Coach Garrish shares what it means to train with intention, how he connects with student-athletes on a deeper level, and why real impact goes far beyond wins and stats. This episode is a masterclass in passion, purpose, and performance from one of the best in the game.
This week on the Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob is joined by three amazing guests, all with incredible amounts of experience developing speed with youth athletes. Alan Murdoch, John Garrish and Micheál Cahill kick off this episode with one of the key questions and one that is talked about a lot, what are the differences when training speed with youth athletes versus adult athletes. Should we be as strict with our technical models? Do we even need technical models? Alan shares his experiences with us and gives us a great place to kick off this conversation. We look into the tips and tricks to coach these key positions so you can implement the information tomorrow with your athletes. Another common scenario working with all athletes but especially youth athletes is that they are normally coming to us in large groups. But how do we maximise their time and get the biggest learning and training effect that we can? John shares exactly how he does this with his students at North Broward Preparatory School. In the second half of the episode we dive into the weeds and discuss the exact drills to use with youth athletes. What has worked for these three guys and maybe more importantly, what hasn't. Micheál dives deep into the world of resisted speed training, explaining how they can used as a teaching and coaching tool as well as a training tool. We finish off this conversation with some questions that we put to these three guys on social media. If you're working with youth athletes and want to maximise your time and their energy, check out this episode with Alan Murdoch, John Garrish and Micheál Cahill. Main talking points: What the key differences are when training youth athletes speed How to coach speed with large groups Tips and tricks to coach the key sprint positions Key drills to use with young athletes Using resisted speed training for teaching and coaching How to introduce games to speed training with youth athletes
The Podcast is BACK! In episode 1 of season 4 I had the fortune of being able to sit down and chop it up with North Broward Prep's Director of Athletic Development and Head Track and Field Coach, John Garrish. Throughout the 45-minute discussion, John and I get into: 1) Even though his path has changed through his career, how his love in training has still been a driving force behind his decisions.2) How the idea of “Shiny Object Syndrome” impact coaches3) The role of identifying value in toys, tools, or tech, and where the research can impact progress either way.4) Wickets, their value, where they can be helpful, and what you could do if you don't have access to them, or a group too large to implement them.5) Building progressions while keeping what's “best available for the group” in mind6) Utilizing constraints to correct technical issues in sprinting, and what he's looking at to identify what need to be improved.7) Where the weight room connects with speed training, including where its priority sits throughout the year and how that changes.8) His entire weekly plan in “the perfect world” I'm truly grateful for John being so open to sharing all of this with us today. Understanding how some of the best practitioners provide feedback and put athlete's in situations to improve technique is so valuable, so I can't thank him enough for sharing so many aspects of, not just his progressions, but what he's identifying and correcting. His Instagram full of awesome content, including great “stories” giving great examples of his athletes in action, so give him a follow at: @coach_garrish. Lastly, if you find value in the show please feel free to share this episode with a collogue that you feel would enjoy it, and please don't forget to subscribe and give us a 5-star review on your favorite podcast player. I truly do appreciate it. Who is John Garrish? Coach John Garrish has served the North Broward Prep community for nine years as the school's Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, five as its Head Track and Field Coach and three as a Middle School Faculty member. A native of South Florida, John attended Wagner College (B.S., Psychology '12) and the University of North Texas (M.S., Kinesiology '14) before serving as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at Rutgers University and finally joining the North Broward Prep family in 2014. Most recently, John served temporarily on the FAU Football Strength Staff during the summer of 2020. John is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has served on the Board of Directors for the National High School Strength Coaches' Association as the Southeast Regional Director (2016-2020) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association's High School Special Interest Group Executive Council (2015-2016).
Today's podcast features sports performance coaches Rich Burnett and John Garrish. Rich Burnett is the President and Director of Athletic Development for Triple F Elite Sports Training in Knoxville, TN. He is also the Co-Founder and CEO of Athletic Assessment Technology, known more commonly as Plyomat, and has over 10 years of experience working in high school, and NCAA DI strength and conditioning. John Garrish is the Director of Athletic Development & Performance at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida, and the school's Head Track and Field Coach. John was voted the 2022 National High School Strength Coach of the Year by the NHSSCA and has been a two-time guest previously on this podcast, speaking on a variety of plyometric and speed training topics. The standing vertical jump, or “countermovement” test is a very popular method of assessment for athletes and has been for some time. What the standing vertical leap test doesn't tell you, is how fast an athlete gets off the ground, which is generally what matters in sport, more so than how high an athlete can reach. Reactivity is also a general coordination ability where athletes can both anticipate the ground and coordinate the proper muscle activation sequences to rebound themselves back into the air, which is critical for a variety of athletic jumping, throwing, cutting, and overall movement tasks. On today's show, Rich and John will get into how they train reactive ability in plyometrics, with respect to ground contact times, and the function of power that being able to get off the ground quickly provides. We also discuss the differences between double and single-leg reactive strength tests and measurements, and how they correlate to athleticism, as well as the differences between simple plyometric movements based on contact time, versus more complex and coordinated movements, such as skips and gallops. Timestamps and Main Points 4:39 – What “Reactive Strength” is, and how Rich and John use it in the scope of their training programs. 18:32 – Comparing Double vs. Single-leg reactive strength measurements, and how single-leg RSI is a “gold standard” of explosive athletic ability. 35:00 – How Rich and John go about coaching or referencing ground contact times in plyometric exercises. 48:56 – Links between bilateral reactive strength scores, trap bar deadlift ability, and core strength. 58:07 – Thoughts on more “compressed” and simple, intense plyometrics, relative to more long, rhythmic, and coordinated plyometric-type movements. Rich Burnett and John Garrish Quotes “RSI provided a lot of value to the sprinters, triple jumpers, and athletes that had a high level of success at the state level, go figure, had the highest RSI values” Garrish “Just because a kid is good at the bilateral (RSI), doesn't mean they are good at the single leg (RSI) and vice versa. One of our best pogo kids on the 5 hop is not good at the single leg one” Burnett “I have for sure noticed with the single leg RSI hop (single leg forward, onto one leg on the mat, land on two feet),
Today's episode features strength and track coach, John Garrish. John is the director of athletic development at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida, and the school's head track coach. John was recently voted the 2022 National High School Strength Coach of the Year by the National High School Strength Coach's Association. John appeared previously on the show discussing his speed training approach in episode 182. The symbiosis of track and football is often discussed in the process of training, and importantly so. What is talked about less, are some of the specifics of what track has to offer, not just in the sprints, but also in events like triple jump, that can enhance an athletes speed, power, elasticity and overall movement profile, in their other sports. John was a hammer thrower in his college years, as well as a former football player. The hammer throw is, of all the throws, the one that requires the greatest symbiosis and harmony with the implement. The triple jump (bounding) requires a tremendous symbiosis with the ground, and how one interacts with it. You can easily see John's experience and intuition of track and S&C concepts emerge in his progression of bound, skip, hop and overall elastic training with his athletes. On the show today, John covers thoughts on hand position and “elastic/rigidity” vs. “muscular” sprint strategies in athletes as they move from youth to high-school levels. This sets the stage for his talk on his galloping, skipping and bounding progressions, and how he keeps movement quality and velocity at the core of the progression. John talks about how he keeps the training fun and intentional, and how he changes emphasis as athletes move from middle school, to high school years. This show is a beautiful fusion of team sport S&C, and track and field concepts, and can be used to help any athlete develop more fluid, dynamic power outputs on the field of play. Today's episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, Lost Empire Herbs, and the Elastic Essentials online course. For 15% off your Lost Empire Herbs order, head to lostempireherbs.com/justfly. Timestamps and Main Points: 3:50 – What a typical workout looks like for John, and how he does bounds, skips and gallops himself to be a better coach in those movements 8:29 – Thoughts on hand-position in young athletes vs. older athletes, the use of rigid, splayed fingers, and how that rigid-open-hand strategy might change, as athletes get older 28:36 – How John evolved skips and gallops from elementary school, into their middle and high school years 37:21 – John's take on more traditional extensive hops, in light of his use of skips, gallops and hops 44:37 – Different constraints and emphasis of skips and bounds are that John utilizes in his scholastic and open-large group training sessions 54:07 – How to give athletes balance in their skip and gallop profile without diminishing their “superpower” 1:00:59 – John's thoughts on when to get bounding in the mix for athletes, and how to progress it 1:15:17 – Using backwards single leg hops for athletes, its benefits, and potential link to being able to bound forward for distance “I felt that unless I at least had the comfort of the ability to demonstrate, or perform these movements (bounds, gallops, skips) myself, then I felt there was no way I could verbalize it to my athletes; or find lesser cues, or a tactile cue to get the athlete to feel it as well” “Some of the fastest girls I've seen at track meets do display that splayed hand position (when sprinting)… but as they progress in middle school you see less dominance of that hand position”
This week's guest on the Pacey Performance Podcast is National High School Strength Coach of the Year, John Garrish. He's the Director of Athletic Development & Performance and Head Track and Field Coach at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida. Following the receipt of his prestigious award from the NHSSCA, John is here to talk about coaching younger athletes at high school level, how he first broke into the industry, and some of his own tricks and tips for coaching speed with larger groups. First up, he explains how life works as a high school S&C coach, and how strength and conditioning fits in with the school curriculum in Florida. He moves on to his own strengths and weaknesses as a coach, and discusses how he overcomes any perceived flaws in his technique. On the same subject, John tells us how he coaches training sessions using minimal verbal communication, an area where many coaches may struggle to get instructions and messages across. This involves how to manage larger groups of athletes, as is the case for many high school coaches. John also gives us his expert insight into the drills and exercises he likes to use in larger groups, including the progressions and regressions to look out for when using banding and hopping. For all this and much more from an award-winning coach, hit the play button now. This week's topics: How John became Head Track and Field coach at North Broward How strength and conditioning coaching fits in with a school curriculum Key differences in coaching adults and youth athletes John's own strengths and weaknesses as a coach, and how he addresses them How to coach with minimal verbal communication but using constraints Tips and tricks for managing a large group of athletes Exercises and drills to use when coaching large groups Progressions and regressions when using banding and hopping

On episode 6 of the podcast I sit down to talk athletic development with John Garrish of North Broward Preparatory school located in Coconut Creek, Florida. John is the head track and field coach at the school, he is also the head of athletic development. We discuss his creation and involvement in Speed school, a free athletic and speed development session he runs with youth from surrounding neighborhoods. We discuss his view on speed development as well as the methods that he employs to advance athletes. Within the discussion there is a natural tendency to lean towards the concept of motor learning and allowing for athletes to find methods that deliver the best results. I found this really refreshing as often times we see ourselves coaching towards one method, rather then employing constraints to allow for athletes to develop the most economical and meaningful manner of progression. We discuss the methods of autoregulation and individualization he utilizes to best serve his athletes. We discuss how and why he utilizes throws to advance athletes and give them appropriate stimulus. We also talk about how he had a philosophical shift in not letting today ruin tomorrow that is really applicable when looking at the grand scheme of things. Overall this podcast provides a wide variety of useful information that coaches can take and access on a variety of topics directly related to athletic development. To keep up with Coach Garrish's content you can follow him on both Instagram and twitter.
John Garrish is the head Strength and Conditioning Coach and head track and field coach for North Broward Prep in South Florida and he hopped on the pod today to talk about high school strength and conditioning and how far it has come since he joined its ranks 7 years ago. What blew me away was John's dedication to his athletes and desire to provide an environment that fosters excellence in his kids regardless of athletic talent. We talked at length about his approach towards working with a wide range of kids and assembling a solid coaching staff that is equally committed to development of the whole person. John also breaks down what has changed for him since Covid-19 in terms of scheduling and providing a safe experience for his athletes. He breaks down how his schedule works and how he took over the track team several years ago and then we discuss his most recent initiative: free Saturday speed sessions for anyone in the North Florida community. John's passion for helping people was really special to hear about. He is truly a selfless person and it certainly left me thinking of ways I can better serve those around me. Thanks to him for hopping on and hope you enjoy our conversation John also writes for Teambuildr and can be found on Instagram @coach_garrish and on twitter @John_Garrish

He also serves as the National High School Strength Coaches Association Regional Board Member for the Southeast. John is a passionate, creative and detail oriented coach, who distributes his methods freely through his social media outlets. At North Broward prep, John has the challenges of teaching speed and athletic movement to large groups of athletes at a time. In doing so, he has implemented a variety of unique mini-hurdle variations with arm position, as well as hand and finger positioning, these each having unique impacts on the athletes. John is a tremendous compiler of data and sprint images, and it was a joy to pick his brain on his speed training implementation and discoveries. On the show today, John covers his management of the weight room as North Broward and how he manages large groups of athletes with a small support staff. He describes his use of gallops and various skips as an important part of his warm-up process, and then gets into all of the mini-hurdle speed constraints in his program, which is a true highlight. This was a fantastic episode on speed training for not just the high school athlete, but any athlete seeking improved speed and explosive ability. Rotation is big. And then also drills that help us focus on better front-side action (but realizing what’s happening within context with the ground.” “One of the things I was seeing (running fly sprints with a stick overhead) is I was seeing an over-correction and an excessive arch in the spine, and it might look good in a kinogram, but it wasn’t what our students need was” “If we use constraints, (we) still use rotation, they’ve never over-corrected with too much rotation” “I started toying with different hand positions with pulsers or weights (during fly sprints), I don’t think that’s a thing we looked at much during the first three years” “Normal grip with the pulsers, or anything in the hands, with acceleration that was really forceful, but when we got to upright running, it wasn’t how I wanted it to be” “What you saw the hand starting to do, you saw the foot starting to do as well… and some student...

I am a former college and high school strength coach. I created this podcast for strength coaches at any level but more specifically for High School Strength Coaches. I want strength coaches to be able to connect to each other and learn more about the growing field of full time high school strength coaching. Thanks for checking out the website. It would be great to connect with other strength coaches and talk about what works and what doesn’t work when training high school athletes. This is why I created this podcast. I hope you find it useful and valuable!
