“How do I create a strength & conditioning program for athletes?” It's not as difficult as most physical therapists think.  The best place to start is with a comprehensive intake and performance analysis. Once you determined the athlete's needs, you create a monthly or quarterly program with corresponding parameters and exercises that address the desired neuromuscular stimulus.  In this episode, I share the mistakes I've made and the overall framework to help sports PTs design a strength and conditioning program with ease. If you're a sports PT and want to gain more experience with program design for athletes, you need to tune into this episode. Since then Frank has been working in the privatized field of sports performance helping develop programs for athletes of all ages. In this episode we discuss where to start when developing a strength and conditioning program of your own. What are the fundamentals? How often should we be active? When should we start? In his position, Frank also provides his perspective on the state of youth sports today. Are our young athletes being pushed too hard? Are they training too early and too hard? What pressures are they currently facing? With many young people being told to get bigger, lose weight, get stronger, get faster, etc it is important that we manage these pressures to assure we all achieve our goals the right way. Unknown Speaker 0:01 What if I told you that all combat sports are based on the same biological principles, and most people are preparing for them the wrong way. Unknown Speaker 0:20 I'm actually going to lay out for you, the science and the training that will help you achieve the best results. Whether you're talking about boxing, or grappling, or some kind of mixed combat, even contact point sparring. It's all based on the same biological processes within the human body. I'm going to show you and then I'm going to tell you how you can make your training more appropriate regardless of what discipline you train, and what combat or competition you're involved in. It doesn't matter whether you're talking about boxing or mixed martial arts. Judo jujitsu, karate Taekwondo, point sparring, full contact, Olympic. It's all roughly the same. When you look at it from a physiology perspective, the same biological processes exist for all of us. And I'll prove it to you. Take a look at any fight any combat, whether it's staged or real, whether it's in a competition or on the street, you will see a lot of buildup and a lot of fade out followed by these very small increments of flurries. Those flurries are generally 10 seconds or less. As we get to higher levels, we start to see them sometimes push a little bit beyond that. But it doesn't matter what you're looking at. It's all roughly the short flurries followed by sustained moderate intensity Why? Because of the way the body processes energy. Take a look at Take a look at anything that we do athletically, we cannot maintain the highest intensity training or output for more than about 10 seconds. And this is rooted in science. If you take a look at strategies, they don't account for this, if you take a look at training, it doesn't account for this. Very few people in the world in any athletic pursuit, are utilizing the understanding of these scientific principles to perform their best and get a leg up on their competition. Here at whistle kick, we've developed a program that not only does that but it does it from a perspective that is realistic and rooted in scientific fact, much of the time, individuals are training for their competitions or their testings, or anything that requires this high intensity output. Wrong, just plain wrong and I can prove it to you Have you ever prepared for a competition or a some kind of intense event where you've gone out and run eight 910 minute miles for hours, you build up that moderate intensity base of cardiovascular fitness, and then you get into the ring. And it all falls apart. Because the moment you step up with that high intensity, your body can't handle it. Now, some people say, Oh, well, it's nerves. It's anxiety. It's not it's science. The body processes energy in different ways, depending on the intensity level. When you go out and you run or you bike or you do something at that moderate intensity, that is conditioning you to be better at moderate intensity output. High Intensity output, actually utilizes energy in the body completely differently. In order to perform in that way, you have to train in that way. So this is where high intensity interval training comes in. And this is why it's been so successful for so many people in combat sports. But there's a downside to that. If you do it every day, it can cause injury, it can actually set you back from fights. I've seen plenty of people across different athletic pursuits Unknown Speaker 4:23 perform poorly, because they trained too hard. So what's the solution? The solution is mixing it up. Because guess what, all combat sports require mixing it up. You've got that high intensity level, and then a more moderate intensity level. And you've got to train for both and you have to train for both differently. But what if I told you that your moderate intensity work could actually be sustaining to induce recovery to make your high intensity training less injurious to your body and set you up for success? There's a way to do that. And we have it. I'll be the first one to tell you the things that we've put together. They're not revolutionary, but no one's talking about them, especially within the realm of combat sports. We've taken some principles that exist that are understood that are even coached in various fitness disciplines, especially at high levels, like the Olympics, or in fitness pursuits, like CrossFit. They're talking about these things. And we've taken some of these principles that best apply to martial arts and combat sports, and brought them into a simple five week program that will help you prepare for anything, whether it's a full contact fight, whether it's the next testing at your martial arts school where you need to do a lot of sparring. It doesn't matter what it is, the biological processes are the same. And by digging in and fully understanding the science, we have constructed a program that will reduce your risk of injury and better prepare you. There is no other program on the planet like this. And it even leaves space for the other things that you'll need to do to prepare weightlifting, actual fighting of rounds, working on technique, going to classes, all of these things have space within this program. In fact, the intense portion of this workout plan is only two days a week. That's it, that is all you need. Those two days a week done the right way, along with the lower intensity workouts that are up to five days a week will set you up for success. They will reduce your risk of injury. They will enhance the adaptation required to perform your best and you can still do all the other preparing that you need to do. If you don't believe me that all combat sports are roughly the same when it comes to the Actual workout put, go watch some tape, go go to YouTube, go anywhere go look at your old fight tapes, go check out any video you want of any fights and you will see that these flurries take less than 10 seconds generally sometimes they go up to 10 or 12 at the upper upper upper output. Maybe we're talking 15 seconds. But you will see that people will go really intense for a few seconds and then they'll back down to something more moderate. This is how you have to train if this is how you're going to work out. Can you mix those two types of training in one workout? No, because biologically the body does not adapt in that way. This is where understanding the science becomes critical because if you just throw too much stuff at it, your body will adapt to the loudest signal not all signals. Your body cannot adapt to a whole bunch of different stimuli at the same time. It can only adapt to One thing at a time, and this is what we've broken down for you. So you can make sure that at the end of five weeks, you are better prepared than you have ever been. But if you have more than five weeks, you can run the program again. You could start halfway in the middle, you could start at the beginning and run through and get three and a half times through. Unknown Speaker 8:20 By setting this up with a focus on building adaptation, while also recovering, you don't have to worry about peaking for a fight. You don't have to be concerned with fatigue and inducing injury before your event. We've got this all set up, it's broken down. Is this the best way for you to prepare? Yes. Are there other ways out there? That could be better? Probably not. Why? Because the science is the science. The human body is the human body. And the more we come to understand about adaptation and metabolism, the more we learn about the biological processes in the body. If you want, you can take the information I've given you right now and you can go off and you can do the research on your own. And you can construct a program based on that research. And I will guarantee that you will come up with something very similar to what we've put together here. If your time isn't valuable, go ahead and do that. I encourage you to do so. But if your time is valuable, if you would rather spend those hours training and actually getting ready for something, then follow through and you can check out the program that we've put together to get you the very best results and give you a leg up on your competition.

See the full story with pictures at: https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/global-topics/2019/20190901_vol112.html A pressing concern for Japan is the need to reduce the amount of money the government has to spend on medical costs. One way that this can be done is to help people maintain good health after retirement. To support this goal, Otsuka has been working together with local governments, firms, and organizations across Japan to help keep people fit and healthy, with a particular focus upon specific regional problems. In July of 2019, Otsuka joined forces with the city of Mima in Tokushima Prefecture and the pro soccer team from the area, Tokushima Vortis, to run the first Vortis Conditioning Program. The aim of this is to help citizens establish new exercise habits so as to improve their motor function, and through this reduce the likelihood of their requiring treatment in the future. By doing so, care costs can be reduced, relieving some of the financial burden on society. This initiative made use of a Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry supported social impact bond (SIB) framework. SIBs are outcome-based contracts where private funds are used for initiatives that address social challenges, and governmental departments then later reimburse or subsidize the costs according to the program’s level of success. This project is particularly exciting as it is the first SIB in a healthcare field involving a pro soccer team. A total of 1,800 members of the public will participate in the program over the next five years. Participants will attend weekly group training sessions with Tokushima Vortis coaches for eight weeks, as well as exercising at home at least once a week. The program will introduce the participants to a new exercise routine, and all daily physical activities will be tracked using a wearable device. The hope is that the program will help alleviate physical problems often suffered, such as those related to the hips, joints, and overall posture. After training, participants will be given a pack of Bodymainté Jelly, a lactic acid and protein supplement to support good physical condition, and receive useful nutritional information from a registered dietitian. Participants in the first course commented that they were able to complete the exercises in about 30 minutes in their own homes, making it very easy to do. They also felt that the program had helped improve their physical condition, including their posture and problems such as stiff shoulders. Otsuka firmly believes that good health requires attention to body, mind, and relationships with other people, and we are committed to helping nurture a healthy society by taking a holistic approach at a community level. We will continue to provide a wide range of opportunities to help people improve their well-being today, and through this contribute to the long-term health and happiness of society as a whole.

The Bignalls and I bicker about the history of Mission CrossFit, changes in CrossFit as a whole, challenges in running a gym and working with your spouse, and the changes in competing in the CrossFit Games. Bio:  Ladies First! Meagan Bignall: I was born and raised in Houston, and have two amazing dogs. My main focus as a child was gymnastics, and I spent ages 5-14 competing. In college, I was re-introduced to working out and began going to the local Bally’s 3 times a week. In 2010 a fellow gymnastics coach asked me to accompany her at a CrossFit trial class. After rolling my eyes over the new fad, I told her I’d go. I’ve been hooked on CrossFit since April 2010 and haven’t looked back. I began coaching at P3 CrossFit in Houston in April 2014, but it was cut short when I made my big move to San Antonio. Luckily I was introduced to Mission in 2012, and knew exactly where my new CrossFit home would be. I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge while helping others meet their health and fitness goals. Drew Bignall: A Minnesota native, Drew grew up with a passion for all sports, having competed in almost every sport, but over time concentrated his efforts towards baseball. He was a competitive gymnast for 8 years and feels that was the best choice his parents could have made for him from an athletic background. Drew is a very ambitious and determined individual and truly believes that quitting is never an option. He played four years of varsity college baseball at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX before an injury stopped him from playing professionally after college. Since April of 2009, Drew has been an active competitor and avid participant in CrossFit Competitions. He has been CrossFitting since November 2008 and plans to continue for the rest of his life. Being a CrossFit coach means more than just coaching to him. He instills those methodologies by “Constantly Varied, Functional Movements, Performed at High-Intensities” to everyone who walks through his door and strives to see them succeed in their own ways. He is constantly driven to learn new fitness techniques and styles, as well as search for up-to-date health and wellness information that he can share with him members. Drew has also been developing a Strength and Conditioning Program based around Powerlifting, Olympic Lifting, CrossFit and overall athletic ability since November of 2010. It is utilized by many of the Mission CrossFit SA’s coaches and athletes who have goals of competing. Drew loves to coach and will teach his program to anyone who is willing to learn, wants to have a true competitive edge over their competition and has the drive to perform at their highest level possible.

This is the audio version for the blog article, You need A Strength and Conditioning Plan Every year, we ask college baseball players what advice they would give high school guys trying to make a successful transition to college baseball. Every year, we get some variation of the response above: “Get in the weight room!” Take the advice of the guys who have lived the experience and survived the difficult transition to college baseball. If you want to play college baseball, you need a strength program in high school. Building a baseline level of functional strength is incredibly important for recruiting and to be prepared for the rigorous college season. Functional strength means strength that is useful to performing baseball specific movements more efficiently. A strength and conditioning program that improves functional strength is the answer to many baseball deficiencies and allows a player to throw and hit harder, run faster, bend and move more efficiently, stay healthy and much more. So what does this mean for recruits wanting to play baseball in college? Plain and simple, make building functional strength a big part of your development plan. As we discuss in our article, Why Size and Physicality Matter in Recruitment, college coaches are looking to recruit physical players. While not everyone develops physically at the same time and not everyone can be 6’3”/205, everyone can add strength and mobility that will help them perform better, stay healthy, and get recruited. Getting in the weight room consistently is one of the single most important things you can do for your development. A quality strength and conditioning program in high school provides the base and preparation necessary to make significant gains in college when your body matures and allows you to improve as a player by leaps and bounds. So how do you go about creating a quality strength and conditioning program? We share some basic exercises you can do in this guest blog by former college baseball standout and PT Alex Wirta, but there are many people who offer great strength and conditioning advice specific to baseball for free. Here are five of our favorite free resources that are well known in the baseball community: Eric Cressey, Cressey Performance Driveline Baseball, Baseball Development Powerhouse and Industry Leader Ryan Faer , Cleveland Indians Zach Dechant, TCU Baseball S&C Coastal Carolina Baseball’s S&C Team All 5 of these resources share a wealth of strength and conditioning information and are a must follows on social media. Their blogs are linked above and they are also easy to find on Twitter. These resources are a great place to start doing your research and summer is a great time to learn about and implement a strength and conditioning plan that is right for you. Don’t wait, it’s time to get to work! Disclaimer: As always get approval from your parents, doctor, and school strength coach before you start any conditioning program. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/keep-playing-baseball/support

SSM Episode 25 This episode dives back into the topic of body composition in sport that we started a few weeks ago. Some might say it is a touchy topic but as you will learn from Jason today, there is a lot of benefit to speaking up and sharing wisdom! Coach Jason McCullagh is the Director of Athlete Performance at Conker Fitness and Founder/Co Owner of Mettle Sports Training . Coach McCullagh has been working with young athletes since he built the Strength and Conditioning Program for the Maverick Volleyball Club in Ottawa in 2005 and subsequently launched the brand Mettle Sports Training to support volleyball athletes more broadly. While his focus was Volleyball athletes for many years, he also works with Soccer, Baseball and Hockey athletes on a regular basis. His approach is very much keeping things simple where every exercise has a reason to be there, no ‘fluff’. Coach McCullagh’s focus on building long term relationships and development strategies with athletes and their parents will improve performance, reduce injury potential and educate athletes at every touch point. In this interview we get into some specific details about training and body composition for the teen athlete, we tackle the goal of training and how it relates to the athlete’s physique. We also get introduced to Jason’s philosophy on testing body composition and I have to say it is refreshing. As a former collegiate athlete who was body fat tested regularly I wish I had more of Jason’s approach. A confidence in body composition can support a confidence in an athlete on and off the field of play or the ice rink. To support our athletes this spring we are offering a 5 day coaching experience to map out their performance body. This does mean addressing the big discussion about body composition but I think you will find our approach and our philosophy to be a game changer.
