Recounting the Anthrax Attacks: Terror, the Amerithrax Task Force, and the Evolution of Forensics in the FBIIt was September 18, 2001, just seven days after al-Qaeda hijackers destroyed the Twin Towers. In the early morning darkness, a lone figure dropped several letters into a mailbox. Seventeen days later a Florida journalist died of inhalational anthrax. The death from the rare disease made world news. These anthrax attacks marked the first time a sophisticated biological weapon was released in the United States. It killed five people, disfigured at least 18 more, and launched the largest investigation in the FBI's history.Recounting the Anthrax Attacks explores the origins of the innovative forensics used in this case, while also explaining their historical context. R. Scott Decker's team pursued its first suspect with dogged determination before realizing that the evidence did not add up. With renewed energy, they turned to non-traditional forensics—scientific initiatives never before applied to an investigation—as they continued to hunt for clues. These advances formed the new science of microbial forensics, a novel discipline that produced critical leads when traditional methods failed. While the Netflix series focused on the twists and turns of the nationwide manhunt, here on Halteres Presents Dr. Keim is able to more thoroughly delve into the science behind his laboratory's analysis of the 2001 anthrax letters, and to explain why there may never be a true “smoking gun” in this infamous case. Dr. Paul Keim is the executive director of the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute (PMI) at Northern Arizona University (NAU), a joint program between NAU and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) which uses genomic tools to protect America against dangerous pathogens, in particular Bacillus anthracis (anthrax). A graduate of NAU himself, where after 34 years on the faculty he holds the Cowden Endowed Chair in Microbiology and is a Regents Professor, Dr. Keim was trained as a protein biochemist before moving into molecular microbiological genetics and genomics as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah. Dr. Keim is an elected fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy for Microbiology. The National Institutes of Health appointed him to the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity in 2004 and served as its chairman for two years. He has published over 450 scientific research articles that have been cited over 30,000 times. Dr. Graeme MacQueen received his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from Harvard University and taught in the Religious Studies Department of McMaster University for 30 years. While at McMaster he became founding Director of the Centre for Peace Studies at McMaster, after which he helped develop the B.A. program in Peace Studies and oversaw the development of peace-building projects in Sri Lanka, Gaza, Croatia and Afghanistan. Dr. MacQueen was a member of the organizing committee of the Toronto Hearings held on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, he was for a time the co-editor of The Journal of 9/11 Studies, and a member of the 9/11 Consensus Panel. Dr. MacQueen was on my program four years ago to discuss a couple of articles he had written for Global Research, “9/11: The Pentagon's B-Movie” and “The ‘Inside Job' Hypothesis of the 9/11 Attacks: JFK, 9/11 and the American Left” and we discussed his 2014 book, The 2001 Anthrax Deception: The Case for a Domestic Conspiracy in which he provides evidence that the anthrax attacks and the 9/11 attacks, both of which scared the American people into war, were carried out by the same people – people highly placed in the U.S. government.  Dr. Graeme MacQueen was also my guest three years ago, along with Elizabeth Woodworth when we discussed the 9/11 Consensus Panel and the book that was published by the panel called, 9/11 Unmasked: An International Review Panel Investigation. Other articles include, “How 36 Reporters Brought Us the Twin Towers' Explosive Demolition on 9/11” and a piece for Covert Action Magazine, published September 10th of this year, called “Anthrax Attacks Directed Against Public Officials Following 9/11 Had all the Markings of a False Flag Operation.” He was featured in a series of short videos from Off Guardian called “Narratives Intertwined” about the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and its connection to Covid.

October 15, 2001. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle receives an innocuous-looking letter. It has childlike handwriting and an elementary school return address. When an intern opens the envelope, white powder spills all over her clothes and wafts into the air. Soon after, the confirmation comes: Anthrax. This attack is one in a series of letters that arrive at media offices all over the country, just weeks after 9/11. The letters prove to be untraceable, and the investigation becomes one of the hardest and most complex in FBI history. How did investigators close this impossible case? The first American died from anthrax infection on October 5th. During the weeks that followed, letters sent through the US postal system containing anthrax were targeted at US media organizations and sitting US senators. In the end, five people were left dead--two US postal workers, a Florida photojournalist, a New York city hospital worker and a 95 year old widow in Connecticut. Over 22 people were hospitalized from exposure. Many dozens more tested positive for anthrax in the months that followed. It was a one-two punch of guttural horror. Americans were already glued to their television sets, watching 24/7 coverage of planes exploding and iconic skyscrapers crumbling. Over and over, we watched thousands perish. But terrorism was still abstract to those removed from the tragedy. The anthrax attacks changed that, localizing the fear of terrorism to everyone––even your grandma living in the suburbs of Connecticut. Anyone could get a letter. Anyone could be the next target. With the remains of the World Trade Center still smoldering, the Bush administration made several attempts to connect Saddam Hussein to 9/11. The anthrax attacks gave them the perfect opportunity to piggyback ‘weapons of mass destruction’ fears on a very real bioweapons attack. They used willing reporters as instruments to tie nonexistent bentonite from the anthrax letters to Saddam’s nonexistent weapons cache. Journalist stenographers in DC were the conduit for government propaganda, hyping up the threat of terrorism. The anthrax attacks justified the fear-mongering that 9/11 was not simply a one-off incident, and that terrorism was America’s new normal. Not since the Zodiac killer letters had Americans been subjected to such strange visual threats like the block text in short lines that the anthrax letters read: “ARE YOU AFRAID? YOU DIE NEXT.. DEATH TO AMERICA, DEATH TO ISRAEL. ALLAH IS GREAT.” The letters were almost a parody of an islamic terrorist. But who was actually behind the attack? Who had the expertise necessary to secretly manufacture and then distribute weaponized anthrax spores? Who had the motive? Scott Decker served 22 years in the FBI. Early in his Bureau career, Decker, who had a doctorate in Human Genetics, joined the Bureau’s fledgling Hazardous Materials Response Unit in Quantico. On September 12, 2001, he led a team of FBI hazmat specialists to Ground Zero in New York City. Three weeks later, the country came under attack again, this time from anthrax. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Scott Decker reviews working on and later managing the “science squad” of the newly formed Amerithrax Task Force. The task force’s mission was to identify and apprehend the person responsible for the mailings of anthrax that killed five people and permanently injured nearly two dozen more. Decker coordinated the early genetics and DNA forensics of the investigation. He then went on to supervise a squad of agents, all with advanced science degrees, as they coordinated the forensics aspect of the case. Their work charted new ground and established the discipline of Microbial Forensics. In 2009, he and his team received the FBI Director’s Award for Outstanding Scientific Advancement. Scott Decker is the author of Recounting the Anthrax Attacks: Terror, the Amerithrax Task Force, and the Evolution of Forensics in the FBI, in which he was able to write authoritatively on the events that took place during the anthrax investigation, many of which have never before been publicized. Tuesday - Robbie Martin joins us for an in-depth look into the most recent saber rattling between the US and North Korea.
