He was released after a little more than a year, due either to the pleading of his mother or some kind of bribery, you be the judge. But anyway, you know it's not gonna end well. At 15 years old, Jesse Pomeroy was at the time the youngest person to be convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to die. December 9th: Jesse Pomeroy's Trial Begins (1874) What makes a murderer? It's a question asked time and time again and, no matter what story we tell, there always seems to be a different answer. On December 9th 1874 a trial began for a young man who had already claimed the life of two individuals. Someone who, even decades later, many struggle to understand how and why he became a serial killer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Pomeroy, https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/jesse-pomeroy, https://murderpedia.org/male.P/p/pomeroy-jesse.htm, https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-story-of-jesse-pomeroy-14-year-old-serial-killer/, https://allthatsinteresting.com/jesse-pomeroy Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Faith is taking us back to the 1800's to tell the story of Jesse Pomeroy who preyed on the young boys in Chelsea Mass. Hanna covers the case of Massachusetts's youngest ever convicted murderer, Jesse Pomeroy. Intro music is from "Across the Line" by The Wellington Sea Shanty Society.
I've been fascinated with the story of Jesse Pomeroy in 1870s Boston. He's the boy who murdered kids for quite a while before he was caught. What does this story tell us about crime today? During the 1870's, children between the ages of three and nine were being tortured and murdered in the outskirts of Boston, MA. Between 1871 and 1872, a total of seven young boys were lured by money or candy before being taking off to isolalated areas, only to be physically assaulted, tortured, or worse. Several witnesses came forward to tell authorities of a young child with distinguishing features seen fleeing the scene of where he left some of his victims. It didn't take long for authorities to catch up to 12-year old Jesse Pomeroy, a loner who could not explain why he did what he did. After doing time in juvinile hall, Jesse was released on good behaviour. This demeanor did not last long, because once released, Jesse's violence escalated, and he went on to kill not once, but twice before being caught. This time, he went on trial, and spent the next 40 years in solitary confinement. It wasn't until Jesse was in his 50s that he was released into the general prison population, where he lived out his life before dying of a heart attack at age 74.Dying to be Found and Dying to be Found: The DASH are now part of Sound Slice Audio Productions! In this bonus, we do something a bit different. We walk through two different cases, one of nature and one of nurture when it comes to kids who kill. Jesse Pomeroy is the United States youngest serial killer, at only 11-years-old. Jasmine Richardson brutally murdered her entire family at only 12-years-old after being groomed by her 23-year-old boyfriend. Two very different circumstances, but both children who committed multiple murders. The historical mini today has us looking at the disturbing life and crimes of Jesse Pomeroy, known as America's youngest serial killer. Listener digression advised throughout, however. What he had to endure as a child, and even more so what he inflicted on other children is not for the faint of heart. Truly depraved. Wow, we made it to episode 10! To capture this awesome milestone join me as I tell Emily all about Boston's boy torturer and killer, Jesse Pomeroy. Jesse's rein of terror took place in the 1870s, so I am taking you way back. Emily also shares with me a mocktail she found on TikTok (@themindfulmocktail) called a Simple Sunrise Mocktail. It is a super simple AF version of the classic tequila sunrise - just swap out the tequila with your zero proof tequila of choice. Ritual makes a pretty good tequila alternative, and there are several others out there on the market now including Spiritless, Free Spirits, and Sobrii. I have not personally tried these so cannot vouch for their flavor palette, but they are on my list to try :-) Shoutout to Always Talking Crime podcast hosted by Kimi Thompson! Check out her trailer at the beginning of the episode, and you can find her on Spotify and Podbean, and everywhere you get your podcasts. She is also all over social media and can be found in Instagram and Facebook. We begin part 2 with Jesse being released from the reformatory. You'd think he would've been somewhat reformed when he was released, but he wasn't. You thought part 1 was rough? Jesse was just getting started.
In 1872, Jesse Pomeroy was arrested for the mutilation and torture of young boys. He was described by newspapers as "A Youthful Monster" and "A Young Villain". What about this case makes you want to grab your "oh shit handle"? Jesse was 12!

Mel and Jamie share a mutual fascination with children who kill. As self proclaimed "armchair psychologists" nothing is more intriguing than trying to figure out when a human becomes a murderer and why. It is so easy for us to look at serial killers with disgust but when they come in kid size you can't help but try to find someway to excuse their behaviour. In the case of Jesse Pomeroy it was very difficult. Listen in and let us know what your thoughts are on children who kill. Do you believe they can be reformed? Are they a product of their environment? Are they a case of nature or nurture or maybe both? Hit up our socials or shoot us an email with your thoughts.
