The Podcast is BACK! In episode 1 of season 4 I had the fortune of being able to sit down and chop it up with North Broward Prep's Director of Athletic Development and Head Track and Field Coach, John Garrish. Throughout the 45-minute discussion, John and I get into: 1)    Even though his path has changed through his career, how his love in training has still been a driving force behind his decisions.2)    How the idea of “Shiny Object Syndrome” impact coaches3)    The role of identifying value in toys, tools, or tech, and where the research can impact progress either way.4)    Wickets, their value, where they can be helpful, and what you could do if you don't have access to them, or a group too large to implement them.5)    Building progressions while keeping what's “best available for the group” in mind6)    Utilizing constraints to correct technical issues in sprinting, and what he's looking at to identify what need to be improved.7)    Where the weight room connects with speed training, including where its priority sits throughout the year and how that changes.8)    His entire weekly plan in “the perfect world” I'm truly grateful for John being so open to sharing all of this with us today. Understanding how some of the best practitioners provide feedback and put athlete's in situations to improve technique is so valuable, so I can't thank him enough for sharing so many aspects of, not just his progressions, but what he's identifying and correcting. His Instagram full of awesome content, including great “stories” giving great examples of his athletes in action, so give him a follow at: @coach_garrish. Lastly, if you find value in the show please feel free to share this episode with a collogue that you feel would enjoy it, and please don't forget to subscribe and give us a 5-star review on your favorite podcast player. I truly do appreciate it. Who is John Garrish? Coach John Garrish has served the North Broward Prep community for nine years as the school's Strength & Conditioning Coordinator, five as its Head Track and Field Coach and three as a Middle School Faculty member.  A native of South Florida, John attended Wagner College (B.S., Psychology '12) and the University of North Texas (M.S., Kinesiology '14) before serving as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at Rutgers University and finally joining the North Broward Prep family in 2014.   Most recently, John served temporarily on the FAU Football Strength Staff during the summer of 2020.  John is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has served on the Board of Directors for the National High School Strength Coaches' Association as the Southeast Regional Director (2016-2020) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association's High School Special Interest Group Executive Council (2015-2016).

Rich Burnett is the President and Director of Athletic Development for Triple F Elite Sports Training in Knoxville, TN. He is also the Co-Founder and CEO of Athletic Assessment Technology, known more commonly as Plyomat, and has over 10 years of experience working in high school, and NCAA DI strength and conditioning.  John Garrish is the Director of Athletic Development & Performance at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida, and the school's Head Track and Field Coach.  John was voted the 2022 National High School Strength Coach of the Year by the NHSSCA and has been a two-time guest previously on this podcast, speaking on a variety of plyometric and speed training topics. The standing vertical jump, or “countermovement” test is a very popular method of assessment for athletes and has been for some time.  What the standing vertical leap test doesn't tell you, is how fast an athlete gets off the ground, which is generally what matters in sport, more so than how high an athlete can reach.  Reactivity is also a general coordination ability where athletes can both anticipate the ground and coordinate the proper muscle activation sequences to rebound themselves back into the air, which is critical for a variety of athletic jumping, throwing, cutting, and overall movement tasks. On today's show, Rich and John will get into how they train reactive ability in plyometrics, with respect to ground contact times, and the function of power that being able to get off the ground quickly provides.  We also discuss the differences between double and single-leg reactive strength tests and measurements, and how they correlate to athleticism, as well as the differences between simple plyometric movements based on contact time, versus more complex and coordinated movements, such as skips and gallops. Timestamps and Main Points 4:39 – What “Reactive Strength” is, and how Rich and John use it in the scope of their training programs. 18:32 – Comparing Double vs. Single-leg reactive strength measurements, and how single-leg RSI is a “gold standard” of explosive athletic ability. 35:00 – How Rich and John go about coaching or referencing ground contact times in plyometric exercises. 48:56 – Links between bilateral reactive strength scores, trap bar deadlift ability, and core strength. 58:07 – Thoughts on more “compressed” and simple, intense plyometrics, relative to more long, rhythmic, and coordinated plyometric-type movements. Rich Burnett and John Garrish Quotes “RSI provided a lot of value to the sprinters, triple jumpers, and athletes that had a high level of success at the state level, go figure, had the highest RSI values” Garrish “Just because a kid is good at the bilateral (RSI), doesn't mean they are good at the single leg (RSI) and vice versa.  One of our best pogo kids on the 5 hop is not good at the single leg one” Burnett “I have for sure noticed with the single leg RSI hop (single leg forward, onto one leg on the mat, land on two feet),

Kurt talks about just walking into the coaches office and talking to him, which he says wouldn't happen today. He gives some insight about what it looks like today with kids looking to join his program or walk on. I liked his honesty and how he said he tries to be honest with the kids and let them know if it's a reality. We continue to talk about his coaching journey and how he ended up at the University of Tennessee, where he graduated and worked as a student assistant, before moving on to Mississippi State. Kurt talks about the coaches he was able to study under during those times and how it helped influence his own coaching. We finish up talking about getting the job at UAB and what this season is looking like for them, as we are getting closer to the indoor season. So, tune in and enjoy the conversation. New Mexico cross country is wrapping up with the state meet coming next week, November 5th and the first Red vs Green Championship race the next Saturday. What have you been programmed to believe? Our limiting beliefs are often the result of programming from society's expectations and our past experiences. The first step towards deprogramming ourselves is recognition. When we have awareness of our unconscious programming, we can then take the steps needed to uncover the root of our limiting beliefs. All of your dreams and desires are possible, you just have to reprogram yourself to believe they will come true! On Episode 22 I sit down with Coach Ryan Banta, Head Track and field coach, author, and podcaster. Coach Banta starts out by sharing his experiences in coaching , especially early ones and how they helped to set him up for growth down the road and ultimately becoming a better coach. Part I of my conversation really focuses on the Critical Mass system that coach Banta uses to prepare his athletes. Coach Banta provides the rationale behind the system and discusses how he divides workouts in what I would equate to a 2 week undulating microcycle. Coach Banta discusses the five different types of workouts or zones that would be present during that two week cycle and how he alternates between the two weeks to build a really balanced approach. Coach Banta takes us through a sample two week cycle and discusses how max velocity, acceleration, speed endurance, special endurance, and tempo workouts would be implemented. The Weight room, plyometrics, and prehab activities are all taken into account and how they fit within the context of the given stimulus desired. One thing that I was struck with as coach Banta and I recorded is how important variance is to him and how he really believes that proper variance of stimulus is a major driver of adaptations. A cornerstone of his system is that intensities of the activities remain close to the event that the person will be participating in always being slightly below or above the race distance they will face in competition. As Coach Banta discusses the different points it makes sense the variance of stimulus on distances, exertion, and other variables help to build the proper gears, speed, and staying power for a given race. One of the things that really stood out to me as Coach Banta closed out how he preps the sprint athletes are that he said he wants a global athlete, that is well rounded, and he justifies that by sharing that they are less likely to become injured and also to be more prepared for the rigors of multiple events in track and field. We end part I of our conversation by talking about the 800 and how it truly is a unique event 50/50 anaerobic to aerobic. Make sure to come back next week for part II of our conversation based around Tempos, how he varies them and utilizes them to build resiliency in athletes, The importance of the weight room for track and field athletes, and some other great topics. This month on Inside the Orchard, we have a special guest host dropping in. It's summertime, and the Asian beetles are in full force, so we have been battling them, but we think we have them under wraps. We are going to have a few apples to enjoy this fall which is a nice surprise. Our guest, this month on the Podcast is Matthew Reneker. He is the Head Track and Cross Country for Mississippi College. We got to know Coach Reneker because our middle daughter runs for him at MC. Grab a friend, listen to the Podcast, and work through the exercises below. Intentionality Self-Assessment: Use the following scale (1=I'm crushing it to 5=I am not thinking about it) to assess how intentional you are in your preparation for the next stage of life. If you are a parent, ask, “how intentional am I being in preparing my student for the next stage of life?” 1. I regularly spend time thinking about what life could look like 5 years from now. 2. I make time weekly to reflect on my progress and adjust. 3. I have developed a plan to move from my current reality to where I want to be. 4. I have a community of people who I can meet with that hold me accountable. 5. I understand the fears (internal) and obstacles (external) that could hinder my progress. Read Philippians 3:12-14 What phrase or word jumps out at you? What about it caught your attention? Describe how these verses challenge how you think about transitioning to the next stage. Practice: Coach Reneker talked about creating environments where students could practice handling different scenarios. Sometimes practice would be very controlled, and at other times practice could feel a little chaotic. He created these different scenarios to help his students learn to adapt, problem-solve, and find solutions. Pick a category and create some ways to practice those same skills to help you prepare for the next stage. Choose one area to focus on over the next two weeks: Faith/Family/Focus (thinking)/Feelings (emotions)/Friends/Field (work)/Finances/Fitness/Fun

Jud Logan (4x Olympian & Head Track & Field Coach at Ashland University) Over the last 4 decades, Jud has been a force in the track and field community. First, he was dominant athlete who broke the American Record in both the hammer throw and the weight throw multiple times and represented the United States in 4 Olympic Games. In the mid 1990's, he transitioned into coaching, where he has now become one of the most respected and decorated coaches in the country. He has coached multiple Olympians (including my wife Jackie), dozens of All-American's & national champions.  In many ways, for me, Jud is where it all started. I was lucky enough to compete for him as at athlete at Ashland University in his early days as a coach and he coached me through college and to my first Olympic Trials. It was at Ashland where I became passionate about human performance (periodization, precise load management, exercise prescription, personalized programming, tempo, biomechanics, lifting technique, etc.). This passion initially drove me into the coaching profession and eventually into the medical profession. Jud has been a huge influence to me on multiple levels, which is why I started this podcast with him.  While Jud was a stand-out talent as an athlete, a quality he possesses that was integral in his success is his incredible ability to focus, maintain a positivity and goal set. I trained with him through 2 full Olympic cycles where I watched him set goals that would not be achieved for 4 years. During the pursuit of these goals I got to see him sustain a positive mind-set through the good times and the bad. I was able to see him express the ability to sustain light focus on a goal for years without wavering and I was able to watch him hyper-focus on a task such as execution of a lift or a throw. For me, his intensity in the weight room is as legendary as his physical talents or his accomplishments.  Perhaps because he was so physically gifted, his incredible mental/psychological ability went unnoticed. Because of the importance of mind-set/goal-setting/metal focus/positivity in performance, and because of Jud's incredible prowess in these attributes of an athlete, the focus of this podcast is here. For this episode, I brought on a surprise guest, my wife Jackie.  Jackie was a 13 time All-American, 5 time National Champion and 2004 Olympian for Jud. I don't think I am putting words in Jud's mouth to say that Jackie is one of his favorite, best, and most important athletes of his career. Like Jud, she was/is a medal giant, which is one of the major reasons she was so successful. I am glad she was able to contribute. In this discussion we cover the following: The importance of mind-set The importance of positivity Long term goal-setting (1 year, 4 years and beyond) Achieving intense focus for short events like executing a lift or a throw Coaching mind-set in athletes And much, much more   For more information on Jud, visit: https://goashlandeagles.com/sports/track-and-field/roster/coaches/jud-logan/100 Jud Logan on Instagram at  @Olympic4x _____ For more information about Dr. Richard Ulm, visit: On the web: http://www.Athlete-Enhancement.com (www.Athlete-Enhancement.com) On YouTube: @AthleteEnhancement On Instagram: @AthleteEnhacement
