What defines true toughness in coaching? Dan Perlmutter presents an alternative to the “tough strength coach” stereotype, reframing success as adaptability, resilience, and relentless positivity. As Director of Sports Performance and Head Olympic Sports Performance Coach at Duke University, Perlmutter reflects on building a strong culture rooted in genuine relationships and longevity. He explains Duke’s structured approach to developing interns and coaching assistants, highlighting purposeful recruiting and intentional mentorship to transform passion into professionalism. Perlmutter emphasizes a gratitude lens and people-focused philosophy, always prioritizing the athlete in front of him. He also addresses how strength and conditioning coaches can navigate collegiate shifts, such as Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal, by reinforcing the weight room environment and culture. If you are seeking practical strategies to build a sustainable career and a workplace you look forward to each day, this conversation is your blueprint. And they see us doing that and functioning that way. And it helps our teams function that way. So maybe it contributes to the team cultures for each sports program here, too.” 7:20 “It takes pretty tough, resilient people to do this work. And everybody finds that toughness and that resiliency in different ways. And I think maybe over the years, there's been a stereotype of what the tough strength coach looks like. That's not what I'm talking about at all. I'm talking about somebody who is willing to stick it out in tough situations, willing to work really long hours, willing to pivot a million times a day, and adapt a million times a day, and be out in the cold, and then be inside, and then be out in the rain. And all the different challenges that are thrown at us as professionals in this field-- I look at every single one of those as positives. I'm annoyingly positive and optimistic. I'm sure some of the folks around here get sick of me talking this way, but I think there's opportunity in every one of those situations.” 14:45 “One of the big pieces of advice that I would give to young folks who are on the job search right now or figuring out what lane they want to go down is to not forget that this is a people-focused profession. And it's not just you leading or serving athletes. You've got to find a place that you really connect the people that you're-- connect with the people that you're going to work with every day.” 15:58

In this episode of the Braun Performance & Rehab Podcast, Dan is joined by Molly Binetti to discuss her success as a Sports Performance Coach, how she has blazed a trail forward, the principles she has used for developing champions and how you can do the same. Sports performance coach Molly Binetti brought her athlete-centered coaching philosophy to South Carolina in June 2018, and the Gamecocks immediately responded to her focus on a holistic development of mind, body and spirit. “Molly's passion for women's basketball was clear right off the bat, and that's the kind of energy we like in our program,” South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley said. “Her experience with basketball and other sports gives her great perspective, and her research background shows her commitment to her craft.” In her three seasons on the staff, Binetti's ability to connect with student-athletes and develop creative and competitive workouts has kept the Gamecocks engaged and on the court throughout the season. South Carolina enjoyed tremendous success in her tenure, especially in the postseason, collecting two SEC Tournament championships and advancing to the 2021 NCAA Final Four following a 2019 NCAA Sweet 16 run. Binetti joined the Gamecock staff after four seasons at Louisville working with volleyball, softball and women's tennis. She spent the first three of those seasons as the secondary sports performance coach for women's basketball as well. At Louisville, she focused on power development and applied sport technologies, a trend she continues at South Carolina. Prior to her tenure at Louisville, Binetti served as the sports performance coach for Purdue's women's tennis, men's and women's diving and cheerleading teams (2013-14). The Eau Claire, Wis., native has her Strength and Conditioning Coach certification from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and is listed as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She has contributed to two articles published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, both focused on the performance of elite women's basketball athletes. After earning her bachelor's degree in exercise physiology from Marquette in 2012, Binetti completed her master's in kinesiology and exercise science at Minnesota in 2013. Cory Walts was hired as the Director of Strength & Conditioning at the University of Pennsylvania in April 2019. Walts came to Penn from nearby Haverford College, where he spent 12 years as the head strength and conditioning coach and fitness center director. During that time, he designed and implemented year-round sports performance programs for a majority of Haverford's 23 varsity sports and several club sports teams. He utilized a holistic approach to create robust individuals and teams, focusing on physiological qualities (movement skill, strength, power, speed, agility, and energy systems); psychological qualities (growth mindset, grit, and internal motivation through the use of education, autonomy and accountability); and lifestyle qualities (positive habit formation in sleep, nutrition, hydration, and mindfulness). During Walts' tenure, a number of Haverford teams reached unprecedented heights. The volleyball program won three consecutive Centennial Conference titles under Walts' guidance and reached the NCAA Regional semifinals in 2014, while men's soccer advanced to the 2015 NCAA Elite Eight. From the spring season, baseball won three conference titles, advanced to the NCAA Regionals and had two student-athletes drafted in the eighth round of the MLB Draft, while softball advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in 2016. Haverford also had 12 student-athletes selected as National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and EAS Sports All-Americans during his last five years on campus. In addition to his work with Haverford student-athletes, Walts served as director of the Joe Schwartz '83 Memorial 3K Run/Walk, which raised more than $75,000 for ALS research and had more than 2,000 participants from the campus community. He taught multiple classes within Haverford's Physical Education program and co-created the Healthy Mind/Healthy Body and Employee Wellness Committees, multi-department initiatives aimed at enhancing student and employee wellness respectively. Walts is co-Head of the Philadelphia Area Strength & Conditioning Association, which fosters relationships and develops knowledge specific to the profession of Strength & Conditioning for those in and around the Philadelphia area. He also is a member of West Chester University's Exercise Science Advisory Board and oversees the Strength and Conditioning program for the Marian Anderson Recreation Center in South Philadelphia. In 2013, Walts was a finalist for the NSCA College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year Award. Walts graduated magna cum laude from Ithaca College in 2005 with a major in clinical exercise science and played four years for the football program. Following internships with the strength and conditioning departments at Cornell University and the Buffalo Bills, he earned his master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Maryland in 2007. Walts also worked with the Terps' strength and conditioning department during his two years in College Park, serving as the strength and conditioning coach for men's tennis and assisted with football, men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming. Walts is a Certified (with Distinction) Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and a Certified Level 1 Sports Performance Coach with USA Weightlifting.
