Episode Overview This episode dives deep into the evolving solar landscape—covering key state-level policy battles, rising resistance to distributed solar, the latest federal tax package in Congress, and the long term trends in the solar industry. Fox Swim, Senior Solar Industry Researcher at Aurora Solar, shares expertise on policy, utility rates, and resiliency-minded markets.   Key Themes & Highlights Aurora Solar & Fox's Expertise Aurora provides industry-leading solar design and sales software globally.   State-Level Anti-Solar Trends Utilities favor centralized generation, clashing with distributed energy advocates.   California's AB 942 aims to end grandfathered NEM/NEM 2 contracts when homes are sold, pushing owners into less favorable NEM 3 tariffs—effectively breaking existing contracts.   Resiliency & Distributed Generation Extreme weather, aging grid infrastructure, and power instability are driving demand for solar + storage. Distributed generation is seen as a smarter, faster, and more resilient solution than central utility models. Virtual battery programs in states like Connecticut are emerging as positive examples.   Federal Tax Bill & IRA Disruptions The recent House tax bill introduces critical threats:   Elimination of IRA incentives (including ITC, storage, and battery credits). “Fiat” sourcing restrictions targeting Chinese-manufactured solar components, potentially nullifying battery and panel subsidies. Fox warns of an unplanned “solar winter” where many small players may fold, though core demand won't vanish. Emphasis is shifting toward resilience and independence—not just ROI.   2025 Aurora Solar Snapshot Insights (Backed by Aurora's data on ~12.5 million projects, surveys of 1,000+ homeowners, 1,000 professionals, and 500+ businesses) Resilience over ROI: 76% of homeowners view solar as a good investment (up from 43% in 2023)  Financing shifts: Third‑party ownership (leases/PPAs) are growing; battery demand surges with 78% installers seeing increased interest  Bipartisan appeal: Solar cuts across party lines—Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all value solar and IRA  Trust challenges: Installer mistrust doubled—44% of homeowners find trustworthy companies hard to identify  Motivations revealed: Top drivers: bill savings, energy independence, environmental impact (>50% cite environment as a top-3 reason)    Tactical Takeaways for Mavericks Strengthen Trust – Improve transparency and contract clarity; be proactive about ethical sales practices. Refocus Messaging – Highlight solar + storage for resilience and independence—especially in disaster-prone regions. Engage Politically – Contact local/state reps, especially around bills like North Carolina's ITC reinstatement. Diversify Revenue – Build resilience offerings or pivots like community solar and virtual battery programs. Advocacy & Data – Join efforts with industry groups (SEIA, ACORE), and use Aurora's regional data in policymaker discussions.   Quotes from the Interview “76% of homeowners now say solar is a smart investment—it used to be 43%!”   “Installer trust has tanked: 44% of homeowners find it hard to pick a dependable provider.”   “Solar isn't just about ROI anymore—it's energy independence and resilience.”   Benoy Thanjan Benoy Thanjan is the Founder and CEO of Reneu Energy and he is also an advisor for several solar startup companies.  He has extensive project origination, development, and financial experience in the renewable energy industry and in the environmental commodities market.   This includes initial site evaluation, permitting, financing, sourcing equipment, and negotiating the long-term energy and environmental commodities off-take agreements. With inequality rising, housing out of reach, and young Americans falling further behind, some argue the American Dream is dead. But NYU professor Scott Galloway has a different take: America hasn't fallen—it's adrift. Originally recorded in late 2022, this episode features a candid conversation about what's really hollowed out the middle class: generational wealth hoarding, runaway corporate consolidation, and a political system rigged for the rich. As billionaires push for yet another round of tax cuts and working families continue to struggle, Galloway's message is more relevant than ever: America can still right the ship—but only if we change course. Scott Galloway is a clinical professor of marketing at NYU's Stern School of Business, a bestselling author, and a tech entrepreneur. He's the host of the Prof G Show and co-host of Pivot. Galloway is a leading voice on the need to rein in corporate power and rebuild the middle class. This episode originally aired December 6, 2022.  Social Media: @profgalloway.com @profgalloway Further reading:  Adrift: America in 100 Charts Website: http://pitchforkeconomics.com Instagram: @pitchforkeconomics Threads: pitchforkeconomics Bluesky: @pitchforkeconomics.bsky.social Twitter: @PitchforkEcon, @NickHanauer, @civicaction YouTube: @pitchforkeconomics LinkedIn: Pitchfork Economics Substack: The Pitch

“We have overprotected kids in the real world and underprotected them online.” Jonathan Haidt believes we have bubble-wrapped childhood: cut back on recess, banned kids from walking to school alone, and filled every spare moment with structured, adult-led activities. But at the same time, we gave kids 24/7 access to social media, smartphones, and one-to-one devices—with very little guidance or boundaries. And now, we're seeing the results. Rising anxiety. Fragmented attention. Lost confidence. Social disconnection. This quote about overprotecting in the real world and underprotecting onloine hit me hard, because it puts into words what so many teachers have felt for years but couldn't always articulate. If our kids seem less resilient, less focused, less ready to learn... maybe it's not them. Maybe it's the environment we've created. The good news? We can change that. We ARE changing it. More schools are rethinking tech. More parents are drawing tech boundaries. More teachers are advocating for what kids truly need. We can bring balance back. Today's guest is Jonathan Haidt—a social psychologist, professor at NYU's Stern School of Business, and author of several influential books, including most recently, The Anxious Generation. You may have seen Jonathan in recent interviews talking about how smartphones and social media are impacting kids' mental health. But I wanted to bring him on the show to go deeper—specifically from an educator's point of view. This conversation builds on some of the past episodes I've done around screen time, attention spans, and how tech is changing the way kids show up in the classroom. It's a true back-and-forth conversation where we learn from each other, and I think it's going to validate so much of what you've already sensed as a teacher.  Get the shareable article/transcript for this episode here. Later this summer, I'll share a different perspective from someone who sees personalized AI tutoring as the future of school, and I have to admit, I find that vision just as compelling as what Haidt has shared. Stay tuned!

Increasing levels of depression and anxiety have been recorded in young people since around 2011. The novel ‘The Anxious Generation' makes the case that young people today are suffering because a play-based childhood has been replaced by a phone-based childhood. Its author, Social Psychologist Jonathan Haidt from New York University's Stern School of Business talks to Heather du Plessis-Allan about the issue. There are four Democratic candidates for two open seats on the Philipstown Town Board - Ben Cheah, John Maasik, Nat Prentice and Ned Rauch. They will compete in a primary on June 24 for the two Democratic lines on the general-election ballot in November. Cheah and Rauch, who were endorsed by the Philipstown Democratic Committee, also filed independent nominating petitions and will appear on the November ballot on the Philipstown Focus party line regardless of the primary outcome. There are no candidates from other parties. We asked each candidate to answer four questions in a total of 500 words or less. The responses are below, presented in alphabetical order by last name. For information on voting and a link to reader endorsements, see below. What in your background makes you the best candidate? Ben Cheah: I believe that a great board member brings passion, dedication, teamwork and expertise - and I'll bring all of that to the Philipstown board. Ten years ago, my wife Megan and I chose to raise our two sons in Philipstown. We love this community and feel lucky to call it home. Both of us have always been active volunteers. I've served on the Philipstown Recreation Commission, Cold Spring Planning Board (current), as Cub Scouts Pack 137 treasurer and on the Putnam County Industrial Development Agency board. Running for Town Board feels like a natural next step - one I'm genuinely passionate about. I'm especially focused on the challenges of rising costs and tightening budgets. I plan to be hands-on with budgeting and long-term planning to help keep costs and taxes under control. I bring to the table an MBA in finance from New York University's Stern School of Business; 25 years of project management and executive experience in the film and TV industry; and a strong creative background in sound design for film, with credits on Men in Black, The Big Lebowski, The Birdcage and The Wire. John Maasik: I've lived in Philipstown for over 20 years: 10 in Cold Spring and 10 in Garrison, where my wife and I raised our two sons. I've spent thousands upon thousands of hours volunteering with community-based organizations, including the Philipstown Recreation Commission, Philipstown Soccer Club, Friends of Philipstown Recreation and Scouting America, in addition to participating in the Haldane turf field effort and the Garrison School Safety Committee. I also helped launch events such as the Castle-to-River Run and Winter Carnival, raising thousands in non-taxpayer dollars and donations for town programs. These efforts have helped me build strong relationships across Cold Spring, Continental Village, Garrison and Nelsonville. Professionally, I've led large teams and managed multimillion-dollar budgets in the private sector, experiences that have shaped my ability to listen carefully, act with integrity and lead without ego. The values that guide me most deeply come from my family's story. My parents were Estonian refugees who fled Soviet occupation after my grandfather was killed by the Russians. My grandmother brought her three children to the U.S. in search of safety, freedom and a new beginning. I was raised with a deep respect for civic responsibility, community and the promise of American democracy. Nat Prentice: Experience, experience, experience. I have had a career in finance and investments. I grew up in Garrison and moved back here 25 years ago. Since moving back, I have attended most of the Town Board's monthly meetings, so I know the commitment that is required to address Philipstown's challenges and opportunities. I helped create the Town's 2007 Comprehensive Plan, and in 2018 I was appointed chair of the Comprehensive Plan Committee that published an update adopted in 2021. Working on the plan meant partnering with a multitude of people from the North Highlands to Continental Village. I know the town's goals and priorities really well. In addition, I work with emergency services (commissioner, Garrison Fire District; me...

Unlocking Energy Storage Value: PJM Market Reforms with Brattle Group's Serena Patel Episode Overview: In this special live episode of the Solar Maverick Podcast, recorded at the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Solar & Storage Industries Association (“MSSIA”) Solar & Storage Insight Conference in New Brunswick, NJ, host Benoy Thanjan sits down with Serena Patel, Energy Research Associate at The Brattle Group, to unpack critical energy storage market reforms in the PJM interconnection. The conversation focuses on a groundbreaking report from Brattle, commissioned by the American Clean Power Association, that lays out a roadmap for unlocking the full value of energy storage across U.S. energy markets. Key Topics Covered: Why PJM's current market design undervalues flexible storage resources The two most urgent market reforms: ▪ Opportunity cost bidding for energy storage ▪ Creation of new ancillary service and ramping reserve products How suppressed price signals hinder storage operators' revenue Lessons from other RTOs like CAISO and NYISO that PJM can implement now The case for all-source procurement in local reliability planning The critical role of stakeholder engagement and policy advocacy to push reforms forward Featured Report: Energy Storage Market Design Reforms: A Roadmap to Unlock the Potential of Energy Storage By: Brattle Group for the American Clean Power Association Released: April 2025 https://www.brattle.com/insights-events/publications/brattle-experts-prepared-an-energy-storage-market-reform-roadmap-for-several-us-electricity-markets/ Notable Quotes: “Our current systems were built for legacy fossil fuel generators. If we don't reform the markets now, we risk undervaluing the flexibility that storage offers.” – Serena Patel “Opportunity cost bidding would help storage developers maximize revenue by bidding strategically, rather than being constrained by outdated market rules.” – Serena Patel   Takeaway for Developers & Policymakers: To accelerate storage deployment, developers must actively engage in PJM stakeholder processes and advocate for reforms that enable revenue stacking and flexibility compensation. The Brattle report offers actionable insights to guide that involvement.   Thanks to MSSIA: Special thanks to the MiSSIA for hosting the Solar Maverick Podcast at their first annual conference and for their continued solar and storage advocacy in NJ, PA, and DE.   Benoy Thanjan Benoy Thanjan is the Founder and CEO of Reneu Energy and he is also an advisor for several solar startup companies.  He has extensive project origination, development, and financial experience in the renewable energy industry and in the environmental commodities market.   This includes initial site evaluation, permitting, financing, sourcing equipment, and negotiating the long-term energy and environmental commodities off-take agreements. Kids spend hours a day on their phones scrolling through social media. Many have debated whether all this social media use is bad for mental health, but there's a more basic question that needs to be asked: Does all this social media use promote healthy development?Does it help kids develop into well-formed adults? Does it help kids become resilient to the challenges they will face in their lives? And does it help kids learn how to interact constructively with their peers? On this episode of The Report Card, Nat Malkus discusses these questions and more with Jonathan Haidt. Nat and Jon discuss the importance of imaginative and unstructured play; why parents are so restrictive when it comes to what their children can do in the real world yet so permissive when it comes to what they can do online; what the ideal playground looks like; why a little danger in play is important; whether technology use can explain recent test score trends; whether the social feedback kids get online helps them mature; and what parents and schools can do to push back against the encroachment of technology into kids' lives.Jonathan Haidt is the Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University's Stern School of Business and the author of The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.Show Notes:After BabelLet Grow

I'm also passionate about helping solar installers with their tech stack, growth strategy, management and leadership direction, and exit plans. My results: → Spent nearly 10 years at the U.S. Department of Energy // Obama White House helping to catalyze the modern cleantech industry → Built and scaled Ipsun Solar 0-$12M in revenue → Grew a team of over 60 in service of the mission of installing residential and commercial rooftop solar → Started Sunvoy to help solar installers worldwide scale their businesses → In April 2024 exited solar construction business to help other solar business owners with Sunvoy → During the last 16 months I've helped more than 50 solar businesses throughout North and South America and Europe to build their brand equity and grow referrals with Sunvoy When I coach solar business owners, I teach them how to build efficient, profitable revenue growth, how to go to market the new way, a relentless focus on the customer, team, speed, execution, brand & culture. Today, we tackle some big-picture questions about the role of business in society when it comes to protecting human rights and democracy. And of course, this is very topical. I am honour to welcome Michael Posner to the show. Michael is the director of the Centre for Business and Human Rights at New York University's Stern School of Business. He is a human rights lawyer, and he was Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour under the Obama administration. He is the author of a new book, Conscience Incorporated: Pursue Profits While Protecting Human Rights, which, given the state of things in the world and the United States, is pretty timely and important. Michael covers a ton of ground here, from the primacy of shareholder capitalism, how to make decisions in a world comprised of competing expectations and trade-offs, the tensions associated with decisions around human rights and environmental concerns, when CEOs should speak up, and his thoughts on the Trump administration and what's happening with regard to the United States' role in the world and to democracy and human rights. Michael Posner, Conscience Incorporated: The Role of Business and Investment in Protecting Human Rights

Capital for Good

In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with Michael Posner, the Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics and Finance at NYU's Stern School of Business, director of the school's Center for Business and Human Rights, a long-time leader in the field, luminary thinker, advocate, former State Department Official, and the author of the new book, Conscience Incorporated. We begin with Posner's early interests in international human rights issues, sparked in law school when he was tasked with investigating atrocities in Uganda under Idi Amin. He lays out the principals of early, post-World War II and UN inspired human rights law focused on universality, and the responsibility of governments to promote, protect and enforce human rights. Notably absent from this early framework is the role of business. Posner explains that his interest in the intersection of human rights took shape when he began to observe that large multinational corporations had a critical role to play, particularly when they operated in weak states that lacked the ability to protect human rights. We discuss why companies should care, fundamentally, about human rights on ethical dimensions (“outsourcing might be a smart business strategy, but you can't outsource responsibility if you're the main economic beneficiary,”) and because there are material costs that can arise from irresponsible practices, often reputational crises and/or regulation. We explore the deficiencies of various business frameworks: how and why Milton Friedman's shareholder primacy worldview fails to account for environmental and social externalities and a broader set of stakeholders; how and why ESG conflate environmental and social considerations and emphasize risk rather than meaningful performance on issues like climate change or worker protections. Posner suggests that this moment of backlash against all things ESG, DEI and “woke capitalism” offers us an opportunity to do better. We touch on sometimes complex tensions between climate change and human rights concerns, acknowledging that climate change can only be solved if we transition to a lower carbon economy, with the scale up of renewable energy and the development of technologies like electric vehicles, which in turn rely on things like batteries. We know that today batteries are reliant on inputs like critical minerals, long mined in ways and places rife with human rights challenges, and today often controlled by Chinese companies. China is also the world's largest and lowest cost producer of solar panels, and much of that production occurs in Xinjiang, with forced labor of the Uyghur ethnic minority. Posner discusses a number of ways to better integrate climate and human rights considerations. Before opening the floor to audience questions, we discuss the evolution of technology and human rights issues. When Posner was at the State Department from 2010 to 2012, he had a front tow seat to the Arab Spring and the “Facebook Revolution,” witnessing how activists used social media to fight authoritarianism. Although he says he still believes in the power of technology to open up political discourse, he has become much more concerned about issues of data privacy, surveillance, harmful violent and incendiary content, information and disinformation, and ways in which companies try to shield themselves with first amendment (to which they are not legally subject) to avoid more vigorous content moderation or human rights engagement. We conclude with the role of corporate leaders when it comes to human rights. While Posner notes he is typically conservative about how much executives should speak out on specific issues, he believes strongly that “business leaders need to be attentive and active if there are fundamental threats to our democracy.” This episode of Capital for Good was recorded as part of Social Impact Week 2025, a week of social impact-related events for the Columbia Business School community, organized by the Social Enterprise Club, Green Business Club, Community Impact Club, and LEO Impact Fund. We are all born, become toddlers, teenagers, adults, mid-aged, late middle aged, and eventually die. Do company's follow this same pattern? If so, can we use that pattern to better predict what they will do and compare that to what they should do at different stages of their life cycles? My guest for this episode is Aswath Damodaran. Aswath is a Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University (Kerschner Family Chair in Finance Education). Aswath is a super star professor, considered both in and out of academia as the ‘Dean of Valuation', and one of the best teachers I have ever had the privilege of working with together. We have been lucky to have him teaching on the TRIUM EMBA for the last 23 years! In this episode we discuss his latest book, The Corporate Life Cycle: Business, investment, and Management Implications. The work is an attempt to provide a unified theory of all of finance (with a bit of strategy, management and leadership). With clear, compelling and concise writing, Aswath views all of corporate finance, valuation, investment philosophy and management/leadership through the construct of the birth, aging and dying of firms. The scope and scale is vast, and in a less gifted writer, it would risk being reductionist and overly simplistic – the opposite of what we have here. I wish I would have read this book 20 years ago because it would have saved me a lot of time and effort! In this conversation we cover the basics of the corporate life cycle and some of its implications. We get into a lively discussion about whether companies should strive to be ‘sustainable', explore the leadership characteristic needed at different stages of a company's life cycle, and outline the reasons why renewal and rebirth for company's near the end of their life cycle is so difficult. It is conversations with the likes of Aswath which make me feel so lucky to do what I do! Aswath Damodaran is a Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University,  where he teaches corporate finance and equity valuation. He is known in the investment industry and academia as the Dean of Equity Valuation. Aswath is the author of several widely used academic and practitioner texts on valuation, corporate finance, and investment management, and he maintains a comprehensive database for valuation purposes that can be found on his website.   During this podcast, we will discuss his teaching career, investment philosophy, the equity risk premium in the US and international stocks, index funds, factor investing, and how artificial intelligence is changing the field of finance and changing us.     The Bogleheads on Investing podcast is hosted by Rick Ferri, CFA, a long-time Boglehead and investment adviser. The Bogleheads are a group of like-minded individual investors who follow the general investment and business beliefs of John C. Bogle, founder and former CEO of the Vanguard Group. It is a conflict-free community where individual investors reach out and provide education, assistance, and relevant information to other investors of all experience levels at no cost. The organization supports a free forum at Bogleheads.org, and the wiki site is Bogleheads® wiki.    Since 2000, the Bogleheads' have held national conferences in major cities nationwide. There are also many Local Chapters in the US and even a few Foreign Chapters that meet regularly. New Chapters are being added regularly. All Bogleheads activities are coordinated by volunteers who contribute their time and talent.     This podcast is supported by the John C. Bogle Center for Financial Literacy, a non-profit organization approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity on February 6, 2012. Your tax-deductible donation to the Bogle Center is appreciated.
