The Podcast are sipping and chatting about the three part documentary called Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. This was made by Jenner Furst and Jennifer Willoughby Nason and is currently available on Netflix - And of course - the actual trial has been going on and wrapped up just a couple of days after our podcast. So many people were talking about this family and the series of events we were all made aware of in the documentary. So if you missed this whole situation, The Murdaughs were a VERY well known family in an area referred to as "Low Country" in Hampton, South Carolina. They had a century old family law firm and seemingly sort of ruled the town, including the police force and officials in the local government. Before he resigned in 2021 amidst fund-misappropriation accusations, Alex Murdaugh (the dad) was a powerful civil litigation lawyer that was basically famous across the Palmetto State. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all state prosecutors who, like Alex, maintained a ton of power and leverage with local authorities. The kitties are trashed but mange to get out most of the details and we have a GUEST who gives us an interesting tidbit NOT covered in the documentary. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, we are talking about the Netflix documentary series “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal," out now on Netflix. Host Rebecca Lavoie interviews directors Julia Willoughby Nason & Jenner Furst. Alex Murdaugh was a third-generation lawyer in a powerful South Carolina family. But their reputation began to crack when his son Paul was behind the wheel during a fatal boating accident. The controversy rekindled interest in other deaths the Murdaughs were connected to - such as the unsolved murder of a high school classmate and the fatal fall of their housekeeper. Then the community was shocked when Murdaugh's wife and son were murdered on their property. While under suspicion, Alex Murdaugh was wounded from a gunshot in what authorities say was a set-up. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched “Murdaugh Murders" yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on. (Listener note: This episode was recorded before the conclusion of Alex Murdaugh's murder trial.)
Jenner Furst, co-director of the Netflix docuseries Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. The three part series shows how the prominent Murdaugh family purportedly used and abused their wealth and privilege. It unravels their legacy beginning with the 2019 boating accident, and features first-hand accounts from those on the boat that fateful night, many of whom have not spoken about the crash or double homicide of Maggie and Paul until now.Reality Life with Kate CaseyPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/katecaseyTwitter: https://twitter.com/katecaseyInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/katecaseycaTik Tok: http://www.tiktok.com/itskatecaseyCameo: https://cameo.com/katecaseyFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/113157919338245Amazon.com: www.amazon.com/shop/katecaseySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Multi-level marketing companies (MLMs) operate in secrecy. They don't want you to know where the products are coming from, how they're being sold, who's making a profit, and how the business works. They only want you to buy. Buy this starter kit, host that party, convince your friends and join the cult—sorry, the “club.” Operating in darkness is how these pyramid schemes build their membership count, branch into new cities, and keep average Americans in debtbut still chasing an empty dream. So how did MLMs even come to be, and if they're so blatantly nefarious, why hasn't the government permanently shut them down? To answer these questions and many more, we brought on Jenner Furst, director of LuLaRich, the documentary that exposes the multi-billion dollar MLM empire, LuLaRoe. Jenner has worked tirelessly to uncover how these entities exist, what causes them to become so cult-like, and how unassuming Americans can fall prey to their money-making traps. We also talk about the hierarchy of pyramid schemes, the culture inside of one, and the uneven pay structure that falsely tricks new members into believing they can strike it rich. You'll learn about the history of MLMs, the so-called “Amway Rules,” and how snake oil salespeople have used social media to grow their empires to even greater heights. In This Episode We CoverThe history of pyramid schemes and MLMs and how they become popularized in AmericaMLMs vs. pyramid schemes and the loose differences between these two types of businessesThe cult-like culture that exists inside an MLM and the blatant red flags that stick outThe false pay structure of MLMs and how they artificially promise returns that are impossible to achieveHow social media and live posts caused the MLM fire to grow even fasterHow pyramid schemes play to people's fears and desperations to get them to joinAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets Money Facebook GroupBiggerPockets ForumsFinance Review Guest OnboardingScott's InstagramMindy's TwitterListen to All Your Favorite BiggerPockets Podcasts in One PlaceApply to Be a Guest on The Money ShowPodcast Talent Search!Subscribe to The “On The Market” YouTube ChannelListen to The “On The Market” Podcast: Spotify, Apple Podcasts, BiggerPocketsCheck Out Mindy's 2022 Live Spending Tracker and BudgetClick here to check the full show notes: https://www.biggerpockets.com/blog/money-369Interested in learning more about today's sponsors or becoming a BiggerPockets partner yourself? It's a scenario most documentary filmmakers dread: someone else is covering the same story. Dueling documentaries are becoming more common, but is competition always bad for filmmakers?Director Jenner Furst came on the pod to talk about this phenomenon, which he's experienced several times throughout his career. Jenner and his filmmaking partner Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro directed Hulu's Fyre Fraud, which came out days before Netflix's FYRE, as well as LulaRich, released just prior to another film on the same subject, The Rise and Fall of LuLaRoe.Jenner talks about how he approached these stories knowing there was a competing doc in progress, how he was able to gain access to some of the films' more controversial participants, and his advice for pitching to streamers.Rough Cut on InstagramVideo Consortium on InstagramHost Jennie Butler on InstagramExecutive Producer Sky Dylan-RobbinsProducer Amy DiGiacomo on Instagram and TwitterProducer Caley Fox ShannonProducer Abhishyant KidangoorEditor Audrey Horowitz on InstagramGot an idea for an episode? Let's kick off Season 3 with a really interesting conversation around MLM's, shall we?Are MLM's a cult? Why do so many end in disaster? The directors of LuluRich, Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason, delve into their why's and how they got LulaRow founders, Mark and Deanne, to talk, and also a burgeoning new category of content: TRUE COMEDY.Our conversation transcends leggings and gets into a more meta exploration of the genre, our broken country, and how it makes us long for something we can't attain so we end up hawking products to friends in the hopes of a life changing opportunity.Jenner and Julia founded Cinemart in 2011( partnered with Jay Z, nbd) and are responsible for an incredible slate of projects including: FYRE FRAUD, TIME: The Kalief Browder Story, The Pharmacist, and Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story. This week on the What's In The Queue podcast, it's all things Fyre. Krishana and Emily chat about the dueling docs "Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Was" from director Chris Smith (the Netflix one) and "Fyre Fraud" from directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughy Nason (the Hulu one). One documentary features the creator of the festival, one documentary features the media company paid to promote it. Join in as we try to figure out what really happened! We'd love to hear from you! A special surprise in this our most relevant episode to date. Just last week HULU and Netflix began having it out with competing FYRE festival themed documentaries. They’ve been slinging mud about it and what it is and isn't in each one is quite intriguing indeed. The Documenteers take Chris Smith’s “Fyre” and Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason’s “Fyre Fraud” and slam them together until there is only one true victor. You remember the FYRE festival thing, right? Easily entranced trustafarians took some model-laced social media bait and shelled out more money than the average american makes in a year to attend a high-end music festival repped by future celebrity Big Brother cast-member Ja Rule, and a spoiled compulsive con-artist by the name of Billy MacFarland. This festival was supposed to feature Blink182 for some reason. What it featured instead was sweaty cheese, FEMA tents, Pigs (which is cool actually), a Monsoon and the sweet sweet tears of twenty-somethings who are not used to not getting what they want. Stuart and Bob Sham got together for a live session. Recorded in segments that also features an EXCLUSIVE dinner session at one of the most DECADENT restaurants in town. This episode will probably compel you to go to www.documenteerspodcast.com to Paypal us tens of thousands of dollars. Fuck that. Hundreds of Thousands! MILLIONS! This episode is so lit you’ll blow somebody to get bottled water out of customs. You’ll have to watch these flicks and listen to the episode to get that one. In the meantime, we fight FYRE with FYRE! Keep on Doccin’®
Episode Two of Doc This! is featuring Annum Shah and her familial documentary, which touches on themes of landscape, identity, and displacement. For your 60-Second Doc Review Nawal Salim takes on the documentary series "TIME: The Kalief Browder Story" created by Jenner Furst, Julia Willoughby Nason, and Nick Sandow. Episode Two is hosted by Sara Wylie and Danny Fisher, edited by John Verhaeven, and produced by John Verhaeven and Kenny McDonald.
