Britain has a proud history of advanced railway research. It was British Rail who conceived the hugely successful High Speed Train. The BR Research Centre then came up with the brilliant tilting train design of the Advanced Passenger Train until it was scrapped, only for it to reappear years later, when it was sold back to us by a French Italian consortium in the form of the Pendolino. The Railway Technical Centre in Derby was a global centre of excellence. And then at privatisation, we rather lost the plot. The research arm of BR was sold, and research and development became fractured.Fortunately though, the story did not end there and Green Signals recently had an exclusive behind the scenes visit to the University of Southampton where Professor William Powrie CBE and his colleagues are undertaking some amazing research that is not only improving our knowledge, but helping to save hundreds of millions of pounds as well.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/
Segment 1: The Corporate Welfare Problem Sarah Anderson, Global Economy Director at the Institute for Policy Studies, joins us to break down a staggering new report on America's 20 largest low-wage employers. While companies like Walmart, Amazon, and Home Depot report record profits and spend billions on stock buybacks, their median worker pay often falls below the threshold for Medicaid and SNAP. Key Discussion Points: The Buyback Betrayal: How Home Depot could have given every employee a $15,000 annual bonus with the money they spent on stock buybacks. Public Subsidies for Poverty Wages: Why taxpayers are effectively picking up the tab for corporate executives' ultra-wealth. The Policy Solution: Success stories from Portland's CEO pay-ratio tax and the movement to bring it to LA and San Francisco. Segment 2: Transportation Workers Under Fire Greg Regan, President of the Transportation Trades Department (AFL-CIO), returns for his monthly update on the legislative battles in D.C. From "clumsy" bill drafting to the ongoing struggle for TSA dignity, transportation workers are facing a multi-front war. Key Discussion Points: The Overtime Tax Flaw: Why workers covered by the Railway Labor Act are currently excluded from a $25,000 overtime tax deduction—and the coalition of 24 unions fighting to fix it. Second-Class Federal Employees: The urgent need for the TSA Workforce Rights Act to give TSOs the same Title 5 protections as their DHS colleagues. The Jones Act Smoke Screen: Why the administration's Jones Act waiver is "political theater" that won't actually lower your gas prices. Bill Catania of OneRail talks about why visibility isn't fixing the last mile, simplifying complex tech stacks & translating AI investment into outcomes. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [02.49] An introduction to Bill and OneRail, and how their commitment to innovation and collaboration has seen many of their customers become investors. "About a third of our capital has come from our partners – and there's no greater compliment." [05.38] OneRail's attendance at Manifest over the years, and the current conversations dominating the show, from AI to partnership. "AI is the topic of the day. I don't want to say it's an over-used term, but we have to be specific. Is it AI-native, agentic AI or AI optimization?" [07.51] How OneRail has evolved alongside their customers needs, the current landscape of last mile, and how the big factors impacting it are translating into challenges for businesses. "Wholesalers have to solve problems further up in the order stream." "When you have a start-up, you learn more about yourself as you grow. Our early positioning was last mile orchestration. That's not what we are any more. We're a transformation enabler for the whole order lifecycle." [12.21] Visibility alone doesn't solve problems – why execution is key. "Visibility is a great thing, there's a lot of growth from a tech standpoint. But the industry is looking at visibility and saying: 'Now what?'" [14.39] Why visibility is only a starting point, how OneRail future-proofed their platform by building with AI from the ground up, and how companies should be using AI now. [22.43] Why early AI investments aren't necessarily driving the expected outcomes, the importance of simplifying complex tech stacks, and why AI is making SaaS solutions work harder. "There's a lot of experimentation, but it all comes back to working with solutions that are natively producing primary data. And you need to narrow your stack." [25.34] Turning AI and visibility into outcomes. "The problem is not having a clear vision of what the outcomes need to be… Be an expert in your outcomes. If you can't work backwards, I don't see how you can even implement an AI solution." [26.58] How OneRail implemented an AI delivery support solution, where AI answered 41% of calls for faster customer response times and increased profitability, and the importance of finding the balance between people and technology. [28.38] The opportunities for growth when you work with OneRail, how continuous improvement is critical to success, and why OneRail is putting a focus on profit-per-stop to turn transportation from cost center to revenue driver. [33.11] Bill's advice for making your next steps with AI a success. [36.40] The intersection of shopper marketing, payments and supply chain – what excites Bill about the future of the industry, and his predictions for 2026. Oregon state lawmakers packed a lot into the 2026 short session before it adjourned last week. It's also been years since lawmakers, lobbyists, the public and the press have worked together in the State Capitol building. The building has been under construction for the past three years and it has only been partially open during that time. Before the construction project, the COVID-19 pandemic made pretty much everything virtual. The short session that just wrapped up brought everyone back together under one roof to work on a range of policies — from transportation funding to foster care — in just 35 days. Evergreen producer Julie Sabatier tagged along with OPB politics reporter Lauren Dake just before the session adjourned to hear what it was like in the Capitol building. Key Topics: Why EPI research is critical for labor's moral and economic case, the rise of "Solidarity Standards," and how Central Labor Councils are coordinating resource-heavy wins. Segment 2: Securing the Skies and the Streets Greg Regan, President of the Transportation Trades Department (TTD) of the AFL-CIO, outlines a three-front legislative agenda focused on safety as infrastructure. Key Topics: The ROTOR Act and preventing aviation collisions, the RIDER Safety Act to combat rising assaults on transit workers, and the urgent need for federal safety standards for Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) to protect both public safety and American jobs. Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger went behind the scenes of the Fort Peck Hatchery to find out how a King Salmon can go from a tiny egg to one of the most sought after and hardest fighting fish in Montana's largest body of water. This Podcastis destined to be a classic so we thought we would call this one “Rigger and the Salmon Factory”! Yes, we are talking about the mighty King Salmon or more accurately known as the Chinook Salmon, which is the Everlasting Gobstopper of the salmon species, but it is far from being a native fish of Montana. So how does the Chinook Salmon continue to maintain it's population? They won't spawn in Fort Peck Reservoir. There is no way Montana FWP could go out buy fingerlings to stock into the reservoir every year. They have to get them from the Chinooks that are in Fort Peck Reservoir now, but as we said they don't spawn so then how…. That is where Fisheries Biologist Heath Headley and Fort Peck Hatchery Manager Wade Geraets come in. They take the eggs from the dying females and milt from the dying males and turn all that into a brand-new King Salmon every year! How do they do that? Just listen right now. Rigger does a deep dive into all of that and we are positive that you are going to be amazed and entertained by what this podcast for reveals. For example, Heath and his crew collected 895,000 Salmon eggs this year. How do they know that? Those tiny, tiny eggs were counted, no not by Wade's Oompa Loompas, he does not have any of those. So how then? That is just one of the many questions you will get answered when you listen. Rigger even got his buddy The Captain of the Montana Outdoor Radio Show involved. Captain was able to record amazing video of the process while Rigger did a fascinating interview with the Salomon wizards Heath and Wade there at the hatchery. So DO NOT miss the amazing adventure and incredible tale of “Rigger and the Salmon Factory”! Bill Catania of OneRail & Adam Isenberg of National Association of Wholesale Distributors discuss routing - the challenges, the tech & why unification is key. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [03.02] An introduction to Adam and the National Association of Wholesale Distributors (NAW). “We're the leading advocacy and government affairs voice for the distributors, whether you're moving computer chips, potato chips, or anything in between!” [04.34] How listeners can catch up on OneRail content, and why Bill believes in collaboration and connection. [06.03] An overview of OneRail – who they are, what they do, and how they help their customers. “We're really focused on exercising our horsepower around data science and AI to help internal fleets optimize. When you take that internal optimization, and bolt on third-party, you have something really unique. And over the top of all of that is the human component.” [08.12] Traditional routing engines, and their biggest weaknesses. “The problem with routing software in general is that it's really just a calculator… And there are a lot more constraints now; there's a tighter SLA window, more demands on the wholesale channel – the routing solution has to contemplate many more variables, and a lot of the solutions out there don't do that.” [10.32] The biggest pain points right now for distributors, and the impact of changing, multi-generational workforces. “The wholesale distribution industry, as vast as it is, are laggers in technology historically. But now, with the advent of so much technology, changing so fast, you're seeing distributors say: ‘We can't wait any longer.'” [14.33] The business impact of using routing engines that can't consider all the relevant inputs. [18.13] How exceptions and traditional routing solutions erode profitability, the importance of extracting tribal knowledge in the workplace, and how new technology can allow businesses to make smarter decisions, reducing costs and empowering teams. “It's about being able to move those levers in real time, and that's the difference between the visibility era and the actionable insights era, which is where we are today.” [24.16] The challenge with change management and how new technology can ease the transition and remove friction. [26.38] The importance of leaning into tech, and how wholesalers are balancing rising delivery expectations and cost pressures with data-driven decision-making. “People want to make informed decisions but they need data, they need intelligence. And when you have a software and a partner that provides you real-time intelligence, that's how people are going to make those informed decisions to drive their business forward.” [30.19] Why many dispatchers ‘swivel-chair' between systems, and why it's such a big problem. [33.57] The new mindset, innovative distribution strategies and technologies NAW members are adopting to improve fulfilment and the last mile. [37.04] Why OneRail is uniquely positioned to lead the future of last mile, and why their network is as important as their software. “We have a large network that allows us to execute; not just connect with a courier, but pick a courier because of price, quality, time of day, zip code, SKU… So when we're matching a delivery, it's extremely informed.” “It's a chief supply chain officers best friend, because it allows that professional to let their team do their job, but be more accountable; to leverage external partners and bring their data back in, make sense of it, and apply it.” [42.21] How partnerships between wholesalers, carriers and technology providers are shaping the future of last mile. [46.20] The future of last mile, and why the market is finally coming to OneRail. Bill Catania of OneRail talks about fleet management - challenges & opportunities, change management & achieveing competitive advantage with a hyrbid model. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [03.31] OneRail's rapid growth and ‘work hard, play hard' culture. “It's all about work hard, play hard. We take our role in serving our customers very seriously… But we're not afraid to play too!” [04.22] The importance of partnerships, OneRail's customer strategy, and why they don't take serving big category leaders for granted. [05.52] An overview of OneRail – who they are, what they do, and how they help their customers. “We help customers marry fulfillment and last mile delivery to create one seamless transaction… We're the connective tissue of an omnichannel fulfilment journey.” [06.43] From fleet optimization to last yard, the evolving landscape of last mile delivery and some of the biggest challenges shaping that evolution. “We're seeing the optimization of internal fleets being a big thing for wholesale. And wholesale is now tuned into the way retailers think… You wouldn't have seen that five years ago.” [10.18] The biggest areas of opportunity for retailers, and the ways last mile can help businesses to rise above the challenges. “For retailers, it starts with re-thinking the way they've thought for decades... Re-networking, thinking about how the different modes work together, and being able to optimize them, is everything. Every retailer on the planet wants to fulfil faster, more dependably, and at less cost – that's the normalizing problem.” [11.54] Why fleet management is an increasingly important consideration for businesses looking to tackle challenges, enhance customer experience, and scale for success. “It's all about competitive advantage – how do I use fulfilment as a weapon, to gain market share?” [13.41] Why internal fleets are increasingly hard to justify in today's on-demand economy, and the potential in outsourced fleets. “The holy grail for industrial and wholesale distribution is the merging of internal and external fleets.” [17.59] OneRail's commitment to solutioning and working closely with customers. [19.15] From utilization rates to revenue yields tied to assets, the biggest red flags that signal your internal fleet might be holding you back. [21.31] What a hybrid fleet model looks like, the strategies businesses can employ to build a successful hybrid model for themselves, OneRail's role in helping customers navigate change, and why every transformation is a process, not a one-off. “We learned a lesson. We need to do more in speaking with the end user… It's nice to spend time with the person in the warehouse or the store, and that's what our solutions team does.” [29.38] A case study exploring how OneRail helped an automotive customer launch and fulfil a 90 minute or less express delivery product, which has grown to almost 10% of their current delivery volume, driving real competitive advantage, enhancing customer experience and boosting revenue.
