Jennifer Iannolo and I sat down to talk about the incredible work she's doing to make an impact on bringing a voice to women entrepreneurs globally. Jennifer has a phenomenal story to tell and I had such a great time talking with her. We talk about everything to her having the opportunity to fly around the world to taste delectable food, the founding of her incubator, taking inspiration from Jay-Z, why she felt that her world had come full circle when moved into her office at the new World Trade Center, and so much more. Make sure you check out the work that she's doing over at Imperia, which is a global innovation incubator and leadership development program for women who are changing the world for better. Note: My goal as far as timing goes is to keep the episodes to 30 minutes or less but this conversation was so good and I think it'll be helpful to so many that we neared the 45 minute mark. When Brennen and I started this podcast, we knew the topic of getting unstuck would resonate but we didn’t realize how many people would have such powerful and interesting stories that they were willing to share with us like the one from Jennifer Iannolo, whom I interviewed on our show today. She went from being in the world of luxurious food and wine and starting the FIRST food podcast to learning she had a debilitating disease that forced her to switch gears and change careers...and boy did she change careers. Check out the episode to find out how she got unstuck in a major way! About Jennifer Iannolo: Jennifer Iannolo is a global speaker and empowerment catalyst. A lifelong entrepreneur, she is the founder and CEO of IMPERIA™, an innovation incubator focused on women creating social impact projects around the globe. IMPERIA brings together women from 195 countries to develop their leadership and provide a strong sense of community, with programming based on Jennifer’s methodology of Self-Directed Empowerment™, which illustrates how one can become one’s own renewable, sustainable source of power. The theory is highlighted in her recently-published empowerment manifesto, No One is Coming. Jennifer speaks on empowerment and entrepreneurship at venues from the United Nations to Harvard University, and corporate headquarters like Konica Minolta. She is also a featured speaker on women’s entrepreneurship for the U.S. State Department, which has sent her on tours throughout India and Nepal. When she’s not on stage, Jennifer is at IMPERIA’s headquarters atop the World Trade Center, where she and her team have dedicated themselves to building resilient female leaders, including the recent $1M winner of the WeWork Creator Awards Global Finals. She is also a mentor for Nile Rodgers’ We Are Family Foundation. At the peak of her dream career, Jennifer Iannolo was chasing after truffle dogs in Italy as a digital pioneer and co-creator of the first food podcast network – then 25 years into her entrepreneurial adventures, boom, she has to completely reinvent her work and life because suddenly, her body was intolerant of major food groups (like bread, cheese, garlic and wine). Today, Jennifer is the founder and CEO of IMPERIA, an innovation incubator focused on women creating social impact projects around the globe. In this Business Builders Show interview, Jennifer shares the “what would mom do” philosophy that snapped her out of her funk, the questions she asked herself that led to creating IMPERIA as well as her Self-Directed Empowerment methodology. Jennifer recently published “No One Is Coming: An Empowerment Manifesto” (a precursor to a book due out in 2020) – and she shares with us why should couldn't wait to two years get her ideas out in the world (perhaps an idea for listeners of this show who are aspiring authors). You'll think about empowerment differently, shift the lens on your own situation and so much more after this conversation with serial entrepreneur, Jennifer Iannolo. So often we disempower ourselves because we look through a lens of excuses. When our businesses aren't doing well, we'll say, “The economy is bad” or “Email marketing is dead” instead of looking for ways we can do better. It's time to stop depending on others and find strength within ourselves. My guest today calls this “Self-Directed Empowerment.” We have to have personal accountability to be able to withstand failure and struggle. Taking responsibility for your circumstances is not about blame, it's about owning your space. To dive deeper into the idea of succeeding in spite of limitations, I've brought on a global catalyst of human empowerment Jennifer Iannolo. Through her keynote talks, workshops and private coaching for organizations including the United Nations, Harvard University, Konica Minolta, and the US State Department, she is building resilient, unstoppable humans with her method of Self-Directed Empowerment. To learn how to stop making excuses and utilize your own power, listen to this episode now. THE WONDER WOMAN WARRIOR “Empowerment is a sustainable energy source.” - Jennifer Iannolo Highlights - No one is coming. You need to own what you're bringing to the table. Exponential Impact: if you educate a woman, you educate a village. The way we've been defining empowerment is wrong. We don't want anyone to depend on us for empowerment. Self-directed empowerment is building resilience. Check your lens: everything we experience in life is dependent on what lens we look through. There is a difference between personal accountability and beating yourself up. Eliminate “Zero-Sum Games.” In a zero-sum game, one team wins and another loses. When collaboration happens, it's magical. Take responsibility. Colleen sits down with entrepreneur and speaker Jennifer Iannolo to talk about empowerment, equality and equity. Jennifer wants us to rethink how we approach empowerment and equality as a zero sum game and worries that our current way of doing things is laying groundwork for a different kind of inequality down the road.
