In this episode, Wesley College's high-performance manager, Dr. Daniel Hiscock, shares insights from his seven years at the institution, detailing how the school's long-term athletic development (LTAD) program supports students from pre-kindergarten through year 12 in building athletic ability, healthy habits, and life skills. Daniel highlights the program's three-tiered structure, which caters to all students, from general participants to elite athletes competing at state and national levels. He shares inspiring stories of student athletes with lofty goals, such as a badminton player aiming for the Commonwealth Games and a footballer pursuing an AFL career. These examples demonstrate the importance of consistency, tailored support, and collaboration with families to help students achieve their aspirations. The podcast also emphasises the inclusivity of the Wesley College LTAD program, which extends support to less advantaged students and those with disabilities. Programs like UniGym and early gross motor skill interventions are designed to foster lifelong habits of physical activity, ensuring that all students benefit, regardless of their athletic ability. Daniel further explains how the school integrates innovative training methods, such as isometric exercises, to enhance strength, accommodate injured athletes, and manage high training demands while minimising injury risks. A significant focus of the episode is the collaborative mentorship approach taken at Wesley College. Dr. Hiscock underscores the importance of open communication with parents, external coaches, and club programs to effectively navigate the complex needs of high-performing athletes. He also reflects on the challenges of balancing resources and scaling programs, sharing practical strategies to optimise outcomes for a wide range of students. Drawing from his diverse career, Daniel shares lessons learned, emphasising the value of foundational training principles, the need for athlete buy-in, and the importance of individualised programming. He explains how these principles have guided the program's growth and success while remaining adaptable to the unique needs of each student. The episode concludes with Daniel reflecting on the holistic value of sport as a means to build not only high-performing athletes but also well-rounded and resilient individuals.
In part 2 of the Research 2 Reps Roundtable, my co-hosts Dr. Ernie Rimer, Dr. Ted Lambrinides, and I continue our engaging discussion with Dr. Tim Suchomel, diving deeper into the essentials of long-term athlete development (LTAD). Dr. Suchomel emphasizes the importance of starting athletes with fundamental movement patterns, such as squats and hip hinges, to establish a strong foundation before progressing to advanced techniques like Olympic lifts. He highlights how focusing on movement quality at an early age helps prevent poor habits in college athletes and sets them up for success. We also explore practical ways to monitor and track athlete progress in settings with limited resources, underscoring that effective monitoring doesn't require expensive tools but rather consistent observation and creativity. The conversation touches on key topics in youth sports, including the benefits of multi-sport participation versus early specialization. Dr. Rimer shares his perspective as a youth baseball coach, advocating for a balanced approach that builds a well-rounded athletic profile and prevents burnout and overuse injuries. We examine how motivation and fun should remain central to youth sports, while also fostering skill development and parental engagement. From debates over training priorities—such as hip speed versus bar speed—to the evolving landscape of strength and conditioning, this episode stresses the need for adaptable, research-backed methods. We conclude by encouraging coaches to prioritize needs analysis, embrace foundational knowledge, and stay open to new techniques that ensure holistic athlete development. He acted as the central performance consultant for the Own The Podium initiative leading up to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. He has worked with Hockey Canada for the past 20 years, most notably with the National Women's Team program for 15 of those years. He has also worked extensively with the PGA on their youth development initiatives. In addition, Norris is a member of the Sport Physiology Group/Altitude Research Group, headed by David Smith, within the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Calgary. He is a recognized authority on long-term athlete development and talent nurturing systems. Most recently, Norris was appointed adjunct professor (applied physiology) at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alta., after being an adjunct assistant professor (applied physiology) at the University of Calgary for the past decade. He has been on the Board of Directors for Swimming Canada, Cross Country Canada/Ski du Fond Canada and Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton, and is also a strong advocate for sport and recreation both locally and nationally. On today's episode we discuss when it comes to setting up classrooms for children, we get it. Everything in the school, including the restrooms, are kid-sized, because we understand they are not adult-sized. Why do we continue to insist on full-size fields, big equipment, and adult rules when it comes to youth sports? Why do we insist on comparing our kids to others when we know everyone grows and develops differently? And so much more. In this episode, I talk with professional powerlifters Kristen Dunsmore and Garrett Blevins about intensity and how it affects periodization and programming decisions and the resultant physiology in powerlifting. We take interesting tangents into sex differences in training, long-term athlete development (LTAD) in strength vs endurance sports, and problems with training studies in the scientific literature. Charles Young - Director of Basketball Performance at Fresno State University - joins us for the 10th episode of MTN. On this episode of the podcast, Charles explains his yearly overview of training at Fresno St, how he incorporates the Quadrant System to help organize training throughout the year, the role that technology has helped him understand what is really important within training and the mistakes he has made in the past, and the LTAD approach that is crucial yet tough to grasp within college basketball (or any college sport now). Charles's journey within performance is fascinating - starting with a brutal injury that set him down a path to help others - and we think that anyone (whether in basketball or not) can take something away from his experience. In this episode I chat with Andy Hailey, Director of Swimming at Brighton College, about his unique coaching philosophy and innovative training techniques. In this episode, we dive into the world of ecological dynamics, constraint-led approaches, and the benefits of implicit learning in swimming. Andy shares how his journey, from a PE teacher to an aquatics professional, has been shaped by key mentors like Rick Shuttelworth, and Andy Kirk, who have helped him challenge traditional beliefs and techniques in swim coaching.Andy's journey has been shaped by key moments in his career, such as when Andrew Kirk challenged him to explain how he individualises his coaching. Andy has learnt to challenge his own beliefs, and how energy systems and skillful swimming techniques can be used to help younger athletes reach their full potential. We discuss the challenge of energy-based sports and how Andy, has been an outlier in the aquatics world. We talk about the importance of intention in coaching, and how constraints can help with skillful swimming. We also look at how the LTAD model can contribute to burnout, and how governing bodies are increasingly looking to an aquatics-focused rather than swimming-focused approach. We explore the concept of a reductionist approach to getting a strong kick. Changing the focus can help keep motivation up, as well as the idea of using heart rate and time to help swimmers find their cruiseing speed and learn to listen to their heart. We also discuss a golf set, and how the constraints of stroke rate and time can help athletes maximize propulsion from each stroke. We discuss the concept of co-design in swimming and how it can be used to give swimmers more freedom and control over their training. We explore the challenge of introducing swimmers to a new culture and setting, and how this can require more individualization. We consider the benefits of structure and order for some swimmers, and how this can be balanced with the need for expression in team sports.

Wayne Goldsmith's journey began with packing boxes and evolved into a successful career in coaching and talent development. A chance encounter and someone's belief in Wayne's potential led him to pursue a career in sports science.Wayne has worked with organizations like Swimming Australia, Triathlon Australia, and the Wallabies. He conducted research on the post-host phenomenon surrounding the Olympics and the factors that influenced some countries to thrive while others struggled after hosting the games.Wayne emphasizes the importance of looking beyond our own sports for inspiration, such as the All Blacks coaching team seeking guidance from the New York Ballet. The role of parents in helping their children become the best they can be is crucial, and Wayne discusses the importance of creating a safe environment for kids to fall in love with their sport.Dyslexia and ADHD can present unique strengths and weaknesses, and Wayne shares his own experiences with these conditions.Misinterpretation and implementation of long-term athlete development (LTAD) may not always serve the best interests of children, and Wayne explores the challenges and misconceptions surrounding LTAD.The declining participation in organized competitive sports highlights the need for creating positive, safe, and engaging experiences for kids and their families.Wayne's insights and perspectives on youth sports, parenting, and LTAD provide valuable lessons for coaches, parents, and athletes alike.
Joe Baker makes a welcome return to the podcast to talk about his latest book 'The Tyranny of Talent'. We had a great conversation and covered a LOT of ground including...1. Talent in sports is a far more complex concept than most people assume, and the traditional understanding of talent as a fixed, simple, and unidimensional capacity is flawed.2. Coaches often lack training in talent evaluation and prediction, making it difficult for them to accurately identify and develop potential in young athletes.3. Long-term athlete development (LTAD) models can be useful but have limitations, and should be considered as a starting point rather than an end goal.4. A more nuanced approach to athlete development is needed, taking into account various domains such as child development, behavioral, neurological, and physical needs.5. Predicting talent in professional sports drafts is challenging, and early selections can have a significant impact on an athlete's long-term development.6. Survivorship bias can lead to an overemphasis on the success stories of athletes who made it through a particular development system, while neglecting the many others who did not.7. Diversity and variability in youth sports are crucial for creating inclusive, accessible opportunities for all young people, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.8. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child can provide a framework for ethical decision-making in sports coaching, policy-making, and athlete development, ensuring that children's needs and interests are prioritised.9. Addressing athlete maltreatment and promoting transparency and accountability in sports environments can help create a safer, more empowering space for young athletes.10. Challenging traditional ideas and approaches in coaching and athlete development can lead to more effective, inclusive systems that better support the long-term success and well-being of all young athletes.

In this episode, Deven, Jeremy and guest Connor discuss LTAD or Long Term Athlete Development and why bat speed and training bat speed is important.
LTAD has almost become a cliché. Everyone has an LTAD program and they all look the same. How can that be? Because the models assume a linear march to the top of the athletic achievement pyramid. In reality it is a very chaotic process at best, full of detours, false starts and redirection. On this week's episode we look at rethinking long-term athlete development with some practical examples from yesteryear and the present. Tyler focuses on athletic development and performance, but is definitely focused on developing the throwing capabilities of the athletes that he works with. Tyler was able to increase his own Velo as he references early in the podcast to help give him a chance to extend his playing prospects after college. Perspectives on LTAD flowed throughout many different portions of our discussion, and early on Tyler shares something that I whole heartedly agree with. If we can have athletes run fast, jump high, and throw in their early development, than we are on pace for a well rounded athlete. Tyler also shares that he likes to see the athletes compete and he discussed gamifying some portions of training as a natural facilitator to help drive up the competitive nature of training sessions. Tyler shares how he balances neurological and physiological considerations within training and how these piece amplify the affects of one another. Orchestrating the intensification process is extremely important so we discuss how to use extensive to intensive means to build the physiological resilience into structures for later intensive means. Tyler shares some of the pitfalls that athletes can fall into in regards to recovery. The high/low model was discussed within many of the perspectives presented on this episode. Tyler shares that many athletes struggle to have a true low day and often fall into the trap of making a low day more of a moderate day with moderate intensity and volume. The balancing act of stress accumulation is discussed throughout much of the conversation and we see that the off season is a time where High velocity can be developed at a premium. This is the time to chase those high outputs, it's not that we don't touch those qualities in season but the sport is where those qualities will be accessed most frequently at that time. Coaches can be more generous with drop offs in the offseason with the understanding that they still have to be careful with max output days. Off season is quality development time and individuals can carry a bit more fatigue or stress from sessions. Drop offs for in season are extremely low 1-2% as we don't expect increases in max v at that time and we don't want to carry fatigue into later sessions. The training stimulus can encourage power and speed development or can inhibit. Tyler shares the research and idea behind fiber shifts. one of the reasons that coaches may choose to closely monitor fatigue and drop offs is to ensure that we are working in a manner that will not shift tissue quality towards a slower/ less explosive format. Understanding the preferences of athletes can go a long way in building a program that will productively build the strengths of athletes. Force velocity and load velocity assessments can help to inform coaches on whether athletes are force dominant or elastic in nature, By examining these qualities coaches can more naturally build potentiation into their training processes for athletes. On episode 51 I sat down with Brandon Holder of FASST sports performance training. Brandon works with a wide variety of clientele, however, as you can see early on in the conversation he has a passion for working with youth clients and developing them through a sensible long term approach. Brandon shares his starting point for young clients and how isometrics provide a great starting point to provide postural references and sensible methods to advance TUT. Brandon shares that with " the population that he currently works with Load is the last progression." Brandon shares how he likes to isolate to integrate, we discuss how he utilizes different exercises such as wall lateral load and lift. By doing exercises such as this, Brandon gives young athletes a great reference point that is stable and allows for athletes to build proficient modes of movement before entering more dynamic and chaotic agilities or competitions. Most of the conversation centers around sleds and how they are an extremely useful and versatile tool. All training exist on a spectrum, sleds are no different. The sled spectrum places sled training on a spectrum with strength on one end and power on the other. Load and position influence Ground contacts and ground contacts are the most telling for if an exercise is more strength or power based. Sleds can be utilized for PAP effects as well as a method to contrast training. Sleds allow for users to produce force in vectors that traditional barbell based movements do not. Sleds allow for us to move in a horizontal vector, where as force production in traditional barbell based movements are more vertically based. Sleds can be utilized to build energy systems and used for lower intensity methods as well, they provide a good format for variance and a break from more traditional barbell based movements in training. Brandon shares how to utilize periodization for sled based movements and shares some of the rationales about why sled training is a timely, safe, and powerful method for in season strength development. We end the conversation by talking about speed development and Brandon shares some of the concepts that he utilizes to gamify and involve clients in everyday processes. Brandon shares how varied starts are good to provide a robust base of movement for younger clientele. Different variations may be more applicable to team based settings and allow for athletes to interact with a variety of angles for more effective displays of speed and power. Brandon shares how showing different athletes that he understands the need of their sport helps to garner buy in to the process. Overall this is a great conversation on the rationale for including sled work, whether you chose to integrate sled training for all the methods mentioned today or you only utilize some of the options, sleds are a valuable tool that athletes can easily benefit from. Hello friends, welcome to the show. My name is Tom Broback and I am on a mission to help high school coaches keep their athletes happy and healthy. I loved playing sports growing up. From backyard football to traveling basketball to high school track and field, there was nothing better than being on a team and playing to win a game. Unfortunately, I struggled with health issues and I know your athletes do too. This inspired me to become a physical therapist and sports performance coach. This podcast will help coaches like you learn how to keep your athletes off the bench and in the game. Do you struggle with keeping your athletes motivated and moving in the cold winter months? Do you know how to progress things like crawling, skipping, hopping and small sided games? How much fun do you program with your athletes? Today, we talk about these questions and more with Jeremy Frisch. Jerem runs his gym in Clinton, MA. He is a leader in the LTAD community and an excellent follow on Twitter. I hope you learn how to make the gym the best place for your athletes in this episode. Guest - Jeremy Frisch Host - Tom Broback
