Guest: Dr. David Cobbs, PhD, is a Clinical Neuropsychologist in Dallas, TX   This is the second part of a meaningful and practical conversation with Dr. David Cobbs - he begins by sharing about the “mechanisms” that he's put in place to draw closer to others and to God - some call these the “spiritual disciplines.” You need to put these practices in place not only to hold you accountable, but also so that you can look back and do some healthy self-evaluation so that you can do better moving forward!   If you're a “Type A” personality - meaning that you're driven - it means that you have that personality that could be successful in your spiritual and family life too…if those things are your priority! You have to make the commitment to prioritize the important things…and then follow through with those commitments.   If you haven't been doing this in the past, NOW is the time to make the adjustment - and find people around you to help you and hold you accountable. Consistency is key. Also consider your Return on your Investment (ROI) - as you invest in others, seeds of connection and commitment are planted and you will reap the harvest of good relationships in the future.   Single guys - start putting these disciplines in your life and you'll attract a spouse who sees these things as valuable and meaningful. It is critical to surround yourself with good friends who “spur you on to love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24). Start with getting your relationship with God “right” first…then all your other relationships will be dramatically affected by this foundational relationship.   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Guest: Dr. David Cobbs, PhD, is a Clinical Neuropsychologist in Dallas, TX   Loved hearing the story of David's spiritual journey - how the power of POSITIVE peer pressure can help push you toward good things and keep you from bad things! David really started to grow in his spiritual life in high school - the younger you can get on the path of right living, the better off things will be in terms of living without regrets and disappointment!   True friends share life together. It's good to have good friends and far too many men do not have quality friends around them. Remember, a good definition of a friend is someone who shares the most truth with you. How do you develop meaningful relationships with others - David will tell you that you have to be intentional about spending time together - as Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, “doing life together.”   T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. "FND is one of the most common disorders that you've never heard about"
Dr Damon Ashworth, Clinical Psychologist, interviews Dr Harvey Jones, Clinical Neuropsychologist on one of his specialised interests - functional neurological disorder (FND). Harvey is at the forefront of the healthcare system in helping people with FND better understand what is going on for them with their brain and physical health, and what they can do about it. FND is one of the most misunderstood conditions out there. A diagnosis of FND does not mean that "it is all in your head". Psychology is involved, but this does not mean that people with FND are feigning or making it up in any way. If someone was really making things up, they wouldn't be out there searching for answers and solutions. Please listen to part one of our series on FND to learn more. If it sounds like anyone that you know may benefit from learning about FND too, please share it with them!

#301 In this episode, Dr. Mario Martinez and Guy discussed the impact of cultural beliefs and upbringing on longevity and wellness. They emphasized the importance of gratitude in boosting oxytocin levels and how expressing appreciation can have significant benefits. The conversation delved into the spiritual aspect of taking care of one's body to maximize energy and fully embrace life. Tune in for valuable insights on nurturing the body to live each day to the fullest. About Mario: Dr. Martinez is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in how cultural beliefs affect health and longevity. He proposes, based on credible research evidence, that longevity is learned, and the causes of health are inherited. For the past 25 years, he has studied healthy centenarians (100 years or older) worldwide and found that only 20 to 25% can be attributed to genetics - the rest is related to how they live and the cultural beliefs they share. Dr. Martinez does interviews on Zoom or live.  He is the author of the bestselling book The MindBody Code that teaches his theory and practice of biocognitive science for the general public as well as professionals in the life sciences. In addition to longevity, he also lectures on why our immune system is not just a protector. Instead, it responds to the cultural premises we learn to perceive the world. Key Points Discussed:  (00:00) - How Centenarians Transcend Biology and Embrace Spiritual Timelessness (07:10) - Longevity secrets of centenarians. (09:12) - Perception and biohacking. Nearly two decades of (systematically oppressed) research have revealed the chronic stress of structural and systemic racism as a damaging force on our brains.Dr. Fani, the head of the "Fani Lab" specializing in trauma neuroscience (including PTSD), sheds light on how her lab has long examined racial trauma as a unique form of trauma, a concept initially dismissed in the predominantly White field she operates withinuntil the tragic murder of George Floyd catalyzed change.During their conversation, they explore:The systemic challenges faced by women of color in researching and publishing on racial trauma. The influence of Dr. Fani's racial and cultural identities on her work.Key discoveries from the Fani Lab and collaborative research.Insights into how racial trauma contributes to neurodegeneration and its links to high rates of diseases like Alzheimer's in Black communities.Dr. Fani's aspirations for the practical application of this research.Suggestions for healing from racial trauma and providing much-needed rest for our brains. This episode validates what so many of us already know and experience: the impact of racial trauma is real. EVOLVE 89 is different than our normal episodes as we had Steve joined in a round table discussion about brain injury, brain health and how it plays into you overall health. Why we are talking about a topic like this on the EVOLVE podcast? Steve says “I would say there are a few reasons. First, as we discuss what a brain injury is many of you may recall a time where you experienced something that fits the definition. This episode can shed light on this topic and expand your understanding Second, there are more than 5.3 million individuals in the United States who are living with a permanent brain injury-related disability. That's one in every 60 people. Third, In addition to the 5.3 million with a TBI there are at least 2.8 million Americans sustain traumatic brain injuries in the US every year…so if YOU don't have a brain injury you may know someone who does. And finally, the reason we are doing this episode is because I fundamentally believe that if there is a topic that I don't know about I want to learn more. Education and awareness open up my mind toward personal growth and evolution and I have a passion for living, learning and sharing with you” Join Steve as he interviews Dr Alina Fong, Co-Founder, Clinical Neuropsychologist and Clinical Director of CognitiveFX, and former guests Ashley Iverson and Jennifer Salerno about the prevalence of traumatic brain injuries and how awareness can lead to empathy, understanding and proper care and healing.  Both Ashley and Dr Fong sit on the board of The Brain Injury Alliance of Utah and work with the organization to provide resources and support to all Utah brain injury survivors.  Jen Salerno bravely joins the group to share her powerful perspective on being a brain injury survivor and how her traumatic brain injury has evolved over the years.  Steve says “this is probably the most powerful and eye-opening recordings we have ever done. Dr. Rex Jung only had one introduction to psychology class during his entire undergraduate career at the University of Boulder, CO and admitted, at the time, psychology wasn't his path. Instead, he graduated with a BS in Finance and was working for several years in the business world before he found his passion. It wasn't until he started volunteering for the Special Olympics that he became fascinated and interested in how the brain works. Now in his late 20's, he decided to explore what kind of work was available in that area and psychology, in general, was one of the paths. He states, “I discovered later, neuropsychology was the particular path that would get me to where I wanted to be.” In this podcast, you will learn more about Dr. Jung's unconventional career path in psychology. If you want to follow the typical academic path and become a professor in psychology, this episode may not be for you. However, if you are looking for inspiration and advice on how to find your passion and turn that into a career that, as Dr. Jung states, “tickles” your brain and makes your “brain sing,” then this is the Master's in Psychology Podcast episode you don't want to miss. To make the strange transition from finance and business to psychology, Dr. Jung started in the clinical psychology program at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD so “that I at least look plausible” as an applicant when applying to PhD programs. Dr. Jung shares the backstory leading up to starting graduate school at Loyola. He had to move furniture in both Colorado and Baltimore to put himself through school and to provide himself with food and lodging. While he was in Baltimore, Dr. Jung did many things. He worked at the National Institute of Aging in a research laboratory of personality and cognition. He volunteered at Shock Trauma Hospital as a neuropsychology technician doing testing and also volunteered at Johns Hopkins in neurosurgery (and pediatric neurosurgery), so he was able to see the medical training and neuropsychological aspects of the field which helped him decide on a graduate school and realize that “it was the specialization of neuropsychology that was the best fit for me.” His National Institute of Aging job and Shock Trauma job later turned into paid positions so he could eventually stop moving furniture and that is when he had enough money to start graduate school in the master's program in clinical psychology at Loyola. Dr. Jung had two main criteria for PhD graduate schools. First, there had to be mountains in or near it. Second, there had to be snow. He missed the western part of the country, so he applied to schools all up and down the Rocky Mountain range. He was a little over a year into his master's program when he was accepted and started his PhD at the University of New Mexico. He recalls that many of his classes transferred from the master's program to the PhD program at UNM. After receiving his doctorate in clinical neuropsychology, Dr. Jung followed the advice of his advisors and found a place outside of New Mexico for his internship. He looked around and found that the best research was being done at Baylor College of Medicine, so he applied there and a number of other places and was accepted at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. While there, he worked side by side with neurologists and neurosurgeons to do awake craniotomies “to test patients while they're undergoing neurosurgery to determine if you're cutting part of the brain that is important to ongoing cognitive functions.” He still had family in Albuquerque, so he made fifty round trip flights during that year. He states, “it was an important, hard, expensive year, but I got the experience that I needed.” Dr. Jung is a licensed psychologist and a practicing clinical neuropsychologist. He is president and owner of a private neuropsychology practice called Brain and Behavioral Associates, PC in Albuquerque, NM which “provides neuropsychological, legal,

Why is intervention, particularly early intervention, so important? The answer is brain plasticity, which is the brain's ability to change, reorganize, and even develop more efficient pathways for processing information. Research into the neurological bases of reading disorders, for example, has shown the educational and cognitive strategies can reroute brain networks and the brain can reorganize to overcome reading obstacles. Today's guest shares with us all about early intervention. Dr. Tania Abouezzeddine is a licensed Clinical Neuropsychologist and is also a faculty member at Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. In today's episode she explains why early intervention is key and how it results in positive changes in the brain. She not only shares why early intervention is important but how it impacts the development of the brain and the science behind it all.   Show Notes: [2:45] - It is important to understand why a child is struggling before deciding on the intervention. [3:31] - Any good intervention begins with an accurate diagnosis or assessment. [4:28] - What makes a good assessment? [5:52] - A lot of times, children are more likely to be labeled with behavior disorders. [6:55] - Tania shares research surrounding behavior disorders diagnosed to particular demographics that result in a negative trajectory. [9:09] - Tania describes some of the negative results of an inaccurate diagnosis or assessment. [10:18] - If an intervention has not begun by age 8, a child with a reading disorder will likely not bridge the gap in their reading. [11:48] - Reading disorders are hereditary. [14:03] - There is evidence that you can change the brain through good, consistent, and intense intervention. [15:19] - External interventions result in a positive change in the brain. [16:24] - The purpose of interventions is not to have a better reading score. [17:43] - Every brain is working at its own pace, but it will improve with intervention and depends on the severity of the disorder. [19:02] - There's a high percentage of children with more than one disorder. [20:17] - The child also needs to understand why an intervention is necessary. [21:59] - Tania works with high school graduates in college who have not been diagnosed and still cannot read independently. That window of time has been missed. [23:23] - Training the brain through early intervention can create new brain pathways that are similar to a child without a disorder over time. [24:46] - Sometimes parents are afraid to know and they avoid an assessment. [26:14] - Early intervention is also important because you can catch these problems before a child becomes jaded. [27:50] - The identification of strengths can help the intervention as well. [30:49] - Knowing strengths shows the child that their weaknesses don't define them. [32:19] - What happens when a child doesn't receive positive early intervention? [34:25] - We all have things we are not good at, but when it comes to reading and learning disorders they can have negative ramifications. [36:02] - Tania shares examples of students who choose majors or professions based on areas of weakness rather than their strengths. [38:41] - Students can also receive a charted plan to help with prioritizing.   About Our Guest: Dr. Abouezzeddine is a licensed Clinical Neuropsychologist (across the lifespan with a specialty in Pediatrics) and is a full-time faculty member at Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. #208 In this episode, I welcome back clinical neuropsychologist and founder of Biocognitive science, Dr. Mario Martinez. Mario is the author of the best-selling book "The MindBody Code'' and lectures worldwide on how cultural beliefs affect health and longevity more than genetics. His research demonstrates how thoughts and their biological expression co-emerge within a cultural history, even as current science continues to divide mind and body, and ignore the influence cultural contexts have on the process of health, illness, and aging. Mario has interviewed over 300 centenarians from around the world and who also live in 'Blue Zones'. People who are not only over 100 years old, but are mentally and physically healthy. Today we dive into what he learned from this and how our culture, people and environment affect our health and happiness long-term and what we can do to change it. Prepare to have your life changed. See you on the inside. About Mario: Dr Mario Martinez is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in how cultural beliefs affect the interaction of productivity, health and longevity. He is the founder of Biocognitive Science and the Empowerment Code. He developed an organizational model that views productivity and wellness as inseparable components of sustainable profits. The Empowerment Code is the first organizational training program that brings combined principles of cultural psychoneuroimmunology, cultural neuroscience and cultural anthropology to the workplace. Based on parameters that allow the immune system to make several hundred thousand decisions per minute, the Empowerment Code offers an organizational language that maximizes creativity, initiative and productivity, while diminishing conditions that contribute to chronic illnesses. Martinez holds a Masters degree in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University and a Doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Madrid. He also has post-doctoral training in psychopharmacology from Farleigh Dickinson University. Because of his work in how cultural beliefs affect the immune system, Martinez has investigated alleged cases of stigmata for the Catholic Church, the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery Channel. He lectures worldwide on his theory of Biocognition and teaches Empowerment Code principles to top US corporate executives and to global organizations in Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia Pacific.
