I spoke to Alaa live on my Instagram on the 29th of September about his life journey and what took him to where he is now in Turkey. Alaa is a businessman and owns a restaurant in downtown San Fransisco called Elixiria. His business has featured in Hoodline and Timeout and has had a lot of great success. Unfortunately, it closed during the pandemic, and he does state he is unsure of the future. Alaa talked to me about being born in Jerusalem and moving across to America with his parents at two years old. He states he is from a Palestinian background and the reason why his parents moved across was to get a better life. When it comes to travelling, Alaa has been all over the world. He has also lived in numerous countries outside of the United States. Alaa does explain that when it comes to a transformative moment, that came when he first travelled outside of the United States, saying his upbringing as an American was in a bubble. He meant that his bubble got burst when he travelled to another country and realised there was more to life than the United States. Alaa goes on to explain to me that American culture is like pop culture. He said it sounds great at first, but after a while, it gets boring. This all stems from just travelling and getting a new perspective on life away from the American culture. One of the best things he experienced in his career was getting invited to a Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Nairobi, where Barack Obama gave the talk. He said there were very notable people in the room with him, and many of them spoke to him about the initial struggle. Whilst living in Turkey, Alaa has travelled all over the country several times. He said the country is an extraordinary place and there is still so much more to explore. He told me that he arrived with his wife, who was pregnant at the time, and their idea was to go across to Isreal to stay with family and get help with the baby's initial upbringing. Unfortunately, Alaa and his wife get separated, and his wife gave birth to their son, Omar, in Jerusalem, Isreal. You will find out that he still hasn't seen his son. Alaa does go into detail about why that is. He is in two minds whether he will go back to the United States and return to the life he had before. He states again that America isn't what is portrayed in the media in his own opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed my talk with Alaa. I found it educational and a bit of an eye-opener. I enjoyed meeting him in Istanbul later during my trip, and we have kept in touch ever since. I look forward to seeing what the next chapter in his life looks like. It's someone who shares value in any industry.” his positive and negative experiences getting started in entrepreneurship in his teens. how he planned for his business during the pandemic. how he explored and deepened his current connections. the importance of your network to gather information and learn new things. the mindfulness he keeps about his clients, customers, and relationships and how that changes how he networks in certain situations. how he builds his network. his new lifestyle business venture and a sneak peak into his new book. how he nurtures and sustains the outer layers of his network. Deena Shakir is a partner at Lux Capital, a venture capital firm that manages more than $2 billion.  She is particularly interested in entrepreneurs building breakthrough companies enabling human and environmental health, access, and productivity. While her immediate background before joining Lux sounds familiar – she was a partner at GV (previously “Google Ventures”) – her path before that is a bit more unusual.  As a journalist, Deena once hosted the pilot episode of a bilingual Arabic-English TV news series modeled after 60 Minutes.  Deena was also a Presidential Management Fellow at the U.S. Department of State under Secretary Clinton, where she helped launch President Obama’s first Global Entrepreneurship Summit in 2010. She is the first-generation daughter of immigrants from Iraq and speaks fluent Arabic and French. In this episode, we discuss a range of topics, from her experiences as an Arab-American to her path from Washington to Silicon Valley.  We also discuss the impact COVID is having on the venture business, and families like hers.  Also covered:  The unique craziness of online parenting groups. EPISODE EXERPTS On Education “Education, is an area I’m passionate about, where I've made investments like that in a company called Mos. Mos is using artificial intelligence to make the process of searching for financial aid easier. Clearly, there were already platforms for you to search for scholarships. However, they've made that much more sophisticated, and the process is so much easier now. And this was meaningful for me personally because that was a process I went through. I paid for college by myself, patching together all these scholarships. And now that is something that is changing the lives of students on a daily basis.” On Women in Venture Capital “ In terms of women in venture, I think we've obviously we've come a long way, particularly in the last three years. I joined the venture world maybe three months before that moment, if you want to call it that, where everybody realized this was an actual problem.  It was in the summer, I think, of 2017 when a lot of this came to light. I think we still have a very long way to go. Some of the solutions may have potentially created additional problems around tokenism, for example, around cliques around  certain folks or groups taking up all the oxygen in the room, et cetera. But that being said, I've seen some really great progress.” On Software “When it comes to software specifically, the democratizing piece of it is what gets me really excited. I get really excited about technology that streamlines analog industries -- that allows people to do things more quickly -- whether that means grassroots organizing or whether it means accounting.” On the Impact of the 9/11 Attacks “Being in high school, a teenager, during 9/11 -- being a Muslim and Iraqi American, that was a really pivotal moment for me. It was the first time where I felt like these two parts of my identity that really always felt like they were fluid and just part of who I am -- all of a sudden it seems like they weren’t to some people.  That really was troubling for me.” Deena on Twitter       https://twitter.com/deenashakir Lux Capital                             https://luxcapital.com Something Ventured           https://somethingventured.us

Most entrepreneurs are addicted to the hustle. They think that a never ending to-do list of writing email newsletters, queuing up the next Facebook ad campaign, tweeting their latest blog post, and launching new programs is the foundation to success and path to fulfillment. That’s not to say those aren’t effective at growing your business—and they might be just what you need to do to show your business who’s boss… … but what if there’s a smarter way to hustle? What if we skip the to-do list? And, what if we find that by skipping the hustle as-is and take a smarter approach that we build our fan base, strengthen our skills, and heighten our brand all in one fell swoop? On today’s episode, I’m chatting with an old friend from my networking days, Ramon Ray. Ramon is the founder of Smart Hustle Media, a content platform for small businesses. Ramon Ray’s Show Notes Ramon Ray is an entrepreneur, author, and speaker who loves burnt pancakes, bacon, and eggs. He is the founder of Smart Hustle Media and has started four companies (two of which he has sold). Ramon has authored four books. His latest book is “The Celebrity CEO: How Entrepreneurs Can Thrive by Building a Community and a Strong Personal Brand.” Ramon has been invited as an expert witness to the United States Congress. He has also been invited by the Office of the President of the United States to speak at the White House on personal branding. Additionally, he has produced many events including the “Smart Hustle Small Business Conference,” “Small Business Summit,” “Small Business Technology Tour,” “Small Biz Big Things” and more. Ramon’s expertise is in technology, marketing, sales, business startups, and growth. His favorite topic is personal branding. He interviewed President Barack Obama during the President’s first live Google Hangout and was part of the US Delegation to India, led by Ivanka Trump, for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. Most passionate about I love what I do. I educate business owners on how to start and grow their businesses. I’m neither a consultant nor a coach. We have events, we have online content, we have blog posts and a podcast. I also work with leading brands, both small and large, to help represent them and add credibility and authenticity to their messages. We might help those brands create content. I can also speak at their events, host their live videos, etc. I have a community of business owners. I work with brands and help them better reach their target audiences. And I love it every single day. My secret wish? Some of your audience may know Steve Harvey. He’s kind of like Oprah Winfrey, except he’s a guy … so, my goal is to have my own TV show. Even though TV is kind of dying, I still want to have my own TV show. This is my only goal. Ramon’s career From a young age, I was fascinated by technology. When I became an adult, it stayed with me and I discovered the Internet. So, I’m a geek… Then I discovered that you could put content online. I’ve been blogging since 1991. Ramon’s customers On the one hand is the community that I serve. We don’t make as much money from them; it’s not a big revenue driver. I like to call this community “Smart Hustlers.” They look like me. There are companies that are not trying to be billion-dollar venture-backed companies. We specialize in those that want to be profitable but live a great life. On the other hand is, of course, the brands. Every global brand, or even a smaller brand, that is spending money to market to small businesses is our potential client. Ramon’s best advice for approaching customers What are you doing to get attention? What are you doing to get leads? What are you doing to convert these leads into customers? This is half of the equation: attention to attract the leads and convert them into customers. The second half is: How are you different? How are you special? A third thing is the long-term game. I’m all about relationship-building. Of course, we all need to eat. So, first, do whatever you need to do to get food and provide for your family. But if you have some revenue getting in, go for the long-term game. Build relationships. Biggest failure with a customer Everybody has failures. Some are more catastrophic than others. This is a more recent failure. I think that I haven’t been focusing on leadership in my business as much as I’ve been focusing on what I call “Speed & Feed”: Twitter, Facebook, retargeting, AI, bots, and the like, which are important. However, now I’m more focused on things that no one else can do. The failure is that I wish I had done this before. The second is very tactical. I do events. I tried to expand

He is a tech trailblazer, revolutionizing the approach to education in Jamaica. #PeakPerformers, Gordon shares about his gamification business on TheEntrepYou today! Click To Tweet Show  Notes: What crazy activities do you dream of trying someday? I want to do sky diving and snowboarding off a mountain. When and why did you start EduFocal? I started in late 2011. We officially launched March 15, 2012. We just celebrated our 5th birthday. We borrow methods from video gaming and implemented it into the learning process. We use the level up system and the leader board. We offer over 15,000 test prep questions for students. They pay a subscription fee and then they start answering questions. Once they answer the question correctly, they are earning experience points and they're leveling up and winning prizes at the same time and being ranked on the leader board. That's fun for students, especially the younger ones. They find it interactive and captivating. At the conceptualization, how did you know that this model would be effective? To be honest I didn't. We did no surveys before. It didn't cross my mind at the time to do any testing. I kind of went out on a limb, built this application and then looked for feedback afterwards. And that's a terrible idea, don't do that! Take us through the failures… When we started out we anticipated that we would have gotten a lot of traction from the teachers as it was supposed to be teacher and student-centric. Our original plan was that teachers would come on, they would add their questions and their content. Based on the engagement of the content, they would be compensated. If you're a teacher on the platform and students are engaging your content in a big way, that would determine how much you're being paid at the end of the month. We saw that a lot of teachers weren't trained to use computers or they weren't interested. They were indifferent to the entire thing so we had to shift that model a little bit and focus more on it being student-centric. This was a big shift or a pivot into focusing on something else. We should have at least went out and spoken to the teachers first to get feedback to determine if this is something they would have been interested in. Another one is that I hired too early and hired the wrong people. I wasted a lot of money ‘un-learning'. I think I was caught up in the hype to say that I have a team. I'm happy that I learnt those lessons early. What are some of the elements that you look for in a team? We look for people who are committed to change; to work on something that is not easy but is rewarding and fulfilling work. I prefer to work with younger people that are not as hardened in their ways. I look for people who are go-getters who can take initiative. I look for entrepreneurial people. How did you get buy-in from the students? Before we got buy-in from the students we had to get buy-in elsewhere. We needed teachers, so we changed the way we were engaging them. I worked on getting credibility in the market place. People saw the media as validation for what you're doing; people take the media seriously and that give you credibility. The awards did that as well to validate – my first big award was the PSOJ's 50 Under 50 Award a couple months after I started EduFocal and that set things in motion for me. That has been my strategy from day 1. We've been featured on BBC, the UK Guardian, Virgin, Richard Branson has mentioned me in articles he's written, we've been featured in the Trinidad Guardian, Trinidad Express and so on helping to push EduFocal credibility. What has accounted for your level of success?
