12 Days of Human Design series. That describes you perfectly.” It is widely accepted that Generators had loads of energy and are busy ALL OF THE TIME. My daughter Emily is a Generator and will put a twist on that way of thinking for you! What You'll Learn:Emily is a 2/4 Emotional Generator with an undefined Throat Centre. She puts a spin on what the world typically thinks of Generator types. There are only 3 Centres defined in her entire Chart and they are all ‘motors' - the Root, Sacral, and Emotional Solar Plexus.Gate 46 is the Gate of Serendipity - and she actually named her yoga studio this! It's all succeeding where others fail ANDit's also a love of the body. Oftentimes bodyworkers will have this Gate defined and Em is no exception as a yoga teacher. Gate 7 is the Gate of Leadership but it's sneaky. It's a leader who doesn't even really know they're leading. People just follow them. Emily's format energy is the Channel of Concentration. It's focused stillness. How being a 2nd line profile (she's a 2/4) shows up for her as the Hermit and as someone who has a natural genius, that 2nd lines never actually SEE in themselves - but everyone else does and they call it out!Emily's Human Design Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BMOGtEgAhSBtFLeEDK9nQKiTQ9DYIFur/view?usp=sharing When you're ready to dive deeply into the nuances of you, head on over to the website to book your reading. Welcome to Day 2 of the 12 Days of Human Design series. That describes you perfectly.” Listen in to see the nuances in Zoe's chart. She is my son Samuel's fiance and just turned 24.What You'll Learn:Zoe is a 5/1 Sacral Generator. How having an undefined Emotional Solar Plexus makes her an empath, and how that is a big difference between her and Samuel. How Gate 19, the Gate of the Sensitive Soul, is a theme in her life (a ‘theme' because this Gate appears multiple times in her chart) and how this may show up for her.How her second theme is Gate 13, the Gate of the Listener. People will naturally gravitate towards Zoe and easily confide in her. Combine this with being an empath and we have someone who cares, and listens, deeply. With a Human Design profile of 5/1 she is a heretic, aka. the karmic mirror, and an investigator. As a nurse, how her Human Design compliments this career choice and allows her to shine.Zoe's Human Design Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-ssduWW_HnVg-QCgPN1FH8PUS2JuVlFZ/view?usp=sharing What I really hope you're seeing in these little snapshots of my family is the nuances. I hope that you can appreciate how it's never about a label, or one part of someone's design. It's always about the whole - because you are a whole person with many things that make you, you.Zoe is way more than a Generator who has work force and life force energy and gets frustrated (which is how a Generator would be described without considering their nuances). To stop there would be to do her a disservice. Because she's so much more than that. When you're ready to dive deeply into the nuances of you, head on over to the website to book your reading. Meet Samuel. A 3/5 Emotional Manifesting Generator with a Defined Will He's deeply emotional and built for business. Listen in to understand where this is found in his Human Design.Over the course of 12 episodes, we're looking at the Human Design chart of every member of my family so that you can see how Human Design is so much more than a label or a type. We are Generator types. There are 8 Manifesting Generators and 3 Generators. We are completely different people and you really can't put us all into one category and say “There. That describes you perfectly.” Listen in to see the nuances in Samuel's chart. He's the baby of the family at 28.What You'll Learn:Samuel is a 3/5 Emotional Manifesting Generator, which means that he is deeply emotional AND that his emotions come in waves. How having a defined Emotional Solar Plexus becomes his decision making authority - and what that means. How Gate 22, the Gate of Grace, shows up in his life. His 2 emotional waves come from Channel 37-40 (a tribal wave) and Channel 35-36 (a collective wave). The Channel of 35-36 is the Channel of Evil Kneival energy. But what does that actually mean?Sam has Gate 32 defined, the Gate of Endurance. How having one of the most beautiful Channels in Human Design, Channel 2-14 - The Keeper of the Keys, has shown up throughout his life. With a Human Design profile of 3/5 he is an experiential learner and a heretic, aka. the karmic mirror.Sam's Human Design Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1q1I0QxBuZG37h9sSnt30dEx6tLnZMqv6/view?usp=sharing In every Human Design there are so many gifts. Welcome to the very first Unjaded mini-series!!! There is so much more to the picture than ‘just' your Human Design type. Take my own family, for example. We are the perfect example of how 12 people, with similar profile types, are SO VERY DIFFERENT - all because of the nuances. I'm serious, if you put all 12 of us in a room, anyone that knows us even slightly would NEVER assume we are the same. Spoiler alert - thanks to our NUANCES, we aren't!What You'll Learn:You are more than your Human Design type. How conditioning shows up in our lives and how it impacts us.Human Design is all about the NUANCES.Consider this your invitation to follow along December 13 to 24. Navigating the Holidays, Human Design StyleIf you aren't exactly thrilled with the possibility of your Holiday season matching the Griswald celebration, this episode of Unjaded is for you.The holiday season is beautiful and it's ugly. We set ourselves up with these fancy expectations, running ourselves ragged for the perfect gifts, everyone's favourite foods, and a wrap up of business activities that would make Richard Branson proud.I mean you've got BF - Cyber Monday - and all of the last minute sales strategies to close out the year strong. By the time Christmas actually arrives, we're fed up, worn out, and over it already.Today we're going to talk about a couple of areas of your Human Design and how leaning into your strengths could make the holiday season easier - dare I say, even enjoyable???What You'll Learn:How your unique Human Design will support you with boundaries and expectations, emotional energy, stress and overwhelm.Looking to the Emotional Solar Plexus (or ‘ESP') and Root Centres to help you navigate the holiday season. For the ESP Centre: identifying whether this is defined or undefined for you. Those that are undefined are highly empathetic and navigating the holidays will involve soaking up and amplifying the emotions of others. How to allow the emotions of others to flow through you and identify what is yours - and what is not. Those that are defined are designed to be emotional. Chances are, you've been conditioned not to be. Breaking through this conditioning, allowing yourself to feel the feelings and knowing that they will come in waves. For the Root Centre: identifying whether this is defined or undefined for you. Those that are undefined will feel a lot of pressure, especially during the holidays. How to ground yourself to avoid the overwhelm and give yourself space. Those that are defined have a more consistent way to manage stress (even if not currently USING it). Physical movement is very important to your design. So I know this is a lot. And it can seem like a fantasy to actually honour your design - especially over the holidays. A coach once told me that living your design is not always convenient but it's always correct. She was right.I do hope that you're able to honour at least one thing in this episode as the holidaysapproach. Where can you cut yourself some slack, according to how you're designed tolive? Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy We look at 3 key drivers for next year: first, falling bond yields. We called in October to position for a long duration trade, on the back of likely finished Fed, continued deceleration in inflation, activity softening, and post a big bond selloff. As the move lower in bond yields gains traction, it is initially seen as a positive for equities, but that supportive effect might not hold for too long. Second, sequential activity slowdown vs this year. Our economists are projecting 2024 real GDP growth in almost all key regions at a slower run rate than what transpired this year. Importantly, for 3 quarters in a row next year US real GDP growth is forecast to be between 0-1%. This stall speed is not leaving any margin for error, and it is consistent with underwhelming earnings delivery. While recession is not our base case, it doesn't take much to tip the activity into contraction at such a low starting point. Crucially, unlike a year ago, when almost all economists and the market pricing had recession as a base case, both are in a soft landing camp now - perhaps one should be contrarian yet again. Third, while consensus is looking for earnings pickup in 2024, weaker pricing might lead to disappointments. At sector level, we look for bond proxies such as Real Estate and Utilities to outperform, and have recently cut European Banks to UW. We also find consumer and corporate cyclicals stretched, post a strong run, and have cut a number to UW. Regionally, we continue to find Japan as attractive. Lastly, despite typically favourable seasonals in December/January, current technicals look far from attractive, with SPX RSI in outright overbought territory. Your Human Design Type Isn't the Whole StoryThe longer I'm in the world of Human Design, the more I know that the beauty is in the nuances. So many times people come to me and say things like;“But I'm a Projector and I get lots done. I'm not tired all the time.”“I'm a Manifesting Generator but I'm very focused and strategic.”“I'm shocked that I'm a Generator. I relate so much more to the Projector type.”Here's the thing. There's a lot of moving parts in your Human Design. To stop at your type is just another form of labeling, in my humble opinion. Let's dive deeper, shall we?What You'll Learn:Walking through 3 different examples, we will cover:How nuances show up in your Human Design, that tell you SO MUCH MORE about how you're designed to show up than ‘just' your type does.Looking to your defined and undefined centres for more.Considering your profile lines. How energy and rest play into how you're designed to show up - and what happens when that isn't being honoured. What conditioning is and how it impacts you. Please don't use your Human Design type as another way to conditionyourself to be like everyone else. Let's use it to free you from that homogenizationInstead. The gold is in the nuances. It's in how your design pieces all play together to make you the one time cosmic event that you are. Human Design invites you back to yourself. If you're ready to get to know the person you came here to be, book that reading now.
The Design of a Writer - Stephen King's VoiceStephen King is the ultimate content creation machine. To date, he has written over 65 novels and 200 short stories. The man is a legend.I don't know about you but when I go to a bookstore and see an entire shelf dedicated to an author, I drool. I thought it would be fun to go over Stephen King's Human Design and how he uses it to do his life's work - whether he's aware that he's using it or not.Now - let me just say that it's about more than his design, ok?What You'll Learn:Stephen King is a 6/2 profile and how this influences the tone that he speaks in. Particularly, how being each a role model and a hermit has served his creative career. How having a defined Throat Centre, with 9 of the 11 gates defined (WOWZA) impacts his communication, manifestation and action.People with Gate 57 in their design have a unique gift; and not only does he have Gate 57 - his is his mercury! WOWZA again! There are 4 other energy centres that reach his Throat Centre. Another WOWZA. This drives a lot of how he shows up as a writer. We unpack so much here! With having a completely open Head Centre and Root Centre, he is inspired by everything around him.How this relates to YOU and your own creative process. You don't need Stephen King's lit up Throat Centre or his genius to freak channel to write. You just need to know what YOUR superpower for communicating is.You need to know the tone that you're designed to speak in.You need to know exactly what you're here to communicate and to whom you're here to communicate it to. Who are your people that need to hear from you?Catch my FREE workshop happening TODAY, November 20th, where we will look at why your Human Design holds the keys to your message and how to use it to never struggle writing content again. 3 Human Design Hacks for Content CreationThe online world is full of experts trying to tell you how to find and speak your message clearly. The thing is, there's no one way to do this because your message is so personalized to YOU. As far as Human Design goes, we can't just offer blanket statements that say things like “You're a Generator so you create content like this.” Or “You're a Projector so you create content like this.”Yes, there are things that you'll do by type but your Human Design, like your message, is about the nuances. In this episode of Unjaded, I take you through 3 places to look within your design for your message so that you can easily create content that converts.Listeners are invited to download a FREE copy of your Human Design chart on host Vickie Dickson's website to follow along. What You'll Learn:How the ‘6 profile lines' in Human Design are all about the role that you play in the movie that is your life. This influences how you speak and what you are here to speak. What ‘gate' your conscious Mercury is in, and what that tells you about what you are here to communicate.Whether you have a defined or undefined Throat Centre, and how that impacts the way that you show up to speak. How the centres that reach, or try to reach, your Throat Centre will influence you. When you pair creating content with your Human Design, content will FLOW out of you - promise. It's how you are designed to show up and communicate after all. Don't forget about my FREE workshop happening on November 20th where we will look at why your Human Design holds the keys to your message and how to use it to never struggle writing content again. We reiterate our call from October that bond yields are likely in the process of peaking during Q4, and that one should go long duration. As this view gets confirmation, it is in the short term interpreted by investors as a knee-jerk positive for equities, especially after some derisking that took place in the past months. Having said that, we believe that equities will soon revert back to an unattractive risk-reward into year end. This is especially if 2024 earnings projections start to reset lower. We think that pricing power is waning, profit margins are at risk and the slowdown in topline growth is set to continue. Money supply in the US and Europe keeps contracting. Labour markets are lagging indicators, and could weaken abruptly – continued ytd strength doesn't mean anything for the next 6-12 months. Within this, we have recently advised to tactically close the shorts on China, given fresh stimulus and an already weak ytd performance – this was behind our call to close the shorts on Miners. If bond yields are rolling over, as we suspect, Defensives will get a tailwind, such as Utilities and Staples. We also reiterate our upgrade of Real Estate, done in September, after 2 years of an UW stance. Finally, we have last week cut European Banks to UW. They had a very strong run again ytd, and will likely have a headwind if yields start moving lower. This podcast was recorded on 05 November 2023. Speaker: Mislav Matejka CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy Despite some recent weakness, where SPX RSI turned technically oversold, we believe that the equity risk-reward remains challenging. Divergences between softer activity momentum and the elevated equity prices, as well as market internals, that opened up in the summer, are starting to close, but there is more to go. The PMI rebound that many were hoping for, the call that the weakness in manufacturing will end and join the more resilient services, remains elusive. In addition, real rates upmove is pressuring multiples, and this is even taking out Tech. Finally, Brent and USD rally should be seen as concerning for stocks. Most of Brent upmove is supply driven, and could lead to weaker final demand. Corporates might struggle to pass on rising input costs this time, in contrast to '21-'22. Historically, strengthening USD was almost always met with risk-off in equities. We do not think that bond yields will be able to keep moving up for too much longer, and will likely ultimately fall, and that is precisely because of the “higher for longer” narrative by the Fed. Q4 could end up a very good time to lock in the long duration trade for the next 12 months. SX5E had gone nowhere for half a year now, and has lagged the US since May, coincident with our downgrade to UW – stay short. Even as we remain bearish on China over the medium term, a lot has happened, MSCI China is down 20% since January, and one should not be tactically pressing the shorts into year end, in our view. We reiterate recent call to close the shorts on Miners, and we stay OW Energy. This podcast was recorded on 01 October 2023. This communication is provided for information purposes only. Speaker - Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy Divergences keep opening up between the resilient equity markets and softening dataflow. Manufacturing PMI recovery, that was the consensus call for months now, remains elusive, and there are signs of services weakening, as well. There is no regional convergence coming through, with Europe disappointing further, and China staying mixed. SX5E had gone nowhere for half a year now, and has lagged the US since May, coincident with our downgrade to UW, but the relative performance of SX5E vs bonds has opened up a big gap with IFO, worth 20%+. How will it close? Also, even as Cyclicals finally stalled somewhat in August, the gap with PMIs remains significant. In a sense, bad is so far still seen as good, but this could change if labour market and consumer dataflow starts disappointing. Bond yields look set to move lower in that scenario, which will keep supporting our OW Growth vs Value call that we had on this year, at least in relative terms, but the bond proxy sectors should be logically getting a bid, too. Cyclicals stalled in August, keep fading them, in particular Industrials and Autos. This podcast was recorded on 03 September 2023. This communication is provided for information purposes only. Speaker - Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy The market is increasingly confident that the weak parts of the economy are set to improve, and that the good parts will stay resilient. In a sense, bad is seen as good: “China dataflow is so weak that there must be stimulus, manufacturing PMIs are so weak that they are bound to rebound”. This is producing an interesting divergence in the performance of Cyclicals vs Defensive stocks and the activity dataflow. Compared to a year ago, Cyclicals are up vs Defensives by 20% in Europe and in the US, but manufacturing PMIs and ISM are in contraction territory. Which one will end up right? There was another period when the divergence like this opened up – in 2007, with Cyclicals rallying despite manufacturing activity weakness, and Fed was then also at 5.25%, with the belief that they needed to do more, the same as now. Fundamentally, we think that bond yields will move back down, pricing power is waning, PMIs could indeed converge, but with services coming down towards manufacturing in 2H, as M1 suggests, rather than the other way around, and the hopes of a swift and meaningful China stimulus could remain just that, hopes. The market needs to resolve a basic disconnect: how will the Fed pivot if there is no pain? Bull-Bear has moved into positive territory, Vix is near record low and positioning has increased, there is no more safety net, FOMO is in full swing. Keep UW Eurozone in regional allocation, stay cautious on China, Japan remains our regional OW for this year. Preference for Growth over Value should remain a winning strategy in 2H. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy The real “pain trade” in the market is clearly the breakout driven by Cyclical Value stocks, exactly like what took place on Friday. As a result, MXWO finally closed above the Q1 high. This could have legs if real yields are up for the right reasons, if China stimulates big, or if manufacturing PMIs inflect higher. The narrative behind the Friday move fits some of the above, but we do not see it getting a confirmation. We think yields will move back down, pricing power is waning, labour market signals are more mixed beneath the surface, with WARNs moving up, any China stimulus is unlikely to be meaningful, PMIs could indeed converge, but with services coming down towards manufacturing in 2H, as M1 suggests, rather than the other way around. Up to Friday move, the internal market leadership was extremely narrow. All S&P500 sectors, apart from Tech complex, were flat/outright down on the year. We are more positive on Tech this year than last, but the Tech rally has been quite exceptional, it is looking overbought, and on the other side we do not expect Cyclicals to bounce sustainably. We see Cyclicals stalling again, as typically happens around the last Fed hike in the cycle. Stay OW Growth vs Value, keep fading Cyclical Value, and reiterate last month's closure of Eurozone vs US trade. This podcast was recorded on 05 June 2023. Speaker: Mislav Matejka CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy Beneath the surface, the leadership is turning Defensive, and away from Value & Cyclicals… we think this rotation continues into/around last hike In the past weeks, a range of Defensive sectors, such as Staples, Utilities and Healthcare, have rebounded. They joined the already robust performance of the Tech sector ytd. We are more positive on Tech this year than last, but think the sector is becoming stretched in absolute terms now, especially as good results are out in the open. On the other side, many Cyclical and Value plays are losing momentum, among others Mining, Autos, Retail, Construction and Semis, joining the weaker Banks run ytd. We think this rotation will continue as we approach the last Fed hike in the cycle, on the back of our view that US bond yields will be flat/down, and as the Q4&Q1 acceleration in PMIs, and in particular in European PMIs, starts to wane. The narrow and increasingly risk-off internal leadership adds to the main disconnect that the market will need to grapple with: hopes of a soft landing, without much pain to profits, labour or credit, but at the same time the consensus expectation that inflation will come down quickly and that central banks will be cutting in 2H. We believe that the consensus view that the worst of pressures is behind us will be proved wrong, as the impact of monetary tightening worked historically with a lag. Labour markets are lagging indicators, and could weaken abruptly – continued Q1 strength doesn't mean anything for 2H. We held a view over the past two years that corporate earnings would be resilient, and argued that Q1 results would still be robust, but this is likely to start changing into 2H, as pricing power wanes. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, CFA, Head of Global Equity Strategy We stay OW International markets vs the US, even as Q1 likely marks the peak overall; Keep unwinding longs in Value vs Growth factor; We are still UW Staples, UW Real Estate and Neutral Healthcare, but the big Cyclical rally is set to run out of steam Divergences keep building, on one hand between robust equity prices and falling earnings, where Q4 reporting season has not delivered a typical upswing, for the first time, and on the other hand between elevated P/E multiples and rising bond yields. These are likely to contribute to our view that stocks' highs are in Q1, and will weaken thereafter. The light positioning and the overly bearish sentiment that we were counting on to keep lifting markets in the early part of this year are no longer the case. Positioning has largely normalized, and sentiment is far from negative now, it is hopeful in fact – recession is not a base case anymore for most. Our core view is that the current activity upswing is unlikely to develop into a fully fledged acceleration in 2H. After all, the impact of the policy tightening works with a lag, and central banks are far from even pausing, let alone pivoting. Big picture, we looked for regional convergence over the past year, and encouragingly International markets have done better than the US, with Europe in particular outperforming, in both the local and common FX. We continue to believe that International equities will be trading better than the US, even if, as we suspect, equities do not hold on to the rally seen over the past months. Our key positioning over the past year was to be long Value vs Growth, but we have entered this year Neutral on the Value/Growth trade, advising in October to close the shorts in Tech, and we think the next trade will likely be to go outright UW Value. Sectorwise, we are still outright UW Staples and Real Estate, and only Neutral Healthcare in our portfolio, but look to use the last 6-8 months strong Cyclicals run to reduce the beta of the portfolio as Q1 winds down. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, Head of Global Equity Strategy Some of the equity market supports that we were highlighting in Q4 – peaking bond yields, China reopening, lower European gas prices – are not exhausted, but a lot has repriced. SX5E is up 30% off the lows, and MSCI China up 55%. We argued that supportive seasonals at the start of the year and light positioning would still be helping as we move through Q1, but positioning is quickly normalizing. Sentiment was very downbeat 6 months ago; now investors are more comfortable chasing the market, with a bounce back towards neutral in Bull-Bear indicator, stretched RSIs, rebound in HF betas and a fall in Put/Call ratios. Crucially, we think the fundamental confirmation for the next leg of the rally will end up lacking, consequently Q1 will likely mark a high-water mark for the market. The cushion of consumer excess savings has been eroded, and money supply in the US and Europe keeps contracting. We held a view over the past two years that corporate earnings would be resilient, but this might start changing. Profit margins are at a record, currently much higher than pre-COVID-19, and pricing power is likely to deteriorate from here. Q1 results are coming out mixed, to date, with a sharply reduced proportion of beats, and the typical upward revisions that one sees as we move through reporting season so far are missing. Apart from likely renewed deterioration in fundamentals in 2H, potential curveballs could come from US politics, among other, as the market is now becoming complacent given that VIX is near the low of the range, at only 18x. International markets continue to screen as much more interesting than the US: stay long Europe vs SPX, keep OW FTSE100 and keep OW MSCI China. We were bullish Value vs Growth style last year, but this year look for stalling in Value, especially if our October call for peaking US yields keeps tracking. Finally, use the remaining Q1 rally to cut beta of a portfolio. This podcast was recorded on 05 February 2023. This communication is provided for information purposes only. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, Head of Global Equity Strategy. SX5E rebounded 23% during Q4, to last Friday high. Out of the key supports for the equity market, we called in October for a peak in bond yields, as we believed that the disinflation phase had already likely begun. In addition, we argued in November that China reopening was the next trade and for Europe specifically we called for natural gas prices to fall despite entering winter, as supply is ample. Now, while some of the above highlighted supports for the equity market are not by any means exhausted, a lot has repriced, and the market focus could turn to earnings, which are likely to be weaker, and that could contribute to market consolidation ahead. The peak in inflation, which we believe is very helpful to stabilize P/E multiples, will in turn end up as a negative for corporate profits, especially as earnings benefitted from strong pricing and mix post COVID-19. In addition, the recent better activity prints might not hold. Real M1, our lead indicator, is pointing to more PMI softness. Also, the disinflation path might not be smooth, and US politics, as well as the Fed, could deliver curveballs. Put together, we think the current rally will end up faded as we move through Q1. We advise taking some profits, to tactically reduce equity exposure. Big picture, we looked for regional convergence over the past year, and encouragingly Europe is now outperforming the US in both the local and common FX. Stay with this. We also keep long commodity equities on peaking USD, China reopening and low inventories. We believe that one should start fading the last six months of a Cyclical rebound, and add back to some Defensives that lagged – such as to Utilities, Healthcare and Telecoms, as bond yields, PMIs and EPS revisions are all more likely to be lower, than higher, in 1H. While at some point in 2023 Cyclicals should enjoy sustained bottoming out in PMIs and in EPS revisions, their recent rally could end up looking premature. Foreign Minister Penny Wong has delivered (yet) another speech, this time in Washington DC, and Darren thinks it's a big deal. Is he overreacting? Meanwhile, Allan draws some interesting contrasts analysing the recent 2+2s Australia's Foreign and Defence Ministers held with their US counterparts (AUSMIN) and then with Japan, and also summarises what we know about the Labor government's foreign policy so far. Darren's word of the year is ‘polycrisis' and he (tries to) explain why, while Allan's is ‘statecraft'. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, Head of Global Equity Strategy. We believe that equities will be supported by what is still extremely bearish investor sentiment and very light positioning, as well as improving seasonals at this time of the year. Fundamentally, we think that bond yields are likely in the process of peaking. The disinflation phase has already begun, in our view, even as elevated CPI prints continue, and as bond yields keep oscillating around multi-year highs. Inflation remains a lagging indicator of growth, corporate intentions to raise prices have rolled over, as are now peaking intentions to raise wages. Inventories are building, and that should lead to discounting. Out of the four stages of inflation that we see, commodities, goods, services and finally wages, in our view we are currently moving from second to third in terms of stabilization. While the central banks keep tightening at the short end, the long end could begin pricing in an increasing chance of overdoing it, i.e. of a policy misstep. Further, levels of yields should be capped by the weaker activity from here. If that gains traction, it would go a long way in supporting overall equity market multiple. Second, we believe that China offers a potentially positive catalyst in terms of reopening. China sentiment is at rock bottom and any improvement on this front would be notable. Regionally, we stay of the view that UK and Eurozone are not the easy shorts vs the US as most would believe: Eurozone has never traded this cheap vs the US. UK stays our top DM pick. Value was our key OW for the last two years, and we stay positive on Value parts of the market, but a peak in yields suggests Growth style could also stabilize from here. Pure Defensives look the most expensive. This podcast was recorded on 07 November 2022. This communication is provided for information purposes only. “There are moments when history making creeps up on you,” writes the economic historian Adam Tooze. “This is one of those moments.”Countries across the world are raising interest rates at unprecedented speeds. That global monetary tightening is colliding with spiking food and energy prices, financial market instability, high levels of emerging market debt and economies still struggling to recover from the Covid pandemic. Alone, each of these factors would warrant concern; combined, they could be catastrophic. We're already beginning to see what happens as these dynamics intersect: Britain just experienced a bond market meltdown that threatened one of the most advanced financial systems in the world. Developing countries like Sri Lanka, Argentina and Pakistan are experiencing political and economic crises. The World Bank believes we could be headed for a severe global recession.Tooze is the director of the European Institute at Columbia University and the author of multiple histories of financial crises and near crises and of the excellent Chartbook newsletter. He believes this particular confluence of high inflation, rising interest rates and high levels of debt points to an economic “polycrisis” unlike any the world has seen. And he and others have argued that the U.S. Fed's decision to raise interest rates is a core driver of that crisis. So this is a conversation about the fragile, uncertain future of the global economy at this history-making moment and the Fed's role in it. We discuss what the British financial market meltdown means for the rest of the world, how the interest rate hikes in rich countries export inflation to other countries, the looming possibility of a global recession, why Tooze believes something could break in the global financial system, why countries in South Asia are experiencing a particularly severe form of “polycrisis,” how the Fed should weigh its mandate to bring down inflation against the global consequences of its actions, why he believes analogies to the American inflationary period of the 1970s are misguided and more.Mentioned:“Slouching Towards Utopia by J Bradford DeLong — fuelling America's global dream” by Adam ToozeBook recommendations:The Neapolitan Novels by Elena FerranteYouthquake by Edward PaiceSlouching Towards Utopia by J. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, Head of Global Equity Strategy. We argued last week that bonds are likely becoming oversold, as Fed and inflation sentiment have moved to extremes. We believe that we are already starting a disinflation phase, as inflation remains a lagging indicator of growth. More concrete signs of peaking inflation, as well as of the peaking inflation expectations, and finally the weakness in activity all suggest bond yields should be capped going forward. Earnings have been very resilient, but are likely to finally show a rollover in Q3. Here, we think that the activity reset is what investors need to see in order to start looking through. Also, recession is our base case, but earnings could hold up much better this time around than during past downturns. Eurozone gas prices likely have two way risk from here, not just the upside risk. JPM assessment remains that there will not be a need for outages. Sentiment metrics are at record lows, and positioning appears very light. Seasonals turn much more favourable in Oct-Dec period. While Value was our key OW entering the year, we called last week for a renewed tactical bounce in Growth style, and Tech in particular, to be aided by potentially peaking bond yields. Regionally, UK remains a OW, given extreme valuation discount, as well as a tailwind for exporters from weak FX. We keep pair trade of OW FTSE100 vs FTSE250. In this Deep Dive, Partners Jeff Otis and Jeff Dicks (Evergreen's co-CIO) discuss our most recent Evergreen Chartbook. The Chartbook explores the current state of the economy, markets, and Evergreen's general outlook. Some questions they explore are: What are we seeing right now with inflation? Where do things stand with the Fed? Bloomberg has a 33% probability of a US recession over the next 24 months. Does the yield curve point to a future recession? What is going on in the market? Bonds, treasury yields, stocks, and corporate bonds are all reacting. How do we interpret this? As always, we hope you enjoy the listen! This episode was recorded on May 23, 2022. With the world watching in shock at Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Allan and Darren describe how the crisis, and in particular the world's response, are (and are not) causing them to reconsider their priors about how politics and international affairs works. Allan describes how impressed he has been with Europe's response, while Darren is completely surprised at the speed and magnitude of the economic and financial sanctions imposed on Russia, in particular its central bank. Meanwhile, Allan reflects on the contingency of the Biden presidency, wondering how things would have been different had Donald Trump been president and what that says about the variability of the United States as a factor in world politics. Darren considers the responses of regional powers such as China, India and the ASEAN countries. Finally, they discuss early implications for Australia. There's the Russia-Ukraine war that's easy to follow in the news right now. We can watch Russian bombs falling on Ukraine, see Russian tanks smoking on the side of the road, hear from Ukrainian resistance fighters livestreaming their desperate defense. But there's another theater to this war that's harder to see, but may well decide the outcome: the economic war that West is waging on Russia. Europe and the United States initially responded with a limited set of sanctions but then expanded them into a counterattack capable of crushing the Russian economy. Vladimir Putin, for one, understands the danger: As the force of the West's measures multiplied, he readied his nuclear forces in a bid to warn Europe and the United States off. This is terrifying territory. So I asked Adam Tooze — a brilliant economic historian, the director of the European Institute at Columbia, and the author of the indispensable “Chartbook” newsletter — to explain how the war in the financial markets is shaping the war in streets of Ukraine. What he gave me was a whole new way to see how Putin had readied his country for conflict, the leverage that Russia's energy exports gave it, how the dreams of the globalizers had cracked, and what the West both was and wasn't doing in response. But this is two conversations, not one. On Friday, Tooze and I recorded just as the war began. That was a conversation about the economics of the war as both Russia and the West understood it when the bombing began. But on Monday, we spoke again, because so much had changed. Rather than splice the two discussions into an artificial omniscience, I've linked them, because I think they reveal more in sequence: They show how fast this war is reshaping the politics around it, how quickly the escalation is coming, how rapidly the plans are crumbling. So we discuss the sanctions that the West has deployed against Russia, how Europe's dependence on Russian energy exports undermined the West's response, what Putin understood about the dark side of economic interdependence, how Ukraine's remarkable resistance — and the remarkable leadership of its president, Volodymyr Zelensky — reshaped the politics and policies in the West, how this war could alter the geopolitical calculus of China and Taiwan, the new economic order that is emerging, and more.Mentioned:“Putin's Challenge to Western hegemony - the 2022 edition” by Adam Tooze (Chartbook)“The economic consequences of the war in Ukraine” (The Economist)Book Recommendations:The Economic Weapon by Nicholas MulderThe End of the End of History by Alex Hochuli, George Hoare and Philip CunliffeThe Future of Money by Eswar S. Allan and Darren venture far outside their comfort zones this week to give some thoughts on the escalating crisis between Russia, Ukraine and NATO. This is an interesting and important issue because it brings together so many of the central questions in international relations. These include: the use of military coercion and other forms of deterrence; the behaviour of great powers, the role of diplomacy and signalling; the links between strategic and economic interests; the politics of the transatlantic relationship; the role of alliances; and the practical meaning of norms like ‘sovereignty' and ‘self-determination'. While not all of these can be covered in depth in a single episode, they all inform Allan and Darren as they offer initial opinions of the strategic context and stakes involved. These events are important to Australia because of their potential impact on the international order and, in particular, America's role in it. Along the way, the discussion covers the specific phenomenon of “spheres of influence”, the geoeconomic dimensions, and whether there is any scope at all for for multilateral organisations to contribute. The episode finishes by looking at how the Australian government has responded and thinking about what Beijing's perspective might be. Programming Note: Anticipating The Unintended will be on its annual year-end break for the next two weeks. Normal services will resume from Jan 9, 2022. Happy Holidays. This is the last edition for 2021. There’s always a temptation to look back at the year gone and arrive at some kind of things-we-learnt-this-year list. As much as we’d like to do that, we really have nothing insightful to offer. It wasn’t a great year for most part because of the pandemic and it is ending on a foreboding note. Anyway, so what do we have in this year-end edition? We start with talking about the one overriding emotion that the two of us had through the year. What’s that one constant feeling that summed up our view of most events during the year? We then move on to the predictions we had made at the start of 2021 and see how each of us fared. And we close out with books, newsletters, podcasts or videos that we enjoyed greatly. That’s what is on the menu today. The 2021 State Of MindRSJ: Through the year my mind went back to the lines from one of my favourite poems, The Second Coming by W.B. Yeats. It is somewhat apposite too. Yeats wrote the poem just after WW-1 had ended and during the Spanish flu pandemic. His pregnant wife contracted the flu and survived after a harrowing time. Yeats paints a bleak landscape of disorder and anarchy with warring factions and a divided world order. The voices of reason lack moral strength because the false convictions of the passionate have taken over. To quote Yeats:“The best lack all conviction, while the worstAre full of passionate intensity.”That’s how I felt most of 2021. Funnily enough, I started noticing many variations of these lines over the past months. I guess I lived through the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon on this one. I have collated them here. Back in 1871, in the introduction to his book, Descent of Man, Charles Darwin wrote:“Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.”In his 1931 essay, The Triumph of Stupidity, Bertrand Russell wrote:“The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt. Even those of the intelligent who believe that they have a nostrum are too individualistic to combine with other intelligent men from whom they differ on minor points. This was not always the case. A hundred years ago the philosophical radicals formed a school of intelligent men who were just as sure of themselves as the Hitlerites are; the result was that they dominated politics and that the world advanced rapidly both in intelligence and in material well-being.It is quite true that the intelligence of the philosophical radicals was very limited. It is, I think, undeniable that the best men of the present day have a wider and truer outlook, but the best men of that day had influence, while the best men of this are impotent spectators. Perhaps we shall have to realise that scepticism and intellectual individualism are luxuries which in our tragic age must be forgone, and if intelligence is to be effective, it will have to be combined with a moral fervour which it usually possessed in the past but now usually lacks.”In his essay, A Cult of Ignorance, published in the Newsweek (1980), Isaac Asimov wrote:“Anti- intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge. Now we have slogans on the part of obscurantists: "Don't trust the experts!"... We have a new buzzword too, for anyone who admires competence, knowledge, learning and skill, and who wishes to spread it around. People like that are called 'elitists'....What shall we do about it? We might begin by asking ourselves whether ignorance is so wonderful after all, and whether it makes sense to denounce 'elitism'. I believe that every human being with a physically normal brain can learn a great deal and can be surprisingly intellectual. I believe what we badly need is social approval of learning and social rewards for learning.”Of course, all of this culminated into a wonderful paper by David Dunning and Justin Kruger titled, “Unskilled and unaware of it: How difficulties in recognizing one’s own incompetence lead to inflated self-assessments”. Published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Dec 1999, the abstract of the paper asserted:“People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it.”Thus was born the Dunning-Kruger effect. It owned 2021.Pranay:As for many of you, 2021 was my first year, in many many years, spent entirely at home. Until 2021, there were two neat compartments in my head: a ‘professional’ one and a ‘personal’ one. I associated terms such as ambition, learning, and planning only to the ‘professional’ compartment. On most issues outside that sphere, I thought I could just wing it. To use RSJ’s framing, it was the Dunning-Kruger effect at play in one compartment of life. So, 2021 has been about trying to unlearn many erroneous conclusions I had reached about wellbeing (physical and mental), parenting, relationships, and self-worth. There’s a lot to learn. But just the dissolution of the false assumption that two very different approaches apply to the two spheres of life is liberating. Our Predictions Report CardAt the start of this year, we were foolhardy enough to make a few predictions. We will see how we fared on them.RSJ:Pranay had made an important point about predictions then:“... predictions are susceptible to what Philip Tetlock calls ‘outcome-irrelevant learning’ — a situation wherein no matter the reality, people are in an excellent position to explain that what happened was consistent with their view. One way to check outcome-irrelevant learning is first to make specific, measurable predictions and then reflect on real-world outcomes at the end of the prediction horizon. Which, for this newsletter, means we will do another post at the end of 2021 reflecting on our hits and misses.”I must admit my 10 predictions didn’t exactly fit Pranay’s definition of being specific and measurable. So, as I look back, you can accuse me of conveniently retrofitting the actual outcomes to them. FWIW, let’s see how I fared.Prediction 1: By the end of 2021, we will all realise we overrated the long-term impact of the pandemic on everything. There won’t be any ‘new normal’ to write home about. Things will be more of the same.Outcome: Largely true, I would think. Maybe 6/10 on accuracy. No dramatic shift seen on anything yet. Prediction 2: The size of the stimulus in most developed economies and the amount of liquidity pumped into the system will mean two things – eventual inflation and a repeat of the taper tantrum in future. Deficits have come to mean nothing and any future slowdown in the economy or fall in markets will mean more stimulus.Outcome: Not bad. I guess 7/10 on this.Prediction 3: The stock markets are in bubble territory now. But there won’t be any reckoning in 2021. The stocks doing well during the pandemic will continue to do well. The divergence between the real economy and the street will continue to confound all of us.Outcome: Cannot complain. 7.5/10Prediction 4: The early signs are of a K-shaped recovery around the world. This will be strengthened in 2021. A small set of companies and people will see a rising graph of growth and prosperity. The long-term impact of the pandemic will be to worsen inequality. The early but definite signs of this will show up in 2021.Outcome: Again 7.5/10Prediction 5: Credit offtake will be weak and the revival of consumption story will be dampened because of this. Private investments were trending downwards anyway before the pandemic. Its revival seems unlikely in 2021.Outcome: Maybe 7/10Prediction 6: The Chinese economy will lead the global growth engine. Despite its misadventures during the pandemic, China will continue its rise to the top. The Biden administration will take a more accommodative stance towards China. The trade war will subside and the EU will continue to strengthen its relationship with China. Outcome: Mostly wrong. China has continued to do well but it has its problems. 3/10Prediction 7: Technology sovereignty will be a key theme in 2021. Countries across the western world will assert their technology independence. The most common form this will take is in keeping Chinese technology companies out of strategic sectors like telecom and finance infrastructure services. Or you could expect heavy fines for restrictive or anti-competitive practices and heavier hand of regulations on these (big tech) companies.Outcome: Largely right. China itself came down heavily on its tech giants while Lina Khan, the chair of FTC, continued her tirade against Big Tech. 6/10Prediction 8: How to vaccinate India will be a policy question that will keep everyone busy in the first half of 2021. Everything about vaccines – procurement, pricing, storage, administration and safety – will test our policymakers. My guess is we will do quite well in this entire exercise. Outcome: I guess we did better than what we expected at the start of 2021. We are still behind on booster doses and vaccines for kids though. 7/10Prediction 9: It won’t be a great year for reforms. The wrong lessons will be learnt from the protests against farm law reforms. Plus, the usual set of assembly elections and the weak economy post the pandemic will continue to weigh on the government. So good, bold and much-needed reforms across sectors will again go into the backburner. Outcome: Cannot disagree. Barring Air India sale and some boost to manufacturing, not much happened here. The start-up story isn’t really a government story to own. Then there was the farm law repeal. Enough said. 7/10Prediction 10: The BJP election machine will have a mixed year. Barring Assam where it should keep its majority and some gains in West Bengal, it won’t see much success. The campaign and the narrative building leading up to elections in Assam and West Bengal will not be for the faint-hearted. There will be a plethora of fake news, violence and no-holds-barred Muslim bashing. The signs are already there on the news channels. The opposition will remain largely ineffective with some kind of split happening in the Congress during the year. But there will also be the earliest sign of some kind of coming together of regional parties to counter BJP in 2024. This seems inevitable.Outcome: Well, that looks fairly accurate. So 8/10.Overall, not bad but I will try to be more specific about next year’s predictions.Pranay:This is the report card of the five predictions I made at the start of 2021. Prediction 11: Petrol prices in Bangalore will hit ₹100 at least once before the end of 2021.Outcome: Petrol prices were at ₹86.47 in Bengaluru on 1st Jan 2021. The prediction was based on the reasoning that excise duties on petrol and diesel are the superhero of last resort for state and union governments. As public spending rose in the backdrop of the second wave of COVID-19, both union and state governments took the easy route of increasing taxes on petrol and diesel. Petrol prices hit the hundred mark in June and galloped to ₹113 by November. Since then, they have settled to just above ₹100. Of course, there were no nationwide protests over the issue. No electoral results were attributed to this price hike, even though the rising inflation would have hit many people hard. Prediction 12: A maximum of 2 CPSUs will be privatised by the end of 2021.Outcome: The backdrop of this prediction was the buzz surrounding the union government’s grand scheme to sell its stake in over 25 CPSUs. The Ministry of Finance’s reply in the Lok Sabha has the details. And from what I can gather, just two CPSUs have found a buyer this year — Air India and Central Electronics Limited.Prediction 13: GST will continue to have the current five tax slabs.Outcome: My reasoning behind this prediction was that the fiasco on the GST compensation cess has broken the trust between union and state governments, and the latter will not welcome any further changes in the GST regime this year. Prediction 14: The status quo at Ladakh in terms of territorial control will continue.Outcome: Just yesterday, the Indian Air Force Chief had this to say: “the standoff does continue. Disengagement has taken place in certain areas in Eastern Ladakh. But, the complete disengagement has not yet been done I would not like to go into the details, but suffice to say we are deployed, we are prepared to take on any challenge that may face us in that area with the shortest of notice.”Prediction 15: The number of US service personnel in Afghanistan will fall below 2500 by the end of 2021.Outcome: The prediction turned out to be true of course. But little did I expect that the withdrawal would put the Taliban in full control of Afghanistan. Finally, I also had a note related to RSJ’s prediction on US and China. The Biden administration has, indeed, continued key elements of the previous administration’s trade policies on China. In the high tech domain, the restrictions are likely to tighten further. These were my five predictions. In retrospect, it looks like I made some safe (and obvious?) bets. Read, Saw Or HeardWe will close with our top recommendations of books, podcasts, newsletters et al, that we came across in 2021. RSJ: In no particular order, here are mineThis Is How They Tell Me The World Ends: The Cyberweapons Arms Race. A riveting take on global cyber warfare by Nicole Perloth that reads like a thriller. Walter Issacson’s book couldn’t have been more timely. The history of gene editing, development of CRISPR and how all of it came together to create vaccines for Covid-19 are all part of this absorbing and informative book. The Light that Failed: A Reckoning. Krastev and Holmes on why liberal democracy faltered in eastern Europe. There are lessons for everyone there. India’s Founding Moment: The Constitution of a Most Surprising Democracy. Madhav Khosla’s wonderful narration of the people, the ideas and the debates that went into the creation of our Constitution. Wanderers, Kings, Merchants: The Story of India through Its Languages by Peggy Mohan. A forensic on Indian languages and what they tell us about our history and the evolution of our culture. Civilisation and reclaiming of it is often thrown about loosely in India these days. Our languages hold the secrets of our civilisation. Understanding them may be a useful precondition to whatever it is we are trying to reclaim. Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. A peek into our future where kids are kept company by artificial friends but love still makes the world go round. The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz. A ‘howdunit’ that keeps you engrossed till the end though you figure out the climax two-thirds of the way. Surprising that way.The Reith Lectures: Pranay introduced them to me and I have been hooked since. The Lex Fridman Podcast: The ‘Amit Varma, Sam Harris and Russ Roberts rolled into one’ of science and tech podcasting. Long episodes (many over 5 hours) about deep tech, AI, string theory, ultramarathons, truck driving and whatever else that catches Lex’s fancy.Ideas of India by Shruti Rajagopalan: Great conversations and a much needed platform to hear from young scholars about their work on India. Newsletters: Noahopinion by Noah Smith (original and insightful) and Chartbook by Adam Tooze (the best place to find out about new books and interesting ideas). Also, Strange Loop Canon by Rohit (no idea about his last name) and SneakyArt Post by Nishant Jain - two newsletters from Indians based abroad that I found interesting. Read them. There were other books (esp fiction) and interesting podcast episodes to share but maybe some other time Pranay:Humankind: A Hopeful History challenged my Bayesian priors like no other book this year. The Quillette online magazine usually has pieces that go against the prevailing dominant narratives. Womaning in India newsletter taught me a lot. Anirban Mahapatra’s Gyandemic newsletter is full of TILs on new science findings.Your Undivided Attention Podcast convinced me that our information environment is polluted and we need to take charge of our consumption choices. Allan and Darren cannot resist focusing on the escalated and seemingly personal spat between Australian PM Scott Morrison and French President Emmanuel Macron over Australia's cancellation of the French submarine contract, then followed by the launch of AUKUS. During Morrison's recent international trip, Macron called him a liar, to which the Australian side responded by leaking details of private text messages the French president had sent the PM just days prior to the announcement. In Morrison's words: “claims were made, claims were refuted”. Who is in the right/wrong here? Stepping back, what is the role of honesty and integrity, or truth and trust, in international diplomacy? How much does it matter? Along the way, Darren finds the temptation to develop a potted academic theory of a “Morrison doctrine” too strong to pass up. Let the debate begin! We thank Mitchell McIntosh for audio editing and Rory Stenning for composing our theme music. “The world discovered that John Maynard Keynes was right when he declared during World War II that ‘anything we can actually do, we can afford,'” writes Adam Tooze. “Budget constraints don't seem to exist; money is a mere technicality. The hard limits of financial sustainability, policed, we used to think, by ferocious bond markets, were blurred by the 2008 financial crisis. In 2020, they were erased.”Tooze is an economic historian at Columbia University, co-hosts the podcast “Ones and Tooze,” writes the brilliant Chartbook blog and is the author of “Crashed,” the single best history of the 2008 financial crisis. He's now out with a new book, “Shutdown: How Covid Shook the World's Economy,” which tells the story of the unprecedented global economic response to the pandemic. The central thread of Tooze's work is how the past decade of crises has upended many of the core assumptions that have guided economic policymaking for the past 50 years — including ones that many contemporary economists and policymakers continue to cling to. So that's what we mainly talk about here. But we also discuss how the boundaries of acceptable thought in the economics profession are policed, the actual risk of runaway inflation, the limits of green monetary policy, the fight over Jerome Powell's reappointment as Fed chair, what the Covid crisis reveals about our ability to respond to the climate crisis, the need for a supply-side progressivism and more.Mentioned: “Declining worker power and American economic performance” by Anna Stansbury and Larry Summers “The green swan: Central banking and financial stability in the age of climate change”Book recommendations: The Deficit Myth by Stephanie KeltonStalingrad by Vasily GrossmanEssays in Persuasion by John Maynard KeynesYou can find transcripts (posted midday) and more episodes of "The Ezra Klein Show" at nytimes.com/ezra-klein-podcast, and you can find Ezra on Twitter @ezraklein. John interviews Adam Tooze, a historian, the author of five books on economic history, and a professor at Columbia University, where he is the director of the interdisciplinary European Institute. Adam also writes a newsletter, “Chartbook,” which in its own words, reports on "economic data, images, stories that matter."Adam's two latest books deal with the major economic crises of the past two decades. “Crashed” looks back at the global financial crisis of 2007 and 2008, and explains both its causes and the rescue plan that got us out of it – though not without eroding democracies around the world. The newly-released “Shutdown” analyzes the COVID-19 pandemic's effects on the world economy.John and Adam talk about both crises, their differences, and the mystical workings of the repo market.
